Book Description

Winner of the Dartmouth Medal for Outstanding Reference Publication of 1994, the first edition of Black Women in America broke ground-pulling together for the first time all of the research in this vast but underrepresented field to provide one of the strongest building blocks of Black Women's Studies. Hailed by Eric Foner of Columbia University (for a Lingua Franca survey) as "one of those publishing events which changes the way we look at a field," it simultaneously filled a void in the literature and sparked new research and concepts regarding African-American women in history. Since the first edition was published, a new generation of American black women has flourished, demanding this landmark reference be brought up to date. Women such as Venus and Serena Williams, Condoleezza Rice, Carol Mosley-Braun, Ruth Simmons, and Ann Fudge have become household names for their remarkable contributions to sports, politics, academia, and business. In three magnificent volumes, Black Women in America, second edition celebrates the remarkable achievements of black women throughout history, highlights their ongoing contributions in America today, and covers the new research the first edition helped to generate. Features: * Includes more than 150 new entries, plus revisions and updates to all previous entries * Contains 500 illustrations, many published here for the first times * Includes over 335 biographies, many newly prepared for this publication * Offers sidebars on interesting aspects of the history and culture of black women * Provides a bibliography for each entry, plus a major bibliographical essay * Features a chronology and a comprehensive index For a complete listing of contents, visit www.oup.com/us/bwia

    Book Description

-- 2007 Best in Reference, New York Public Library --

Latinas in the United States: A Historical Encyclopedia records the contribution of women of Latin American birth or heritage to the economic and cultural development of the United States. The encyclopedia, edited by Vicki L. Ruiz and Virginia Sanchez Korrol, is the first comprehensive gathering of scholarship on Latinas. This encyclopedia will serve as an essential reference for decades to come.

In more than 580 entries, the historical and cultural narratives of Latinas come to life. From mestizo settlement, pioneer life, and diasporic communities, the encyclopedia details the contributions of women as settlers, comadres, and landowners, as organizers and nuns. More than 200 scholars explore the experiences of Latinas during and after EuroAmerican colonization and conquest; the early-19th-century migration of Puerto Ricans and Cubans; 20th-century issues of migration, cultural tradition, labor, gender roles, community organization, and politics; and much more. Individual biographical entries profile women who have left their mark on the historical and cultural landscape.

With more than 300 photographs, this three-volume encyclopedia offers a mosaic of historical experiences, detailing how Latinas have shaped their own lives, cultures, and communities through mutual assistance and collective action, while confronting the pressures of colonialism, racism, discrimination, sexism, and poverty.

5 out of 5 stars Experiences of girls throughout American history.......2001-10-11

Girlhood In America: An Encyclopedia is a massive, 800 page, two volume reference work presented hundreds of signed articles by more than eighty high-profile interdisciplinary scholars covering girlhood from a range of academic perspectives including history, cultural studies, education, media studies, literature, sociology, psychology, and anthropology. Ably edited by Miriam Forman-Brunell (associate professor of history and former director of the Women's and Gender Studies Program at the University of Missouri, Kansas City) this impressive compendium showcases how portrayals of girls in children's literature, magazines, movies, toys, music, and other media have deeply influenced girls' perceptions of themselves. Also presented is a wealth of clinical information on, and insights into, such issues for girls as body image, eating disorders, emerging sexuality, and depression. Excerpts from diaries, memoirs, and autobiographical novels help to illustrate the subjective experiences of girls throughout American history from the first settlements along the Atlantic coastline down to the present day. Strongly recommended for academic and community library reference collections, Girlhood In America is enhanced with numerous black-and-white illustrations, end-of-entry bibliographies, and a comprehensive index. Girlhood In America is also available in an ebook format...

5 out of 5 stars An amazing project.......1999-12-13

This was an amazing bat mitzvah gift for my daughter (thanks Eve!) that was just in time to help her with her school report on Henrietta Szold. It is causing problems for me, however; this is the second night I've stayed up late reading it, even though I need my sleep. On the other hand, I now know a lot more about Gilda Radner, Judy Blume, Letty Cottin Pogrebin, Golda Meir, the Triangle Shirtwaist fire, Rosalyn Yalow, Molly Picon, Lilith (the magazine), Roseanne, how Jewish women are portayed on television, Jewish women in popular fiction.... This is an amzing project, and a fantastic set of books. I highly recommend this set to anyone who is considering it enough to be reading this.

            Product Description

The Encyclopedia of Women in the American West chronicles the work of Native American activists such as Mildred Imach Cleghorn, and Sarah Winnemucca, the champion of rights of indigenous peoples who established Nevada's first school for Native Americans in 1884. The encyclopedia also explores the stories of early ranchers. Among them is Freda Ehmann, who founded the California Ripe Olive Association where, according to her grandson, "science and chemical exactness failed, the experience and care of a skillful and conscientious housewife succeeded." Women in the American West have long thrived in the arts. This is evidenced by the work of authors such as Pulitzer Prize winner Willa Cather, Amy Tan, and Linda Hasselstrom, poets such as Hildegarde Flanner, and journalist Molly Ivins. All are profiled in this comprehensive work. The arts are used to address both aesthetic and serious societal issues such as Maxine Hong Kingston's The Woman Warrior, the story of a woman's struggle with identity as a minority in American culture. Academics will appreciate a study of Ruth Underhill's Autobiography of a Papago Woman, which deals with the role of feminist ideology in changing the discipline of anthropology during the first part of the twentieth century. Women in the American West have also achieved many "firsts" such as Utah's Ivy Baker Priest, the first woman to hold the office of Treasurer of the United States, and Georgia Bullock, the first woman judge in the State of California

              Book Description

Few spiritual practices are more intriguing or elusive than those of Zen Judaism,” says David M. Bader in the foreword to Zen Judaism. “This growing movement offers a unique way to follow in the footsteps of the Buddha, ideally without gaining quite so much weight.” These nearly 100 sacred teachings are capable “of bringing about an enlightenment experience so pure, so elevating, and so intense, you could plotz.”

              For you, some samples:

To know the Buddha is the highest attainment. Second highest is to go to the same doctor as the Buddha.

Be here now. Be someplace else later. Is that so complicated?

There is no escaping Karma. In a previous life, you never called, you never wrote, you never visited. And whose fault was that?

If there is no self, whose arthritis is this?

Be patient and achieve all things. Be impatient and achieve all things faster.

Nirvana schmirvana, as long as you're enlightened!

              5 out of 5 stars Entertaining.......2007-01-23

The book succeeds at it's intention - getting a half hour of laughs at innate Judaism within backdrop of Zen Buddhist sayings.

              For example:
              - "Enlightenment is a sudden wordless understanding. Stop telling everyone already"
              - "Seek not the outer enticements. Dwell not in the inner strife. Try to find a nice place in the suburbs with good schools."

Most of the humor appeals directly to members of the tribe.

And please don't confuse this book with one of the same title that is a more serious attempt at linking the Kaballah with Buddha.

5 out of 5 stars You Mean Like These?.......2006-10-04

You should read this book. Yes, you. You know who I mean. YOU.

5 out of 5 stars Now I know where the Jewish Zen e-mails come from.......2005-06-08

Ever get a message called "Jewish Zen" with lines like "If there is no self, whose arthritis is this?" or "Wherever you go, there you are. Your luggage is another story." They're all taken from this book. It's a lovely little item, which I highly recommend.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent, but only in spots........2005-05-28

Overall, I was disappointed with this book. The book was too short, and even then seemed to have been padded. About 1/3 of the sayings were great, but the others should have been replaced by much better ones.

                  Book Description

Enlightenment in the Colony opens up the history of the "Jewish question" for the first time to a broader discussion--one of the social exclusion of religious and cultural minorities in modern times, and in particular the crisis of Muslim identity in modern India.

Aamir Mufti identifies the Hindu-Muslim conflict in India as a colonial variation of what he calls "the exemplary crisis of minority"--Jewishness in Europe. He shows how the emergence of this conflict in the late nineteenth century represented an early instance of the reinscription of the "Jewish question" in a non-Western society undergoing modernization under colonial rule. In so doing, he charts one particular route by which this European phenomenon linked to nation-states takes on a global significance.

Mufti examines the literary dimensions of this crisis of identity through close readings of canonical texts of modern Western--mostly British-literature, as well as major works of modern Indian literature in Urdu and English. He argues that the one characteristic shared by all emerging national cultures since the nineteenth century is the minoritization of some social and cultural fragment of the population, and that national belonging and minority separatism go hand in hand with modernization.

Enlightenment in the Colony calls for the adoption of secular, minority, and exilic perspectives in criticism and intellectual life as a means to critique the very forms of marginalization that give rise to the uniquely powerful minority voice in world literatures.

                      Book Description

Antonio’s Devils deals both historically and theoretically with the origins of modern Hebrew and Yiddish literature by tracing the progress of a few remarkable writers who, for various reasons and in various ways, cited Scripture for their own purpose, as Antonio’s “devil,” Shylock, does in The Merchant of Venice.

By examining the work of key figures in the early history of Jewish literature through the prism of their allusions to classical Jewish texts, the book focuses attention on the magnificent and highly complex strategies the maskilim employed to achieve their polemical and ideological goals. Dauber uses this methodology to examine foundational texts by some of the Jewish Enlightenment’s most interesting and important authors, reaching new and often surprising conclusions.

                              Book Description

The Berlin Jewish community was both the pioneer in intellectual modernization and the first to experience a crisis of modernity. This original and imaginative book connects intellectual and political transformation with the social structures and daily activities of the Jewish community. Steven M. Lowenstein has used extraordinarily rich documentation about the life of Berlin Jewry in the period and assembled a collective biography of the entire community of Berlin Jews. He has examined tax lists, subscription lists, genealogical records, and address lists as well as kosher meat accounts to give us a vivid picture of daily life. On another level in detailing the complexity of Jewish life in Berlin during this period, this book illuminates the connections between the "peaceful stage" of enlightenment and the crisis that followed.
