Book Description
The twelfth-century manuscript of Gregory the Great's Moralia in Job, lavishly written and illuminated at the Cistercian monastery of Cîteaux in 1111, contains images of seemingly gratuitous violence and daily life that are famous but have a significance that has eluded most modern viewers. These images range anywhere from monstrous beasts that devour and hack at each other with swords to monks harvesting grain and felling trees. They have been called by some scholars the products of "unbridled, often irrational fantasy," entirely independent of the text and of any specific meaning. In this book, Conrad Rudolph argues that beyond the face value of these illuminations, there lies an undercurrent of thematic consistency. Like obscure events from Scripture, he maintains, the images may lead to another level of meaning yet to be discovered.
Rudolph focuses on the ways spirituality and politics operate in the artistic process that produced this particular manuscript. By exploring these interactions, we can understand how the form of spirituality embodied in this manuscript legitimized a very intimate attitude on the part of the artist toward the subject. The images are in fact the product of Gregory's demand that one "become" what one reads: some reflect the ideal monk crafting a holy place out of the wilderness, others the Cistercian notion of spiritual advancement as a violent struggle. In this way, the Cîteaux Moralia in Job conveys an exuberance and creativity rarely found in manuscript illumination before or since.
Book Description
Bestiaries are a particularly characteristic product of medieval England, and give a unique insight into the medieval mind. Richly illuminated and lavishly produced, they were luxury objects for noble families. Their three-fold purpose was to provide a natural history of birds, beasts and fishes, to draw moral examples from animal behaviour (the industrious bee, the stubborn ass), and to reveal a mystical meaning - the phoenix, for instance, as a symbol of Christ's resurrection. This Bestiary, MS Bodley 764, was produced around the middle of the thirteenth century and is of singular beauty and interest. The lively illustrations have the freedom and naturalistic quality of the later Gothic style, and make dazzling use of colour. This book reproduces the 136 illuminations to the same size and in the same place as the original manuscript, fitting the text around them. Richard Barber's translation from the original Latin is a delight to read, capturing both the serious intent of the manuscript and its charm. RICHARD BARBER has written many books on the history of and life in the middle ages, from his Somerset Maugham Award-winning The Knight and Chivalry, by way of biographies of Henry II and the Black Prince, to an anthology of Arthurian literature from England, France and Germany, Arthurian Legends, and an account of the historical Arthur, King Arthur: Hero and Legend.
Customer Reviews:
An affordable treat for bibliophiles.......2002-05-07
There is something quintessentially appealing about the rare reproduction which manages to preserve so much of the spirit of the original text. The translation, which is quite clear, is embedded with the original illuminations found in the manuscript, in their original size and location relative to the page. The result is surprisingly refreshing; the decision to eschew modern layout conventions was a wise one. This is not a scholarly edition per se, and some may quibble with occasional word choice. But this medievalist, for one, has no problem with such decisions to leave out mention of the Physiologus; true translation is as much art as science, and anyone doing serious research on this book would (should) be using the original Latin anyway. This is a highly successful translation, and frankly a beautiful book, the sort that should occupy a well-worn spot on shelves of scholars and enthusiasts alike.
Good little book........2001-04-11
I don't know if the other reviewer is a child or simply has the intellect of one, but there is no such thing as a manticore. I hope you didn't say that in your report...
Anyway, 'Bestiary' is a decent resource for scholars interested in late medieval English bestiaries, and an excellent work for the interested general public. Amazingly sharp and clear facsimiles of the original illuminations are placed in their original places in relation to the text, and the translation is generally limpid.
Unfortunately, it is not always accurate. The more I studied the Bodlein Bestiary, the more I wished I had the original Latin text--there were many places where I wondered exactly how much liberty the translator took with his source. For example, he replaces ('translates) the standard introductory phrase 'Physiologus says' with 'the naturalists say that'--incredibly irresponsible scholarship. It may make the work more palatable for popular tastes, but such changes are anathema to the medievalist. I often also wonder how many changes he made to the text in the interest of keeping all the illustrations in their original places, as this also requires the translated text to fill a proportional area of the page.
All in all, I recommend it highly as a taste of the genre--a fascinating and rich one for those interested in the history of illumination, natural history, philosophy, and moral instruction. The miniatures and illuminations are beautiful and nicely reproduced, and while the text is lacking, it is the best we have at the moment.
this book rocks.......2000-04-22
This book is so informational on bestiary and its fun to read too. It will definitely help you if your doing a report on it. The illistrations are amazing! I never thought that there was such thing as a Manticore. I recommend all of those beast lovers to go out and buy this book. It will help you alot on reports. Or if you just dont have a book to read and you happen to pick up this one. Its wonderful.

Daily Life Depicted in the CSM.......2000-03-02
This volume is worth the price for any Cantigas de Santa Maria enthusiast simply for the color plates (although many of these are repeats of those presented in the 1984 book by Keller and Kincade, Iconography in Medieval Spanish Literature). The index, a logically categorized list of specific aspects of daily life in the miniatures, is very thorough indeed and should be extremely useful for further research in Cantigas iconography. The short discussions about each general category do not delve very deeply, and are again only useful as a springboard for further research. Though the written content is not what I would have exopected, for those of us who do not have regular access to the facsimiles, this book is a major blessing.
Book Description

Book Description
Duc de Berry's magical calendar pictures in the "Tres Riches Heures" give a colorful, richly detailed account of the life of peasants and nobles through the changing seasons - the cold, snowy days of winter and the warmth of the open fire, spring with its fresh colors and flowers everywhere, summer with harvesters labouring in the heat, and autumn when the grapes are picked and the seeds sown.

Book Description
This vivid portrait of everyday life in the medieval Arab world draws on thirteenth-century miniatures from collections as far afield as St Petersburg and Istanbul.
The wide range of topics covers every aspect of contemporary society in the Abbasid period, from life at court to the pomp and ceremony of the military, from the dispensing of justice to the bustle of the suq and slave market. The routine of village life is contrasted with the pleasures of urban society, and we are also introduced to the world of musicians and professional mourners. Women are shown not only as virtuous wives, and in childbirth, but as spirited and articulate individuals. The traditions of Arab hospitality are described, with scenes of drinking, feasting and etiquette.
The author has illustrated her study with contemporary miniatures, principally those of al-Wasiti which accompany the celebrated Maqamat of al-Hariri. In his text, al-Hariri made no attempt to conceal his admiration for his unprincipled and thoroughly disreputable protagonist, Abu Zayd-who represents the voice of the common man and possibly provides a prototype for the popular picaresque heroes of later European literature. Al-Hariri frequently used the tales as a subtle and indirect way of satirizing the prevailing social order, yet he was insistent that his work had an underlying moral purpose.

Book Description
This masterpiece of Armenian illumination was created in the fourteenth century by monks at the theological school of Gladzor, who copied its text and painted its elaborate cycle of miniatures. Owned at various times by merchants and princes, the Gladzor Gospels is now in the special
collections library at the University of California at Los Angeles. This beautiful, informative volume features color reproductions of most of the manuscript's intricate miniatures. The author discusses the production of manuscripts in the Middle Ages, then focuses on the Gladzor Gospels, examining
the historical and social contexts at the time of its creation, the theological school of Gladzor, and the themes depicted in the manuscript's brilliant illuminations. This book is published to coincide with and exhibitions that celebrates the 1700th anniversary of the founding of the Armenian
Church, during which the manuscript will be displayed at the Getty Museum from August 28 through December 3, 2001.
Customer Reviews:
An introduction to Medieval flowers - Visually beautiful manuscripts.......2007-04-12
This is a small book that is filled with lovely illustrations of flowers found in illuminated manuscripts in the British Museum. The flowers that decorated the borders of some 15th century books can be some of the most striking and lovely features of a well painted illuminated manuscript. This book, aside from giving illustrative examples, identifies individual flowers and some of their meanings and notes that some flowers have a "popularity" period in manuscript illustration.
However, for me, despite the undeniable beauty of the pages illustrated in this book it was somewhat of a disappointment. It provides a list at the end of the types of flowers found in these books and their botanical names - but what it does NOT provide is an equivalent list of the same flowers and their meanings. Most flowers found in illuminated manuscripts and paintings of these dates often had secondary allegorical or protective meanings aside from providing beauty to the work and it's a real shame that this portion of flower-lore was only covered in the most superficial manner.
Accessible and Useful.......2006-07-19
Flowers are ubiquitous in medieval manuscripts, and this book provides a lucid introduction to their symbolism and significance. Like the other books in this series from the British Library (Music in Medieval mss., Monsters in Medieval mss., etc.), it is both accessible to a general audience and useful for scholars. Fisher makes a particularly interesting point about the ways in which floral borders differ on text pages and leaves with miniatures.
