Book Description

It leaves you wondering..........2007-09-30
The Spanish version of Brian Weiss's book, "Muchas vidas, muchos sabios" is even more intriguing to me than my English version. (La version del libro de Brian Weiss es aun mas intrigante para me que la version en Ingles.) For those who believe in reincarnation, this is a great book (Para aquellos que creen en la reincarnacion, este es un gran libro.)

Book Description
A popular history of the English Civil War--one of the great turning points in Western history--told through the harrowing experiences of the men and women who lived through it
In this compelling history of the violent struggle between the monarchy and Parliament that tore apart seventeenth-century England, a rising star among British historians sheds new light on the people who fought and died during those tumultuous years. Like the Magna Carta or the American Revolution, the English Civil War resolved fundamental questions of sovereignty and political rights that are still the guiding principles of democracies today. However, the price of peace included the execution of a king, brutal persecution of Catholics and Royalists, and years of tyranny. Drawing on exciting new sources, including letters, memoirs, ballads, plays, illustrations, and even cookbooks, Diane Purkiss creates a rich and nuanced portrait of this turbulent era.
Purkiss peoples her story with fascinating characters, from the obstinate King Charles I to his opponents such as the poet John Milton, from the cruel and egomaniacal Oliver Cromwell to the self-styled prophet Lady Eleanor Davies, to witchfinders, revolutionaries, and ordinary men and women. The English Civil War's dramatic consequences--the rejection of divine right monarchy in favor of parliamentary rule--continue to influence our lives. In this colorful narrative, Diane Purkiss brings vividly to life the history that changed the course of Western government.

Unique and Effective.......2007-04-05
A fantastic example of a bottom-up history that works. Dr. Purkiss paints a picture of the English Civil War using particular examples and stories from the common man, while keeping clear the role of political events, battles, and "great men". This book provides a detailed account of the causes and implications (without oversimplifying them) of the English Civil War on a grand scale while focusing on the impact it had on the people of England, something that is essential to understanding the period. If you are looking for an account of battles and diplomacy, there are better choices, but if you want to understand the mark the Civil War left on the English people, look no further.
Bit disjointed but still good.......2006-10-10
I was able to follow the narrative despite the author's focus on accounts of individuals. This focus gave me a better sense of what it felt like to be a participant in the war (whether or not you wanted to be). Also, unlike other books I've read on the English civil war, I was able to get a sense of which events were truly important: the battle of Naseby, for example, was not merely a defeat for the Royalist forces (as was Maston Moor) but a complete route which left the Royalist forces unable to recover. I do think that the book would benefit from a timeline of important events, so that reader can be reminded of the chronological order of vents. Also a list of the important "characters", with short biographies, would be helpful so that the reader is not confused when an eyewitness who has not been heard from in recent pages reappears.
In depth history, with a focus on the people involved.......2006-10-03
If you want a history of the battles of the English Civil War, this is not the book for you. If you are interested in the human side of this horrific period, then this is a book for you. While the battles are mentioned, they are placed in a much broader context.
This is a history of the English Civil War, told to a considerable extent through the words of observers and participants. Letters and diaries of people such as Brilliana Harley; tracts by Garrard Winstanley (a leading Digger); the debate at Putney, between leaders and Levellers add a very human element to this history.
The befuddled King Charles I and his strong-willed Queen, Henrietta Maria, are portrayed in enough depth that the reader can come to understand how they sealed their fates by being unable to recognize a changing reality.
The book takes into account religious disputes, political currents, and military developments.
For any reader interested in this critical moment in English history, this is a book well worth purchasing and reading.
Poorly Written? No, just a different approach.......2006-09-04
It seems that Christopher Drost didn't really know what he was getting into with Diane Purkiss' new book. One should not read this for a comprehensive linear history of the English Civil War. In fact, there are chapters I breezed through because my interest in certain local details wasn't too high. But the forest-trees issue is precisely the point. For a good sense of the Elizabeth-James transition, one could read Leanda De Lisle's "After Elizabeth"; for the war from Charles' perspective, maybe Pauline Gregg's "King Charles I"; for the aftermath of the commonwealth, maybe Mark Kishlansjy's "A Monarchy Transformed." But these books are all broad-brush looks at how the war was perceived by royalist or Puritan leaders. Purkiss tells us what the war felt like from the ground up, and for that we should be grateful. There really isn't another work on the war that takes this particular perspective.
My Favorite Kind of History.......2006-08-23
Diane Purkiss doesn't get lost in amongst the Charles and James of the Stuart royal family, instead she concentrates on how the upheavals of the 17th century affected the ordinary person. She makes history real and textured. The everyday fabric of life presented in this book shows how the big event finds expression in small ways. Great research and great writing.
Book Description
Dividing the nation and causing massive political change, the English Civil War remains one of the most decisive and dramatic conflicts of English history. The Causes of the English Revolution examines the factors leading up to the deposition of Charles I in 1642 and analyses the crisis of confidence at the root of his demise. In this seminal work, Lawrence Stone explores theories of revolution and traces the social and economic change that led to this period of instability. Now with a new introduction by John Brewer (author of The Pleasures of the Imagination), this classic text is essential reading for all those fascinated by the fraught battle for power between Charles I and Cromwell.

When reforms turn revolutionary..............2004-10-06
In 1640 few supported the dissolution of the monarchy or the House of Lords...The heart of this book is its long chapter on the causes of the English revolution. That revolution, Stone maintains, was in a real sense caused by the dissolution of government (rather than causing its dissolution); that "class" warfare along Marxist explanatory lines is not applicable to the revolution and; that the revolution was more than a reaction to unpopular monarch. He then sets out to identify the long-term, underlying causes of the war and its more proximate catalysts. His discussion of the weak reach of the Tudor bureaucracy and its corresponding lack of credibility as a legal enforcer, and his discussion of the impact of Puritan thought are especially compelling.
The first section of the book surveys the methodological issues involved in explaining revolution. This survey, though somewhat dated by now, still provides useful insights. And, he has a caustic eye for those of his colleagues who prefer an arid, artifically technical jargon over clarity and concise prose.

Border Fury.......2006-11-10
Excellent book that does an outstanding effort detailing the historical 1296-1568 period of the Scottish / English border, complimenting the book The Steel Bonnets by Fraser G. MacDonald.
Book Description
The Reformation in England further distanced the Irish, as the majority of Irishmen adhered stubbornly to their Catholicism. Eventually, in Elizabeth's reign, both sides resorted to the use of force on a large scale in a series of bloody wars and rebellions that were to culminate in the Earl of Tyrone's 'Great Rebellion' of 1595-1603. This text by Ian Heath looks at the history, organisation and tactics of the armies of the Irish Wars 1485-1603, armies which included such troops as the fearsome Irish Galloglasses, who bore a deadly axe six feet long with a blade one foot broad!

A Good Resource for Historians and Reenactors alike.......2004-06-22
The Irish Wars provides a great overall accounting for the composition of Irish and English forces in Ireland from the late 1400's to the early 1600's. Of special interest is the timeline, which has been referenced and replicated by many who regard it as the best overall timeline to date. This makes the purchase of this book 'worth it' on this merit alone.
Many of the passages are partisan, which is fairly common considering that the only Irish who kept any sort of written history at this time, were monks. So, most of the notable references are English. Therefore, a partisan view tends to predominate the text.
The description of Irish guerilla warfare is fairly well covered but could have been elaborated upon substantially as in G.A.Hayes-McCoy's "Irish Battle's". Otherwise, the descriptions of Ceathearn, Galloglaich, and Buannacht are fairly accurate. A telling omission is that Lord Mountjoy disarmed some of his green recruits and gave the pieces (musket) to his Irish recruits, knowing that they were much better shots. Furthermore, the artwork is attrocious. It is loosely based off of woodcuts (Which are represented in the plates) and drawings done by Lucas DeHerre, which were misproportioned to begin with. A copy of a bad original just makes a bad copy. It's unfortunate that Angus McBride, who did the artwork in "The Border Rievers" book of the same Men at Arms series, had not done this one. In "The Border Rievers" he has an excellent watercolor of an Irish Kern and Galloglas attacking a horsed Englishman or Low-Scot Riever.
Minus the artwork and some omissions, this is a great source for historians and reenactors. I highly recommend applying it with other source material, such as "Tyrone's Rebellion", "Elizabeth's Irish Wars", and "Irish Battles".
Quick overview of Irish Wars.......2000-01-21
This well-illustrated book gives a good overview of the Anglo-Irish wars of 1485-1603. It presents an overview of the relationships between the two countries, defines the warring armies and identifies specific types of soldiers, including gallowglas and kern. The illustrations are its strong suit. Many period drawings are included as well as full color reproductions done by present-day artists. For people wanting to see how the soldiers dressed, this is a very good source.
Book Description
B> This latest book in the Modern Wars in Perspective series explores the birth of England's sprawling colonial empire from its origins in the middle of the sixteenth century to the Glorious Revolution. The complexity of the military dimensions is explored independently and in relation to the impact of colonial warfare on national identity. The book starts by looking at Ireland and England in the Tudor period with the assault of English settlers on the Irish Gaeltacht which described and analyzed. The author next examines how, under the (Scottish) Stuarts, England then began a dramatic expansion across the North Atlantic and how in America, the `Indian Wars', fought with minimal Crown support, helped forge an independent military capability among the colonists while in the West Indies, slave numbers and French intervention forced English settlers into a new dependency on the Crown. Also explored is how in India, the East India Company achieved ascendancy by sepoy armies under British control.
England's Colonial Wars shows that these were very different kinds of empire achieved and sustained in divergent ways and with profoundly differing long-term consequences. Those interested in British history and Imperialism. Also available in Hardcover 0-582-06297-7; $79.95y.

Book Description
In this major biography, MacCaffrey focuses on Elizabeth's career as a practicing politician, taking into account her formative personal experiences, her temperament, her own view of her role, and the constraints she frequently faced.
Book Description
English Warfare explores the English art of war from Henry VIII's chivalric exuberance on the eve of the Battle of the Spurs 1513, to the shock of an ashen-faced Charles I surveying the carnage upon the field of Edgehill 1642. Did the soldier become more deadly in the era of the "military revolution?" Combat on the Scottish borders, expeditions to the Continent, and incursions into Ireland are in turn described graphically, largely from unpublished sources. Institutional and administrative analysis are punctuated by vignettes from Henry VIII's campaigns into France, the exploits of Elizabethan soldiers fighting in the Low Countries, and fierce skirmishes in the Irish Wars. What emerges is a distinctively English approach to war, which in a discussion of the politico-military crisis of 1640-1, sheds light on why the English Civil War commenced as it did. Well illustrated with maps, battle diagrams, portraits of key personalities.
Customer Reviews:
For anyone with serious interest in British military history.......2002-01-11
Deftly written by Mark Fissel (Professor of History at Augusta State University) and part of the Routledge "Warfare and History" series, English Warfare 1511-1642 is a scholarly, college-level analysis of military operations from the reign of Henry VIII to the start of the Civil War. Manuscript sources are the primary reference for reconstructing military expeditions, such as Henry VIII's battles in France, Scotland, and Ireland, and Elizabeth I's interventions after 1572. No detail is left unexamined of this fascinating and deadly era. English Warfare 1511-1642 is highly recommended for anyone with a serious interest in British military history.

Book Description
The defeat of the Spanish Armada is one of the turning points in English history, and it was perhaps the defining episode in the long reigns of Elizabeth I of England and Philip II of Spain. The running battle along the Channel between the nimble English ships and the lumbering Spanish galleons has achieved almost legendary status. In this compelling new account John Barratt reconstructs the battle against the Armada in the concise, clear Campaign Chronicles format, which records the action in vivid detail, day by day, hour by hour.
He questions common assumptions about the battle and looks again at aspects of the action that have been debated or misunderstood. Included are full orders of battle showing the chains of command and the effective strengths and fighting capabilities of the opposing fleets. There is also an in-depth analysis of the far-reaching consequences of the wreck of Philip II's great enterprise.
Customer Reviews:
Exciting new account using the latest research available........2006-03-14
It is always nice to find an author who knows his stuff. In this case, John Barratt has written extensively on 16th and 17th Century history and is an accomplished author on the subjects of land and sea warfare from that period. More recently, however, his research has been focused on the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and the war with Spain - specifically, the Armada and other Spanish operations in the English Channel.
Research is the key to producing any factual historical account and in this case the author has used the very latest historical and archaeological research available in order to completely reconstructed the battle - day by day and hour by hour. Unlike previous accounts of the Armada of 1588, this carefully compiled and well written work exposes many myths and misunderstandings of the battle at sea by introducing new eyewitness and other contemporary accounts of the day.
For those who wish to know for the first time exactly what happened when Spain set out to invade England and Drake decided to finish his game of Bowls (or did he?) before setting out to see them off, this is the book for you. For those who previously thought they knew all there was to know about that same period in history, then this is the book to steer you through a new understanding of the events in question.
The text is well supported with a carefully chosen selection of illustrations, portraits and maps which appear on each relevant page and not in a small glossy collection in the middle of the book. In this way, each picture is relevant to the adjacent text and does much to support one's reading of the work.
