Life's little handbook.......2006-07-06
This is the nearest "how to navigate and succeed" guide I can find. Too bad we're not born with a self-help how to live life booklet, but Jim Rohn has complied a book of quotes that will help anyone at anytime. I bought one for my son and daughter and assured them that if they seriously studied this book, they would be better prepared to handle what life will throw at them. I recommend this book to any serious student of life, especially his/her own.
A Gem!!.......2002-01-13
I stumbed on this book after purchasing the Weekend Seminar by Jim Rohn on CD ROM. I had heard of Jim from other speakers like Tony Robbins but until now hadn't bothered to listen to any of his material. I found that his CD was just chock full of material and purchased this book as an abbreviated reference to many of his quotes.
Jim is more focussed on the business and financial aspect of self help -- although his advice does cross into different areas.
Highly recommended reading -- and you might also want to check out the Weekend Seminar CD set as well.
Great!!!!.......1999-09-29
I have been a Jim Rohn fan for over 20 years. His wisdom is priceless. I am a Real Estate broker and a Toastmaster. These quotes supply me with very good speaking material. The motivation and practical wisdom I receive from Jim Rohn keeps me headed in the right direction in my business. If you never have read or heard Jim Rohn, you owe it to yourself to invest in his books and tapes.

Book Description
Wouldn't you look forward to spending a few minutes with St. Thérèse of Lisieux, the best known and loved of all modern saints throughout the world? The life and message of this great saint and Doctor of the Church has blessed millions of Catholics around the globe. Her simple, direct, and sure way to holiness has helped many gain a better understanding of the spiritual life and a deeper union with Christ. This book has been designed to bring the inspiration of her words to you in a format that is as simple and direct as her own "little way".
This deluxe book contains a collection of hundreds of direct quotes and short sayings of Thérèse, carefully arranged by the major virtues of the Christian life. The quotes are arranged and classified by the virtues represented in the classic 15 decade Rosary. The Rosary mysteries provide us a mosaic of virtues for the spiritual life, a ladder for advancing in holiness and in the love of God.

QUOTES FROM A GREAT SAINT.......2007-01-09
This hardcover, very thin, little book has a nice organizational plan. The wonderful and inspiring quotes from the writings of St. Thérèse of Lisieux are arranged according to the Virtues of the Holy Rosary and other spiritual virtues: Prayer, The Eucharist, The Church, The Bible, and The Saints. The quotations are taken from three sources, including The Story of a Soul: The Autobiography of Saint Thérèse edited by Mother Agnes of Jesus translated by Michael Day. This is a highly edited version of the original text, not the standard Clark translation preferred today. The biographical introduction to this tiny book has some surprising inaccuracies, and the frontispiece drawing doesn't resemble St. Thérèse at all.
A Guide to Love.......2004-02-21
I truly enjoy this book. In the introduction McClernon writes: "Taking time apart from busy lifestyles to spend a few minutes with a saint promises precisely the kind of nourishment . . souls need." From the back cover: "Arranged according to the mysteries of the Rosary and their companion virtues, this treasury of quotes from St. Therese of Lisieux offers inexhaustible wisdom, clarity, simlicity, hope, trust - above all, it incarnates the Love that lights the path of the 'Little Way' to Paradise." Simply this book has brought me closer to God, through St. Therese, by helping me to meditate through the rosary. At different times during the day I pray my way through a decade from which I emerge refreshed and conscious of the Lord's presence. The third Sorrowful Mystery, the crowning with thorns, for example, has about 30 quotes from Therese focusing on the virtue of courage - such as: "I am not going to worry, but I will always stretch out my suppliant arms towards You with great love. I cannot believe that You would abandon me", and "Let us struggle without respite. Let us go on, however much tired of the struggle. Where would our merit be if we fought only when we feel courageous?" I feel as though I am receiving spiritual guidance from Therese when I read these quotes and meditate on them, and the mystery, as I say a Hail Mary. The virtues help me integrate the mystery with my life giving me encouragement, direction and inspiration in my daily struggle to be part of the world but not of it. McClernon has also come out with a second volume that follows the same pattern with quotes from St. Francis De Sales which is also excellent. For some reason the second volume does not appear on Amazon yet but in the meantime you can find it the on publisher's site, www.ignatius.com, or at a Daughters of St. Paul bookstore. I sum, thank you Ignatius and Mr. McClernon and please keep these volumes coming!

An anthology of the profound wit and wisdom of women througout the ages; a "must read" for all women and a "should read" for all men who want to 'be in the know' about all women! A "5 star" book!!!!! A neat little book to set on your nightstand, coffee table, or reference shelf 444 Surprising Quotes About Jesus is alive with interesting and devotional material. Divided into nine sections, the quotes look at many facets of our Lord. Between Phillips Brooks "Jesus Christ, the condescension of divinity, and the exaltation of humanity." (9) to A. W. Tozer's "Promoting self under the guise of promoting Christ is currently so common as to excite little notice." (177) you'll bathe your mind in 208 pages of confronting excerpts. To make this book easier to use, the compiler has closed with a Guide to Themes, an Index of Sources, and a bibliography.
Just to whet your interest, here are a few more quotes. Mother Teresa, "Many people mistake our work for our vocation. Our vocation is the love of Jesus." (56) Antony of Padua, "Christ is the dazzling bright sun who covered himself with a cloud in order to be seen." (125) St. Augustine, "Christ is the best husband." (128) Harvey Cox,"There has never been a better raconteur than Jesus of Nazareth." (137) Joni Eareckson Tada, "No other religion or philosophy promises glorified bodies, hearts and minds. Only in the Gospel of Jesus Christ do hurting people find such incredible hope." (165) There are a myriad sources, including: George MacDonald, Eleanor Roosevelt, Luis Palau, Ulrich Zwingli, Calvin Miller, Christina Rossetti, and Paul Bunyon.

A man who was completely innocent offered himself as a sacrifice for the good of others, including his enemies, and became the ransom of the world. It was a perfect act. Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) Indian Statesman and Pacifist
My favorite is: To be like Christ is to be a Christian. William Penn (1644-1718) English Quaker and founder of Pennsylvania.
Armchair Interviews says: This book is rich with wonderful thoughts. Those thoughts will give you food for thought and feed you at the same time.

My funny bone hurts.......2002-10-23
There is no doubt that humans are the funniest animals on the planet, and appropos of the medical theme of this humorous book, I thought I would make one comment in that vein.
Yes, we humans are pretty funny creatures, but what would you expect of a mammal that actually has a "funny bone?" I'm referring to the upper-arm bone, which is actually named the "humerus." Well, it's actually spelled a little differently, but only by a couple of letters, and that's probably because anatomists didn't usually win first place in their spelling bees in school.
Well, I don't know if the hip bone is connected to the thigh bone myself, but I did learn how to spell way back when. Anyway, this book is sure to tickle the humerus or funny bone in all of us, and it just goes to show you that although seriousness may be only skin-deep, funny is truly to the bone.
The true medicine is humour.......2001-09-14
As a medical student I really enjoyed reading this book. I've read other books and articles of Bennet, and enjoy his humorous way of putting things. Asa foreigner I had a few difficulties enjoying all of the jokes related to US health services. However, all in all I found the book worthwhile reading, and I had some really big laughs that cramped my stomach. I am sure I am going to read and reread this book in the future.....after all, good humour and hilarious jokes are the best medicine ever invented, and there are no sideeffects!!!
This book is a gem!.......2001-03-02
This is one of the funniest books I've ever read. Dr. Bennett did a terrific job pulling together both classic and original quotes about doctors and medicine. Enjoy the material when you have some free time during the day or comb through the collection looking for amusing lines to use on rounds, lectures, or other medical situations. Best of all, buy the book for your medical friends or anyone who enjoys funny and insightful lines about doctors, medicine, and health.
Praise for The Doctor's Book of Humorous Quotations.......2001-02-25
The following reviews were sent in about my new book:
The practice of medicine is a serious affair. Dr. Bennett's new book is a lighthearted counterweight to our daily effort, allowing us to chuckle at ourselves, our colleagues, our profession and all of those who interact with it. The book is also a good source for that fitting joke or quip you might need for a lecture, a toast or a presentation. Open to any page for a few moments of zany entertainment. It makes a perfect gift for yourself, a friend or as a "thank you" to a colleague. Alan Stone, MD, Clinical Professor of Medicine, The George Washington University Medical Center.
This is the funniest book I've read in a long time. It's loaded with anecdotes, definitions, jokes and quotations about doctors and medicine. Almost no medically related subject is left out. Even in you think you don't have time to read (who does?) find some time for this relaxing and enjoyable book. Howard Fischer, MD, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Wayne State University School of Medicine.
Humor and laughter in medicine are needed now more than ever before because of the increasing stresses of modern medical practice. This gem of a book compiled by Dr. Bennett, himself a noted humorist, includes a great variety of quips, quotes, and jokes that can serve as a lifeline to sanity for stressed-out physicians whether in practice or still in their training years. Much of the material in this book is both funny and original and can be used to liven up ward rounds, medical lectures, and yes, even the sacred physician-patient relationship. It should be relished but should also be shared. Lugwig A. Lettau, Charleston, SC.

Life's pocket-reference!.......2004-08-10
Given to me by a trusted friend, this booklet has changed even the little things in my life. Put it anyplace where you'll reach for it when you're waiting for anything... a meeting to start, to catch the bus home, or standing in a line someplace (think: airport).
Nobody masters the human language like Jim Rohn. A 3-line nugget from this book will give you just enough food-for-thought to have you ruminating on it all-day long. Keep your mind sharp: Get your daily dose of Jim Rohn's mental-multivitamins!
Jim Rohn - master motivator..........2000-03-24
Jim Rohn, corporate America's Chairman of the Board, has distilled his life-wisdom into a book called "The Treasury of Quotes." From the book comes the concentrated elixar that is "Excerpts." While there are hundreds of books of quotes, this is THE booklet to keep in your pocket, briefcase, car, and anywhere else you can get to quickly when you need to be encouraged and motivated. I've given away dozens of these as gifts, and have been thanked over and over...
Book Description
A collection of prayers spanning lives from Job to Jim Elliott--including kings and captives, scholars and children. Arranged topically.
Customer Reviews:
An Exceptional work.......2003-12-23
There are many prayer treasuries but this work stands out in several areas. First, it offers some intriguing categories such as: Prayers in Crisis,Prayers of Questioning, Prayers for Children, Prayers of and for Love and Kindness, etc. Second, this book contains many prayers of both children and adolescents and few similar books seem to consider young people's prayers important enough to include. Third, the children's prayers especially, are characterized by poignancy, humor, power, and honest emotion. Fourth, the editor includes information about many prayer authors and,in some cases, he even researched the occasion or crisis that sparked the prayer. This is an excellent, powerful, and moving volume. It should be on anyone's shelf who cares about God and how people relate to Him.
Book Description
Dirty Little Secrets of the Vietnam War allows us to see what really happened to American forces in Southeast Asia, separating popular myth from explosive reality in a clear, concise manner. Containing more than two hundred examinations of different aspects of the war, the book questions why the American military ignored the lessons taught by previous encounters with insurgency forces; probes the use of group think and mind control by the North Vietnamese; and explores the role technology played in shaping the way the war was fought. Of course, the book also reveals the "dirty little secrets," the truth behind such aspects of the conflict as the rise of the Montagnard mercenaries-the most feared group of soldiers participating in the secret war in Laos-and the details of the hidden struggle for the Ho Chi Minh Trail. With its unique and perceptive examination of the conflict, Dirty Little Secrets of the Vietnam War offers a critical addition to the library of Vietnam War history.
Customer Reviews:
Incomplete information.......2007-08-30
I bought the book in hopes it would add to the research material that I have collected to study my father's service in Vietnam. He was a Marine helicopter door gunner and flew hundreds of missions in a CH-46 Sea Knight. This book gives what appears at first glance to be a comprehensive chapter on the air war but makes no mention of the CH-46 helicopter. This is an unfortunate dissapointment because the CH-46 played such an important role for the Marine's in I Corps. The Marines used the Sea Knight in similar roles as the Army utilized the Huey Slick (resupply, medevac, troop & recon inserts/extracts, etc) and there were many squadrons throughout I Corps from 66-71. Obviously the author felt it unnecessary to include Marine Helicopters yet included stats on three different models of the Chinook CH-47. This omission makes this whole book suspect in my view for it is likely there are many others.
Comments on "people sniffer" are totally bogus.......2007-03-15
I was there and I did that and he is techinally and tactically completely incorrect. Not even close. Didn't read any more of the book (online), but based on that intimate assessment, don't believe anything he writes.
A entertianing, fact-filled overview of the Vietnam War.......2005-04-30
The title of this 375-page book about the Vietnam War is not accurate. There really aren't too many so-called dirty little secrets revealed and most of the material is not controversial, but the book does have a lot of interesting perspectives and factual data re the war. Eschewing the chronological approach Dunnigan and Nofi write a lot of short interesting chapters on everything from a sketch of the pre-U.S. involvement history of conflict in Vietnam and adjoining nations (which still continues as the growing ethnic Vietnamese population continues suppressing and displacing minority groups) to summaries of each aspect of combat (Army, USMC, helicopters, air war, Naval campaigns (perhaps the weakest section), etc.), descriptions of major actions and incidents and overviews of in-country "cultural" issues (drugs, racial relations, popular music, etc.).
One hallmark is lots of statistics on various topics (casualties, military demographics, air craft, weapons used, etc.). Most of these are from official sources and source references - increasing lacking in much today's politicized nonfiction - are provided. Some of the statistics are explained and provide illustrative insights but unfortunately some of the intriguing data are not well explained.
For instance, there's a general impression that surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) were the overwhelming danger to U.S. aircraft and air-to-air combat was a significant aspect of the war. But the authors present statistics which show that only 11% of aircraft lost in combat were lost to SAMs, 4% were lost in air-to-air combat while the remaining 76% were lost to anti-aircraft artillery and various conventional ground-based weapons fire. However, the authors don't clarify that many, if not most, of aircraft losses occurred over South Vietnam where SAMs and MIGs were not available to our adversaries. The 25% rate of US Navy loss to SAMs and MIGs compared with only 12% for USAF/USMC presumably reflects that the Navy operated relatively more over North Vietnam itself from Tonkin Gulf-based carriers while the USAF/USMC operated a larger percentage pf their fixed wing aircraft over the South.
Another fascinating tidbit are the statistics about deserters who accepted amnesty in the mid-1970s - many of whom had gone to Canada - showing they were disproportionately (86%) in the lowest two classifications out of four military intelligence test classifications.
A suggested reading list, multi-page glossary and extensive indexing give what is basically an entertaining read for military history buffs who are not expert on Vietnam a bit of extra value as a reference for further study.
Recommended for Vietnam War, Cold War and general military history buffs and is an excellent book about the Vietnam-era for people not even born before the war ended.
Reviewed on the 30th anniversary of the fall of Saigon. On April 29, 1975, Radio Saigon began playing Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" (an interesting fact NOT mentioned in this book) as a signal to begin Operation Frequent Wind, the evacuation of all American personnel from South Vietnam.
FORGET THE TITLE... IT'S MARKETING FOLKS.........2004-03-28
OK, SO THE TITLE IS A MISNONER..
AS A HISTORY LOVER, (44 years ) I CAN HONESTLY SAY THAT THIS IS A MUST READ FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO WANT TO KNOW THE INTER WORKINGS OF BEING AT WAR IN VIETNAM.
THIS IS NOT A BOOK YOU BREEZE THROUGH IN A COUPLE HOURS.
I FOUND MYSELF STOPPING, DIGESTING INFORMATION, SORTING OUT WHAT I HAD THOUGHT WAS FACT AND EVALUATING THE AUTHORS COMMENTS.
SO WHERE IS IT WRITTEN THAT EVERYTHING IN A NON-FICTION BOOK IS 100% CORRECT?
MISTAKES ARE MADE AND OF COURSE THE AUTHORS PERCEPTIONS OF " FACTS " POP UP IN HIS WRITINGS.
THAT IS EXACTLY WHY ONE MUST READ THE SUBJECT MATERIAL
BY OTHER WRITERS.
THIS BOOK OFFERS A GOOD QUICK INDEX TO GO BACK AND RE-READ THOSE AREAS THAT INTEREST YOU MOST.
THIS BOOK IS JAM FULL OF MILITARY INFO THAT MOST US REALLY ENJOY KNOWING ABOUT.
GO BUY IT AND I THINK MOST OF YOU WILL AGREE WITH ME.. THIS IS GOOD STUFF.
Title is misnomer.......2004-02-29
The title is a misnomer. Virtually everything is covered in other books on Vietnam. I suspect that the reviewers who praised this book on the basis of it containing hitherto unrevealed information simply have not read anything else on the subject. It does give a pretty good, if somewhat superficial overview of the war as well as the background history leading up to it. I would recommend it except for the pervasive (but not overwhelming) right wing cant. For example, the authors state that one of the reasons the war was lost by the South was that the superpowers supporting the North had more will and staying power than those (actually, one, the U.S.) supporting the South. They neglect to mention that the Americans were fighting and dying there but Russians and Chinese were not. They also adhere to the pervasive, but very questionable premise that had we been allowed to bring our full military power to bear, we would have won. They do acknowlege that U.S. losses would have been much higher and the subsequent occupation would also have been very costly and prolonged. Still, there is much information conveniently collated here from many diverse sources and if one decided to read only a single book on Vietnam, one could do worse.
Book Description
Fearlessly taking aim at the seemingly impressive facade of modern military power, Dirty Little Secrets is an unusual, entertaining, and thought-provoking look at the myths, mysteries, arcana, and boondoggles unknown to the rest of us. Did you know that
- There are an estimated 40 million AK47 assault rifles in the world? (Page 25)
- The United States Air Force estimates that collisions between aircraft and birds, about two thousand a year, cost $100 million annually-and about twenty injured or dead airmen? (Page 136)
- As the ultimate defense against electronic warfare, the Swiss Army maintains twenty thousand carrier pigeons for combat service? (Page 243)
- The space shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986 crippled the U.S. intelligence satellite network between 1986 and 1990 and would have left the U.S. military almost blind in the event of a major conflict? (Page 245)
- Most helicopters on combat ships cannot be used more than twenty to forty hours a month? (Page 179)
- For over twenty years, the U.S. Navy has been successfully using sea lions, dolphins, and whales to guard its ships from enemy divers? (Page 195)
In addition to recounting everything from the merely trivial to the truly terrible, the authors help readers to look at the big picture, reminding us that ignorance is not bliss where the military is concerned.

The Ultimate trivia book for the armchair warrior.......2005-08-19
This book is chocked full of fascinating litle known facts outside of the services of all nations. It is well worth the effort to read this book and I think that it should be read by all serious folks interested in War.
A must for any armchair General or historian.......2002-08-15
Ignore the poor folks who misread the title; this is the real deal. Pages of the interesting, the obscure, and the downright arcane bits of military info, lore and technical data. A book no true military enthusiast should be without.
Wrong cover??.......2001-09-30
I bought this for my retired military husband...what a bummer. This book is nothing about secrets, but just a sortof "handbook" on already know, workings of the military. Not a big attention holder.
I wish i wasn't so naive.......2000-09-30
I bought this book, I will admit, actually expecting something good and amazing. I liked how to make war, and i have now learned the hard way not to buy a book just by the authors name. This is disappointing. Good authors like Stephen Coonts, Michael Crichton, and others, I am able to buy from in confidence, expecting a good read. How is a production delay due to a minor problem a 'dirty little secret?' Wow, I feel so dirty now that I know that!
Secrets still remain secret.......2000-04-13
Even though the title promises you insight into military information pertaining to World War II, it leaves you straining to find it with it's pages. Overall, the work is interesting and flows quite well, but the facts are not that eye opening and seem at times more trivial than informative.
The facts are laid out in an easy to follow format, most of which can be obtained through casual surfing on the net these days. However, if you are interested in a compilation of stories, trivia, and a few "secrets" then this is the book for you.
