Book Description

Part One Of Two Parts

It is hard to imagine anything new about Churchill. But in this life of the young lion, William Manchester brings us fresh encounters and anecdotes. Alive with examples of Churchill's early powers, THE LAST LION entertains and instructs.

"Manchester is not only master of detail, but also of `the big picture.'...I daresay most Americans reading THE LAST LION will relish it immensely." (National Review)

4 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD!.......2007-09-27

This is a very good analysis of Churchill, a thorough and colorfull portrait of a man I consider to be the greatest man of the 20th century. I have only two complaints, first I would have liked to have known more about his life with his wife and children. I also would have liked to have known what he thought of the Lusitania sinking. Not only does Manchester say nothing about Churchill's role in this business but the word Lusitania is not mentioned at all in nearly 2000 pages. Very strange. The letters of Churchill point out the chivalrousness and romantic nature that the public has not seen. All in all - very good and well worth a good read.

5 out of 5 stars What a great writer, writing about an even better man!.......2007-05-18

William Manchester is a tremendous writer. A man like Churchill deserved to have his biography writted by a writer as gifted as him.
I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting, not only to learn much about the great man Churchill, but also to have their mind expanded and stretched by excellent literature like this. There are not many people writing like this today, sadly enough.
This is not an easy read, in fact most people will do well to have a dictionary near by - but it is worth it. Drink deeply and you will learn so much more than you would have thought possible about the world from the late 19th century up through WWII.
Drink it up! 6 stars.

5 out of 5 stars As Good as Biography Gets.......2005-11-08

This fully lives up to its reputation as perhaps the best biography ever written. Manchester does a peerless, masterful job filling in the background colors and giving a complete picture of Churchill from a young man into his early fifties. As Manchester emphasizes, this background was essentially the decline and fall of the British Empire and the aristocracy who ran it. Manchester's main point, that Churchill was a Victorian who also lived in the twentieth century, is brilliantly made. Churchill himself is presented in all his perplexing, influriating splendor: an impetuous, charming, ambitious genius who all too often jumped out of the plane without a parachute. If you wish to know why he was rejected by the British people at the polls just after his greatest triumph (and job done) this fascinating volume of his early triumphs and memorable failures is indispensible (answer: they needed his boistrous energy in war but they didn't trust him in peace

5 out of 5 stars Best Churchill biography.......2005-03-15

Best biography of the person who really should have been the " greatest person of the 20th century". He, more than anyone else, stood alone against Nazism, which, no matter how you feel about the present state of Western civilization, kept it from being completely unrecognizable today. He pushed Roosevelt into joining Britain against the Nazis, and was willing to push Britain to keep on fighting alone, down to the last person ; at suicidal odds for many months. He had vision, and was fearless. And, prior to WW2, his exploits in the Boer War and in WW1 make his entire life fascinating. The fact that he was very "aristocratic" in his background has probably made his image diminish in our time. That sort of reverse discrimination is very unfair, I feel. He was also witty, not the least bit warm and cuddly (!) and a pretty good painter.

4 out of 5 stars Understand the most Remarkable Man of the 20th Century.......2004-01-14

This is an excellent book on the first half of the life of a truly exceptional man. Mr Manchester's book deals with Winston's early life and his rise to power and fame. I particularly liked the vignettes about life at the turn of the century; the social situation, the class struggle, the morals of the upper and the working classes.

Just reading it makes you feel somehow inadequate against the intellectual brilliance, courage and sheer energy of the subject.

It would have merited a full five star rating but for two faults. It should have been shorter. It as if every single little titbit of information had to be written out in full, rather than filtered through the critical intellect that Mr Manchester undoubtedly possesses. Instead, he quotes too many letters, reports and speeches in full when his job as a biographer was to summarise them.

The second fault was Mr Manchester's tendency to lionise his subject. Brilliant he may have been, but a bit more acknowledgement of Winston's faults would have made him more human and reachable.

But this is nitpicking. Overall the book is a good read on a subject well worth reading about.

I loved this comic! I want to see more women depicted this way in comics. Why aren't more out there like this.

            3 out of 5 stars comic anarchy.......2007-02-22

tank girl is the chronicles of a post apocalyptic beer-swilling punk-chic tank commander and the crew of misfits shes friends with. the motley crew includes, jet girl and sub girl, booga (tank girl's mutant kangaroo boyfriend), and stevie the surfer aborigonee. the art is really wild and imaginative but somewhat uneven, sometimes its really good and sometimes the characters look extremely crudely drawn. the plot is nonexistant and the comic relies heavily on slapstick, swearing, booze and extreme violence coupled with silliness, but it works. its a genre piece aimed at hipsters and punk kids but i like it.

            3 out of 5 stars Fun read.......2007-01-06

Tank Girl is the name of a female survivour who travels around in the post apocalyptic Australia. On her adventurers she runs into various odd fellows(In this book she even meets the devil!) The comic is rarely takes itself serious, and the artwork is pretty fun to look at. Many small funny details.

4 out of 5 stars The Symbol for the British Counterculture of the 90's .......2005-07-09

Tank Girl was more than some British indie comic book creation. She was a proverbial slap in the face to virtually everything mainstream. That is, of course, until she herself became a sellout (ahh Hollywood). This book represents the beginning of her golden age with Martin and Hewlett (now of Gorillaz fame) at the helm. She's raunchy, she's violent, she's strangely sexy and she gives new meaning to "girl power." While you may need urbandictionary.com to find out the meaning of all the British slang the authors use, and some gags relate to events of the early 90's - and are thus outdated, Tank Girl still holds up incredibly well after nearly fifteen years. This is a must read for anyone who loves indie comics and/or period peices with an insight into a particularly rebellious subculture of the last decade.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME ART, very original, hilarious themes.......2003-10-11

... Tank Girl rules!!! I can imagine that some people would not be into it, but nonetheless, the drawings are so awesome, the layout of the comic itself is totally original, and the stories are beyond insane. Maybe it's not a good comic for the very straight-forward narrow minded individual... But if you enjoy Bloody senseless death to random people, hot chicks(with huge guns), bizarre sex jokes, and well, possibly drugs, you will love the Tank Girl series. I recommend books 1-3, after that, Alan Martin is no longer the writer, and I feel that him and Jamie Hewlett (The artist) are a great combo. Tank Girl rules, I got the first book, now I am obsessed and I own them all. Long live Tank Girl! (But not long live the movie!)

Tank Girl does not make sense, she can out run Mr. Whippy. She Does not like you. Tank girl is mean. The drawings by the hewl only bare SLIGHT resemblance with the gorillaz drawings he did. They have nothing in common. If you think you do, you deserve to have your copy of tank girl 2 and all others you may have stolen.

5 out of 5 stars If you hated the movie?.......2005-03-08

You may be one of those people who asked themselves, 'Why in $^%$# did they make this movie? That is in regard to the textbook case of Hollywood compromise and dreck that was the incredably dissapointing film version. Well the answers are in the pages of one of the best demented comics ever made. Unfortunetly, movie execs couldn't greenlight a purely sociopathic superheroine who mows down her enemies and can not hear their screams (cause her personal stereo is on too loud!)So she had to have a name (in the movie) and a little girl to save (just like the heroine in another movie, you can here the pitch meeting! It will be like Aliens meets The great rock and roll swindle with a little Kissing Jessica Stein thrown in.)No plot (who needs it!)loads of sarcasm and self parody, lot's of pointless violence! The best punk rock comic ever made. If you like Gorillaz videos, that's about as deep as it gets... only funnier.

4 out of 5 stars Printed Insanity, not for everyone.......2003-11-20

Tank Girl is the epitome of a cult classic. It is definately not your traditional comic, there isn't much plot to speak of, nor is there much depth in the stories. This is not the book to read for concise social commentary or introspection. This magic of Tank Girl lies in its incredible art, cathartic writing, and the interaction between the numerous insane characters (as well as the characters and the creators). I would reccommend Tank Girl to someone with a very twisted sense of humor and an open mind. It's not for everyone, and does take a different mind set to appreciate. The only reason I do not give it 5 stars is that one or two of the stories in this book were a little too slow at points, and some of the pages were too cluttered. These are minor gripes, but I don't want to say it's a perfect collection. But worth the $.

Every nutjob cult out there has decided that the end is near. They all disagree on how near, though, so they set out to make sure their end date is THE end date. Then, Our Girl discovers that she's inhabited by a little being - one who looks forward to calling her 'Mama'. Tank Girl, Mama. Say it a few times. Just doesn't work, does it? Sorry, her uterus says that's the way it is. Never argue with a uterus. (For one thing, they never listen.)

It seems like the end of the world for her. Oddly enough, all those other end-of-the-worlders seem to agree. Her little bouncing whatever is (as they say) The Sign, great sacrifice material, and the chase is on.

So, with bad attitude, bulging belly, and big battlegear, she's off. Booga, her mutant `roo bedmate can't wait to be a daddy (you want it so much? do it yourself). But, with Tank Girl, there's always one more surprise.

Tank's summer is not shaping up the way he'd hoped. It's bad enough that his three stepsisters will be sharing his cramped house for the summer vacation. But passing fifth grade is a big deal too and soon, inspired by his brother's breakup with Jason's sister, Tank realizes he can fill his notebook writing a guide to girls. It will be a bestseller!

Tank has plenty of material to work with-his three stepsisters and Jason's strange new interest in Kelly, the Mistress of Evil. What is up with that, anyway? Readers first met Tank and Jason in Trading Places with Tank Talbott.

                    Nudity with Military vehicles
Basically, take a few nice looking ladies, pay them to lounge over some restored vehicles without clothing, shoot photo's and publish a book.
Content is only for those that like seeing naked women shoot machinegun type photos. There are some nice "Details" in the shots when you look past the foreground subjects at the vehicles themselves, but that's not the authors intention anyway.
Oh well, from appearances, the collection would have been a nice detailing of the vehicles, but taste, etc.
