Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars The title is misleading.......2002-08-07

The title of the book and its description here made me think the book would be relevant to all cognitive disabilities. However, the bulk of the book is about Down syndrome. The anecdotes are about people with Down syndrome and information about reproduction, etc. is specific to Down syndrome. Also, although the anecdotes kind of give you a warm fuzzy feeling, there is not a whole lot of practical information about teaching your child anything related to sexuality, dating, the birds and the bees, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, practical, funny.......2000-03-23

This book is a gem. The combined efforts of Melberg Schwier and Hingsburger have produced a lively resource that parents of a son or daughter at any age or with any kind of disability will treasure. It contains not only practical information about sexuality and sexual development, but is humourous and moving. The first-person accounts by parents and by people with disabilities sprinkled throughout the book are a creative way for parents to share ideas, strategies, worries with one another. The stories of people with disabilities give us all some hope for humanity. An excellent effort and a treasure to have.

    Book Description

Practical parenting ideas for kids from ages 13 to 19

Helping teenagers navigate the rocky years between childhood and adulthood has always been a parenting challenge—a challenge that has only grown more difficult in today's fast-paced society. Noted parenting author and psychologist James Windell knows teens. He interacts with them every day. In this book, he offers exercises and practical ideas on how parents can raise a well-adjusted teenager with a solid chance for a successful life. Unlike so many books on parenting and teens that focus on discipline, this book emphasizes the importance of goal-setting, communication, and the development of social skills during the teen years. It reveals how to develop teens' emotional intelligence by demonstrating to them how they can handle their own emotions and respond constructively to the emotions of others.

James Windell, MA (Detroit, MI), is a juvenile court psychologist. He is the author of Children Who Say No When You Want Them to Say Yes and Eight Weeks to a Well-Behaved Child. Windell has appeared on CNN and Donahue, and his work has appeared in many national newspapers and magazines, including Jane Brody's column in the New York Times.

With this knowledge, classrooms can celebrate the gifts of every student and teachers can facilitate a sense of connectedness with the group.

Drawing from Howard Gardner’s landmark work, the authors offer more than a dozen activities specifically tailored to each of the eight multiple intelligences, for a total of 174 classroom activities. Each activity serves as a guide to developing learning strategies in the classroom and fostering relationships with students based on their individual strengths.

Easy-to-understand directions as well as suggestions for journal entries and discussion starters make this a powerful tool for the teacher who wants to bring out the best in every student. All activities are classroom tested and geared to a range of age groups. Common household and classroom supplies are used whenever materials are needed.

This time-saving book is organized into eight chapters, each focusing on one of the Multiple Intelligences. In addition, Life Habit activities are presented for specific grade levels.

      Multiple Intelligences:

This is an essential resource for busy teachers who want to bring out the best in every student by putting Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences into practice.

4 out of 5 stars Great book written by a X-ian.......2005-09-05

This is a great book. It has 700 questions and at least 600 are very interesting and I will use them with my firends and students. Becuase of seperation of church and state (and thank God there is), I will never ask them the silly religious questions, but besides the fact it has religous questions (all X-ian mind you, nothing about favorite religion or any other religion), it's still good. I would recommend it to thinking more about yourself!, getting to know someone else better! getting them to know themselfs better! or simply starting conversation! I hope you like it if you buy it. If you are a believer, you'll probably will like it more. Lastly, hope this review didn't offend anyone, just a point of view from a solid agnositc.

This book is so packed with wonderfully clever ideas of how to share your life with your kids, teach them needed skills while going through your day, and enjoying time together, not viewing the chores as drudgery or unpleasant tasks , but fun learning experiences.

Bravo to Deborah Carroll for not only writing a how-to parent manual that works (They always say there's not a manual to tell you how to parent.), but also for her refreshing viewpoint in treating her kids with respect and fundamentally Being a Parent, Teacher, Guide, while seeming just to be a shopper, a mom, a friend.

              Book Description

Neale Godfrey's Money Doesn't Grow on Trees flew to the top of the bestseller list by helping parents teach their kids the value and uses of money. In her latest national bestseller, A Penny Saved, Godfrey builds on those basic concepts -- for preschoolers through teenagers -- and gives parents a concrete structure to teach values and essential life skills.

Parents want their children to grow up with healthy self-esteem, sound judgment, self-discipline, and the ability to take care of themselves in an uncertain world. They want their children to learn the positive lessons of honesty, responsibility, cooperation, and ethical behavior. By teaching children to understand what money is, how to use it, and what it can -- and can't -- do, parents prepare their children for life in the real world.

Worksheets, quizzes, teaching games, and age-appropriate exercises give kids hands-on opportunities to hone their practical skills.

              2 out of 5 stars Too Difficult a System.......2002-08-23

Although there is some interesting, useful ad fun tips (the Need v. Want game is great), the whole system is too difficult for a working family to use. I'm sorry, but having a 6-year-old pay "taxes" is over the deep end. And so is paying interest on your child's savings jar. (That's what banks are for.)

4 out of 5 stars Great advice for those of us who weren't taught early!.......1999-10-01

This book offered some new ideas for teaching my children about money and the significance of earning, saving, and spending. Ms. Godfrey does get a little carried away with the "jar" system (there would be about 30 in my house!), but her point is well taken. I really liked the part about teaching children to research purchases and costs of living, and looking at debt and financial responsiblities as an overall, long-term picture.

This book tells of the July 1943 bombing of Hamburg, Germany. Many graphic details are provided. For instance, did you know that the firestorm is a type of artificial cyclone. Its inrushing winds are so forceful that trees can be uprooted.
