Book Description
The subversive songs of Tom Lehrer, the sardonic piano-wielding fugitive from Harvard, have corrupted generations of Americans since he first began recording and performing in the 1950s. His uniquely depraved wit has been forced again on an unsuspecting public' via Tomfoolery, the stage revue based on his ever-trenchant observation of the American scene. This new songbook, with old favorites unavailable for years as well as never-published songs, is the most comprehensive ever assembled. It contains the words, tunes, piano accompaniments, and guitar chords for these thirty-four classics:
The Irish Ballad
Fight Fiercely, Harvard!
Be Prepared
The Old Dope Peddler
The Wild West Is Where I
Want to Be
I Wanna Go Back to Dixie

THIS COLLECTION IS BUT A HINT OF THE MAN'S GENIUS.......2007-09-02
I grew up listening to Tom Lehrer's records (played on our Victrola). And, although I wasn't worldly enough to understand some of the more perverse lyrics, my sister and I would belt out his songs with great enthusiasm. The fact that, as a kindergartner, I stood up and sang one of his compositions during "show and tell" is a testimony to...uh...something...I'm not quite sure. However, I clearly remember my mother's horror at being called by my teacher about the content of my presentation. Years later we could both laugh. Thank God Mrs. Ernstein had a good sense of humor. Thank God too that CPS was not in existence in the early 60s.
My point? Mr/Dr (never was sure of his academic title) Lehrer's ability to put into song politically incorrect "We don't talk about it" issues made me a fan for life. My own children have gotten a healthy dose of his humor, and compare him to Weird Al and others of their generation. Weird Al has a long way to go before he can hope to eclipse the senator of sarcasm.
So, for those of you with a bit of a twisted sense of humor (and the ability to read music/play the piano), this is a great piece of musical history, psycho sing-along material, and a chance to keep one man's sense of the ridiculous alive.
P.S. I was never called by any teacher regarding the contents of my children's musical presentations. Live and learn.
Loads of fun.......2007-03-14
Hilarious and dark songs by the master of musical gallows humor. The song choices are extensive and well picked. Only complaint is that Lobachevsky and New Math don't have chords/scores for large portions, just the lyrics.
You can never have too many Tom Lehrer songs!.......2007-01-23
I bought the song book along with "The Remains of Tom Lehrer" (three CD's and a biographical book). A great purchase for us dead-hard Lehrer fans.
I was delighted that I bought the song book as I can now sing (out of tune) and strum my guitar (rather badly) to many of his infamous songs and annoy the hell out of my children.
tom lehrer book.......2006-11-11
good book, great choice of repertoire- his sonds are a bit grisly but perfect if you need something to wake the audience up! definitely got my money's worth.
So long mom, I'm off to drop the bomb, so don't wait up for me.......2006-08-14
Yes, this is the book you definitely want to have! Every Tom Lehrer song you can think of--and probably many you can't-are here in a fairly easy piano format. If you can't play piano, you can probably read the lyrics. If you can't read the lyrics, you're probably not reading this, but you can still see the drawings by Ronald Searle, which are pretty funny in their own right. If you can't see the drawings by Ronald Searle, I can't help you.
The lyrics are also contained, of course. And besides the satirical songs Mr. Lehrer recorded in the sixties, the book also contains the songs he wrote for the Electric Company in the seventies, like "Silent E" ("Who can turn a can, into a cane", etc.) and "L-Y".
The only problem I have with this book is that I believe all music books that are meant to be used for playing instruments should be spiral bound or otherwise fixed such that they don't fall apart. Since this one has a regular glued binding, of course after a few rounds with "A Song for World War III" and "New Math", all the pages fell out. So to the publisher: please make a spiral bound edition! Then I will give this book 5 stars!
Customer Reviews:
Fun to play, fun to sing, great family fun.......1998-08-11
The songs are hilarious and perverse enough to really appeal to kids (from 2 to 102). My family has spent many happy hours raucously singing these around the piano. My son had great fun memorizing the elements song and speed-singing it. Some of the songs are dated, and I wish Tom Lehrer were writing new stuff, but you won't be sorry getting this book!

Book Description
The Gallipoli expedition of 1915, the brainchild of Winston Churchill, was designed to knock the Turkish Empire out of the First World War and open a supply route to Russia. The campaign is characterised by the military incompetence of the higher commands, particularly the Allies. However, in spite of this, Gallipoli deserves to be, and is, also remembered for the heroism and resourcefulness of both the British army and the men of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. This book details the battles, hardships and eventual evacuation that these men had to go through, in this comprehensive guide to the Gallipoli landings.

An Excellent Jumping-Off Point...........2002-12-10
One of the best things that Haythornthwaite's book has going for it is the concise, easy-to-understand manner in which it was written, which is especially helpful in descriptions of the military manoevers that were conducted throughout the Gallipoli campaign. Historians already familiar with the basics of the campaign and looking for more in-depth discussion would likely be better served by Laffin's Damn the Dardanelles or the Gallipoli volumes of C.E.W. Bean's vast, official history, The Story of ANZAC.
That said, Haythornthwaite provides an excellent, well-written overview of the Gallipoli campaign, discussing both what happened and why things went so wrong. The color plates are particularly helpful in discerning the strategy behind various troop movements, and the book's bibliography would likely prove very useful for those inclined to use this work as a starting point for further research. Overall, a valuable resource for anyone interested in investigating the fight for Gallipoli.
Little news in Gallipoli 1915.......2000-12-18
Those who have read Alan Mooreheads brilliant book on the battle of Gallipoli will find little extra in Haythornthwaite's book.A few coloured plates is not enough to buy this book.
A victory for Mustafa Kemal, actually.......2000-06-22
Almost everything mentioned within this book have been noted somewhere else. Haythornthwaite did a good job of putting it altogether and made our life easier to read it in one piece.
Above else it shows that Mustafa Kemal, loved by some and hated by others, actually gain the most out of this disasterous ANZAC's campaign. He ascended to power only to liquidize the 'last'/'only' Khilafah that the Muslim had by 1924. You'll be amazed and wondered whether the whole thing was a 'setup' to break the Ottoman Devlet from the inside.
In the end the Ottoman lost the whole war by alligning to the wrong side (Central Powers) in that pitiful World War I.
a perceptive view into Australaisias militarys' darkest hour.......2000-04-12
this book provides an insightful look into both the factual and the causal history of the galipoli campaign. Whether you are curious about the campaign from seeing the movie or are just curious about one of the most hopelessly galant and dramatic fights ofthe first world war, you are sure to love it. This book is also a valuable aide in understanding Australia's miliary foreign policy as it's reprucussions are felt, in spirit more than in a genuine resentment of Great Britain, still today
Book Description
A Prelude to Gallipoli reflects upon a unique period of global military conflicts stretching all the way from the shores of Gallipoli peninsula in the European part of the Ottoman Empire to a small town in the Australian desert. This fictionalized historical novel presents a challenging and thought-provoking story that is based on a restructured and revised slice of history. It intriguingly reinterprets a bloody political incident that occurred in 1915 in a small desert town in Australia from a viewpoint that touches upon some of the historical precedents of the ongoing global terrorism and its relevancy to the state-sponsored terrorism of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

banned in Australia?.......2006-12-03
Omer Ertur has done as an excellent job of recreating the central characters in this drama that directly led to the tragedy of Gallipoli a short time later.
Why would two Afghans, in the middle of Australia, don uniforms with a Turkish flag and kill their innocent neighbors on a picnic train? This unlikely incident prompted a formerly reluctant Australia to offer the flower of her youth to the disposal of the British Empire as cannon fodder. Targeted in the attack were a union leader and minister which brought the support of the unions and Church behind the war effort. The two Afghans were immediately killed and buried without a trace. Along with the government's success in bringing their country into the war, the BHP mining company erased its labor problems and inquest into selling their products to the Germans. The yellow journalism of the day did the rest without any inquest into the many unanswered questions. This book could not be published in Australia, but I am glad I live in a country that allows the freedom to look at all angles and interests.
Ertur's research into the incident creates a plausible scenario that fills in many blanks along with character development that evokes interest and readability.
Thanks for an interesting book and good read!
Book Description
It is the perceived wisdom that the Gallipoli Campaign against the Turks in 1915 was deeply flawed and that inadequate planning and bad maps contributed to much unnecessary slaughter.
Yet these two experts on terrain and mapping in the Great War contend that the consequences of this have been overplayed and by considering the evidence - both in little-used archives and studies of actual terrain features - they present the truth; that adequate intelligence was available in various forms but was either ignored or not correctly collated or distributed.

Book Description
The passage of time has not slowed the production of books and articles about World War I. This volume provides a guide to the historiography and bibliography of the Dardanelles Campaign, including the Gallipoli invasion. It focuses on military history but also provides information on political histories that give significant attention to the handling of the Dardanelles Campaign. The opening section of the book provides background information about the campaign, discusses the major sources of information, and lays out the major interpretative disputes. A comprehensive annotated bibliography follows. This book nicely complements the two earlier volumes on World War I battles--The Battle of Jutland by Eugene Rasor and The Battles of the Somme by Fred R. van Hartesveldt.
Book Description
In 1972, a team of academics and archivists from the Imperial War Museum set about the momentous task of tracing ordinary men and women who lived through one of the most harrowing periods in modern history, the First World War.
Veterans from Britain, Germany, America and Australia were interviewed in detail about their day-to-day experiences on and off the front. It has since grown to be the most important archive of its kind in the world.
These audiobooks contain just a sample of these voices -- some of which have rested unheard for more than 30 years -- the forgotten voices of a generation no longer with us.
From the Compact Disc edition.

Stuck in the Greatest Idiocy Ever.......2006-09-04
These are first hand accounts of men and women that lived through the first world war. It is all there--loyalty to your fellow soldiers, cowardice, indifferent heroism, terror, and the feeling of apartheid from home and family. The most striking rememberances I took from the book were the white feather incidents--where white feathers were given to soldiers out of uniform on leave in England by young women as a goad to get to the trenches.
personal reading milestone.......2005-11-24
This is the first book I've ever read in one day; 'I rest my case'.
My most lingering memory is the story of the soldier who was shot for 'losing his way' and not showing up for a battle. When offered brandy by the narrator before meeting his maker, he said he'd 'never drunk spirits and wasn't going to start now'. Not such a coward, after all.
Fascinating wartime experiences by those who fought it.......2004-07-11
This book is full of fascinating wartime anecdotes given by the soldiers fighting it and the citizens involved in it. The staff of the UK's Imperial War Museum sifted through mountains of archives and picked out the very best to use in the book. Through the use of their own personal letters/interviews, the book follows the history of particular, mostly British, individuals during the war. It loosely follows the major battles of the Western Front and Gallipoli and even the Home Front.
Most of the letters vary in length between one paragraph and one page and are packed with the kind of realistic details that typical narrative histories of the World War I skip over. For example, in Gallipoli (p. 118) one soldier writes, "One of the biggest curses was flies. Millions and millions of flies. ... Immediately you bared any part of your body you were smothered." Short of actually being there, these kind of first person participant narratives deliver the essence of the war - harsh, demanding, brutal, comedic, and ocassionally surreal. The straightforward writing styles and unusual content make this book a true pleasure to read.
I have read over 40 books about the Great War, and this book is one of the best for personal narratives about the war. It's multi-person perspective delivers a well-balanced, insightful picture of the war at ground level (free of any hidden agenda). This book would perfectly complement a broad narrative history of World War I.
A Great Read & Excellent History.......2002-12-23
Max Arthur's new book covering the Great War is quite unique in that its content is nearly all first-hand accounts from people who experienced the horror of the Great War. The author has utilized a number of tape recorded interviews conducted by the Imperial War Museum in 1972. Many of the tapes from the Imperial War Museum Sound Archive had been forgotten and left unheard for years.
Now Max Arthur has put together many of these unheard voices from the Great War to produce this spellbinding and captivating book. I must admit that I was reluctant to buy this book as I was worried that a book full of short accounts would be too disjointed and really not detailed enough to satisfy my interest. I can honestly say that I truly enjoyed reading this book.
Each chapter of the book was a year of the Great War and was commenced by an introduction by the author offering a brief run down on the major events of that year. Then we heard from the men and women who participated in these events, from both sides of no-man's land. The author has concentrated mainly on the Western Front and Gallipoli and has tried to run the oral segments in chronological order.
I was really taken by these segments and I found it hard to stop reading. The accounts from these soldiers and civilians alike were at times humorous, strikingly direct, horrifying and on many occasions quite sad. I was really taken in by these accounts and I don't think that any World War One library would be complete without this title sitting on the shelf. I can honestly say that I learnt quite a few things from this book and I would place it along side such works offered by Lyn MacDonald. Well done to the author and the Imperial War Museum for allowing these veterans, many now long dead, the last word on their experiences in the Great War. This is a great book, you won't be disappointed.
Customer Reviews:
Exceptionally Good.......2005-12-22
Contradicting to some of the better known thesis especially on the Suvla offensive. Involving the Turkish side of the history is an effort that deserves special recognition, however it is not surprising to see that the Turkish side is not covered in depth due to limited resources
Gallipoli 1915 by Tim Travers.......2005-10-01
Exceptionally well researched and written, Gallipoli - 1915 sheds new light on what is arguably one of the most fascinating campaign of World War One. Drawing on multiple sources, many heretofore unavailable, unknown or simply ignored, Tim Travers demonstrates a remarkable understanding of the inner workings of History and offers the reader a monumental picture of a 20th Century equivalent of the Siege of Troy. Only in this case, the Trojans win the day.
Very thorough.......2005-02-14
This book provides a very thorough and technical analysis of the Gallipoli camapiagn or Canakkale as it is called in Turkey. The book has more information from the Turkish/Ottoman point of view compared to previous books I have read on this campaign, but nevertheless, I would have liked to have seen more. The book goes into extreme detail when examining the causes of the failure of the Allied forces to achieve their objectives, much more detail than I have seen in other books, and the section of photographs, particularly with reference to the Ottoman forces was quite good. The only downside of this book is that it is at times a little bit too techinical and detailed. For those who have never read about Gallipoli before, I would recommend that you read Alan Moorehead's "Gallipoli" first, as you will get a nice overview of the campaign from this book, and then you would be ready for Mr. Travers more detailed analysis.
Book Description
The Gallipoli Campaign stands out as a landmark in the history of the First World War, and it was perhaps the most controversial action of that war; it certainly ended in tragedy. The author, Joseph Murray, was among the 400,000 British and Empire troops taking part; he served as a naval rating turned soldier in the Hood Battalion of the Royal Naval Division. This book is based on a diary he kept at the time and his later letters home.
The battle was a war of nerves, largely played out underground in the tunnels constantly being built by either side. This is a thoroughly riveting and detailed account of that important but tragic operation.
