Book Description

This book is not about discipline, nor problem children. The emphasis is on the training of a child before the need to discipline arises. It is apparent that most parents never attempt to train a child to obey. They wait until the child becomes unbearable and then explode. With proper training, discipline can be reduced to 5% of what many now practice. As you come to understand the difference between training and discipline, you will have a renewed vision for your family—no more raised voices, no contention, no bad attitudes, fewer spankings, a cheerful atmosphere in the home, and total obedience from your children.

A couple, stressed out with the conflict of three young children, after spending the weekend with us and hearing some of these principles, changed their strategy. One week later, they exclaimed, "I can't believe it; we went to a friend's house, and when I told my children to do something, they immediately, without question, obeyed."

These truths are not new, deep insights from the professional world of research, rather, the same principles the Amish use to train their stubborn mules, the same technique God uses to train his children.

1 out of 5 stars This book is Horrible!.......2007-10-15

This book should be pulled from this site! It advocates child abuse plain and simple. The things written in this book made the blood drain from my face and my heart skip a beat. Tonight I will be praying for the children suffering under such "parenting" methods as listed in this book and I will hug my babies a little closer.

5 out of 5 stars PLEASE READ THE BOOK BEFORE REVIEWING, PEOPLE!!.......2007-09-30

This book is great. I was looking for a blog to discuss the Pearl's stuff, because I love it, and I found two or three websites telling people go and write a review of the book....WHEN THEY HAVE NOT EVEN READ IT! From the 30 or so comments I read, the ones that were negative sounded like this..some even admitted to not reading it.

COME ON! Read it, and find out for yourself. It is a great book. Spanking is not abuse, contrary to some people's opinions. However, I would agree, there are people who were abused or have anger issues that should not spank children because they do it in their emotion and not for discipline. But even the Pearls focus on TRAINING and not heavy handed discipline as the key! Discipline alone will not work without training.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book! Chalked full of practical effective advice!.......2007-09-24

This book is wonderful. I know others don't always agree with everything but everything works and nothing is dangerous about it when APPLIED properly. The scriptures are sound and properly used. I've used this book and have two sons (2 & 6) that no one can deny they are the happiest kids they've met. I'm not sure where it began but I've noticed some people have forgotten their grass roots on how their parents applied correction and have become soft and complacent regarding it. I see children crying in Walmart throwing themselves ridiculously & foolishly--crying out for a boundry from their parental guideposts and no one answers. There's no excuse for this kind of behavior from parents or children. Children need correction, just like we did, it shows passion which is love. It shows you care enough to set them straight when they stray. Think about it, when you're in your daily routine headed for failure and someone stops you and gently directs you back on course, doesn't that make you feel good about them and yourself. It should, they cared enough to take time to help you and you didn't make another mistake.
Real life example: A sad and recent prime example of why parents need this book is reflected in the life of my brother. Throughout their son's life, he was never corrected, he went through violent stages of childhood of kicking and biting. No correction just continuous excuses for his behavior & plain meaness. Never given any moral direction or discipline for reinforcement. To make a long story short, now he betrays his own mother with lies and deceit all-the-while befriending my brother's mistress. (I know, Wow) Your children will bring you shame too if you don't train them while you have the chance, moreover, the responsibility.
Society has harvested some of it's untrained, uncorrected and unloved. Thus the historically higher suicide rates, teen pregnacies and dependencies, "looking for love in all the wrong places."
This book is chalked full of practical effective advice and it works. It should be a required parental read.
I noticed the reviewer above disgruntaled remarks regarding the book's recommendation of tugging the infant's hair to get the infant to stop biting while breastfeeding. That's just practical for most people, maybe she would prefer presenting a 500 page essay explaining to the infant "baby has poor behavior and how that hurts mommy when you bite" A simple tug will do... Now, they didn't say pull the baby's hair out! (o: But you shouldn't have to pull yours out either! Remember, Application is everything, use with love always! Never correct while angered! Only correct disobedience, never for lack of knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars How's that working out for ya?.......2007-09-21

Well, my response to the few others that have made negative responses to this book is - so what is it that you do instead that works so well?! I've read the reviews of people who have taken all the Pearls have said out of context to make it look like you should just walk around with a big whip and hit your kids often for no reason. Come on guys!! That is not what it says. READ THE BOOK. If you have all the answers, you don't need this book, but if you are frustrated because you are living in a child-run home, then buy this and apply it. There isn't much out of context that you can do with "Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of correction will drive it far from him." Try it out, it works. My kids are the talk of the town and they love me too - they don't cower in fear. Will your kids stop on a dime when the speeding car comes racing by in front of them? The Pearl kids will!
PS For the lady who got tears in her eyes over pulling the hair of the biting baby - ever been bit by a baby????? Talk about tears in your eyes!! I know one mom who refused to thump the baby and quit breastfeeding in fear of being bitten! I've got a 7 mo old that learned to quit biting and has learned not to touch "no, no" items. Happiest baby you ever saw! If they can remember what their bottle looks like or know a familiar person or blanket, they have the long term memory to remember that biting is counterproductive. If you choose to make it so...

1 out of 5 stars A Guide to Abusing Your Children.......2007-09-16

Another book about how to beat children.

I won't harp on it being awful and terrible and whatnot because at a certain point it's just redundant.

I will say this, most of the "discipline" suggested in this book will land you in jail.

Please don't.

5 out of 5 stars old-fashioned + unconditional love.......2007-07-19

this is a book with old-fashioned values - discipline, politeness, etc.. modern parenting theory could use a look back to some of these values. i am as modern a woman as anyone - but to think through how unloving it is for me to let my kids do whatever they want was really good. we have to be parents, not just friends.
however, in most traditional models (i.e. our grandparents generation) there was a cold distance between parents and children. this book also confronts that shortcomming - making it a well-balanced book.
it's hard for me to get through or respect many parenting books - but i zoomed through this one and drank it all up! i recommend it to all of my friends with young children - even babies!

3 out of 5 stars some important truths..........2007-06-20

... but like many book authors, he takes good points to an extreme, leaving the teaching unbalanced. I totally agree with his basic premise, that today's Christian parenting books are too heavy on discipline and don't teach how to nurture enough. He does a really good job of stating the few basic things every child needs - eye contact, physical touch, focused attention, affirming words. These things fill the child's "emotional tank," therefore avoiding many discipline problems before they come up. He also does a great job of explaining why the marital relationship is of vital importance to a happy home.

However toward the last 1/3 of the book the good teaching was taken to a not-good extreme. He implies that if the child is being obnoxious or ornery it is always the parent's fault for not filling the little darling's emotional tank. On page 114 he gives an example of a child who has always willingly done a task before, but is unwilling now. To the parent who might enforce the request instead of stop and "fill the tank," he states, "If the reason for your child's behavior was legitimate, then you would be the one who should be punished for forcing him or her to perform the task."

Now, this sounds a bit extreme to me. First, there are times when children behave badly because of something that isn't Dad and Mom's fault. We should most certainly nurture our children emotionally, but not cater to each and every bad mood the child has. As the parent we are in charge and at times have every right to expect cooperation whether the child's tank is "full" or not. As an adult I have responsibilities to fulfill and people to submit to whether my tank is full or not. Am I really doing my child a favor to expect nothing from him if he is not feeling 100% full and happy? Do I want to teach a 10 or even 5 year old to expect the world to stop right there and fix it every single time he's unhappy? This takes a basically good teaching to an unrealistic extreme.

But, get the book for its good points - most Christian parent books don't state the nurture aspect as well.

I work in a non-profit. We assist women and families during a crisis pregnancy and early child raising. We have incentive classes to provide practical needs for the women and their babies. We use this book as the text for our parenting class. We have created questions to go along with the chapters. We have between 20 and 30 women enrolled in the class each week. The class lasts 6 weeks. I have purchased over 100 copies of this book over the past year. We feel very strongly about the principles and content of the book. We Are evaluating 2 of his other books to ad to our classes. I highly recommend this book and the values it speaks of.

5 out of 5 stars best parenting book ever.......2005-11-21

I am a family therapist and this is one of the best books I've ever read on parenting, loving your child. Although,I am not a big believer in spanking. But I know many experts would disagree with my views on spanking. Your child is really looking for your love, attention and approval. This is a book for both parents to read! Not just mothers. Dr. Campbell has a great message to fathers. I highly recommend this book to new parents. It's a great book to read when your child is young, as it will help you get off on a strong parenting path.

3 out of 5 stars I expected more..........2005-08-22

Personally I was disappointed that although a chapter was devoted to the discipline of a child, I found no helpful suggestions to the sort and to the extent of discipline that I should mete out, say to a "just stepping out" teenager. Instead of actual examples of discipline, the author went back to his premise that a parent should ensure that the child's emotional tank is filled before disciplining. But then again what is discipline? What kinds of discipline will not sap away a child's idea that he is loved when punishment is meted out? I, a loving mother to my children, and who having read the early chapters of Campbell's book, concluded that I have filled the emotional tanks of my children, would like to know what other areas I could possibly look at to find out how I could discipline my teenage daughter who is in the phase of exerting her own identity and status. What should I do, or not do, so that I will not damage my child's ego or worse, drag her to withdraw into an ill-balanced adult.

I also feel that the chapter on "Appropriate and Inappropriate Love" could be further explored by the author. For example, the author could provide suggestions as to how a daughter could be "weaned off" the closeness with her father without hurting her and without making her withdaw from men in the future.

This book promotes child abuse.

If you follow the advice in this book, you will end up losing your child/ren through child protective services or at the very least seriously harm your child/ren.

5 out of 5 stars Just what I needed.......2007-02-27

With all the confusion concerning raising our children, so much advice, a parent could really mess things up. Chuck Sturgeon uses scriptures to back up his teachings. You could argue with the Bible but I suggest otherwise. My son is 3 and how I wish I could have known about this book and others such as "Protecting your children in dangerous times" by Kelly Klutz and "Angels" by Charles Capps. I would have had the necessary tools in which to have peace in my home. They say a child does not come with a handbook or directions, well I now disagree. We just needed someone who took the time to find out that the Bible is just what God ordered for us and our children. Just speaking the Word to my child, playing music that was created from the Holy Spirit and the discipline that is so much required, my child has shown such improvement. As soon as I slack off of this practice, I can see my son change immediately. Spanking, if done the right way, makes such a difference and once the child realizes that there are consequences to their actions, there are less and less spankings. I encourage that the parents read this book, pray on it and listen to God show you how to exercise his word in your life and your children's lives. Spanking without the Word will be useless and the Word without discipline will be the same results. I should know. I tried it. Also, a consistant schedule that a child can count on helps tremendously. May the reader and their family be Blessed and listen to their inner voice (Holy Spirit) on what is right for their children.

3 out of 5 stars A response to Erica in FL (2 comments below mine).......2006-04-19

While I know that this author is not always right.... I think it is absolutely ridiculous that you would blame every single one of your problems on the author and your mother. You sound very much like you are looking for people to blame, rather than a way out of your issues. My parents spanked me all the way through my childhood, yet I'm doing great now. I'm emotionally stable, healthy, living fear-free, and I'm prospering financially. The same goes for my wife, who was also spanked as a child.
You mention that you have no relationship with God... Is that what you're going to tell Him when you're standing before Him someday? That you lived your whole life on this earth and didn't have a relationship with Him because you were spanked as a child? Don't get me wrong, I'm not mad at you and neither is God... but it's time that you take some responsibility for where you are right now. You can't spend the rest of your life blaming others for where you are spiritually, emotionally, and physically. I've known of people who were molested, beaten, raped, abandoned, verbally abused, etc when they were children.. yet they now take total responsibility for where they are in life. They have an awesome relationship with God and with others, and they are now teaching thousands of other people how to live a victorious life.
Being spanked as a child is no reason to not love and respect your mother. That's crazy. Being spanked as a child also does not justify all of the conditions and issues that you have mentioned.
You are only a decision away from a completely different life. Yes, you must change your thinking. Yes, you must associate with different people. Yes, you must do a lot of other things to change your situation... but it all starts with a decision. And that decision is yours and no one else's. Everything that you'll ever need has already been provided through the finished work of Jesus Christ.

1 out of 5 stars Not loving and NOT Christian........2006-04-14

This book is disgusting and I'm amazed that Amazon would carry it.

It is NOT Christian based discipline. Christ advocated love and kindness not pain and humiliation.

Christians who cling to the verse in Proverbs to justify them striking their children are DENYING the saving power of the Man they claim as their saviour for their sins.

Did Christ not die for your childrens sins? Must the parent beat salvation into their children? NO! Christ died for your childrens sins, that is the only salvation they need. They do not need your disciplin to save them from Hell.

Christ took that punishment for them.

God help you and may He work on your hearts to teach you how to care for your children in a loving and Christ like way.

4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2005-04-29

I have to respectfully disagree with the last writer. This book challenges the parent to be modeling a Christian life before expecting your children to do so and, my favorite, tying heart strings with your children. Filling them first with unconditional love and establishing clear boundaries. I gave it four stars b/c the first article is on spanking, but when you read the whole book, you see that is only in context of a joyful home. In fact, they even say don't using spanking if you're not going to do the other parts. They advocate positive parenting and not dumping your emotional issues on your children. You may not like everything, but you will certainly take away some great practical advice. I also enjoyed the follow up articles in the No Greater Joy Volumes.

I have perused with great joy Jean Lubin's book for young children. As a father, grandfather and great grandfather I found Jean's work to be creative, inventive and imaginitive. A uniique teaching method and tool both for parents and Christian Education teachers. I am certain Jean's book will bless and motivate young children to learn about the Lord Jesus and themselves.

I am nine years old and even though my family is Christian, I didn't get alot of the stuff they tell me about in Sunday school. Now i do a page of Train up a child every night before I go to bed and i am really understanding that Jesus loves me for the first time. My little brother likes it too. This book is fun and great. You should get it.

My kids love this book! They can't put it down! It is so much fun...I am getting it for all my nieces and nephews. Perfect Christmas gift, as it is a daily devotional that starts on January 1st. Finally, an entertaining way to teach young kids the basics of the Bible!

5 out of 5 stars This book is a must read for parents and children........1998-12-22

Combined with whimsical illustrations, Train Up A Child is an invaluable tool for triggering creative and spiritual talents in the developing child. I was particularly taken with the profound simplicity and love which Jean Lubin projected her own experience as a mother and a teacher and practicing Christian. No matter what your religious identity, you will treasure this book and pass it on to special friends and children.

    Book Description

It's tougher than ever to be a teenager these days. Our young people are influenced by everything from divorce and teenage violence to a host of peer pressures that can bombard them daily. More than ever, teens are hungry for-and in need of-sound direction and guidance from their parents. It can be equally as challenging for parents to know how to communicate with their teenagers about such delicate subjects. Through short and concise chapters, Curtis addresses such issues as laying a spiritual foundation for your family, developing self worth within your child, handling outside influences, discipline within the home, handling problem behavior, as well as proper guidance for the young adult.

      Book Description

Train Up a Child explores how private schools in Old Order Amish communities reflect and perpetuate church-community values and identity. Here, Karen M. Johnson-Weiner asserts that the reinforcement of those values among children is imperative to the survival of these communities in the modern world.

Surveying settlements in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York, Johnson-Weiner finds that, although Old Order communities have certain similarities in their codes of conduct, there is no standard Old Order school. She examines the choices each community makes -- about pedagogy, curriculum, textbooks, even school design -- to strengthen religious ideology, preserve the social and linguistic markers of Old Order identity, and protect their own community's beliefs and values from the influence of the dominant society.

In the most comprehensive study of Old Order schools to date, Johnson-Weiner provides valuable insight into how variables such as community size and relationship with other Old Order groups affect the role of these schools in maintaining behavioral norms and in shaping the Old Order's response to modernity.

              Book Description

If a generation is to rise up and call America back to its biblical foundations, it must surely come from the ranks of her home schoolers. But home education is not an end in itself — only a God-ordained means of accomplishing God's purpose in the home, in the heart of a young person, and in society as a whole. This message is for every exhausted parent who needs to be reminded of the beauty and greatness of the home school vision. By Doug Phillips. Compact Disc. Approx. 60 mins.
