Book Description
A long-awaited look at the unsung story of Lois Wilson, wife of the famously anonymous Bill W. Acclaimed author and screenwriter William G. Borchert does a masterful job in revealing the life and times of this spirited and determined woman, exploring the tender emotional territory beyond Loiss role in the formation of AA and the subsequent creation of Al-Anon. From her privileged childhood in turn-of-the-century New York City, to her unexpected but exhilarating courtship with the dashing Bill Wilson, to her socialite status as a "Wall Street Wife" in the Roaring Twenties, to the couples audacious cross-country motorcycle excursions in the 1930s, Lois was every bit the adventure-seeker her legendary husband was. But nothing could have prepared her for the chaos, pain, and loss caused by her beloved Bills seventeen-year descent into the depths of alcoholism. In the end, however, her husbands addiction proved not to be the tragic undoing of this brilliant, promising couple, but rather the beginning of one of the twentieth centurys most important social movements. Features a 16-page section of black-and-white archival photographs.

The Lois Wilson Story: When Love is not Enough
By: William G. Borchert
Hazelden
Center City, Minnesota 55012-0176
Lois Wilson was an amazing, wonderful woman and the world is a better place because she and her husband were in it. Author William G. Borchert used his words to express this woman's life, her trials, tribulations, and sanctification. Lois Wilson was the co-founder of the Al-Anon, and Alateen fellowships. Her husband Bill Wilson was one of the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous.
This amazing book about her life starts as a flash back. It begins with introducing you to a very unhappy Lois in the early 1930's. Then it shifts to her beginnings. The book takes your hand and walks you through the entire life of Lois Wilson, her family, and some of her friends. It gives you explicit details about her life, how AA came about, Bill, and Al-Anon.
Lois met her husband Bill, who was four years her junior, in Vermont. This would prove to be a love that stood the test of time and alcohol. They married in January, before he went of to fight in WWI. They had a beautiful wedding in her parent's house in Brooklyn, and they were married for fifty-three years.
Lois's life with Bill was full of ups and downs. He was in the Army, and then an investigator on Wall Street. Bill was a genius. He began his drinking days when he was overseas, and it continued as it was seen as acceptable in his profession. This later carried on into him becoming an alcoholic.
Lois was forced to be the breadwinner of the family as Bill's drinking got worse and cost them everything that they had. Through all the years that she went through with him having this horrible sickness, she began to change and harbor much resentment. To add to her pain she was unable to have children, and when they tried to adopt, a friend put a stop to it because of Bill's drinking. Later Mrs. Wilson came to realize that it was for the best that they did not have children, and she looked at all the alcoholics in AA as her dear children.
As Bill started to recover after many hard years of his illness, Lois was still hurting inside with deep resentment, and anger. Bill formed Alcoholics Anonymous with Dr. Bob Smith, in Akron, Ohio. He found that the only way for him to stay sober was to be with another drunk. This revelation only injured the already wounded heart of Lois even more. She had wanted to be the reason and the one that caused her husband to be sober and to stay that way.
As the fellowship of AA continued to grow, one day Lois went out on the porch and noticed that there were other wives just sitting in the cars that lined the street. She went out to the other women and invited them in. She had a revelation that there were others out there hurting just as badly as she from this horrible alcohol demon. Thus started her little kitchen group. As the years progressed, this kitchen group concept developed into what is now Al-Anon. They followed the same twelve steps that AA did, but they also had their own twelve steps to follow as well.
Once it was realized that the children were being left out Lois, and some of the volunteers who helped with Al-Anon decided that something needed to be done for them, thus the dawning of Alateen. It was headed by one of the original volunteers, and each group was set up to be fostered by an Al-Anon member. Lois took particular interest and joy over the group for the children.
Because of the will and determination of Bill and Lois wisdom, there is now what is called a "cure" for alcoholics, and their families. Alcoholism is a disease that effects all members of a family, co-workers, and even some people in the community. Monumental steps were made by these two amazing people, and none of it would have happened if Lois had not stayed by Bill's side.
This is a story about heartache, pain, stamina, faith, and above all love. God had both Lois and Bill Wilson here for a reason, and I believe that they fulfilled their calling. Mr. Borchert did a wonderful job of telling the story, and letting the reader feel that they also personally knew Lois Wilson. This was a hard life to read about, but I learned a lot from the experiences in the pages. I hope that God will use this book to expand understanding about alcoholism, and the strong family that it takes to support one.

This book should be available through every public library for those who do not have it on their own shelf.
When Love is not enough.......2007-03-21
This was very well done, and I think illustrated Lois Wilson's personality. One topic I wish the author had added a little more detail on is the issue of co-dependency.

Customer Reviews:
First rate thriller.......2007-03-07
A very exciting and well-wriiten book. I couldn't put it down till I have finished the last line.
While it is true that two EDS employees were rescued and smuggled out of Iran, the details were obtained from EDS men and Poss Perot. Whether they were completely true and authentic is an open question. Thus far, I have not heard from anyone challenging the facts.
Mr Follett, you did an excellent job.
GREAT story, and it's true!.......2006-12-24
Ken Follett captures in his unique, exciting style the true life story of Ross Perot's refusal to let the Iranian government hold two of his employees in captivity when they had done nothing wrong. The book follows the actual events through the capture of the the two employees, the ineffectual US government attempts to release them through diplomatic channels, and the assembly and training of the recovery team. Follett does an excellent job of profiling the team, detailing their military and professional backgrounds, as well as their personal situations and motivations for volunteering for the rescue mission. The author also gives an excellent profile of Ross Perot, the friendly, seemingly soft-spoken millionaire with a will of steel. This book is easy to read, with plenty of adventure and the occassional humorous story to keep it personal and human. An absolutely outstanding story, it not only tells a true story but teaches important lessons about leadership and loyalty.

Book Review: "On Wings of Eagles" by Ken Follett; published by William Morrow, New York in 1983; Non Fiction.
I read quite a few books, usually one or two per week on average, and my selection varies widely from the latest murder mystery fiction novels to the more mundane non fiction biographies of ordinary people that lived through extraordinary situations hundreds or even thousands of years ago. I am a firm believer that almost every book is worth reading especially if the alternative is not to read at all. I like reading so much that when left alone in an environment with no other suitable distraction I will often read the labels on product cartons including tissue boxes, furniture cushions, and even the tiny shampoo bottles found in hotels. Reading is educational, entertaining, and therapeutic while also being quite inexpensive, flexible, and completely portable. Like most readers I have developed a preference for a number of topics and acquired an addiction for a few select authors yet one book stands out among all others as by far the best book I have read in over 30 years of persistent study.
The book currently at the top of my list is "On Wings of Eagles" by Ken Follett. This book reads like a non-stop action thriller and it competes with the finest of the wild and dramatic novels out there yet the most incredible aspect of the story is that it is 100% true as recounted to the author first hand by many of the original subjects. I know this for fact as I have researched the story several times, at first in disbelief and then later out of admiration and a passion to find out even more about the origins of this unique situation and the amazing people that were involved. My research included querying numerous news archives, reviewing public profiles of several large corporations, communicating with a few veteran book collectors, and eventually to direct contact with the author who was kind enough to correspond with me on several occasions.
The story takes place in that late 1970s. It starts innocently enough when EDS, a large computer processing company based in Dallas, wins a contract from the Iranian government to provide computer hardware and software that will administer the Iranian social security system including taxes, finances, and payouts to the citizens of Iran. The company assigns hundreds of employees to the project and many of them are relocated to Iran where they setup a typical corporate office complete with cubicles, meeting rooms, typewriters, secretaries, etc. They install and maintain a massive mainframe computer system and live relatively normal lives including a Monday-Friday work week with shopping, social events, and errands on the weekends. A number of the main executives even brought their families with them to eliminate the burden of long term separation that often accompanies massive out of town projects. The wives furnish and decorate their houses and apartments, they buy cars and appliances, and the kids go to school just like they would back home in Dallas. Several families even have pets including dogs, cats, and birds.
For a while everything seems to be going well and the contract is worth many millions in revenue so the company is looking forward to a substantial profit as the deliverables are completed and payment is made. This is where the trouble starts. The Iranian government becomes unstable and they withhold payment on all invoices due to the company despite the significant work that has already been completed. Various fanatical groups emerge to stir up trouble in their desire to take over from the local government. Demonstrations are held in the streets, protests and vandalism become common, and civil order begins to erode. Eventually it becomes unsafe for the Americans to travel after dark and a curfew is imposed. The EDS workers and their families are concerned but they assume this is a temporary situation that will blow over in time once the political arguments are resolved. They are initially confident of their safety since they are providing a critical service to the Iranian government which in turn provides a valuable service to the Iranian citizens, so of course it would be unwise for Iran to turn on the service providers that are supporting them.
Unfortunately the opposite happens and in just a few short months the entire country is thrown into a full scale revolution which includes severe restrictions on travel. Violence, gunfire, and civil unrest are common place and there is now a much greater threat to Americans in particular. At this point the US government issues orders to evacuate all non-essential US embassy staff and American citizens living in Iran, so of course the company decides to evacuate the employees and temporarily shut down the project. Most of the employees put their belongings in storage or hire Iranian friends to look after their homes and possessions in anticipation of returning once order has been restored. A small skeleton crew of top executives and core employees volunteer to remain behind and maintain the system in hopes that the Iranian government will be restored, pay the outstanding invoices, and welcome the Americans back to resume their work on the lucrative contract.
Unbeknownst to EDS, the Iranian government was running out of money thus they were not able to pay the invoices however they also needed to keep the system running to maintain critical services if they were to eventually recover. To solve their dilemma one of the government officials decides to have two of the top executives arrested, interrogated, and jailed on false charges of corruption. The official refuses to pay the invoices and insists that the remaining crew continue to maintain the system. The executives are found guilty without a trial and bail is set at $13 million dollars. The entire process is quite unusual given the normal laws and legal processes in Iran so EDS immediately engages a team of top lawyers and US government officials to get their employees released from prison and returned to the US.
A long battle ensues driven primarily by Ross Perot, the EDS President, and his extensive network of powerful corporate and political allies. All options are considered including payment of the outrageous bail however nothing works. The US government is not willing to risk creating an international incident since the employees initially appear to be safe in jail, the legal advisors recommend against paying the bail since there is no assurance that the employees would be released and it could encourage further arrests or increased demands, and all attempts to reason or bargain with the Iranian government end in total failure. At this point Ross makes a bold move which would have been viewed as completely insane by many and actively thwarted by all government officials had they known about it at the time.
Ross decided to form a small team of his top executives by selecting those that were closest and most loyal to him. By coincidence they also just happened to be ex-military soldiers formerly assigned to Special Forces duty for the US Army. Ross then hired an old friend of his, a legendary retired military colonel and former Green Beret known as Col. Bull Simmons, to lead the newly formed commando team. He gathered the group in his Dallas headquarters, swore them to secrecy which included cover stories for their families, and charged them with doing whatever it took to rescue the imprisoned employees and bring them back to the US. He provided unlimited funds, transportation, and valuable connections to certain influential parties that could get things done. Then he stepped out of the way and let the team get to work.
Col. Simmons trained the team, conducted reconnaissance, obtained the proper gear, and arranged for the team to be smuggled into Iran. The remainder of the story is quite exciting and will keep you turning page after page well into the early morning hours as you fight off sleep and struggle to keep your eyes open for just one more paragraph. I won't ruin the surprise by relating the outcome but suffice to say it is quite an adventure that serves as a reminder of how strong the bonds can become between team members when they are led and motivated by the best and then made dependent on each other for survival against all odds.
In closing I recommend that you buy not one but several copies of this book. You will want one to read, one to keep in safe storage with your permanent collection, and several to give to your family and friends. In the past several years I have purchased more than a dozen copies and given them all away except for one which is an original first edition hardback that was signed by Ken Follett, Ross Perot, and 7 of the top executives that were involved in the rescue operation. That copy is safely stored away with my most treasured possessions where it remains for many months at a time until I get the urge to pull it out and read it again or show it to friends as I highly recommend an item for their shopping list on their next trip to the bookstore.
Why Ross Perot Couldn't Get Elected Dog Catcher.......2006-09-15
This is an enjoyable book. Follett is a great writer. Read it, you'll enjoy it.
What I found most interesting is that even though Perot hired Follett to write this book, it still makes Perot look like the most paranoid, wannabe, egomaniac out there.
Read this book with that in mind and you'll love it.
Narrative Non-Fiction At Its Best.......2006-08-19
I picked this book up to read after visiting Mr. Perot's office. The book is a testimony to the commitment of a boss and fellow workers to risk it all to take care of your people and your friends. Whatever the debate within the State Department about Perot not giving diplomatic measures time to work, Perot realized time was of the essence and decisions could not wait.
A side lesson, apropos for today, was the rescue teams requirement to negotiate with government officials, tribal leaders, mullah's, and anyone toting a gun to achieve objectives or make progress.
This is a book about men who were selfless, placing their lives in great danger, adapting on the fly, and then returning to America to work in their buisness suits. A rare group indeed.

Colorado Wings, an Excellent Read!.......2003-01-11
This book was excellent! All four stories are linked together beautifully, and when you finish one, you'll want to start the other. The mystery element was a nice, added touch. If you enjoy Tracie Peterson's work, you should NOT miss this novella collection. It's a must-read!
Wonderful!.......2002-12-08
I liked this as much as "Sunrise". Good read, but like 'em a little hotter like my newest favorite "Anything, my Love" by Cynthia Simmons.
Intrigue! Romance! Suspense! Heavy on Faith!!.......2001-02-06
Tracie Peterson takes the lives of some very interesting and prevocative people, separates them into four spell-binders, and then puts one cover on all! True to style, the author lets the reader learn all about the budding romances, the extreme disappointments, the rational and irractional fears and the final triumphs of faith!
Set in the Colorado Rockies, the love stories unfold slowly, entwined with tremendous complications of suspense, suspicion and subtle sub-stories.
The characters from story one continue over to story two and so on, just the lead changes. Tracie keeps the reader comfortable with glimpses from the previous stories as she unfolds the mysteries of the subsequent ones.
This 4-story book is not only romance, it is faith in God and faith and trust in other people at its best!
Kudos again Tracie!
Peterson does it again!.......2001-02-01
These four novellas are Peterson's best. I could not put the book down! Go get this book - you won't regret it.

Interesting insights into the airwar of WW-2........2002-09-20
Hajo Herrmann is perhaps not as well known as some of the great fighter aces of World War II on the German side , but his book provides a close-up first hand view of some of the more interesting aspects of that conflict. The "style" in which the story is told is hampered by the fact that we are reading a translation , and the "style" thus becomes the responsibility of the translator rather than the author. German is not an easy language to translate into a readable and literary form. Oberst(colonel) Herrmann embarked on a rather remarkable post-war career as a highly regarded lawyer in Germany, so I doubt his use of language and writing ability sould be questioned.
Herrmann , very early in his career , was close to many of the major figures in the Luftwaffe : Hermann Goering , in particular. In the first chapter of the book , Herrmann describes how Goering personally encouraged him to join the new infant service as an officer cadet.
The career of the author is virtually a roadmap of Germany's early triumphs. One of the most interesting(to me) tales involves his bombing of the harbor of Athens in a Ju-88 and the sinking of a munitions ship in an explosion of "near nuclear proportion". Also interesting were the descriptions of the battles against the PQ convoys to Murmansk over the Barents Sea.
But it was as the originator of the "Wilde Sau", or wild boar nightfighting tactic that brought Herrmann both fame and earned him the animosity of many other highly regarded officers of the Luftwaffe.
I consider the book one of the best of the first person narrations of the former enemy camp. The author comes through the "style" problem as a real man of honor , and I would recommend this work highly to any serious student of military history.
TYpical German biography.......2000-04-26
Hermann, one of the more nazi of the nazis in Luftwaffe, was a controversial character, and decided to write this book to make the truth clear. But he writes in a heavy language, that makes the reading unpleasant and totally boring. Anyway, as a major figure in Luftwaffe, he deserves credit for the book.

The "Wild Boar" tells his own Story.......1999-02-09
The foremost personalities of the "Nightfighters War" are inextricably linked with their specialities.Wolfgang "the falcon" Falck will always be considered the "father of Nightfighting in WWII", but above all a chivalrous gentleman. The immortal Lent and Prinz Sayn zu-Wittgenstein will be remembered for their self-sacrifice, brilliance and staggering scores. And Hajo Herrmann will be remembered for the Wilde Zau tactics which arguably thwarted Bomber Harris's plans to crush Germany in 1943-1944. In a complex technological war when the British scientists had the upper hand in quashing German radars, Hajo Herrmann proposed the abandonment of the technological burden and return to free lance fighting. Many experts have blasted Herrmann for going against all the technological advances the NachtJager had made uptil 1943, however I have believe that Herrmann didn't want to replace technological know-how with blind flying "Wild Boar tactics" but simply to gain time for the German scientists to respond to British advances in the scientific aspect of the Nightfighters' War. Many blame Herrmann for Kammhuber's dismissal (rather removal to Norway). That is true but the final blame lay with the "fat one" who simply never got a grip on the great advances made in aerial warfare since WWI. Personally, I don't understand how Goering could command the JagdStaffel "Richthofen" in 1918 after the Red Baron's death when there were other highly capable leaders left, most notably, the Red Baron's brother, Lothar(a 44-victory ace). I say this because many people assume that simply because he commanded the illustrious "JagdGeschwader 1 Richthofen" in WWI , he was a tactian.Far from it. He was no where near Bolcke or Richthofen in that field. Back to subject at hand, controversial as Kammhumber's dismissal was, it is most interesting to speculate what would have happened if the immortal Helmut Lent had been appointed Inspector of NightFighters and then Goering had tried to dismiss him!?! HE undoubtedly would have had a revolt of the Nightfighter pilots as he did the Dayfighters. Nevertheless, Hajo Herrmann brought a new type of fighting which could have only worked temporarily. Most Wilde Zau pilots couldn't adapt to blind flying. Herrmann was a brilliant pilot, and he made the mistake of assuming that others would be just like him. Hundreds of his pilots parachuted destroying undamaged aircraft in the process. But he temporarily stemmed the bomber's tide until the NachtJager could resume their technological war. And for this Herrmann will forever be associated with the "Wild Boars of the Night".
The Personal Story of a Controversial Man.......1998-11-19
Of all the Luftwaffe officers involved in the internal politics of their service, Hajo Herrmann was one of those who became thoroughly embroiled in the fighting. However, he didn't come to such prominence until after 1943. He accounts of his life and service uptil that time are very colourful indeed. He was one of the "Spaniards" of the Condor Legion. And he had a good tour there. His accounts are reflective and philosophical. His autobiography is well aided by quotes from philosophers. He was the hero of many bombing raids, on England and Greece and other theatres of operations. But he gained greater prominence when his ideas about night defense were finally heard by Goering, especially after the disaster of Hamburg in 1943. He proved his theories about Wilde Zau tactics and was eventually put in command of a JagdGeschwader dedicated to that type of fighting. Always coming up with radical ideas, he finally clashed with Galland, General der Jagdflieger (GdJ) over the ramming operations Herrmann proposed. Herrmann also felt resentment, he considered officers like Galland, early war years pilots, to be out of touch with the 'reality' of the war. Paradoxically, officers like Galland had thought the same of men like Goering the same way in the early years. An interesting point. The mutiny over the position of Inpecktur der Jagdflieger completed the full scale clash of personalities and not just between Herrmann and Galland. At the edge of the precipice in 1944-1945, the Luftwaffe was open to radical ideas, and Herrmann was willing to supply them. So he got his way. Nevertheless, his ideas of an aircraft which could unite all the virtues of fighters, bombers and Stukas says much about his thinking. Yet 1944-1945 were not for new ideas, but to make the best use of resources. Herrmann was a tough pilot, his personal courage beyond question, despite the accusations of his sceptics.( He was the winner of the Knight's Cross to the Iron Cross with the Oak Leaves and Swords) Despite his friendship with colleagues and his tactical thinking, his name will remain linked to the controversial ideas and the general dissent within the Luftwaffe in the latter years of the Second World War.

The story of a modern hero of Israel .......2005-04-25
Ezer Weizmann made major contributions to the building of the modern state of Israel. In this autobiography he tells of his role in building the Israeli Air Force. He was one of the first fighter- pilots helping to establish the State in its War of Independence. More than anyone else he helped build the Israeli Air Force into one of the best in the world. He was the architect of the Israeli lightning air- victory in the Six Day War. Later he entered politics and was a central figure in forming the Likud party and helping bring a major transformation , the dethroning of the Labor party and the bringing of Menachem Begin's Likud to power. This work is the story of these early glory years.
It does not tell of the political conversion Weizmann made in later life, his moving into what is called the 'peace- camp' in Israel, his key role in the peace negotiations with Egypt at Camp David. It too does not tell of his controversial reign as President of Israel.
Like his sometime rival Yitzhak Rabin, Weizmann for many exemplified the Israeli sabra hero of the first years of the State. Frank, humorous, tremendously innovative and energetic he brought life and flavor into all he did . He was a true believer in Israel, and the Zionist enterprise and a great contributor to it. And was much loved by its people.
This review is written the day after his passing from the world. May his soul be uplifted and his memory and work be a blessing for the generations of Israel to come.
Book Description
Ever since Jesus read from the scroll of Isaiah in the synagogue of Nazareth, Christians have gravitated to this great prophecy as the interpretive center of the Old Testament. Here the story of Israel, scourged by judgment and exile and hopeful of restoration, is framed by its witnesses, heaven and earth. How will Israel be brought through its school of suffering and be propelled toward its divine destiny as the vanguard of a new heaven and earth? In the visionary world of Isaiah, the varied themes and imagery of the Old Testament converge and blend to transcend their plainest meanings as they project an extraordinary climax of the story of Israel and of the world.Barry Webb calls Isaiah the "Romans" of the Old Testament, where all the threads come together and the big picture of God's purposes for his people and for his world are most clearly set forth. Attuned to the magnificent literary architecture of Isaiah, Webb escorts us through this prophecy and trains our ears and hearts to resonate with its great biblical-theological themes.

The Message of Isaiah: On Eagles' Wings (Bible Speaks Today).......2005-08-31
Clearly written, in a most helpful way. A great benefit when reading Isaiah. Spot on!
A Good Exposition of Isaiah.......2002-12-30
A while back I started reading through Isaiah again--one chapter a day. I wanted to supplement to my reading with a commentary that would give me historical background and help me better understand this wonderful book in Scripture. I wanted something that would help me apply the inspiration and insights of Isaiah to my own life. I found this book well suited to the purpose of personal devotional study. It is a fine exposition of Isaiah. It provides enough material to clarify its message and put it in context without getting the reader bogged down in technical details. It treats the book of Isaiah as a unified whole rather than a fragmented collection of writings from 2 or 3 sources. It is written from the conviction that God speaks to us through Isaiah today as well as He did to the prophet's primary audience.
An excellant commentary for beginners and exegetists........1998-09-20
Mr. Webb, writting within the confines of "The Bible Speaks Today" has done an outstanding job of making a very difficult book of the Bible very understandable. If you don't believe in prophecy and miracles, you will probably disagree with me. But, if your standard is the Bible, or you are looking to understand the Bible (a great way to come to know God), then I highly recommend this book. I am using it as the text for my adult Sunday School class which consists of brand new Christians to people who have been studying the Bible for decades. Mr. Webb is providing the necessary foundations and fresh insights for all of them. I started out with commentaries from H.A. Ironside and J. Vernon McGee, but I have settled on this book as my primary source with Mr. Ironside's and Mr. McGee's commentaries supplementing it.
