From Aerosmith's heyday in the late 1970s, which they spent "gacked to the nines" (as lead singer Steven Tyler puts it), to the Aerosmith of today--clean, sober, and adored by millions--the band has a long, hard history. Walk This Way chronicles the whole story: drugs, booze, and all.

Prefaced with the now familiar rock-star "intervention," when Steven Tyler's loved ones cornered him in his manager's office in 1986, the autobiography traces Aerosmith's twisted road, from their New Hampshire roots to their success in Boston to the worldwide fame that they long craved and currently enjoy. Tyler kicks off this rock & roll exposé, briefly recounting the history of his ancestors in Italy and sharing incidents from his own Northeast childhood. The book is written in interview style, with all five band members talking candidly about the good times--and the bad. We also hear from girlfriends, wives, friends, and various hangers-on.

The story of Aerosmith and their constant ups, downs, and detours never fails to grab you and force you to read another page--if only to see what train wreck awaits around the next corner. Walk This Way is a must-read for devoted fans of Aerosmith as well as anybody who wants to live the full-on '70s rock-star life--without having to go through rehab. --Paul DeBruler

Book Description

Hang on, it's a hell of a ride!

From the band that lived by the motto "Anything worth doing was worth overdoing" -- Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Tom Hamilton, Brad Whitford, and Joey Kramer -- comes a quarter century of rock godhood: the life, the music, the truth, the hell, the lost years, and the raunchy, unsafe sex.

And, of course, the drugs.

But after crashing in a suffocating cloud of cocaine, crystal meth, and heroin, Aerosmith rose up from the ashes to become clean and sober -- and reclaim their rightful title as World Champion Rockers. Learn how they did it in a book that is pure Aerosmith unbound: where they came from, what they are now, and what they will always be -- a great American band.

You couldn't make this stuff up! I'm 40 something as well and from the mid-west. This book will take you back in time for sure. It's a ride that we lived in that time. If you read this book you should be glad we are alive. Nothing but fun to read and hard to put down. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars A Great American Rock band's saga.......2007-06-12

I really liked this book. I'm probably biased, being from the same area as Aerosmith, but I really liked the details of the behind the scenes business aspect of this book. That they we that messed up up on drugs and totally crashed and burned only to rise again is rare and really remarkable. If anyone doubts they are one of the greatest American hard rock bands, just put on "Rocks" and listen carefully. One of the best hard rock albums of the genre and possibly of all time period.

OK....I'm old.I was part of the whole Kiss vs Aerosmith thing during the 70's(I was a Kiss freak). This book is an AMAZING look into the history of Aerosmith....warts and all.The sex,the drugs....everything!I found the dynamic between Steve Trler and Joe Perry especially interesting.Actually, the book dives deep into the relationships between ALL the band members,girlfriends,managers....everybody!

This book is well written. Despite the many voices blended together, the book is very readable, much more so than its Motley Crue counterpart :dirt"

5 out of 5 stars Great read!.......2006-06-18

This history of Aerosmith shows the incredible fortitude that is required to reclaim your throne. Great to hear how it was from the beginning... in their own words and in the words of their friends, wives and lovers... all the drugs, sex, pain and loss.

Steven is the consummate showman... always smarter than the next guy, always a ladies man. He is delicious, confusing and talented. In order to be a great singer, you must have charisma and attitude. It pours from Steven in buckets.

No matter what you read or think about Aerosmith, good or bad, don't forget the amazing music this band has put out for decades. Keep going, guys. I'll always be a fan!

      5 out of 5 stars A Tribute To Heroes.......2004-07-22

Liberators is a great documentary that became a political football, because it challenged the idea of WWII as a white man's war (the Japanese alone would disagree) and showed the undisputed fact that segregated Black units, which were supposed not to have fought, not only did well, and participated in the Battle Of The Bulge, but liberated several concentration camps on their way to Berlin. These units faced hardships not encountered by White units, in that they were subject to the discrimination of the day, and were denied time away from the front until the end of the war. One of the unfair, but vicious, attacks are that this documentary is "a hoax", or "exaggerated". Well let us see. Benjamin Bender, who certainly believed he was imprisoned in Dachau concentration camp, saw Black tankers and troopers when he was liberated. This is pretty hard to explain away. Then, there is the charge that the units in question were "too far away". Well, according to the CO of the 183 Combat Engineers, Lt. Colonel Lawrence J. Fuller, at any time, his troops were dispersed over an area of 100 miles. The same for the 761st, who had units attached to whatever unit needed them. This was the result of a conscious decision to keep them apart as much as possible. Being headquartered within 60 miles of Dachau, the 761st's Sherman M4 tanks had a cruising range of 120 miles - you do the math on that one. In the end, to be extremely charitable, maybe the camp they liberated went by another name (Gunskirchen has been mentioned) than Dachau. That does not make this documentary "a hoax". Even if the tankers who went back with Benjamin Bender to pay their respects in the documentary, were merely in the same unit and were not the ones who actually helped liberate the camp or him, that doesn't make them anything less than heroes. The real question is: what is the fuss all about? Why the hatred and vehemence? Only the lowest form of racist would deny these heroes their achievements. I believe mr. Bender.

1 out of 5 stars This book demeans its subject.......2003-09-15

How do you give no stars?

This book is the worst form of racist patronization.

Among combat veterans, your deeds speak for you. The deeds of this TD Battalion - and many other units, both "colored" and all white - have gone too long unacknowledged. But to shamelessly manufacture "exploits" is the lowest form of boasting, and simple demeans these men's true accomplishments.

To paraphrase (only because I cannot recall the exact words) the words of one of the unit veterans who decried this book, "What we did speaks for itself". I don't think anything else need be said about this bogus history.

1 out of 5 stars Its a Hoax! No "all-black units" Liberated Buchenwald........2000-07-31

I have read "Liberators: Fighting On Two Fronts in World War II" and although I fully agree with its authors' criticism of the scandalous manner in which the African-American GIs were treated during World War II, I violently disagee with their concoction of a hoax according to which two so-called "all-black units" would have liberated Buchenwald and Dachau.

I am particularly familiar with that subject considering that, in addition to the fact that I am a Buchenwald survivor who was there on April 11, 1945... the day of that camp's liberation... I have also been researching the history of the concentration camps since 1969.

First of all, as far as Buchenwald is concerned, it was not liberated by a unit of the U,S. Army but by the 900 members of that camp's underground organization and was subsequently discovered by a four-man patrol of the 6th Armored Division.

The two "all-black units" involved could not possibly have been there considering that, according to the Morning Reports obtained from the Army Reference Branch of the National Personnel Center, the locations of these units were as follows:

      (1) 183RD ENGINEER COMBAT BATALION.-

On April 11, 1945, the locations of the sub-units of the above battalion were: (a) Mommenheim (192 miles from Buchenwald)for the Headquarters and Service Company; (b)Hocheim am Main (183 miles from Buchenwald) for Company A; (c) Loerzweiler (192 and 1/2 miles from Buchenwald) for Company B and (d) Boppard (284 miles from Buchenwald) for Company C.

      (2) 761ST TANK BATTALION.-

On the day of Buchenwald's self-liberation, the sub-units of the 761st were stationed at: (a) Hildburghausen (70) mles from Buchenwald) for the Headquarters Company, the Service Company and Companies A and D; (b) Oeslau (79 miles from Buchenwald)for Company B and (c) Rottenbach (69 and 1/2 miles from Buchenwald) for Company C.

Now,as far as Dachau is concerned, some of the veterans of the 761st Tank Battalion have made the ludicrous claim that they liberated both Buchenwald and Dachau, however, the latter camp was liberated on April 29, 1945 by the 42nd and 45th Infantry Divisions.

On the day of Dachau's liberation, the sub-units of the 761st Tank Battalion were located at (A) Straubing (78 miles from Dachau) for the Headquarters Company, the Service Company and Company D; (B)Eltheim (83 miles from Dachau) for Companies A and B and (C) Salching (73 miles from Dachau) for Company C.

The liberation of Buchenwald and Dachau by these two battalions is a fabrication of historical fiction and there is no doubt in my mind that it was concocted for the purpose of improving relations between the African-American and Jewish communities... a worthy cause which should not have been served in such an unethical way.

A particularly disgusting aspect of that charade is that the U.S Holocaust Memorial Museum has been supporting and promoting the handful of veterans of those two battalions who have been involved in publicizing that hoax.

4 out of 5 stars This books presents a subject that has long been ignored........1999-10-17

This book presents a subject that has long been ignored by the rest of America. The shameful events Black soldiers had to endure have been swept under the rug for to many years. This book lightly touches on the prejudice that took place during the WWII. There is still much that needs to be told. However, the records are basically kept secret. Due to again to the powers that be in DC and the monumental cost of obtaining these records.

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book a must in anyone's library.......1999-06-14

My father served in Patton's third Army and I can tell you that many of the conquests now being reported happened, many of the records stored about the campaigns these valiant men fought were lost in a warehouse fire in St Louis,MI. So the records are from the ones who had original documents before the fire and eyewitness accounts. The Book is a fantastic account of what the 761st conquered from the vantage point of the war front and their home front.. It vindicates the unjustices done to the memory of the fallen ones and it places credit where it is due; into the hands of these great men who fought with courage, honor and faith... A must in anyone's library.. Have amazon track this out of print book through their used book purveyors.. I am so glad it's in my bookshelf, I often reach for it reading parts to better understand what man like my father went through...

      Book Description

By the end of World War Two, the tank was established as one of the most potent battle winners in history. Between 1939 and 1945 over 280,000 tanks of all types had been built by the major combatants - 105,000 by the Soviets alone. The tank had undoubtedly become the main weapon of the land-based army. This book covers in comprehensive detail the development, production and battlefield use by the forces of Great Britain, the Commonwealth, the USA, the Soviet Union, France, Germany, Italy and Japan, as well as the other combatant countries.

5 out of 5 stars World War Two series.......2001-12-13

I'm the happy owner of this master piece and two others from the same series(WW2 AFV's & Self-propelled artillery also by George Forty and WW2 Military Vehicles by g.n. Georgano) but this one is clearly the best "handbook" about WW2 tanks you ever get.

This book concentrates on the Tanks high days, the Battlefields of World War two !

The deversity and info gathered about all major countries (and even some others) is the best i have ever seen.
Countries included are the USA, Germany, Soviet Union, Great Brittain and Commonwealth but also countries like Hungary and Sweden.

But the best part is of course it's loaded with Pictures (recent color pictures and Black and white pictures). You'll find the Shermans and Tigers in it, but prototypes and failures(like the Maus and the Bob Semple tank) are not forgotten.
You will be surprised by all the types in service, mentioned here.

As a World War Two addict this one can't be missed, Lieutenant Colonal George Forty at his best!

5 out of 5 stars If you are looking for one book on this subject this it it!.......1998-05-23

Usually to find this much information covering this subject it is necessary to purchase several books and sift through them until you find what you need. Mr. Forty with his background has not only covered most types but their variants as well, I can't wait to receive the other two companion books. I would rate this book as a "Super Osprey".

4 out of 5 stars Typical but good reference.......2006-01-30

For those that need a starter reference book on World War II allied tanks, this will due. Most books have the same material repeated, and this is not much difference except you have a reliable author putting the information together. A fine addition to your reference library on World War II.

3 out of 5 stars British and american tanks of WWII.......2005-09-01

Not to bad. Excellent references to unusual variants. good detail about equipment, usage and weaknesses.

      4 out of 5 stars allied tanks.......2003-01-14

In many ways not up to standard with its German partner, Encyclopedia of German tanks of World War Two. Armor is not given section by section breakdown, but maximum and minimum. Allied armored cars, which were quite numerous, are not listed, unlike their German equivelent.

But on the positive side, an appendix of british and American tank armament is included in the back that is in far more detail than the one provided in the German one which is excellent reading. And the same can also be said of engines.

A good refurence in regards to the British, American, Canadian and Australian tanks and their sub types.

3 out of 5 stars Generic: Wished it was much better........2002-06-25

I guess my expectations for this book were too high, especially when you compare it against its German counterpart [both by Chamberlain and the prequel by von Segner]. As an armor historian, I wanted a thorough breakdown of technical data, like the German work, along with a more thorough explanation of different marks and variants.
4 pages of line drawings at the end only makes you want more.
This is a good work if you are starting off in the field, or needed someone to explain certain details for ASL. However, it is way too cut and dried and much of this information is available on the internet.
      Wish it was much better.

2 out of 5 stars Not comparable to Encyclopedia of German Tanks.......2001-10-10

I bought this book because I was impressed by its counterpart on German armor. I was disappointed to notice that it doesn't live up to that standard. Where the 'German' book covered each version with technical data, this book often simply summed up all known versions, with a very brief description, often not even mentioning in service date (year) and production numbers. For example, the 24 pages long M4 Sherman section only contains 2 'technical' specification listings.... Same goes for the British Churchill tank section, only a single technical spec list. On the positive side are the sections on more obscure models and prototypes, almost all with illustration(s).

5 out of 5 stars Awesome history of German Tanks.......2007-07-28

I seen German tanks in this book I've never heard of. It is a definite addition to any WW2 historians collection .

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source of reference.......2004-06-23

This book remains one of the best sources of reference regarding German military vehicles during the Second World War. However, it should not be mistaken like some of the previous reviewers that this book is some sort of history book on the German forces. If anyone wishes to read how well the Panther or a Tiger did in combat, read else where. This book remains a data reference source. In this book, you will find all you ever want to find on the technical military data of all individual German military vehicles and their different model types. I found the information to be highly useful in almost every usage I get out of it, as a historian, wargamer, modeller and even as a film reviewer.

The book claims to be a definitive book on the German military vehicles and for once, this is not an over hype. It would be hard to find another book which hold this much information and data on all the individual German military vehicles as this. I would considered this book as one of the mandatory books in any World War II historian's library.

(In clarification, this book covered all the combat vehicles which served with the German military. It doesn't covered vehicles like Schwimmwagen or Kubelwagen or regular army truck.)

4 out of 5 stars Mile wide and a foot deep.......2004-04-21

The book gives a great account of all AFV in the German inventory. The short comings of the book are evident in the lack of color photographs and information regarding how the unit was used/performed in battle.

The rest of the book deals with the Panzers themselves, a chapter for each Panzer, giving the details of how and why each type was made, the weapons, powerplants, the different varients and first hand accounts from German tankers. This is the best photo encyclopedia of German WWII armor I have ever purchased. Great photos, information, and organization.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps the best overview of World War II German armor.......1997-07-17

The Encyclopedia of German Tanks of World War II covers virtually every combatvehicle produced by Germany from 1929 through 1945. At least 90% of the vehicles are depicted in either photographs (most common) or drawings (for prototypical vehicles).

As a builder of 1/35th scale armor, this book provides an excellent ready reference. An emphasis is placed on the vital statistics of each vehicle including (but not limited to): the number produced, the various designations of the vehicle, the engine, range, armament, ammunition carried, and armor angle and thinckness.

Each mark (or Ausfurung) of each vehicle has its own entry, for example, the Panther is split into entries for the Ausf. D, Ausf. A, Ausf. G, and even the Ausf. F (with the Jagdpanther and Bergenpanther being separate as well). Differences between the models are detailed as well.

While the photographs in this book are not comprehensive enough from which to accurize a kit, the text does not unique features of each vehicle (which can be, in turn, looked for in other photographs).

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interesed in World War II armor, especially anyone who builds armor models.
