"Chea, how come good doesn't win over evil?" young Chanrithy Him asks her sister, after the brutal Khmer Rouge have seized power in Cambodia, but before hunger makes them too weak for philosophy. Chea answers only with a proverb: When good and evil are thrown together into the river of life, first the klok or squash (representing good) will sink, and the armbaeg or broken glass (representing evil) will float. But the broken glass, Chea assures her, never floats for long: "When good appears to lose, it is an opportunity for one to be patient, and become like God."
Before this proverb could come true, Chanrithy had to watch her mother, father, and five of her brothers and sisters die, murdered by the Khmer Rouge or fatally weakened by malnutrition, disease, and overwork. Now living in Oregon, where she studies posttraumatic stress disorder among Cambodian survivors, Chanrithy has written a first-person account of the killing fields that's remarkable for both its unflinching honesty and its refusal to despair. In wrenchingly immediate prose, she describes atrocities the rest of the world might prefer to ignore: her sick yet still breathing mother, thrown along with corpses into a well; a pregnant woman beaten to death with a spade, the baby struggling inside her; a sister impossibly swollen with edema, her starving body leaking fluid from the webbing between her toes.
The mind retreats from horrors like these--and yet what emerges most strongly from this memoir is the triumph of life. Chanrithy is determined to honor her pledge to the dying Chea, to study medicine so she can help others live. When Broken Glass Floats accomplishes the same goal in a different way. "As a survivor, I want to be worthy of the suffering that I endured," Chanrithy writes; by giving such eloquent voice to her dead, she has proven herself more than worthy of her suffering--and theirs. --Chloe Byrne
Book Description
In this mesmerizing story, finalist for the Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize, Chanrithy Him vividly recounts her trek through the hell of the "killing fields." She gives us a child's-eye view of a Cambodia where rudimentary labor camps for both adults and children are the norm and modern technology no longer exists. Death becomes a companion in the camps, along with illness. Yet through the terror, the members of Chanrithy's family remain loyal to one another, and she and her siblings who survive will find redeemed lives in America. 15 b/w photographs.

A Trek to the Past.......2007-08-18
When Broken Glass Floats is the author's journey to find the magic of a world lost as a result of the Khmer Rouge. This book, as a personal account of the Khmer Rouge regime, is also my personal journey as a reader and a Khmer person. Through this magical journey, my own forgotten memories are awakened and many traditional beliefs that I have pushed to the back of my mind resurface.
I was too young to have memories of the Killing Fields, but I have heard enough stories to feel connected to it. There were gaps missing in my memory and this book filled those gaps. When Broken Glass Floats is poetic and touching, a book rooted in the author's desire to let the world know about the tragic death of her family. It begins when her memories are awakened as a result of her work as an interpreter and interviewer for the Khmer Adolescent Project, studying post-traumatic stress disorder among Cambodian survivors. This is a story of triumph, survival, and hope written from the Khmer soul of a Cambodian-American woman.
When Broken Glass Floats is a book with two moving and powerful purposes: one, as a therapeutic tool for the author, and, two, as a reminder of an event that should never have occurred. The author describes her book as a way "to use the power of words to caution the world, and in the process to heal myself" (p. 23). The process of writing the book became a trek to the Himalayas, "a search to recapture the long-lost magic in [her] life" (p. 23). My travels have taken me to the Himalayas. I have been seeking magic for my own healing like the author of When Broken Glass Floats. The process of reading her book and other autobiographies has provided much healing. I recommend this book for everyone who is interested in this subject, but in particular to Cambodian-Americans, because this book can take you on a journey into yourself, your soul, memories, and past.
Good reading in preparation for Cambodia trip.......2007-03-15
I read this first and then Pol Pot, by Philip Short, in preparation for a trip to Cambodia. The combination was excellent. Short's historical, researched book helped me analyze what had happened and why. Him's book gave a personal story to go with it. While I traveled in Cambodia, I thought back to her comments as often as I remembered Short's history. Together, they gave me a much better travel experience.
Heart-Wrenching.......2006-11-05
this is one of the most heart-wrenching stories I've ever heard told, and it well illustrates what can happen when such a ridiculous, unrealistic political ideology as fanatical socialism/communism - and its well-armed proponents - cause a country to self-destruct. I read this book while in Cambodia, so it had all that much more impact, and I constantly found myself looking at older people - and there seemed to be disporportionately very few people over the age of about 50, which in itself is probably part of the story - and wondering what they went through, or what they inflicted on others, back in those horrible Khmer Rouge days.
Should be required reading.......2006-07-01
I met Ms. Him at a book signing and have a hardcover signed by her. She is a beautiful, gentle woman with one of the most musical voices I have ever heard. To listen to the stories of unspeakable horror that issued from her lips as she read a passage chilled me. She is my age; while I was struggling with Algebra, she was struggling with pure evil. I promised her that I would do my best to never let her story be forgotten. My children will be required to read this when they reach the age she was in the book.
Evil exists, and it will only grow stronger if we ignore it.
A Must Read.......2006-04-07
This is a great biography of a Child's perspective of the Khamer Rougue take over in Cambodia in the 1970's. Chanrithy's story will stir up every emotion in you. This is a real story about survival during a very dark time in history. Her escapes from labor death camps, while nearly dying from starvation and sickness. The constant fear of military attack, or excecution by the Khamer Rouge soldiers. The loss of innocence, freedom, family, Friends, a life she once knew and culture she once cherished.
This is a must read for all. Chanrithy's story really breaks through all the "static" of media coverage that we hear about on the news everyday regarding similar things going on all over the world and opens the eyes of the reader to see the PEOPLE who live through these horrific experiences, and how their lives are forever changed. What I realized from reading this story is how little we as a culture are aware of what horrors have existed in the past, and the horrors that exist now. It is a travesty that we are so blind.

The SWAT Workout.......2007-03-09
Book arrived in a very timely manner and has helped my daughter pump up her workout.
Great for Law Enforcement and ANYONE ELSE!.......2007-02-12
I was a personal trainer for four years and then trained with the local Sheriff's Dept. I am a strong enthusiast of a healthy body and healthy mind. This book got me into the best shape I have been in since I was playing football and soccer in high school. I would recommend this book to anyone in law enforcement or anyone who wishes to whip themselves into the best shape of their lives. A+++
Great way to break through a plateau.......2006-10-11
I bought this book a little over a month ago, and I must say that it is a great book. The workouts, while incorporating everything from weights to calisthenics, are different than most workout you will have seen before. The workouts require very little in the way of equipment, but do require you to show up every day ready to give 100%. These workouts are not for the weak at heart! I will definitely look into other titles/workouts by Stew Smith.
Stew Smith is Awesome.......2006-09-30
Stew Smith has honestly helped me get into the best shape of my life. And it keeps getting better. No bs, no gimmicks, just a practical yet challenging plan to achieve well-rounded fitness.
Great !!!!!!!!.......2006-09-28
I,ve worked out for several years, done everything. Stew Smith's work out is far out the best. Even after 10 days I made progress. I'm using the Swat work out. All the money I,ve spend on fitness magazine's, etc.. is lost. The SWAT WORK OUT is for ever.
Book Description
An inside look at our first line of defense against terrorists and hostage takers Ever since Charles Whitman gunned down over a dozen innocent people in 1966 from his perch atop the University of Texas clock tower, "SWAT team" has become a household word. In this compelling book, police veteran Robert L. Snow takes us into the midst of the nation's heroic SWAT teams, allowing us to eavesdrop on harrowing negotiations between killers and cops. He gives us a balanced look at what SWAT teams do right and what they do wrong and recommends ways to improve their tactics in future hostage situations. While he gives no-holds-barred analyses of such dire failures as Waco, he also celebrates SWAT's greatest triumphs-thousands of incidents in which no one was hurt. No policeman or citizen can afford to miss this harrowing yet hopeful look at society's main weapon against sudden terror. "A riveting account of the inner workings of SWAT...Fascinating and informative!" -Don M. Hartsough, Ph D., Consultant,

SWAT made simple.......2006-06-05
Very simple yet elaborate enough to get some depth of SWAT. I'm not a law enforcer but just wanted to know more about SWAT. This book helped me a lot understand many aspects of SWAT such as Hostage Negotiations, Site Assault, Perimeters and Security, Team Work, etc. Very good read, and it has some useful pictures too.
Good as Introduction to SWAT.......2003-08-13
This is a good introductory book for a person interested in finding out more about SWAT. However, it's little more than review for any law enforcement officer familiar with the basic SOP's and structure of their department's team. It is mostly anecdotal evidence and uses the same "suspect takes hostage, SWAT kills suspect or suspect surrenders" storyline to illustrate why those SOP's and structure exists.
A story book.......2003-02-24
This book is not a good book for people that are interested in learning SWAT tecnics and tactics. This book is a good book for people that are interested in SWAT storys.
Ovcourse that you learn something by reading these real life SWAT situations but is not enougth for someone that practices airsoft.
Good book, but..........2003-01-11
This is a good book about SWAT how they work and all kind of different missions they do. It gives good information about SWAT and how they work. BUT I must say that this book don't "show" anything new! Everything is SOP ( and I am not a police officer) and it says the book show how to improve tactics-well it shows NOT!! It show some things, but...but how should I say- basic. The author could go much deeper into this I think. The book is good written but if you are looking to improve your tactics, well then this book is not for you. And like someone said "sometimes it is little TOO American" and I agree...
Good book for beginners and people who want to know how it is inside SWAT. For others, well maybee a good read but that's it.
Swat Teams.......2002-06-12
SWAT Teams
By:
Robert L. Snow
This book is a like a manual. It starts out by telling how that cop's life is going to be when he signs up for the team he has always wanted to be a part of. It's gives that feeling, that if you make it then you are the best. It not only shows the pain to become the best and the life of being the best, but it also shows the tragedy that follows our lives. Our destiny, Death. It shows this is a way we'd rather not see it, but in the way that it really is. It sort of helps to calm those whom have lost their partner in an operation like this by telling the world their pain. And in it those who have this pain now have a place to turn to because their dearest freinds and closest family members have a generl idea of what it is like for them. For the seargents and veterans who train these cops, but even all their knowledge and experience can't save them. It shows how inevitable death is. But most importantly of all, it shows the men and women who have the courage to put forth their own life to help make hundreds of others safer.
SWAT Teams is what I call a first look book. It can be considered a career book because of its factual information. It talks about all the components needed to run a well trained SWAT Team. And it contains information from how an officer is to be traied to what type of weapons he must use. It also provides real stories about their horroric efforts. Including those that have succeeded and those that have failed. One story that started the idea of a SWAT Team and is by far one of the scarriest stories in the book is, The Texas Tower Sniper. Here a man went up to the clock tower of the University of Texas an began shooting the students and teachers on the campus. When the police arrived they became his next target. After an hour and a half Chief Miles ordered an assualt by through the use of armored cars on the shooter. They used the armored cars to get close enough to safely get into the building. Here they traveled to the top of the building and eliminated him.
This is just one of the many stories inside this book. It is a mindturning book and I strongly reccomend it for any person who has a dream to become a SWAT officer or who already is.
Book Description
This book teaches police departments, paramilitary units or security companies how to organize a SWAT team that can react decisively to any crisis. Learn how to recruit, train and equip for urban or rural warfare; master hand-to-hand combat; adapt infantry tactics to civilian tasks; and much more.
Customer Reviews:
Too Basic and simple.......2007-06-20
I bought this book hoping to learn the tactics used by SWAT units. I was incredibly disappointed. The author begins by trying to explain rifle platoon tactics, but he does a very poor job. Anything the author does explain, anyone who would purchase this book already knows.
Battle tactics: Not in this book.......2007-01-04
This book is horrible at best. If you follow this book you will end up injured or dead. Do not expect to find tactics or something remotely similar. The few "Tactics" they do suggest are not even remotely explained enough for a basic reader to understand. If you were in the military you will recognize what the writer was getting at, but fails to explain the concepts. I want my money back, but I wouldn't sell it to do so. I'll just burn my copy.
Battle Tactics.......2006-03-15
Tactics not really explored. The title is a real teaser because you believe you might learn something by reading it. If you have played a shooter video game you will learn more about tactics than from this book. Waste of time and money.
I had higher expectations........2005-07-28
I am a police officer, and I purchased this particular book to gain some insight on a unit that I aspire to join. Unfortunately, this book offered only the most superficial and general information to the reader. I particularly didn't think their fitness views had any scientific basis for their arguments and claims. I agree that martial arts are a great asset, but I can't imagine how that could replace a fitness routine.
Good Starting Point for Security Concious Individuals.......2003-08-05
This is an outsanding introduction for the security concious individual with a hankering to learn hand signals, containment procedures and team morale boosting when engaged in armed insurgency type operations. For too long the security concious have suffered from a dearth of suitable training materials relying on outmoded advice from cry-baby drop-outs from the police, military and security industries. Cascio and McSweeny offer sage advice by asking questions such as, when "sceching" a building site for through-the-window rope drops, have you supplied your SWAT team with suitable clothing? It may seem obvious to the more cynical reviwers on these pages that this is basic information, but I found their advice on knee-padding to be frankly invaluable, as attempting to break a hostage situation or terrorist type situation in say, a t shirt and shorts, is simply not suitable. I could go on and recommend this fine book and its detailed contents but I urge anyone who wants to equip a SWAT team - and we're talking *guns* here people, not harsh language - this is the best place to start.
Customer Reviews:
Very basic information, only for amertures & non-pros.......1999-11-19
Those who say this book is good is obviously non SWAT personnel or public with superficial understanding in SWAT tactis. The info is very surface and basic. Not much help for the professioal SWAT member. I was in the Commando Forces of my country's Armed Forces and I know what I'm talking about!
This book not for experience police officers........1999-07-06
If you are a police officer, this book is probably not something that will give you any information you don't know; even if you have never been a SWAT member. The book is okay for someone who does not know anything about SWAT. It apparently is meant just to be a general book explaining what a SWAT unit does. It has some good photographs, but it is definitely not written for police officers. It is less than basic general knowledge.
Buy this book!!.......1999-05-28
I brought this book along on the day I recently spent with the Ventura PD SWAT team. When I got the book out & showed it to the guys on the team, they were much amused to find that one of the teams profiled was the Modesto team, whom they had just beaten in the '99 California SWAT team championships, by two places. The Ventura team came in third overall out of 26 teams.
All the guys who looked at the book thought the info was well-presented & pretty accurate. As a civilian, I was very much impressed with Halberstadt's writing style, the quality of the photos & the amount of detail given on just how teams operate. For someone who wants to understand how a SWAT team works, this is the book to buy.
Only recommendation for the second edition is that Hans profile the Ventura team-a great bunch of guys & very professional!!
A great overview of police SWAT teams and tactics........1998-08-11
I'm not a police officer, or even a police buff, but I bought this book because after playing Sierra's "Police Quest: SWAT 2" PC game I wanted to find out more about these extrodinary peace officers... and this book has it all. A quality narrative with plenty of excellent photographs to suppliment the text, I highly recommend the book for anyone who wants to gain a renewed respect for the special weapons and tactics police officers who may dress like space-age storm troopers, but whose mission is primarily to save lives.
Dynamic look at the world of the tactical officer.......1998-06-12
Once again, Hans Halberstadt proves why he is an American master of photo journalism with an honest, hard-hitting and beautifully illustrated title. As someone who has been on the line of officers awaiting to burst through a perp's door, few books afford the enthusiast and the SWAT team commander as insightful a profile as does this book. Add it to your collection at once!

To the Point Training Manual.......2006-03-31
I have the pleasure of knowing Michael Holm on a personal level and find when reading this book, I can hear the voice of a strong leader and instructor. This man believed in his work and put the best interests of his team first, giving them the training they needed to stay alive on a mission.
If you are in this line of work, this book is a must read. It is filled with information, technique and facts that can help in your career. It is a training manual and if you use what applies to yourself, you can store the knowledge until a situation warrants use.
This book should be considered as a required textbook, it's top notch.
good book but lousy illustrations.......2005-11-20
this book was very interresting, but the illustrations on page 83 to page 95 were pathetic. I expected the entire book to be great, but then I saw those hand signals. The author shows hand signals by using stick figures, I believe that if someone were trying to learn the hand signals, they would have a hard time doing so. The illustrations should have been a bit more professional, if the author wanted to use illustrations, why not just use the hands, or even use a drawing of a full person with the hand movements. I expected more from this book. I am in law enforcement, and have had to use hand signals before, but would recommend that you read this for the information, but research the silent hand signals somewhere else.
Highly Recommended.......2004-11-03
Could be a better if more illustrations were utilized; but overall this is a good book. Very informative with the basics of Training and Strategies. I highly recommended it to all new SWAT and HRT Operators.
AMAZING.......2002-09-26
This man is currently an instructor at NMU and he's amazing. I was able to thumb through his book, and I believe its a great training manual for anyone who is going to be in a SWAT team or even FBI, DEA, CIA, Federal Marshall.... all the training in this book applies to all fields. Mike Holm has certainly gone through the experiences to have the knowledge and know how to put this great book together. I think if you're even considering a job in any of these fields I've mentioned that you should take a look at this book. It may very well help you further your career and help you when you begin your own training.

Book Description
To research a book, some authors go to libraries. Some interview cops or do ride-alongs. I try to blow myself up. A good example is the fact that I researched my best-selling suspense WITH A VENGEANCE by attending Tactical EMS School, which trains paramedics, nurses and doctors to respond as the medic on SWAT teams. A trauma nurse with training in forensics, I am really excited by this advance in both medicine and law enforcement. As an author I think it makes for a great character. As a forty-something mother, I was just glad I survived school.

Great for Kids.......2003-08-30
This book was a hit with some in my classes, especially those who were interested in more active careers during our last Career Day. It helps them understand that any job, even the most exciting ones still require a lot of focus and preparation which translates to doing well in school and learning. As the S.W.A.T. movie had been recently released the subject matter couldn't have been more appealing. Even some of the girls liked it!
