every parent should have this book.......2007-10-11
Attention parents, every parent should be educated about the shots the doctors are pumping into our precious babies. don't be brain washed by what they tell you. read this book and just be opened minded. then watch the doctors face when you start asking them questions regarding the ingredients.
To Paradox.......2007-10-01
This is not a review, but rather a response to the last poster inquiring why the autism rate is soaring in spite of the declining thimerosol (mercury derived preservative) amount in vaccines.
As a mother of a 4 yo son with autism, I believe that autism is a multi-faceted condition. I don't believe my son's autism was caused by mercury, HOWEVER, I do believe that he may have been vaccine injured; due to the fact that he received the Hepatitis B vaccine when he was less than 24 hours old. It is my belief that in genetically predisposed children, bombarding their immature immune systems with a vaccine is PART of the autism puzzle. Think about it...exposing the immature gastointestinal system to solids before it is ready increases the risk of food allergies...wheat, milk, eggs, nut products, etc...similar analogy.
It's not that the vaccines themselves are inherently harmful; but if they are given to a system not ready to adequately handle them, therein lies the problem. The US has the most aggressive vaccination schedule in the WORLD! China has changed their vaccination schedule so as not to vacc any child under the age of two!
Just my 2 cents.
paradox.......2007-09-22
Can anyone tell me why there is less and less mercury in vaccines yet the autism rate is getting higher and higher?
must have for parents.......2007-09-12
i wish i had this book with my first kid. it is now on the list of essentials to share with friends and families. i am not a scholar but this book was easy to understand.
What is the fuss about ?.......2007-09-06
I dont understand why this book got the great reviews it did
I have read several books on vaccinations Dr. Neustaedter's book, Dr. Tenpennys book and done quite a bit of research on the web. This is the first book I had picked up.
My problem with Dr. Cave's book is that its not honest -- its almost silently pro-vaccination. She openly credits vaccines for reduction in diseases while its obvious that that claim is questionable. Also, her 'recommended' list of vaccines is ALMOST every one of them -- except Hep B and Chicken pox. These are the 2 easiest ones to eliminate even by a lay man. you dont need an 'expert' doctor to tell you that. Every thing else she recommends all in a slightly delayed manner (by a few months).
If Dr. Cave really want to tell you what your doctor is not, then there should be more statistics on the incidence of these diseases and the real risks of contracting them. For example : Diptheria , every one knows there have been no cases of it for 50 years in the entire western hemisphere and no cases of wild polio for over 2 decades now. That is information that should be included for each disease before recommending the vaccination finally.
Also, she has no chapters on immune system function or the real harmful devastating effects vaccines are having on some children.
My personal opinion is Dr. Tenpennys books/dvds and Dr. Neustaedters book are far more convincing and useful.

This is EXACTLY what your doctor tells you.......2007-09-13
I found this book to be a regurgitation of what I had already been told by two pediatricians regarding my 4 year olds recently diagnosed asthma. Nothing new here at all. I was surprised that the doctors do not seem to acknowledge the large role diet plays in a condition such as asthma. I am not a doctor, however, even I can see the significant link between diet and health. Since my son's asthma diagnosis a month ago, I have dramatically restructured his diet and began supplementing him with magnesium. Guess what?! My son has shown significant improvement over the past 3 weeks! Even his allergies seem to have improved. I am proud to report my son hasn't taken a single asthma or allergy medication in two weeks. If you are resigned to a life of medication and supporting the multi-million dollar pharmaceutical company's, then this is the book for you.
Hoping for more information I could use at home to help..........2006-03-09
This book is a good book to help define and aid in the understanding in causes of Asthma and different allergies, but I was hoping for more information that I could use at home to help reduce chances for asthma attacks and my son's allergy induced asthma.
For your child's sake, please read this review.......2005-05-26
There is significant evidence that the root cause of many, if not most, cases of asthma (and many allergies as well) is deficiency of magnesium. This fact is discussed in detail by Dr. Carolyn Dean in her excellent book The Miracle of Magnesium. Dr. Dean recommends that all asthma sufferers take supplemental magnesium daily -- 600 mg daily for addults (proportionally less, according to their body weight, for children). People with asthma who follow Dr. Dean's advice about daily magnesium supplementation often improve dramatically even if they have continued to struggle with asthma under other treatments which omit magnesium supplementation. For your child's sake, please read Dr. Dean's important book and follow her advice regarding daily magnesium supplementation. It may well be the most important thing you will ever due to relieve this terrible ailment. By the way, although a variety of magnesium supplements are available, and beneficial, chelated magnesium -- which is readily available in most health food stores -- is the most effective.
New kind of medical book.......2003-12-29
This is a different kind of medical book from any I've ever looked at. The rest are predominantly lists and checklists, and dull as well. This one not only dispenses very helpful advice but gets inside the heads of children who have these conditions, their parents, and explains theory and practice behind the medical specialty itself. Some of the anecdotes about how non-specialists can botch treatment are shocking. Some if it is also quite funny. Also, it's nice to read a book by doctors who still clearly love the practice of medicine and doing good for people, in spite of all the changes that have happened to the profession in recent years. This book should make many lives better and even save some.
Every parent should have this book.......2003-11-12
Excellent reference guide. Every parent who has a child with allergies should have this book. A very valuble resource!

Customer Reviews:
more than just a book for divorcing parents with children.......2000-08-07
I had the adavantage of having ms. Weyburne as my thrapist, so i had the opportunity to know about this book and was very much interested in reading her views on this subject. I was excited because it was exactly what my sister needed at this time. I first bought it for her because she was going through a divorce and was having a hard time dealing with her kids on this subject, but then i noticed in some later chapters, things that seemed to help me understand better my own divorce (though no children were involved). I bought a second copy for myself and gained valuable knowledge about divorce, with or without chilren. I recognized many situations that a person goes through during and after a divorce and was able to use that knowledge to help me get past a few walls I had built around myself. This started with the chapter on taking care of yourself and went through confronting and coping with your feelings, mourning the loss and changing negative thinking habits. Ms. Weyburne is very knowledgable on this subject and used her education and twenty years of experience to write a book that can help parents, going through divorce with children, and also adults that have or are going through a divorce with no children. I was lucky enough to know about the book because she was my therapist, so i am writing this to let others without the same opportunity, to hear about a well written and very insightful book. Thank you Darlene.

The South Pacific campaign of World War II set new standards for savagery in modern warfare. The ground fighting reached a peak of intensity when the U.S. Marines landed at Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands while the Australians repulsed the Japanese advance across New Guinea. Battling jungle rot and malaria, the Australian Army teamed with the U.S. against the Japanese, whose battle ethos demanded they fight until victory or extermination. In Touched by Fire, Eric Bergerud, a professor of military and American history at Lincoln University in San Francisco, restores the campaign to its rightful place of importance as a diabolical struggle for survival in World War II's most heartless terrain.
Customer Reviews:
A superb book with one very irritating flaw.......2007-02-17
If it were not for the one flaw mentioned in the title (and about which more below)this book would have received five stars.
Campaign histories are often impersonal narratives that fail to capture either the strategic importance of events or the personal experiences of the combatants. Those books which do capture the experiences of the combatants are often naive when it comes to strategy. Touched with Fire describes the war in the South Pacific on all levels, personal, tactical, logistic and strategic. It is well written, insightful and easy to read.
Bergerud makes the point that before the campaign in the South Pacific the Japanese were still on the offensive, even despite Midway. By the end of the campaign there was no doubt in any sane military man's mind that Japan would lose the war. Bergerud clearly explains why the Japanese decision to continue the war after their losses in the South Pacific was militarily insane, but also examines why unconditional victory over Japan was desirable and maybe even necessary (and how the same attitudes that made this so contributed to Japan's initial success and eventual failure).
For an American author Bergerud treats the combatants very open handedly, praising the Japanese and Australians for their strengths and not shying away from problems with the US military.
The fact that the author is an American leads me to the flaw in the book, something which might seem minor, but which was a constant source of irritation and grated so badly that it cost Bergerud two stars. The book is about events which happened entirely in the southern hemisphere. Therefore when I encountered references to events happening in summer of 1942 I asked myself, summer 1941/42 or summer 42/43? Luckily I knew enough about the dates involved to realise that it was neither. To my surprise and horror I realised that the author was referring to the northern hemisphere seasons when discussing events that happened in the southern hemisphere! The battles for Guadalcanal and the initial battles for New Guinea did not take place in summer, they were in winter (although traditional European seasons have little meaning in the tropics). I assume that the author knows that the seasons are reversed in the southern hemisphere. Therefore I can only conclude that he made a conscious decision to ignore this fact and to deliberately introduce errors into his work in order to make it more palateable to Americans. This betrays both a contempt for the intellect of his American readers and a contempt for his audience outside America. Neither is acceptable.
It is a shame that such a good book is flawed in this way. This may seem a minor point, but anything which betrays such monumental contempt for the reader has a major negative effect on the enjoyment of a book. It would not take much to correct the references to the seasons or simply replace them with dates if it's perceived that the concept of a round earth is too complex for the target audience (yes I'm being facetious). It would be good if this could be done in any future editions of this otherwise excellent book.
A war of annihilation............2006-11-08
I purchased this book whilst living in the SE Asian tropics and it certainly provided a stark insight into the land battles of New Guinea and the Solomon Islands from mid-1942 until early 1944. Horrific. Australians interested in WW2 in this theatre should certainly pick up this book.
Anyone interested in the historical aspects of these WW2 battles will find the descriptions and weighing up of the armies, the weapons they employed and the horrors of the battlefield they suffered & fought in, to be utterly fascinating.
More so the interviews with surviving combatants are highly entertaining and this book serves as a worthy monument to their exploits in this green hell.
In particular this provides for an insight the brutality of the campaigns covered. The conditions endured by citizen and professional soldiers, and the combat most foul, they engaged in is graphically described. Yet all this takes place in a naturally beautiful environment....
The descriptions by veterans of hand-to-hand combat and degradation provides a stark view of some of the motivations and endurance of individuals under some of the most extreme combat conditions in WW2.
Thoroughly worth reading.
Allied Contributions.......2006-08-01
The contributions of the Australians and New Zealanders in the Pacific War are often understated. This book does much to mitigate that deficit.
Touched by Fire.......2006-07-15
I bought this book, and the companion book, Fire in the Sky by the same author. I bought them becasue my father spent from May 1942 until near the end of the war in the South Pacific. These books are NOT cronological history books, but rather an IN DEPTH discussion of why the US won and why the Japanese lost. Most of the book is taken up with quotes from the veterans who fought the war. Fire in the Sky had a few pages of quote from one of my Dad's friends from the 17th Weather Squadron.
Definitive history, including little-known land actions in the South Pacific.......2006-06-29
Bergerud is magisterial in his approach, utilizing interviews with the participants and diaries as a principal tool for getting readers deep into the action. Highly recommended.
