Book Description

A devoted son. A generous friend. A model Army recruit. A gifted entertainer. A beloved hero to millions. This is the Elvis Presly the world knew -- and cherished.
Brooding. Violent. Obsessed with death. Strung out. Sexually driven. This is the other side of Elvis -- according to the three men who lived with him through it all -- a man who:
* Chamed a beautiful young fan into joining him on a drug binge for two that nearly killed her
* Took a group of friends on a 3 A.M. visit to a mortuary to look at corpses and talk about embalming
* Hurled a pool cue at a party guest who interrupts his game, injuring her breast
* Talked with his bodyguard about a "hit" on the man he felt stole his wife
Steve Dunleavy has woven together the experiences of three Presley bodyguards who were there partying with him, womanizing with him, worrying with him -- tasting the pleasure and the pains of life with the most fabulous star in showbiz history!

5 out of 5 stars Sonny West: Elvis' ONLY true friend.......2007-08-28

This book is a must read and I only wish Elvis would have listened to Sonny's advice. I met Mr. West during Elvis Week this year and he is a classy gentleman. He was sweet, humble and he still loves Elvis. The Bible says in John 15:13, "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." Sonny West was one of the only real, true friends Elvis EVER had.

1 out of 5 stars This Book Deserves To Be Trashed.......2007-07-30

I cannot call Elvis What Happened, By Danny Matthew a good or fascinating read. Red and Sonny West say they wrote the book out of love and loyalty and to help Elvis but perhaps it was to get back at Elvis for firing them. Sure they weren't paid much and for how many years did they stay by his side anyway?
And why would anyone find it amazing that this book came out just before Elvis died of a drug overdose? Elvis read the book and was devastated. He called what these men did 'the worst betrayal.' A day before he died he had the book in his hand and asked a former Memphis Mafia member (I won't say who) 'What are my fans gonna think, and what is my daughter gonna think?'
Surely these are questions Red and Sonny didn't care to ask themselves, especially how it would affect Lisa Marie, losing her father the way she did. Surely she didn't care if daddy was a drug user. Elvis was her daddy. That's all that matters.
Sure he wasted money but it was HIS money (What Colonel Parker didn't take of it. By the way he hated the man.) Elvis also gave friends cars and such and all of the men working for him got perks as well.
And with that said, Red, Sonny, I have questions to ask both of you:
If you cared about Elvis so much, why didn't you try to get him help? Red, Sonny, What Gives?

This book was a good read.
these guys say they wrote this book to help Elvis I am not so sure about that, because a lot of the stories in this book are very hurtful for not only Elvis but his family as well. the book is a good read because it really lets us see just how bad the drug use had gotten.I do think a lot of this maybe true but at the same time
it seems it was written to get back at Elvis for letting them go after so many years. the book takes us inside the world of Elvis in those last drug filled days. it is a sad book but shows you just how bad drugs can take you down. any Elvis fan would find the book interesting.

4 out of 5 stars Amazingly Honest -- lack in literary style kept it from being 5 stars.......2006-02-06

Normally I would never give a book I find to be so sloppily organized and redundant 4 stars. However, I am making an exception with this book because the actual SUBSTANCE in the book is undeniable -- replete with firsthand accounts of many, many different (and often disturbing) scenarios. Full of the demons the kind of life these authors lived has. A fascinating read.

It is a portrait not only of Elvis but of the "yes men" who chose to let Elvis be the center of their universes -- even when they weren't being paid or paid very little. It also describes many, many incidents that show the irresponsibility of Elvis and of themselves in the name of "fun." When Elvis caused damage he just threw money at it, and there was always plenty of money to throw at it; when the "boys" felt any tinges of responsibility for making poor choices they chalked it up to loyalty to Elvis.

He didn't often pay them much, but they lived in the craziness and glamour of a lifestyle only sometime very rich and very famous could have, and -- as it is repeated so often in the book -- their loyalty to him was out of love (at least what they thought was love).

It is amazing that this book came out just before Elvis died of a drug overdose. Most people didn't realize about Elvis's drug habits -- and by the time they did, it was too late.

I can't help but feel that the title: ELVIS: WHAT HAPPENED? was as a direct question to Elvis. As if the guys who wrote it felt that maybe Elvis would read the book and be reminded of how much they loved him -- but also have to face his self-destructive lifestyle.

I find this book very honest not only because of what it says about Elvis -- and it IS about Elvis -- but what it confesses about the men who wrote it -- especially Red West and Sonny West. There is MUCH confession here, and things that would be hard to admit to oneself much less a mass of strangers in a book. If they did not spare Elvis in their truth-telling, I suspect it would be fair to say that they did not spare themselves either. And because of this, I can't help but believe the book is very honest.

The agitatingly redundant part of the book was perhaps more the fault of the ghost writer or editor. It's all right for a two-hour movie to flash back and forth through time, but for an entire book to go from '58 to '73 back to '58 then to '75 then back to '61 and progress to '62 ... well, you get the picture. This is why I don't give the book 5 stars.

If I find a book interesting -- and this one is -- I often like to read it cover to cover in a short amount of time. But this book drove me nuts anytime I gave it more than an hour of reading time due to the unnecessary sense of vertigo from constant drifting and shifting back and forth into different places in time, but also because of certain phrases -- only slightly reworded -- used again and again and again until I could hardly stand it. A good editor, in my opinion, would have cut and pasted that baby big-time -- put it in chronological order -- and then dropped all the repetitive phrases from the book except for perhaps the very beginning and very end of the book.

However it is also those repetitive phrases, along with the title of the book, that make me to feel that this book was written very much with Elvis reading it in mind -- and wanting to remind him over and over how they loved him and were loyal to him in so many ways. Or maybe it wasn't even that. Maybe -- in fact, surely -- they were fighting their own demons after coming out of so many years in their very dysfunctional relationships that they had with Elvis and with each other. Sometimes when you are trying to resolve something and make sense of it you just feel a need to talk about it, hoping that something will suddenly snap and all the pieces will finally fall in place.

Very much a "reality book."

I think the authors really hoped that the book would help bring Elvis to his senses so that he would dry out from all his pills and become the guy they once knew and loved most.

One other thing: I found it fascinating to read all the things people put up with around Elvis. I'm sorry, but just one day with some of his antics with guns for instance and I would be SO out of there. As I read this book I was not just dismayed by Elvis's self-destruction, but by the self-destruction that went on for just about everyone involved in Elvis's daily life (except for the possible exception of Col. Parker who seemed to lead a totally separate personal life, his role being limited more to being Elvis's respected, capable, somewhat heavy-handed and influential personal manager).

Biggest missed opportunity for Elvis: turning down a role in the movie THUNDER ROAD -- apparently under Col. Parker's insistence. Because, like many celebrity singers, Elvis wanted to be a movie star.

I would like to know what Elvis might have done if he had refused to make all the "musical travelogue" movies he hated so and had divorced himself from Col. Parker's ruling hand. Elvis, (and I agree with him), didn't like those movies much and hated making them, but it was "sure money," a thing Parker, like any "good" businessman, always liked to go for. It was Parker too who chose to stage Elvis's "comeback" after the Army in a Las Vegas setting. Well, I won't go on and on anymore. Needless to say, this book got me to thinking about a LOT of things. It's revealing, informative, often brutally honest, and best of all really stirring. It gave me a LOT to think about -- not only about Elvis but about "yes men," women and fans who went over the top in their own personal choices in response to the opportunity to be in the inner circle with this man or chose to storm the stage at one of his concerts, be it for a decade or an hour.

Riveting stuff. Just don't try to read it all at once. I'm tellin' ya, that'd drive you nuts! Perfect would be maybe 15-30 minutes a day. Worth the read.

4 out of 5 stars A fascinating portrait; a good warning to others........2006-01-05

I for one *do* believe the authors loved Elvis and wanted him to get help. On the other hand, as an expose of a friend, it's pretty coldblooded.

It's sad that Elvis died just prior to the release of this book. It might have been the "hit-bottom-moment" he needed to realize, once and for all, how the pills (and not just the Colonel's singleminded focus on the bottom line, not just "too much fame too soon") had changed him. (The Colonel and fame being aggravating factors, yes.)

Why didn't anyone force Elvis to get help? Because you can't force anyone to help themselves, and Elvis' being "The King" didn't help matters much.

The book really demonstrates anecdotally how incredibly indulged Elvis was by everyone around him, and how extreme fame and drugs combined to shelter Elvis and keep him in a fantasy world.

It's a sad end to a man of faith and generosity.

Why is this book out of print? Two reasons:

1) It's painful to read.

2) While author and bodyguard Red doubtless did have roles directing the musical side of Elvis' career, calling Red "the genius behind Elvis' music" is so patently absurd as to further distance the reader, casting doubt not only on the credibility -- but the sanity -- of the authorial voice.

Still, a fascinating portrait, best in combination with a book like Peter Guralnick's more erudite Elvis biography, "Careless Love".

5 out of 5 stars Rock-n-Roll Regicide: The King is Dead,Yet Long Live the King.......2007-08-17

This interesting book was written by the then-fired bodyguard friends of Elvis Presley. After reading this paperback, after some years following his untimely death,i felt that his bodyguards were only trying to save Elvis from his evident self-destruction.Some may say, that this book was a cheap slam against Elvis for relieving the West brothers from their posts,as secretive servants of the king.I surmise that Elvis still had alot of sorrow and anger over the unexpected loss of his mother,Gladys.Elvis died almost eighteen years to the day that her heart stopped. The PDR drugs he misused were only masking the deep feelings of grief he still felt from her absence. The NYC 72 concert and the Aloha 73 concert were the last times the enthralled viewing public saw the best of the legendary Elvis. After his 1973 divorce from Prisella, the last pillar of rational thought crumbled around him.Doctor'Nick',fearing the negative exposure that an arrest against Elvis would bring,he regretfully went along with the King's demend for more pharmacological drugs. For those who think this hasty book was to hurt Elvis, they are wrong. It was written as a last ditch attempt to save the 'King of Rock and Roll', by bringing awareness of his dire plight of abusing legal drugs and hence his bizarre destructive behaviour. Elvis' personal situation was so sheltered that death was a complete shock to all his fans. But,not to those who witnessed his daily lifestyle habits and tried to save the man from himself.

                    Book Description

With the publication of this, the last of 20 titles, Classic Publications' acclaimed Jagdwaffe series reaches its conclusion. The final book in the series could also be considered one of the most interesting as it examines the various types of advanced aircraft with which the Luftwaffe desperately tried to challenge what, by then, was overwhelming Allied air supremacy in the skies over the Reich. While each book in the series can be enjoyed on its own, together the Jagdwaffe collection offers a very authoritative and detailed study of the camouflage and markings of Luftwaffe fighter units, in all theatres, throughout World War II.

The Luftwaffe Colours series wraps up with this stand-alone volume on the major jet and rocket fighters developed by Germany in the Second World War.

The authors, J. Richard Smith and Eddie Creek, had done an excellent job tracing the development and operational use of Messerschmitt's lethal Me 163 and 262 aircraft. While both aircraft had great potential, each aircraft had problems in development; the Me 163 in particular was an inherently dangerous aircraft due to the fuel it used. Though each aircraft achieved some success, the effect they had on the air war was minimal.

As with other volumes in the series, the book is a combination of narrative, including first-hand accounts of flights and combats, dozens of photos including rare color shots and over 20 color profiles by Creek and Tom Tullis.

                    Very nicely done!

                      Book Description

This book reveals the secrets of aerial warfare over Europe during World War II. The Messerschmitt ME 163 "Komet" was the most dangerous production fighter ever built by Germany, and Sgt. E.R. Jones of Stockton, California received the unique credit of jointly shooting down a Komet over Germany in 1944.

Using information written by Sgt. Jones in a tiny diary notebook provided by Sgt. Jones' widow, Mae Jones, and microfilm file material obtained from the U.S. Air Force Historical Research Agency at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama, this book by Doug Brodie is a fascinating account of aerial warfare over Europe during World War II.

Also included are original aerial warfare photos obtained from Henrietta Massey of Jefferson City, Missouri., the widow of Air Force photographer Gerald R. Massey who took photos while flying in U.S. bombers high in the sky over Europe. During the course of his research, Doug Brodie discovered that Massey and Jones flew the same mission on November 2, 1944 in a raid over Mersburg, Germany. One of the highlights in this book is a photograph taken by Massey of a B-17 being shot down in flames during the Mersburg raid.

5 out of 5 stars READ THIS BOOK!.......2007-09-10

Since you've stumbled onto the product page of this rather obscure, out of print book, then you must be interested in one or more of: Aviation, World War II, German WWII strategies/machinery, Rockets/Jets, Courageous men. You MUST read this book. I just finished it, and can't recall when I last stayed up too late so many times reading, or read an entire book in so few sittings and with so much anticipation.

This is a non-fiction work focused on the development, testing, manning and deployment of WWII Germany's Messerschmitt 163B Komet rocket-powered fighter interceptor. The concept of the program: a group of ultra fast fighters stationed at fields along Germany's border could launch on extremely short notice and quickly fly to high altitude to intercept and play havoc with incoming Allied bomber formations. Strike fast, move though the bomber formation at high speed, firing on target, then glide back to base.

A bevy of facts and superlatives regarding the aircraft - At introduction, it was the fastest and fastest-climbing manned aircraft on the planet . . . propelled by a liquid fueled rocket (no oxygen intake involved), it was a self-contained bomb. They could, and did, just BLOW UP . . . once ignited the small but heavy aircraft took off, jettisoned its wheels and flew towards the heavens until fuel was depleted. The then lightweight glider would return to a soft landing on smooth grass via the belly-mounted skid . . . as a fuel-less glider, they were nimble, fast and a joy to fly . . . to return with fuel unspent invited death . . . engine failure usually meant returning with unspent fuel . . . landing the "glider" was a single opportunity event. To muff the "soft landing", or miss the "smooth grass field", invited death . . . no ejection seats, but jettisoning the cockpit cover and jumping out of the moving aircraft was commonplace . . . the rocket fuel "melted" flesh . . . there were fuel tanks located in the cockpit . . . there were dozens and dozens of completed Komets in inventory, without pilots.

To say that this was a "remarkable" or even a "fantastic" story, sells it short as a true story. The real tale of course, is that of the men who flew the 163's. Author Mano Ziegler was one of these, in the program from almost the beginning to the end. His "luck" was unusually strong, and (as I recall from the book) he made it through to the end of the war with only a few broken teeth.

In addition to an unparalled tale of men and machines, the reader is also privy to the author's (as a German military officer) perspective of THE WAR. No animosity is voiced toward to western Allied Forces and the increasingly punishing bombing raids on Germany. Ziegler is self-effacing, factual, generous and has a pretty good sense of humor (perhaps in a German sort of way, and there is no doubt something literally "lost in the translation"). In fact, with the exception of a single superior officer, Zieger speaks positively about all of the persons in the story. The only hint of bitterness is at the time that high command, late in the war, recruits pilots for suicide ramming missions against enemy bombers.

This book is not at all about politics, or really even war. In essence it is about a struggle between men and what was an awesome but very dangerous machine. The casualty toll in this story is incredible and heartbreaking. Regardless of "which side" one may be on, I can't imagine anyone not admiring and cheering on the brave dedicated men whose tales are told in this story.

I don't know if the ME 163 rocket fighter was a good idea or not. I don't know that the author was even sure. It was certainly pushed into deployment too fast (out of necessity). And as when any enemy military advantage becomes apparent, the good ole USA quickly adapts and counters . . . in this case it was P-51 Mustang fighter escorts laying in wait for fuel-less ME-163s as they glided back to base.

Just a SUPERB true story told by an insider and a great story teller. Read this!

5 out of 5 stars Needs to be reprinted.......2007-08-29

This is the true story of the underappreciated heroics of the engineers, builders, technicians and above all the pilots who tested and flew the Me163. This should be a required reference book in all engineering courses, not only for what was done right but also for all the things that were done wrong -- mostly caused by limited resources and time, and not a few stupid bureaucrats. (See also "Slide Rule" by Nevil Schute; the two books should be sold as "Better Together.")
This is a bit of history that deserves a much larger audience.

5 out of 5 stars An incredible book.......2006-05-02

This book gives a pilots' account into the ME-163 Komet - one of the most incredible aircraft ever built. This is not a war story in essence, but a story of the pilots who befriended one another through one of history's darkest chapters. You'll have a hard time putting it down. It's a story of a plane that was 10 years ahead of its time, built by a genius named Dr. Alexander Lippisch. It didn't make a difference in the war but remains one of the most amazing and unique airplanes of all time.

                      5 out of 5 stars Gripping!.......2005-11-11

A co-worker loaned me his paperback English copy around 1990. As a pilot and aviation enthusiast, I found Mano Ziegler's account of flying the Messerschmitt Me 163 Komet fascinating. The tail-less Me 163 was the world's only operational rocket-powered interceptor aircraft. Photos and diagrams in the book were helpful in understanding how the plane worked. The Luftwaffe pilots who flew this tiny machine risked their lives with every test flight, training flight and combat sortie, even more so than Chuck Yeager did when he flew the Bell X-1 through the sound barrier and into the history books. Their rubber-coated flight suits provided only limited protection against the caustic rocket fuel; some pilots died in otherwise survivable crash landings when the fuel system ruptured and sprayed the cockpit. Thanks to Mr. Ziegler for telling about a little-known aspect of aviation history.

5 out of 5 stars first hand experience.......2002-07-04

When I read this book, some 30 years ago -it was translated into several languages, and I must have read either a Dutch or an English translation- two things struck me: the illustrations, made by the writer himself and the story, a real first hand experience. It's told in such a way that you don't want to put it down, you just have to known whether the pilots mentioned will survive this plane. You get to know how the testing was done and just what the hazzards of flying the Me 163 "Komet" were. Quite often it develloped into a real comet, exploding when landed with a bit of both fuels left. The writer manages to bring back those moments in vivid detail.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Information and Photos.......1999-12-22

This is the best book on the subject of Rocket Propelled aircraft in World War 2 I've ever seen. Loads of info and superb photos and diagrams are execellent to say the least. The basic stuff like the Me-163 are covered, as well as some very interesting, not so well-known aircraft. If your interested in the subject, than this book is not to miss. It may be hard to find a copy though cause its old and its one of the more rare volumes in the Ballentines Ilustrated History Of World War 2 series.

Also reccomended: 'German Secret Weapons', 'Allied Secret Weapons'. Both titles are in the series, and they cover many interesting weaponry you won't find anywhere else.

4 out of 5 stars Very interesting look into a unique aspect of aviation........1997-11-05

Apparently now a rare book, but still in a small class of books about this unique and amazing piece of aviation history. Although the Me 163 has since been well covered with better photographs and drawings, the Bachem 349 has still yet to be shown better. In particular, the Russian rocket fighter is shown in the only source I have ever found. A good history of the early work with rocket propelled aircraft. Biplanes with rockets!

It is hard to imagine any form of flight, much less aerial combat, which could be more startling and unique than a rocket fighter. The incredible danger and high fatality rate the test and operational pilots accepted to fly these aircraft is best understood by their comments; there was nothing better.

                      4 out of 5 stars

Interesting account of wartime rocket fighter research

                      .......1997-10-15

Rocket Fighter by William Green is book number twenty in the weapons series of Ballantine's Illustrated History of World War Two. It chronicles the wartime programs of Germany, the Soviet Union, and America to develop fighter aircraft which use a rocket engine as the prime mover. The development teams face extremely difficult design and construction problems in a time when manned atmospheric rocket flight was entirely unexplored, and mnanufacturing techniques were inadequate or did not exist. The account of failures and successes is an exciting story of learning and innovation. Though commercial and military aviation was ultimately revolutionized by turbojets, and not rocket research, which today remains inactive, the aircraft were still major technical accomplishments. That the aircraft with their poorly understood principles were made flyable at all was something of a miracle, resulting from the vision, ambition, and ingenuity of their designers.

The book follows the concept from its first serious consideration prior to World War II through the independent wartime efforts of the three countries mentioned, to Germany's desperate deployment of the Me 163/263. In addion to the better known projects, the author also describes some obscure lines of research, including miniature semi-expendable rocket aircraft in which the pilot lay prone. The results of the limited post-war Soviet and British efforts are also covered. A good memory is needed to follow the activities of the teams and the numerous prototypes as they are created, branch to new lines of development, or are shelved. This book is primarily a historical account, and technical details are not discussed in great depth.

In addition to testing and design work, the reader is told of political elements which had an effect on the progress of the work. Exigencies of war either cause the research to be delayed, or force the dangerous new means of propulsion to be pushed into production before it is ready. With test flights as the only means of evaluation, many brave pioneers are lost in horrific crashes and rocket fuel accidents.

This book is the story of the craft which now only appear in museums. The writing of this Ballantine series is excellent and each book presents its topic in an interesting, thorough and concice format. Those who want to learn about the work which produced this short-lived but spectacular aviation development, will find this enjoyable reading.
