A Must Have For Any Veterinary Medical Student.......2007-10-10
Immediately add this book to your list of college books, I guarantee you will be glad you did.
The Merck Veterianry Manual.......2007-08-23
As a medical professional, farm owner and provider of care for horses, dogs and cats, I have found this manual helpful. It provides clear information for the reader who has at least some knowledge of medical and veterianry vocabulary.
A copy of this important book should be on the shelf of every farm and livestock owner.
Handy Manual.......2007-02-11
If you have pets or livestock- then this book >may
< be quite handy. I have used it several times to help with ailments, drug use, etc however- this is NOT a book meant to replace your own veterinarian. Don't even think it will. People who graduate vet school are trained professionals, the rest of us on the farm might have practical experience- and that is just one small part of animal health.
I am happy with mine- having a medical background helps in reading this as it is not meant for the lay reader. Would I buy it again, yes. Would I recommend it to the farmer down the road? No.
Excellent Book.......2007-01-24
Being a veterinarian i would like to review all the material that i studied during my undergraduation. I thought Mercks would be the best to fulfill my interests and i found that the contents in the book are better than what i expected. I suggest this book to all the veterinarians across the world and i am sure this book will make u memorize alot of information which u may not get in any other book.

Veterinary Help for the Non-Veterinarian.......2006-08-18
This reference book is excellent for people with some knowledge
of medical care (I am a nurse). I always use the Merck Manual
for human info, but as a first-time dog owner who has a dog with
a few problems, I asked our vet if such a book existed for
veterinary issues. I was delighted when he told me that yes,
there is a Merck Veterinary Manual! The non-science minded
person might find the terminology daunting. The other book I
bought at the same time was
"The Five Minute Veterinary Consult", and I find that the two
books together give me all that I need in answers.
Product Description
What is the role of the veterinarian in a prosecution for cruelty to animals? This comprehensive introduction to the field is required reading for animal shelter, veterinary, investigative, and law enforcement professionals. In February 2007 Forensic Investigation of Animal Cruelty won the Dog Writers Association of America (DWAA) Best General Reference Book: 2006 category and was named Dogwise Best Book of 2006! In March 2007, coauthor Melinda Merck, D.V.M., was profiled in People magazine's "Animal CSI."
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book!.......2007-06-19
This book is straightforward and helpful. It covers many topics, including those easily overlooked such as the importance of good record keeping when performing investigations. All of the information is presented in a clear, concise format that is easy to read and understand. Dr. Leslie Sinclair is an excellent writer with years of experience in the field. The knowledge she shares in this book is invaluable! Definitely a must read for veterinarians and veterinary staff! Every clinic and shelter should have a copy on hand for reference.
A must have book for every veterinarian and veterinary technician.......2007-01-25
This book is long overdue for Veterinarians to take true to their oath and go beyond the call of duty in diagnosing, collecting and reporting evidence of abused and tortured animals they see in their hospitals.
Author Dr. Randall Lockwood has spent many years investigating the connection between animal cruelty and violence against human beings. I have read his books and heard him speak on these issues which has opened my eyes to a reality that is so deeply shocking. Even I, a certified veterinary technician, was so unaware how much my profession could contribute to the conviction and prosecution of these perpetrators, not just for the revolting behavior in harming defensless animals, but for statistically proven odds that the same perpetrators will go on to, or continue to harm human beings also. Every Veterinary clinic or hospital should have a copy of this book in their practice and not be afraid to use it as a bible to get involved in helping to make society a better place. You could not find better advice handed to you on a silver platter than the tools provided in this extremely well written CSI format of animal forensics!

Good reference but it's available on the web.......2005-12-10
This is a great general veterinary reference but you can access all of the information on the web. I'd rather access this information for free instead of adding another book on my bookshelf.
If only i could purchase MVM when I was student..........2003-10-04
Very useful book. Exposition language very easy. Altough my english isn't good, I understand and MVM help to me.
Invaluable if you know what you are talking about.......2003-04-28
This is a great book. If you already know alot, then you will be all set. I've only been an assistant for 2years, and reading this is difficult, if I didn't have a vet dictionary I would be lost. If you are well trained then I see this as a wonderful book to have, maybe invaluable.
Great referencing!.......2002-11-25
As a veterinary technician who graduated in '94 and is out of the clinics, but still works in Animal care, it is the best. I refer back to it all the time. I don't remember everything I was taught and especially being away from practices, it is perfect. It has EVERYTHING!! I carry it with me, it is like my bible! Nothing beats this either, I had other books that I have tried to refer to, but this is ideal as I stated it has everything.
Don't go to vet school without it!.......2002-09-28
The Merck Manual is a MUST HAVE for all vet students. It discusses most species and the common problems of each. It has an excellent appendix with all sorts of useful information including normal TPRs, conversion charts, and zoonoses, etc. While it does not go into great depth on pathophysiology, it is a perfect place to look up quick rule outs and basics. No matter what species or organ system we're studying, I use my Merck nearly every day.

Book Description
P. Roy Vagelos grew up during the Depression as a wise-cracking son of Greek immigrants. He left his family's small restaurant to become a doctor and went on to master three professions and become the Chief Executive Officer of the multinational pharmaceutical giant, Merck & Co. Medicine, Science, and Merck follows Vangelos' life from childhood to retirement, from his academic years at the University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University's Medical School, and Massachusetts General Hospital through his professional career at the National Institute of Health, Washington University, and Merck. Throughout, Vagelos never lost touch with his family values, his intense desire to help others, and his faith in the partnership principle and the competition that makes it work. P. Roy Vagelos and Louis Galambos offer an unusual perspective on working in three leading professions: medicine, science, and business. They take readers inside the laboratory and boardroom of one of America's large corporations, analyzing the mistakes and the innovations of Merck. P. Roy Vagelos, M.D. served as CEO of Merck & Co., Inc. from 1985 to 1994. Before assuming responsibilities in business leadership, he had won scientific recognition as an authority on lipids and enzymes and as a research manager. The author of more than 100 scientific papers, Vagelos has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences and the American Philosophical Society. Louis Galambos has written extensively on U.S. business-government relations, on economic aspects of modern institutional developments and on the rise of the bureaucratic state. A professor at Johns Hopkins University, Professor Galambos is the author of several books, including Anytime, Anywhere (Cambridge, 2002).
Customer Reviews:
A Good Read!.......2004-08-06
Roy Vagelos lived a rags-to-riches dream. He culminated his career as CEO of Merck, a giant company whose employees used to take lunch breaks at the store where he swept the floors as a boy. This is an inspiring tale, but not directly instructive. The author offers no tips for doctors, scientists or executives, nor does he address most of the current hot-button issues facing pharmaceutical companies. Vagelos simply, matter-of-factly presents the story of one man's life and achievements, without preaching or teaching. He does offer insights into scientific research (maybe too many, but this is his passion), into competitive hiring and into his management approach. His discussion of Merck's public health initiatives provides a much-needed counterpoint to the bad press the pharmaceutical industry has received in recent years. We suggest this book to those interested in Merck's history, in the pharmaceutical industry, in biochemistry or in a perfect example of an American immigrant's rise to success.
Why I enjoyed this book........2004-06-17
This book was referred to me by the CEO of a successful biotech company. I read it because P. Roy Vagelos, as CEO of Merck, had helped make Merck a great company - Merck won numerous awards during his tenure as CEO.
He also shows incredible leadership by taking a unconventional business model by donating Merck's Ivemec into perpetuity, to eradicate River Blindness in Africa. He was a recipient of the Franklin Institute's Bower Award for this achievement - other recipients include
William Rutter (Biotechnology/Chiron)
Robert Galvin (Quality/Motorola)
David Packard (Innovation/HP)
George Rathmann (Biotechnology/Amgen)
However, I enjoyed the book most because the book was about how, through hard work in three distinctly different careers, he had evolved into the person he is.
A must read for anyone in Pharma or an immigrant !
science as a career.......2004-06-16
This is both a personal and a scientific autobiography/biography, beautifully done. A good read, with the science and corporate life understandable to the nonscientific reader. An action-packed adventure of an individual, a close-knit Greek-American family, and the pursuit of science -- at NIH, in Paris, at Washington University, and at Merck. The book provides an invaluable window into the scientific process as a human undertaking, warts and all. Good for young people thinking about science and/or corporate careers, as well as adding a needed perspective to the history of science through its nuanced account of research within the pharmaceutical industry.
medical science in business/American dream.......2004-06-09
Don't listen to any reviewers who tell you that they were disappointed not to have more about Roy Vagelos' "inner life" or "emotional life." Vagelos has had two stories to tell - one about the growth and development of medical science in business and the other implicitly about the dream of the ethnic American realized - and these stories are social, national and intellectual rather than "personal" in nature. The most exciting aspect of the book for me comes when he makes the leap from science to management - the final two steps up at Merck. As a reader, I like the Roy Vagelos who keeps to his personal style (seeing people face to face, visiting them where they work, solving problems through individuals rather than concepts, etc.) and who is willing to admit the limitations of that style (though, happily, they are few). This creates a sense of trust and believability (I mean in the writer-reader relationship), which is turn keeps us turning pages in what is otherwise a modest book.

Book Description
Immediately after Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States of America, the nation began to experience extreme turmoil. From his election in November 1860 until his inauguration five months later, Lincoln was pushed, pulled, blamed and praised by all people from all sides as the country began its inevitable slide toward war. Southerners refused to see him as anything but a "Black Republican," an abolitionist poorly disguised as a moderate who was committed only to destroying their beloved slave system, and with it, their entire way of life. Northerners, meanwhile, pleaded with Lincoln to speak out and reassure the country that his election, and his policies, brought not separation, but harmony.
This engaging work utilizes, in addition to better known works, sources sometimes overlooked or under appreciated: newspaper accounts from across America (particularly from the cities Lincoln passed through on his journey to Washington), journals and diaries of his contemporaries, and correspondence. Lincoln's speeches also appear here as they did in newspapers in 1860 and 1861; crowd reactions and Lincoln's occasional banter with individuals who called out to him are faithfully reproduced, as well.
Customer Reviews:
Exploring a New Lincoln Area.......2005-05-13
Mr. Mansch's book focused on an area of Lincoln's life that heretofore, to my knowledge, had not been fully explored. Namely, the four month period between Lincoln's election and when he actually took office.
The country was in such turmoil and the outgoing president, James Buchanan, could not wait to leave the White House. He was the very definition of a "lame duck" president. To acquaint as many Americans as possible to himself, Lincoln took a long train trip from Springfield to Washington DC. Mr. Mansch's book covers every word of every speech he gave on the trip plus gives details of the many stops he and his family made. I thought it was a great book and I was sorry when it ended. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the Civil War, in Lincoln or is a "presidentphobe".
