Customer Reviews:
best book i've ever read.......2007-04-20
On September 17, 1978, Dannion Brinkley was electrocuted through his telephone while talking to his friend Tom and was instantly dead. 28 minutes later he was revived in the morgue. And had a life story to tell the world.
As i was reading this book i was drawn to it due to all of the premonitions Dannion Brinkley had made. Everything that Dannion had said came true. he was right about demoralized countries, strife and hatred in the holy lands, nuclear destruction, enviromental religion, China and Russia battling, economic earthquakes and desert storm, technology of the new age and viruses, and biological warfare.
Dannion became a very spiritual person after meeting with the Higher Beings. He had a mission in life, and his mission in life was to make spiritual centers for people around the world. This was the best book i've ever read and i do not normally read. It took alot for me to finish this book, so in my mind if a book can keep me interested than it is good to me.
A source of great comfort.......2007-04-13
It takes a very special kind of book for me to want to read something that I've already read, but "Saved By the Light" was, and remains, quite the exception.
I read this book in the mid-1990s at a very down point in my life: I was freshly graduated from high school and had absolutely zero idea what was going on in my life, let alone know what I wanted to do with it. I had just completed 13 years of Catholic school (K-12) and I wanted to find a spiritual, as opposed to religious, path for my life. I wanted to think for myself as opposed to reciting and believing what other people told me to say and believe my entire life, and I was not satisfied with organized religious dogma in the least.
I got quite the shock when I read Dannion's debut book for the first time, mostly because it shattered everything I had ever been taught - and more.
I had always believed in an afterlife from an early age, but I had a hard time digesting the fire and brimstone scenario painted by organized religion (especially by some Protestant denominations!). Dannion's experience not only proved there *is* life after death, but that it's not the work of the "devil" or evil spirits (which, in and of itself, is one of the most ignorant things I've ever read and/or heard.) It's not about being "judged" for every little wrong (or "sin") you committed in your earthly life, nor is it about being an angel with wings and a halo, playing the harp on clouds.
Instead, Dannion's experience really made me think about the way I treat other people, hence having to face that life review - where you experience what the other person was feeling and where you judge yourself. That made a lot more sense to me than being told that, because I was human, that I was full of "sin" and destined to make tons of mistakes along the way. But, despite that I'm not perfect, I had only one lifetime to get everything right and, if I didn't, I was going to burn in this horrible place forever. (And then people wonder why so many folks are walking around with inferiority complexes these days!)
Dannion's afterlife journey gave me great comfort. I can't really fully explain the feelings his book brought to light within me (just as he couldn't put words to some of the feelings he felt during his NDE - near-death experience), but the vast majority of what he conveyed in his book just rang true with me. The majority of the book was one "a-ha!" moment after the other.
"Saved By the Light" started me on a quest at my local library to read nearly every book they had on the topics of NDEs and spirit communication. I'm fascinated by the fact that the veil between the spiritual and material worlds gets thinner every day it seems. I'm also fascinated by the almost exact details that people around the world have had during their NDEs and the fact that it gets harder for the naysayers to discredit the myriad of peoples' NDEs as being either "mass psychosis" or "dreams." (If that's the case, then people from all over the world have done a great job of giving almost exact details of NDEs, and that's a hell of a feat considering those people don't even know each other.)
In all, it was refreshing to see someone like Dannion, who was so involved with US intelligence and who murdered in the name of "patriotism" see the error of his ways firsthand and now make a positive difference for people. One can't help but notice the glow in his author picture on the back inside of the dust jacket.
But, despite his past, his book was the first book that I ever read in my life that truly made a difference in my thinking and how I acted. Thanks for sharing your amazing story, Dannion! - Donna Di Giacomo
incredible story.......2007-03-04
What if the meanest and most hatefull bully from high school had a terrible accident and suffered horribly for many years in the flesh to pay for his bad actions? What if, with that, he gained incredible knowledge from heaven, great spiritual gifts, had a second chance and became one the kindest persons you know?
That's the story you will find in the book. There are also some interesting prophecies he makes in the book based on the information he supposedly gained in the other side, but quite frankly that was of a lesser interest to me.
indepth.......2007-02-02
I believe this book is worth reading for anyone. It gives anyone who wonders if there is something beyond death or those who worry about death a great deal of faith to not be scared of it. It gives great account of dannion brinkleys near death expiriences and also tells about many other cases of near death. Great book , i suggest ever one read this book.
Best Near-Death Experience Report I've Ever Read.......2006-11-14
I have read many first-person accounts of near-death experiences. And Dannion Brinkley's is by far the most complete, both because he spent a longer time out of his body than most and because his NDE caused a profound change in his personality and, therefore, a 180-degree turnaround in his behavior toward others. His description of the life review he conducted on his first 28 years of physical existence was a true "ahah" moment for me.
Brinkley describes an intense review which awaits us all, conducted by the Spirit Self we are and not a father sky-god on a throne before us. He tells us we will feel the happiness and love we have given to some during our physical journey, as well as the pain we have inflicted upon others. No reward of an eternal heaven for the "good" among us. No reward of an eternal hell for the "evil." But an opportunity to truly "reap what we've sown" as we feel the emotions of souls whose physical lives have been touched by ours. A must-read for everyone who yearns for a peek at what awaits us after we've discarded our bodies. Especially instructive for those who have rejected Christianity's fear-based heaven/hell doctines but have nothing with which to replace those rejected teachings.

An Awesome Read.......2007-05-14
I usually am not one to leisurely read. However 'He's Fine but Is He Saved' captivated me and had my attention from beginning to end. Kimberly Brooks did an excellent job including comedy, the unexpected and most of all, spiritual inspiration. I definitely recommend this novel.

He's Fine...But is He Saved is an impressive debut novel for author Kimberley Brooks. I enjoyed reading this book. This book captivated me from the beginning to the end. Sandy was young and naive, but in her defense, some of the game being run on her would've had some mature Christians succumbing to temptation. As for Michelle, it was evident that her patience was being tried with Sandy. However, Michelle turned out to be a good friend. Elizabeth dealt with issues that a lot of women are faced with...interceding for their single mother and dealing with abandonment from their father. I admired Elizabeth's strength, courage and conviction. Overall, this was an entertaining story, and I recommend it.
He's FINE...But Is He SAVED?.......2007-03-07
The three girls in, "He's FINE...But Is He SAVED?" seemed like they were friends of mine. When I wasn't reading the book, I wondered what were the girls up to?
I wanted to stop what I was doing and read the whole book, because it's that interesting, real and entertaining. This book was great reading, it even had me crying on one part.
The book's characters are believable and the girls will keep you reading until you finish the whole book.

I found this book very easy to read and easy to get caught up in. The more I read, I found myself in the pages of this book. I loved it!!! I'm sure to pass this one on to my girlfriends!

Book Description
Broken, smashed and stomped in the mud. That's how Charlotte Bell's heart ended up the last time she let her emotions heat up on a nanny assignment. So taking a new position in frigid Iceland, working for Ambassador Edgar Rawlings, might be just what Charlotte needs in order to heal up--and chill out. This time, she's determined to be intrepid and courageous. She's even read all fifty-six original Nancy Drew books in preparation. Unfortunately, she's neglected to find out anything about Iceland or to look into the background of her oddly compelling employer.
When Charlotte stumbles onto the trail of a mystery that only she can solve, she'll need every shred of Nancy's wisdom to keep her life--and her heart--safe!

Not recommended.......2007-10-13
I can't recommend this book at all. The characters weren't believable or likeable, the plot (what there was of it) was silly, and the ending was really unsatisfying.
Nancy Drew would not read this book.......2007-08-14
It felt like every other word coming from Charlotte Bell was, "What would Nancy Drew do?" This phrase was used so much in the book I now hate Nancy Drew just a little. I would pass on this book unless you love hearing over and over "What would Nancy Drew do? What would Nancy Drew do? What would Nancy Drew do? What would Nancy Drew do? What would Nancy Drew do? What would Nancy Drew do? What would Nancy Drew do? What would Nancy Drew do?" Think for yourself!!!!
Can I give it zero stars??.......2007-07-31
There is no sugar coating this. It is simply the worst book I have ever read. The writing is insipid, the characters unbelievable and unsympathetic, the plot ridiculous. It was a complete waste of time and the only reason I finished it (yes, I did) was to see if it could possibly get any worse than it started out (yes, it did). If this is what is being published these days by Red Dress Ink, I can't even imagine what's being turned down. I love a good "single gal finding herself" story as much as anyone. I have read a great number of them. The difference between the good ones and this one is that the good ones have realistic situations and realistic characters who react realistically to the situations they find themselves in. This one was unrealistic from the start. What 23 year old nanny (who grew up in Manhattan in the 90's, no less) would have an affair with her boss (who's an ambassador -- we never find out which country and why, frankly, he's not living in that country but Manhattan -- ridiculous!!) that was limited to secret meetings from 1-4pm on Satuday afternoons (because it's the only time ALL WEEK that she has off -- ridiculous!!) and be surprised when he won't leave his wife to marry her!! It gets worse from there. Use your imagination, I promise it's way beyond anything you can dream up -- If this was supposed to be ironic or satirical, I totally missed it, maybe due to the stilted dialogue (which actually included multiple conversations with a cat who responded "meow" in discussions that actually extended beyond 2 sentences) and personalities of the characters (too many examples to possibly pick out just one).
Just skip it -- Trust me.
Fun, unique & a good story.......2007-05-07
I had a blast reading this book. It's a page turner. What was interesting and unique was that the setting took place in Iceland (nothing I've ever read before). I enjoyed the main character's (Charlotte) determination and bravery to move forward with her life despite her hardships. Her attitude and feelings were so well written, I felt like I was in Charlotte's head. It ended in an unpredictable way, which is so much better than "the usual." If there was a downside it was that it took me only a day to read the book (I couldn't put it down).
Check Reality on Another Planet!.......2007-03-31
Holy smokes was this bad! I was okay puttering through the first two-thirds of the book, but then we took a left turn and left the realms of Earth and went to some parallel universe where several very Weird Things happen in the space of a weekend. I can hardly describe the plot to people due to the gales of laughter! What a let down after such an awesome title...
Customer Reviews:
Easy, fun read.......2007-09-13
Fast read. Interesting characters. Pretty predictable ending but it was a happy one. Better than watching tv. No violence, foul language or gratuitous sex. Humorous and intelligent.
Fantastic read.......2007-08-24
Being from the Boston area myself this book truly is a wonderful and accurate ride through the Boston area. Men and women will find something in this because this isn't "chic lit" it's a good story. Abigail works hard to get what she wants and she gets it, no down and out failure to be found. The dialogue is a bit week at times but the narrative makes up for that. Unlike other books, this story does not end where you think it ends, highly recommended.
A Treasure.......2007-08-05
Very well written, warm, and humorous novel which you will treasure as the treasures are revealed to you.
Silly first person.......2007-07-09
This book came recommended highly. I liked the overall plot and premise, but the narrator was an annoying character and the first person style silly.
Vintage Mameve Medwed.......2007-06-26
I read this book over a year ago, and had forgotten to write a review. No matter. The book has stayed with me all this time. Medwed has the extraordinary ability to write believeably about love and does so in an equally believeable comic manner. Jane Austen fans, Barbara Pym fans, this is for you. "How Elizabeth Barrett Browning Saved My Life" is in the grand tradition of intelligent, witty, perceptive and wise comedy of manners. It would be hard to find a more engaging and attractive character in recent literature than Abby, whose love life is at the center of this marvelous book. Simply put, I adored this book and couldn't put it down.

The best book ever written about "life-after-death"........1999-02-08
I saw the movie, then listened to him on the Art Bell show. Then I read the book and couldn't put it down. I especially liked the part about being able to see future events. It gave me insight about what Heaven is really trying to do! I feel they want to let people know there is life after death. Beyond a shadow of a doubt. I would also recommend "At peace in the light." It gives more details about his 2nd trip.
It really give you different perspective of your daily life.......1999-01-11
I read both of his books and they are absolutely eye opening to different things you see in life. we think there is no more after we die, what if it is true and we get judged by the way we live our life and how we treat others.
want to know more about the centres........1998-06-03
The book gives you a great sense of peace, and knowing. I love his sense of humour especially DOA. For anyone who is dealing with their elderly parents it gives them great insight into the journey with peace and love. Thank you.
Book Description
Over the last ten years, many commentators have tried to describe and analyze the bloody conflicts that tore Yugoslavia apart. But in all these attempts to make sense of the wars and ethnic violence, one crucial factor has been overlookedthe major, often decisive, role played by exile groups and émigré communities in fanning the flames of nationalism and territorial ambition. Based in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia and South America, some groups helped provide the ideologies, the leadership, the money, and in many cases, the military hardware that fueled the violent conflicts. Atypical were the dissenting voices who drew upon their experiences in western democracies to stem the tide of war.
In spite of the diasporas' power and influence, however, their story has never before been told, partly because it is so difficult, even dangerous to unravel. Paul Hockenos, a Berlin-based American journalist and political analyst, has traveled through several continents and interviewed scores of key figures, many of whom had never previously talked about their activities. Hockenos investigates the borderless international networks that diaspora organizations rely on to export political agendas back to their native homelandsagendas that at times blatantly undermined the foreign policy objectives of their adopted countries.
Hockenos tells an extraordinary story, with elements of farce as well as tragedy, a story of single-minded obsession and double-dealing, of high aspirations and low cunning. The figures he profiles include individuals as disparate as a Canadian pizza baker and an Albanian urologist who played instrumental roles in the conflicts, as well as other men and women who rose boldly to the occasion when their homelands called out for help.
Customer Reviews:
Making Sense of a Mess.......2004-01-17
Beyond being a lively and dramatic account of the variety of expatriot politics within the different Croat, Serb, and Kosovar diasporas -- and between them and their homelands -- "Homeland Calling" explains much of the fractious politics within and between the remnant units of Yugoslavia; and it deftly touches on critical Euro-American policy making as well. Hockenos' concise and well-placed summaries of both remote and recent historical events set the stage for understanding the first-hand accounts of key participants' maneuvers that he so carefully weaves into his text. "Homeland Calling" goes a long way toward clarifying the complexities of a crucial decade of Balkan politics and war.
Homeland Calling.......2004-01-15
"Homeland Calling" by Paul Hockenos records the role that the diasporas played in the Balkans wars in the 1990s. Hockenos' enthusiastic and intriguing account of the individuals that he introduces to the reader rapidly struck a chord. His characters often seem larger than life -the man next door turns out to be a character in a Graham Greene novel, organising underground networks and smuggling arms to support an ethno-national ideal. Hockenos provides a peephole into the workings of these intricate networks and provides an insight into the motivations behind these actions. What of the role of these diasporas in the post-conflict Balkans? Hockenos explores the dilemma of the willingness to support the war, but reluctance to help build the democratic institutions which would ensure a lasting peace.
When I bought this book it was not out of an interest in the Balkans. I bought Homeland Calling due to an interest in the role that exiles and diasporas play in today's conflicts and in today's globalised world, particularly relating to the research I am conducting into the conflicts in Africa and the role of diasporas in these conflict. Not only has Hockenos shed some considerable light on the mechanisms of the diaspora machine, but he has also cured an allergy for anything Balkan.
I can highly recommend this book to those interested in diasporas, in the Balkans, in the dynamics of support networks for today's conflicts, or simply as a really good read.
Examining Diaspora Communities.......2004-01-02
Hockenos does an excellent job investigating the diaspora communities outside of the former Yugoslavia which were so instrumental in affecting the region. The depth of access is impressive. Hockenos makes solid connections between the diaspora communities and the former Yugoslavia, both contemporarily, during the Second World War and inter alia. This subject was just waiting to be written on, other writers of the region have temptingly made passing references but Hockenos packeged it all up. Although Hockenos made a valid disclaimer concerning objectivity and bias he obviously has strong feeling about nationalism and his own views of what happened in the former Yugoslavia are apparent. The intent of the book was as much an indictment of nationalist diaspora communities as it was an analysis. Hockenos is clearly hostile to the Croat nationalists and sympathetic to the Kosovars. However, here he is in multitudinal company and I don't think Hockenos, himself, would shy away from an anti-nationalist moniker. A deeper investigation of the Serb communities in Western Europe and the Croat communites in South America would add much to an already good work.
