Great ABC's and twin book!.......2005-11-17
I got this for my twin daycare girls. They loved it. I loved that it had both the Capital and lowercase letter. Their mom loved that it a frame in the back for their picture. T Is for Twins: An ABC Book is a great way to celebrate being a twin for young kids.
F is for Fun.......2005-07-08
This kids book has great real-life pictures of twins along with fun alliterative ABC words with each one. Would be great for exploring the pictures with toddler twins or learning to read with older kiddos. The pictures aren't quite colorful enough to catch an infant's attention yet.
Nice to see all sorts of twins.......2005-03-07
This book is nice because it has pictures of all sorts of twins. All races, all combinations, all different ages (10 and younger I'd say).
Oxymoron.......2004-11-17
This book is not a typical ABC book. For example, M is for multiple, O is for opportunity, and X is for excitement. Most of the words represent concepts and not enough action words and nouns. The age range is 2-8 years old but an 8 year old would not be interested in an ABC book with no plot. On the other hand, a two year old would be hard pressed to understand the content. Whatever happened to monkey, owl and xylophone?

A Glorious Book!.......2004-12-17
This a Wonderful, Charming book -- a perfect children's book with wonderful drawings and text. Poinsetta has many brothers and sisters, and all she wants is a quiet place to read. All her favorite spots, from the window seat with the "buttery leather," to the rock in the yard are occupied with a sibling. As the story continues, Poinsetta discovers the little things that make her happy, and then how much her family means to her. Look for another book about Poinsetta and her family, "Poinsetta and the Firefighters."
Our family loved this book so much that we ended up buying a copy -- too bad the hard cover is not in print!
Completely Quotable.......2004-03-24
This is a charming book to read aloud to children...as much fun for the adult as for the child. It reminds me of Where the Wild Things Are in its use of language- every line is quotable. I am, in the words of Poinsettia herself, "a pig in bliss", every time I read this gem.
A Wonderful Read-Aloud Book.......2000-03-27
Poinsettia wants to curl up with her favorite book but all of the best places are being used by her many brothers and sisters. She thinks there is not enough room in their house until she is left home alone all day. By the time everyone returns, Poinsettia has decided her family and their house is just right. The author, Felicia Bond, has created charming illustrations and amusing characters. She uses wonderfully vivid description, "If the sun was coming in the window just right, it would spread like warm butter across the pages of her book." At 32 pages it would be an excellant book for reading aloud to younger children.
Book Description
The fascination with twins is as old as time. This interest runs the gamut from celebrities and politicians to family members and historical figures. Twins share a strong and powerful bond that neither time nor distance seems to shake. With this book, twins, or anyone who knows twins, will gain a greater understanding of the special relationship two people have when they have shared the same womb.
Customer Reviews:
The perfect gift book .......2006-02-07
I actully purchased two copies of this book -- one for myself and one for my friend who was having twins. I thought this book was the perfect read for anyone who was about to have twins in their family. It was not a heavy research book, like Nancy Segal's Entwined Lives (which was excellent, by the way). It was more of a charming compilation of quotes and stories by twins about being twins. There were so many questions that you wouldn't actually have the nerve to ask twins, about romance or how their parents treated them, that were answered. I think anyone who considers buying this book should have their expectations set. It is not full of pure scientific research, it's all qualitative research., meaning face-to-face interviews. The stories are true. You hear about twins having similar pain or coincidental life experiences. This book has a lot of examples of each. You hear things about "good twin, bad twin." In this book, parents really do label their kids like that. I think one of the most important messages in this book is that we all should recognize twins as individauls and not as one person. I think we should all be aware also of how a twin must feel when the other twin dies. This, too, is covered in the book from their viewpoints. It is a fun-to-read book that also opens eyes. It would make the pertfect baby shower gift. I enjoyed it very much.
A great disappointment.......2005-10-29
Married to an identical twin I have always been fascinated by their unique bond and thought this book would be interesting. Unfortunately, this book sheds absolutely no light on anything about twins and is very frustrating and very boring to read. Kohl jumps around continuously with no more than one paragraph devoted to discussion of each incident she reports. Her work is shallow and has absolutely no scientific basis or research behind it -- neither hers nor anyone elses whom she might have chosen to reference but does not. Her explanations have no more depth than a conversation with a stranger on a bus. She is at best a reporter of snipets of conversation that she gathered at a twins convention. This book was not worth the money and would only be useful to someone who has never encountered, known or even heard about twins. I was greatly disappointed.
For the twin curious, this may be an amusing book . . . .......2005-03-29
but for anyone close to a twin (or even a twin) this book is very vague. The book glazes over the topics in a twins life that truly make them unique and repeats the same things throughout. There are many other aspects of the twin bond that are not even approached by this author. Though I must admit, I was very impressed by the fact that the mother of 6 year old twins was brave enough to venture into the area of the twinless twins, a subject that many twins dare not think about out of fear of being the remaining twin. Approaching this topic and allowing the reader the opportunity to broach a subject that will be life altering for half of the worlds twins in itself is a good reason to read this book. Probably the only good reason. Overall, the book was a difficult read because of the repetition and topic hopping back and forth.
Real insight into twins - buy this book.......2004-12-31
I really, really liked this book for a number of reasons. First, I have never seen a book like this about twins. These are personal stories from real people. Second, it's fun. This book answers a lot of the questions I know most people are too embarrased to ask. Third, it's not a heavy book like some on the market today. And last, it's a great book to pass around or give as a gift. My wife says it is the perfect baby shower gift for an expecting mother of twins. I am a twin. I am a critic. I really liked this book!
Excellent book!.......2004-12-31
This is a terrific book. It gives real-life examples of what twins themselves really think about being a twin. It is a fun and easy read of which I enjoyed to no end. I have purchased this book as a gift for twins, parents of twins, and even teachers. I think everyone should read this book to truly understand what it's like to be a twin. Loved it.

Book Description
Poinsettia can't believe her ears -- she's finally getting a room of her own! Yet once night falls, and her new room is dark, Poinsettia is lonely and scared. Radiators clank, stairs creak, branches scratch, and something thumps. She can't wait for morning to arrive. But when she sees a bright light shining outside her window in the middle of the night, Poinsettia's quick thinking saves her neighborhood, and, with the help of the firefighters, she realizes that the night isn't so scary after all.

Poinsettia is a lovable little pig!.......2001-12-05
I found this book in the classroom library of a fellow teacher, and was thrilled as I had just finished a unit on "family" and used Poinsettia and her Family, by Felicia Bond. My preschoolers LOVED this book! When I borrowed and read this title, we fell in love with it as well!
My son LOVES this book!.......1998-07-17
This is the first "long" book my 2 year old has actually wanted to read. And we read it several times each day. The pictures are great and my son seems to relate to the storyline. A must read for toddlers!
Book Description
When The Sibling Bond was first published, the word sibling was almost synonymous with the word rivalry. But Stephen Bank and Michael Kahn changed all that with this pathbreaking book, which provides a rare glimpse into the inner lives of siblings and explores their unique and enduring relationships.
Updated with a new introduction by the authors, this anniversary edition shows the sibling relationship as a distinctive emotional, passionate, painful, and solacing power that shapes who we are and who we become. The relationships among brothers and sisters are infinitely varied-a sibling can be one's worst enemy or closest companion. Though their love or hate, envy or compassion, and closeness or rivalry are formed in childhood, these bonds last throughout life, creating character and affecting behavior in numerous situations. Strangely, this profound attachment-second only to the parent-child bond-was rarely studied or understood until recently, perhaps because the feelings siblings have about each other are usually both intense and secret. Bank and Kahn chart this unknown territory, offering a theory of the ways in which siblings attach, create each other's identities, and affect the course of each other's lives. Illustrated with poignant portraits of brothers and sisters in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, this book provides a profound understanding of these complex and enduring relationships, examining the influence of childhood intimacy, parental behavior, family turmoil, birth order, and gender.
Based on more than twenty years of research and clinical evidence, The Sibling Bond fifteenth anniversary edition brings fresh insight to important clinical and theoretical issues, including attachment theory, the development of the self, and the emergence of sexual identity. While Bank and Kahn demonstrate the implications of their findings for both individual and family therapy, they also give readers a vivid opportunity to recognize and reflect on their own sibling relationships.

Book Description
Stories about siblings abound in literature, drama, comedy, biography, and history. We rarely talk about our own siblings without emotion, whether with love and gratitude, or exasperation, bitterness, anger and hate. Nevertheless, the subject of what it is to be and to have a sibling is one that has been ignored by psychiatrists, psychologists and therapists.
In
My Dearest Enemy, My Dangerous Friend, Dorothy Rowe presents a radically new way of thinking about siblings that unites the many apparently contradictory aspects of these complex relationships. This helps us to recognise the various experiences involved in sibling relationships as a result of the fundamental drive for survival and validation, enabling us to reach a deeper understanding of our siblings and ourselves.
If you have a sibling, or you are bringing up siblings, or, as an only child, you want to know what youÂ're missing, this is the book for you.
Amazon.com
Journalist Merrell, drawing on interviews with adult siblings as well as research from leading psychologists and social scientists, reveals that our sibling relationships that were determined in childhood influence our lives in often unsuspected and startling ways. No matter what kind of relationship we now have with our siblings, our histories with them exert a profound effect on our current relationships with lovers, friends, coworkers, even our own children. Understanding that bond can give us fresh insights into the adults we have become.
Book Description
A compelling exploration of "accidentally bonded" brothers and sisters and how this relationship profoundly affects adult lives, this book raises tantalizing questions about how future loves, friendships, and relationships with co-workers are guided by past relationships with brothers and sisters.
Customer Reviews:
interesting perspective on siblings.......1996-05-28
This book gave me much to think about how I relate to my
adult sisters. The stories of the siblings told by the
siblings are well-written by Susan Scarf Merrell. I look
forward to her next book.
Book Description
"A fascinating and informative read."
*The Boston Globe
"A RICH SOURCE OF FASCINATING MATERIAL about the complex realities of siblinghood and a valuable commentary on the impact that these little-studied relationships have upon our lives."
*The New Republic
"Many books have attempted to tackle the complex theme of sibling connection. But rather than look at the minutae of these relationships, journalist Susan Scarf Merrell examines the big issues that all siblings wrestle with in their own unique ways *in particular the Three Cs: Competition, Cooperation, and Comparison. What she discovered was that no matter what kind of relationship we now have with our siblings *close or distant, loving or hostile *our histories with them exert a profound effect on our current relationship with lovers, friends, coworkers, and our own children. Drawing on the most current research; the work of psychologists, psychiatrists, and family experts; and stories from brothers and sisters themselves, Merrell illustrates that through siblings, we come to know both the worst and the very best that lurks within each of us.
"Susan Merrell brilliantly illuminates how the peculiar mix of biology, history, and intimacy makes our attachments to siblings so essential to knowing ourselves."
*Mary Kay Blakely
Author of American Mom
Customer Reviews:
Descriptive and informative.......1999-11-28
This book was written by a journalist who interviewed all the siblings of several families. The descriptions of the people that she met were well-drawn. The author also outlined some of the concepts that have been put forth by psychologists studying sibling relationships and character development. These were interesting, and went beyond the most usual system of birth order characterization.
My intent in reading this book was to gain some insight on some pernicious troubles that persevere in my relationships with my own siblings. This book didn't seem very helpful in that light. A few of the relationships had some undercurrents, or outright problems, but there wasn't a lot of narrative about solving the problems. The problematic relationships seemed to be glossed over by the subjects themselves, so that there wasn't even any material that gave me a chance to see problems similar to my own from the other perspective.

Book Description
More than any previous generation, baby boomers have questioned the value of the family bond. They've sought psychotherapy, attended 12-step meetings, and analyzed their parents' limitations. In this age of psychological awareness, is family closeness a thing of the past? Writer Lisa Braver Moss found that while closeness means different things to different people, family relationships are very much alive and often profoundly significant in adult children's lives. Celebrating Family examines what makes a "close family." The book explores how acceptance of foibles, awareness of mortality, common projects, traditions, and even dumb jokes can keep us together despite geographical and emotional distance. How do we handle conflict with family in a positive way? How can family role changes make us closer? Why do we often reconnect with parents and siblings when we have children of our own? Celebrating Family looks at all these topics and more.
Customer Reviews:
REALLY OPENED MY EYES!.......1999-12-02
This book was so honest and warm - it acknowledges the problems families have, but also talks about how and why we continue to have relationships with our parents and siblings - in spite of it all!
Poignant reminder that in family bonds are our own seeds.......1999-04-13
I liked this book for its quiet yet consistent assertion that "happy" families can be as varied as the individuals who comprise them - that "family" can be a changing dynamic as opposed to set mould into which we must reluctantly "squeeze" ourselves on occasion. I also liked the underlying (i.e., not in-your-face) theme which suggested the many ways in which we are fundamentally alike, despite and/or because of family circumstances. As such, there were certain "characters" I didn't want to let go of; I wanted to know what happened next! Yet it's a satifying read in and unto itself.

Book Description
The image of the naval sailor is that of an enigmatic but compelling figure, a globe-trotting adventurer, swaggering and irresponsible in port but swift to flex the national muscle at sea and beyond. Appealing as this popular image may be, scant effort has been expended to reveal the truth behind the stereotype.
Thanks to Christopher McKee's groundbreaking work, it is now possible to hear from sailors themselves--in this case, those who served in Great Britain's Royal Navy during the first half of the twentieth century. McKee has scoured sailors' unpublished diaries, letters, memoirs, and oral interviews to uncover the lives and secret thoughts of British men of the lower deck. From working-class childhoods teetering on the edge of poverty to the hardships of finding civilian employment after leaving the navy; from sexual initiation in the brothels of Oran and Alexandria to the terror of battle, the former sailors speak with candor about all aspects of naval life: the harsh discipline and deep comradeship, the shipboard homoeroticism, the pleasures and temptations of world travel, and the responsibilities of marriage and family.
McKee has shaped the first authentic model of the naval enlisted experience, an account not crafted by officers or civilian reformers but deftly told in the sailors' own voices. The result is a poignant and complex portrait of lower-deck lives.
