2 out of 5 stars Not even healthy!.......2007-09-20

I received this book and was shocked that the recipes aren't even healthy! They use butter, sugar, flour, etc. I guess they mean healthy compared to fast food?

2 out of 5 stars Recipes are so-so!!!!.......2005-05-03

I bought this book when I was pregnant hoping that it would help me eat right. While the recipes might be healthy, the actual recipes itself aren't too tasty. Also, the pictures don't do it justice. I think I found about three recipes that I actually liked in this book. And these three recipes weren't super great. The times I did make them, I made them mostly since they were healthy and not so much for taste. For me, this wasn't the best book of recipes for pregnant women and if I had done it again, I probably wouldn't have purchased this book. My advice for anyone looking to buy this book is that you should go to a bookstore and look through it. That way you can see for yourself whether you would really like the recipes in this book and if this is something you would really want.

Book Description

For every woman who loves her Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy, but hates What to Expect's "Best-Odds" diet ("ice cream is just for special occasions?!"), BAREFOOT IN THE KITCHEN is here. Finally, a cookbook with simple, delicious recipes, inspiration, and humorous advice on surviving pregnancy -- from a mom who's been there.

The first trimester is easy: the Saltine cracker, the indispensable tool for combating nausea. As morning sickness passes and appetites return (and increase¿), recipes reflect cravings for tummy-soothing energy, and include banana-vanilla bean smoothies, blueberry yogurt crunches, and arugula sandwiches. One has to balance health with flavor (aka comfort food), of course, so also included are recipes for Haagen-Daz vanilla swiss almond shakes, steak au poivre, super chili dogs, and melted chocolate-butter toast. In the third trimester, high-protein feasts like seared ahi tuna, garlic-mustard grilled salmon, and a spinach salad with warm mushrooms help prepare the mom-to-be. As the day of labor approaches, lighter fare (who can fit food in there at this point?) such as butternut squash & pear soup, or cool cucumber & honeydew melon puree help soothe that larger-than-life tummy. Each recipe has an ALT (alternative for the incapacitated), especially crucial for midnight cravings when time is of the essence.

With tips on handling strangers with too many opinions and well-meaning husbands without a clue, BAREFOOT IN THE KITCHEN is a must-have for the expecting mother.

2 out of 5 stars A waste of money.......2007-01-08

Here is a sample recipe from the book: put toast in toaster, wait until it pops up, add butter. I wanted real, healthy, hearty, easy recipes and found this book to be a waste of money.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful, funny & delicious!.......2004-01-16

This book is full of delicious recipes for your tummy (in its ever expanding pregnant mode) and tidbits for your funny bone. If you're like most gals, you probably are used to being weight conscious and watching what you eat. We can't function in this society without hearing about the latest diet or food fad. But if you're pregnant, you can relax! Sit down and enjoy FOOD! With fun and zest for life, Ms. Gardner passes on, like secrets from her circle of friends, recipes and stories that you can ENJOY and giggle at while you sit back with your feet up, trying to decide what will satisfy both you and baby. I bought this book for a friend and ended up buying another for myself. It's nice to find a cookbook which celebrates the joy in eating good food while having fun. The hints for hubby and pregancy stories are hilarious. They will make you feel like you are in the company of terrific women, and your hubby will feel like he's not marooned on the strange island of pregnancy. Many of the recipes sound like they'll work great for kids, too. The ones that I've tried are easy and yummy. I especially like the Chocolate Sandwich and the Warm Lentil Salad with Feta Cheese.

4 out of 5 stars you don't have to be pregnant to love it.......2007-10-15

I took this book out of the library when my oldest daughter was pregnant 12 years ago and when she was pregnant three years later I bought my own copy. Long after anyone in the family is expecting I use it because of the good health advice and delicious recipes. Our absolute favorite is the Irish Soda Bread with dried fruit.

4 out of 5 stars Great for all phases of your life!.......2007-08-27

I purchased this book in December of 2005 and am still religiously using it at least once a week. I do agree with another woman that left the comment that the recipes take much longer to make than the estimated times given in the book and that the recipes make much more than the recommended serving size. All in all though this is by far my favorite cook book - I know that we are eating healthy and that we are eating a variety of food groups. I also like expanding my cooking knowledge and using the ingredients that are uncommon!

5 out of 5 stars we love this cookbook.......2006-01-08

We love this cookbook. The nutritional info is great and the recipes are delish. My husband and I like it so much that we use it even when I'm not expecting.

4 out of 5 stars Good Addition to My Cookbook Shelf - Husband Happy Too!.......2005-03-07

THE PREGNANCY COOKBOOK is a good book, but not a great cookbook. It consists of two main sections, the first on nutrition and the second on recipes, plus appendices that list which recipes are particularly rich in each of four key nutrients (iron, folic acid, fiber and calcium). The Nutrition section contains good, readable information on nutrition. Even if you already have a good command of nutritional basics, as I did, this is good material.

The Recipes section is what I bought THE PREGNANCY COOKBOOK for, and what I give mixed reviews to. On the plus side, there are some very good, very nutritious recipes in here, including a number of dishes my husband gives an enthusiastic thumbs-up to. Issues I have with the recipes:
- Some of these recipes took me 1 1/2 - 2 hours to prepare, at least the first time. The time estimate given was nowhere close to that.
- The author's short time estimates for prep time either assume that you already have everything peeled and chopped/sliced or that you prep foods much faster than I do. Perhaps they are based on your having a food processor?
- Many recipes contain ingredients that I cannot easily find in a mainstream grocery store.
- Uncommon ingredients are not always glossed with an explanation, and no substitution is offered. For example, a recipe using pappardelle looked appealing. I had a vague idea that pappardelle was a type of pasta. Googling it confirmed that for me, and also let me know that fettuccine is a workable substitute. Checking at my grocery store, I found that indeed we do not have pappardelle, and I will be trying that recipe with fettuccine.
- Not all recipes are as well written a set of instructions as they could be. For example, starting the water for pasta was listed as step 7 of 8 on one recipe I tried last week. Fortunately, I preread the recipe and realized that needed to be step 1. Another recipe had me scrambling when it told me to do something with "the vegetables," except that it turned out that "the vegetables" did not include the red peppers, which were being reserved for another step.
- Serving sizes seem to be overly generous. Recipes described as providing "four main course servings" offer more like six at my house. I don't mind this a lot, but I have learned to plan for lots of leftovers when using these recipes.
- Sections could have been more clearly labeled visually. Finding the first trimester recipes was easy enough, but the only way to find the low calorie first trimester recipes is to find the end of the section and then flip forwards to look for the page that states that the low cal recipes start there.
- The introduction says that this revised version contains simpler recipes. For me, many of these still seem fairly complex. I use this for a couple of special dishes a week, rather than a source of everyday help. At my house, the pregnant woman is also the cook, so simpler is more of interest to me!

There are some recipes in here that I think are very, very good. If you get THE PREGNANCY COOKBOOK, I recommend trying: potatoes stuffed with spinach and broccoli (p. 195); spaghetti with turkey sausage, red bell peppers, onions and tomatoes (p. 207; my husband loves this); chilled sesame noodles with vegetables (p. 241, another winner with my husband, though we like a less sweet sauce); rigatoni with wild mushroom ragu (p. 244); chicken, broccoli and mushroom stroganoff (p. 247); turkey sausage with white beans, tomatoes and basil (p. 278; we didn't find lean turkey Italian sausage so we use lean turkey sausage and throw in some Italian spices).

As you may be able to guess from that list of recipes, my other comment would be that THE PREGNANCY COOKBOOK has a definite Italian-American slant. There is nothing wrong with that, but you do want to know!

3 out of 5 stars No All Foods Safe--but everything looks delish.......2004-10-18

I looked through this book and while it has some very tasty looking recipies in it, they are no all safe. The goat cheese thing another reviewer brought up is debatable (if it is pasturised or used cooked it should be fine), as is the wine (alcohol does boil off), but the big fish (swordsfish, fresh tuna--or for that matter regular canned tuna more than once a week) that are featured in a number of these recipies are no nos for sure for pregnant women. Mercury poisoning is a VERY serious thing especially in the first trimester, and the big fish are full of it.

That said, if you buy it as an educated pregnant person who knew what to avoid, it looks like it would be great!

3 out of 5 stars Good info, but too gourmet.......2006-09-17

This book has a good informational section at the beginning, but the recipes are a little too gourmet for me The average person will probably agree. While the dishes were very tastey, they were too much of a change from the flavors I'm used to, and there was a little too much involved in cooking them. Too much trouble while pregnant unless you're already used to gourmet cooking.

2 out of 5 stars skymama.......2003-10-22

This book has some good general information on nutrition and such, but lacks in simplicity when it comes to the actual recipes. They are a bit "too" gourmet, and call for items that you would normally not have on hand. I'll tell you what; I am on my second pregnancy right now and I am too hungry to take the time and enegy to cook these recipes!

4 out of 5 stars The Pregnant Gormet.......2003-04-21

I really enjoyed reading the informational section on diet and pregnancy, which outlines things you should and shouldn't eat. I also found that many of the recipes were great. There are recipes that cater to the meat and potato set as well as those who care to be a bit more adventurous, such as spinach and cumin soup (sounds delicious to me). There are recipes for beef, chicken, lamb, fish and vegetarian, plus deserts and salads...I found it all inclusive. I would recommend this book for anyone who is interested in balancing real food with nutrition.

2 out of 5 stars Pretty and colorful but questionable information.......2005-02-14

I would not recommend this book. It is beautiful with lots of pictures and easy to follow recipes, but the ingredients she uses and ages to introduce certain foods make me feel nervous about everything she says. For instance, at 4 months she says to introduce rice cereal and lots of fruits and veggies (including carrots which aren't safe to make at home at this age) but no oatmeal cereal until 6 months. But at 5 months she says to introduce meats, strawberries and COCOA! Who needs to give chocolate to a 5 month old?! Her recipes for this age include usually 4 ingredients plus formula which, with the minimum recommendation of waiting 2 days between new foods and starting solids no earlier than 4 months, seemed a lot to me. At 6 months she says to introduce peanut butter which if introduced too early can set a child up for lifelong, lifethreatening allergic reactions. My one other difficulty with the book is that the author is English and I was unfamiliar with the names of some of the ingredients--what's a swede?

            Book Description

In the last twenty-five years the U.S. military has seen the abolition of women's separate corps, the appointment of women generals, and an unprecedented increase in the ratio of women to men. Also, women are now permitted to serve on combat planes and ships. Despite these developments, most civilians know very little about women in the military.

This collection includes unusual accounts by women on active duty, retired officers, women who have worked for the armed forces in a civilian capacity, and civilian academics. The book offers insights on a variety of pressing issues including minority women, lesbians, combat, the role of gender in weapons design, and the changing mission of the military.

Through personal accounts and commentaries, this book dispels many of the myths about women and the military and explores the reasons for the persistence of misconceptions in the face of increased female participation. This comprehensive effort will be of interest to anyone who wants to know the truth about women in the armed forces and will be a wake-up call to women who feel that the military is irrelevant to them.

This book is phenomenal. As a woman who served in the 82nd Airborne division, this book rings true for me and helps me put my own thoughts about my time served into perspective. There should be a lot more books of this caliber on the market.

              Book Description

In the late 1930s, a number of American women-—especially those allied with various peace and isolationist groups-—protested against the nation's entry into World War II. While their story is fairly well known, Margaret Paton-Walsh reveals a far less familiar story of women who fervently felt that American intervention was absolutely necessary.

Paton-Walsh recounts how the United States became involved in the war, but does so through the eyes of American women who faced it as a necessary evil. Covering the period between 1935 and 1941, she examines how these women functioned as political actors-—even though they were excluded from positions of power—-through activism in women's organizations, informal women's networks, and even male-dominated lobbying groups.

In the "Great Debate" over whether America should enter the war, some women favored aid to the Allies not because they hoped for war but because they hoped aid would forestall more direct U.S. involvement—-and also because they believed war was preferable to a Nazi victory. Paton-Walsh shows that this activism involved some of the most prominent women of their day. Elizabeth Cutter Morrow—-whose son-in-law, Charles Lindbergh, was an isolationist spokesman—-supported the revision of the Neutrality Acts to allow the sale of arms to the Allies and expressed her support in a national radio broadcast. Soon other women joined this debate: Esther Brunauer of the AAUW, journalist Dorothy Thompson, and organizations like the League of Women Voters and National Women's Trade Union League broke from the pacifist tradition to advocate American aid for the Allied cause.

Paton-Walsh shows how these women grasped the implications of the Lend-Lease program for America's entry into the war but supported it nevertheless. By late 1941, the Women's Division of the Fight for Freedom Committee had been established; no longer merely advocating aid to Britain to keep American boys out of battle, this organization supported direct American involvement in the war as a means of stopping Nazi oppression.

While most historians have focused on women's pacifism, Paton-Walsh connects women more directly to world events and shows how those interventionists reformulated maternalist ideas to justify and explain their beliefs. Our War Too is a story of American women trying to reconcile the irreconcilable, to preserve both their principles and their peace. It expands our understanding of women as political actors and thinkers about foreign policy as it sheds new light on American public opinion over the build-up to the war.
