Book Description

Called "a fantastic breakthrough into the dark content of female desire" (France-Soir), The Sexual Life of Catherine M. was the literary success of the year in France, selling over 300,000 copies and becoming the most controversial book on sexuality since The Story of O. Catherine Millet, the prominent editor of Art Press, has led an extraordinarily active and free sexual life -- from alfresco encounters in Italy to a gang bang on the edge of the Bois du Boulogne to a high-class orgy at a chichi Parisian restaurant. A graphic account of a life of physical gratification, the book is also a relentlessly honest look at the consequences of sex stripped of sentiment -- including the joys and sorrows of her open marriage -- and a completely fearless unmasking of the fallacies we cling to and the often shocking, sometimes disturbing truths of female sexuality. The French press was equally admiring and appalled by Millet's daring, but Le Nouvel Observateur certainly spoke for them all when it wrote, "Sex is this woman's continent, which she explores tirelessly. No one has ever described it like this." Now American audiences will have the opportunity to take home Catherine M. "This is the most explicit book about sex ever written by a woman." -- Edmund White "[Her] aloof, gracefully crystalline style is as elegant as any French pornography since Sade." -- Francine du Plessix Gray, Vogue "[A] stylistic tour de force recounting three decades of sexual exploits ... This book's pleasures are first and foremost literary." -- Saul Anton, Bookforum "[Millet] relates her sexual life without trembling, and allows us to share her pleasures." -- Daniel Bougnoux, Le Monde

3 out of 5 stars The Woman Who Could Not Say No.......2007-08-28

It's been more than a year since I quickly read this autobiography. Frankly I found it lacking. The author, if the picture on the book cover is actually the author, is beautiful. It's hard to imagine how reading about a movie star-beautiful woman having more sex than an entire Play Boy Mansion full of bunnies could quickly get boring. Naturally as a man, I'd like to meet this lovely bunny, because I've never really ever met a true nymphomaniac, but I'd probably be boring to her. Frankly, I feel that Catherine Millet is amazing lucky that she hasn't died of Aids. It's hard to imagine a woman going to one all-night party after another in either a strange home or out in the park and having sex all night with every man who happened to climb on top of her either from the front or rear. She apparently never bothered worrying about condoms and mentions only having some minor STD problems as a result of her screwing every strange man who stumbled upon her body in the dark. She even muses about whether some of the men she met during the daytime might have had sex with her during some of her all-night orgies where perhaps she had a hundred unprotected quickies. She usually didn't see the faces of her partners at these frequent gangbangs, but she was a willing receptacle for their sperm donations. Perhaps she found such musing about whom she'd actually slept with and whom she hadn't a pleasant break from her daytime art editing work routine? She had no idea unless one of the men happened to mentioned it to her. For a woman who is obviously very intelligent, knowledgeable and talented she certainly was stupid about having unprotected sex with thousands of unknown partners. She was also incredibly lucky because she survived to write a bestseller about her life as a serial, never-ending orgy groupie. God bless and protect her. She needs it. She is a truly kinky gift to all mankind.

1 out of 5 stars I hope she got more satisfaction than I did........2007-05-06

Finally, I thought, an honest, open book about the life of a female sexual libertine. I looked forward to learning about her motivations, her experiences, in a thoughtful, possibly linear fashion. Instead we are advised that Catherine first had sexual intercourse at 18. Within pages she is describing taking part in a gang bang (how many in a gang bang, 3, 5, 10) and spreading her legs for 20 and 30 men at a time. How, pray tell, does one go from a deflowering at 18 to 20 to 30 men in a row. And how long did it take to achieve this. And what was her thinking. You'll never know, and less than halfway through the book, you simply won't care. I finished this book but wish I hadn't. A complete waste of time and effort.

3 out of 5 stars I Love Sexy Books.......2007-03-30

This is a sexy book on one woman's sexual exploration. I enjoyed it. I am now reading Diary of a Sex Fiend: The Girl with a One Track Mind, which is in the same genre and very good. I recommend both.

4 out of 5 stars The story of M........2007-03-28

One wonders, if Catherine Millet's memoir is truly as bad as others suggest in their negative reviews below, why then did it sell over 300,000 copies when it was first published in France? Called "the most explicit book about sex ever written by a woman," and one of the most controversial books on sexuality since Pauline Réage's HISTOIRE D'O (Story of O), Millet's book is not for everyone. By day she worked as a French art critic and editor of Art Press, and by night she pursued her insatiable passion for indiscriminate sex with anonymous men. She candidly documents her sexual experiences in detached, graphic detail, from childhood masturbation to orgies and Parisian gang bangs as an adult.

In their haste to judge Millet rather unfairly, most reviewers below have overlooked the real point of Millet's memoir: her personal desire to explore the meaning of the erotic experience beyond utterly routine sex, while burning out all traces of Catholic guilt along the way. As in THE STORY OF O, Millet learns from her libertine experiences that sexuality allows us humans the unique opportunity for mutual exploration of roles, emotions and activities which would be difficult if not impossible to experience without a willing partner. On her journey of sexual liberation, she also discovers a thing or two about marriage, taboos, infidelity, jealousy, anonymity, and the importance of cultivating one's inner life. In a time when fundamentalist religions and patriarchal indoctrination persist in calling for female submission, Millet's account of sexual freedom is highly recommended. After all, 300,000 Frenchmen can't be wrong.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible! Don't waste you rtime with this trash.......2007-03-15

Quite simply the worst book I have ever picked up. It is boring, pathetic, dysfunctional and the list goes on and on. I can't comprehend the positive reviews, the writing is terrible, and there's not even a trace of eroticism.
The book should have been entitled Memoirs of an Unattractive Hole Stuffer. It really is that bad.
Makes me feel sorry for men and women that stoop that low. This is the dregs. Worse than sleazy.

          Book Description

"These are the boys of Pointe du Hoc. These are the men who took the cliffs. These are the champions who helped free a continent. These are the heroes who helped end a war." -Ronald Reagan, June 6, 1984, Normandy, France

Acclaimed historian and author of the "New York Times" bestselling Tour of Duty Douglas Brinkley tells the riveting account of the brave U.S. Army Rangers who stormed the coast of Normandy on D-Day and the President, forty years later, who paid them homage.

The importance of Pointe du Hoc to Allied planners like General Dwight Eisenhower cannot be overstated. The heavy U.S. and British warships poised in the English Channel had eighteen targets on their bombardment list for D-Day morning. The 100-foot promontory known as Pointe du Hoc -- where six big German guns were ensconced -- was number one. General Omar Bradley, in fact, called knocking out the Nazi defenses at the Pointe the toughest of any task assigned on June 6, 1944. Under the bulldoggish command of Colonel James E. Rudder of Texas, who is profiled here, these elite forces "Rudder's Rangers" -- took control of the fortified cliff. The liberation of Europe was under way.

Based upon recently released documents from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, the Eisenhower Center, Texas A & M University, and the U.S. Army Military History Institute. The Boys of Pointe du Hoc is the first in-depth, anecdotal remembrance of these fearless Army Rangers. With brilliant deftness, Brinkley moves between two events four decades apart to tell the dual story of the making of Reagan's two uplifting 1984 speeches, considered by many to be among the best orations the Great Communicator ever gave, and the actual heroic event, which was indelibly captured as well in the opening scenes of Steven Spielberg's "Saving Private Ryan".

Just as compellingly, Brinkley tells the story of how Lisa Zanatta Henn, the daughter of a D-Day veteran, forged a special friendship with President Reagan that changed public perceptions of World War II veterans forever. Two White House speechwriters -- Peggy Noonan and Tony Dolan -- emerge in the narrative as the master scribes whose ethereal prose helped Reagan become the spokesperson for the entire World War II generation.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Reagan re-disovers the Greatest Generation.......2007-10-11

Douglas Brinkley has written two books in one and both are wonderful.

The first is the inside story of Ronald Reagan's magnificent speech on the cliffs of Normandy in 1984. It was perfect political "theater" that ushered in a glowing fondness for the heroics of the WW2 effort by our "boys." Soon Americans were reading The Greatest Generation, seeing Saving Private Ryan, building a WW2 Memorial in Washington, asking uncles and fathers about their service, and now watching The War.

But Brinkley also weaved in the actual heriocs of the US Army Rangers, under James Rudder, who scaled those cliffs and "helped free a continent."

          Great history. Easy read.

"We stand on a lonely windswept point..."

1 out of 5 stars Myth not History.......2006-06-29

Myths are important, but they should not be labeled history. 1. George Washington was not a great guerilla leader; he commanded conventional forces who fought in lines--just like the redcoats. Washington thought militia and irregulars were undisciplined and unable to face regular troops.
          2. Ronald Reagan did not begin the nuclear "disarming" of the Soviet Union. Eisenhower and Kennedy tried, but (LBJ?) Nixon and Carter were able to bring the ABM treaty, the SALT treaties and he START treaties to a point where both sides began cutting back their nuclear arsenals. Reagan did have success with theater wrapons in Europe, but the "big nukes" that could end civilization were already being cut back.

This is an interesting book about Reagan and Peggy Noonan, but some of the history cited is WRONG.

          5 out of 5 stars Great Communicator.......2006-06-14

I bought this book because I love Ronald Reagan and wanted to know more about these great speeches. This book provides all of the insights, including both of his D-Day speeches in the appendix section. It's interesting to hear how Peggy Noonan put the Pointe du Hoc speech together and the back and forth editing that goes on with presidential speeches. I was most impressed by how the story of Peter Zannata got into the speech. I always wondered how this happened and this book provides the information. It's not a history book about D-Day but focuses on how Ronald Reagan helped to create new interest in today's younger generation in the greatest generation--our WWII heroes. It's very easy to read, too. A very good book.

2 out of 5 stars This book is mistitled.......2006-01-09

The title of this book should actually be "Speech making by Ronald Reagan" because only about 1/4 of the book deals with the battle for Pointe du Hoc. Most of the book champions the speechmaking ability of the former president. The battle description that it does have is pretty dry and lifeless.

5 out of 5 stars Perplexing War Mystery.......2006-01-02

Whether or not it was a silly idea for Brinkley to try to yoke together such disparate events over such a long period of time I leave for others to say. At first I thought it facile, but his writing is so good that I was almost persuaded. But no one can doubt that there is some really interesting material in here.

I never knew, for example, that Peggy Noonan had never even met Reagan, not even to shake his hand, when she began to write his speeches for him. She testifies that she was aware of a feeling in the corridors of the west wing, a feeling of resentment that she, a woman, should have been entrusted with such a potentially important speech.

Brinkley's most controversial thrust remains the finger of J'Accuse he drags in the direction of the late Cornelius Ryan, crack reporter and author of the D-Day classic THE LONGEST DAY. Brinkley accuses Ryan of "botching" the story Reagan and Noonan honed in on, the story of Rudder's Rangers, the men who scaled the cliffs of Pointe de Hoc and somehow found the Nazi's guns, jamming some of them up with plastic explosive, thus disabling the enemy fire for good and supposedly saving thousands of American lives. Ryan, alleges Brinkley, didn't go far enough in his reportage, assuming stupidly that just because the guns were missing from the cliff casemates, they weren't ever an important dangger in the rest of the battle. Well, think about it, Ryan!

Maybe I'm dumb, but does Brinkley ever explain why the Germans actually removed the guns from the casemates and rolled them ll that distance away to sit in the cornfield while they conferred and smoked (thus giving the Rangers time to destroy their workings)? It's one of those mysteries which probably has a simple explanation, but until I know it, i'm going to think that the German officers had an Allied double agent in their midst, hauling the guns out of the place where they might have, indeed probably almost certainly, done some good.

In one of the remarkable stories of D-Day, the task of liberating a small but significant German stronghold-Pointe du Hoc-fell to 225 brave souls from the 2nd Ranger Battalion. Led by Lt. Col. James Rudder, the men scaled the 100 foot cliff and fought their way into history.

Volunteers for "the most dangerous mission of that day", they were asked to overcome natural barriers, destroy six huge 155mm guns, cut German communications, set up roadblocks, and hinder enemy reinforcements from reaching the beach areas. The suppression of the guns would literally make a life or death difference to the U.S. troops landing on Omaha and Utah Beaches. After two days of fighting, only 90 of the battalion were left to tell their story.

Most histories of D-Day include the exploits of the 2nd Rangers lead by their thrice-wounded CO, Lt. Col. James Rudder and their taking of Pointe Du Hoc. The daring heroics involving their scrambling up 100' cliffs on ropes and ladders while under small arms fire is the stuff of legends. On those cliffs the Germans had placed six 155mm guns which could rain fire down upon both Omaha and Utah beach. Gen. Omar Bradley labeled the elimination of these guns by the 2nd Ranger "the most dangerous mission of D-Day". A book giving them a more detailed account and the recognition they deserve is most appropriate.

This account include the birth of the 2nd Rangers, their training, the plans for D-Day and most importantly, their story after their primary mission was accomplished. For the next two days and nights, scattered members of D, E and F companies were subjected to three determined German counterattacks. When the in-land hook-up finally did occur only 90 of the original 225 men were left to command.

The book moves so quickly, it can be read easily in less than a day. Maps are numerous and allow the reader to following the action without effort. Photos of the personnel and the terrain added a much-appreciated dynamic element. This is another book I wish I had read before visiting the Normandy beaches.

For their action on Pointe Du Hoc, the 2nd Ranger Infantry Battalion won a unit citation for "grim determination and extraordinary heroism".

          Book Description

Located to the west of Omaha Beach, the six 155mm cannon based at Pointe du Hoc, with their 25,000yd range, represented a major threat to the US forces scheduled to land on the beach. Regarded as impregnable from the sea, as a result of sheer cliffs, the battery was heavily defended on the landward side, with heavily concreted casements, tunnels and interlinked trenches. Manning the battery were some 125 infantry and some 85 artillerymen. Against this formidable target was sent three companies of Lt-Col James E. Rudder's 2d Ranger Battalion. Landed on the morning of 6 June 1944, Rudder's troops faced immense problems in seeking to ascend the supposedly impregnable cliffs but eventually succeeded in their objectives. However, with less than half his force still alive, Rudder faced determined German counterattacks and was not to be relived by other US forces until 8 June-two days later than scheduled.

Peter Howard provides a graphic account of the background to the raid, the men and equipment used, the tactics adopted and how the raid evolved.

Drawing upon contemporary source material, archival material and specially prepared artworks, the book provides a detailed analysis of the raid and its consequences.

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting and valuable source for a brave WWII attack.......2007-01-26

While this is a specialized book it contains enormous detail about one of the bravest episodes of the Second World War. The pictures, maps and descriptions of the training that the Rangers undertook and the innovations they used in scaling the tall cliffs, is spell-binding. My son has just completed a three monthe, Sixth Grade research paper on the subject and we have amassed many books on the topic. This is far and away the best. Thank you

I enjoyed this book very much. Before reading the book, I was only generally familiar with the Army Rangers discussed, and I did not realize the connection between them and with Ronald Reagan, the "Greatest Generation" and Peggy Noonan. I recommend the book highly. It is a quick, easy and very enjoyable, informative read.

This is a look into the World War II G.I.-his background, where he came from, just who he was. This is about the men America chooses to be our champions, to go fight, to attack the enemy at all costs, to free other nations from tyranny and bondage.
