Story Behind the Book
This book is intended as a celebration of parenthood. Today’s parents have had enough of groveling and self-condemnation. What we need now is a double dose of confidence in our ability to raise our children properly. We also need to consider the specific frustrations that prevent us from enjoying our kids while they’re young. There is a more satisfying way to raise children, as I believe the reader will see. And there is no better time than now to apply it. Our sons and daughters will be grown so quickly that these days at home together will be nothing but a distant memory. Let’s make the most of every moment.

Child abuse is not Christian.......2007-04-14
James Dobson, who wrote about proudly beating his own dog with a leather belt, gives sadistic, un-Christian advice to parents looking for help. Skip this book, practice the Golden Rule. If you think Jesus would approve of whipping little children, you need to repeat Sunday School.
This is child abuse.......2007-01-31
Parenting means to prepare a child for life, to nurture, to love, to guide, to teach.
Discipline is loving guidance, not corporal punishment, where the child in a demeaning and destructive way wrongly learns that violence is a form of acceptable communication and guidance, by parents. There are no benefits to hit a child - It is destructive for a child's self worth, self esteem, and demeaning and disrespectful. Children have feelings and emotions as adults. It is extremely unfair and disgraceful of parents to misuse their power on weaker people - our children - who are defenseless and who don't have their own voice. Your child will be confused and think "Why is my mother and father whom I love and trust inflicting pain on me?" Hitting a child, will separate the bond between parents and a child, and will only make the child fearful of their parents. In addition, hitting a child won't teach and guide a child towards better behavior in a constructive and communicative way. By slapping someone, what do you learn? Nothing - only that it is okay to be antisocial and misbehave and to be violent. Parents who hit their children are THE ONE'S misbehaving. They are no good role models. These parents need parenting classes and therapy as they are victims of abuse themselves. These parents are out of control and out of knowledge.
Think of the Golden rule: Treat other people, yes children are people too, as you with to be treated yourself, with respect, love and kindness. Children are children: They need a safe place to explore their boundaries and to test their parents' love, where parents act as wise, patient, and loving parents- as parents. Why spank a child whose brains are not yet fully developed? Children don't know right from wrong - It is our job to guide and teach them, not punish them. Christians should know better that "spare the rod, spoil the child" from Proverbs in Old Testament is not current any longer. Remember- With Jesus comes a better way, a New Law: The New Testament. Jesus does not spank the children. Jesus says "Let the children come to me". Jesus loves the little children. My fundamental questions are: Why do these parents give birth to children in the world if they can't raise children and love children? Where is the human intelligence here? These dysfunctional parents have grave limitations when it comes to parenting children, as they have not healed from their wounded past and subconsciousness. Their only driving force is to let the child take away their own pain from abuse, by forcing them to pay the price for their own pain, and force the child know how it feels like to be abused.

While I know that James Dobson is not always right.... I think it is absolutely ridiculous that you would blame every single one of your problems on him and your mother. You sound very much like you are looking for people to blame, rather than a way out of your issues. My parents spanked me all the way through my childhood, yet I'm doing great now. I'm emotionally stable, healthy, living fear-free, and I'm prospering financially. The same goes for my wife, who was also spanked as a child.
You mention that you have no relationship with God... Is that what you're going to tell Him when you're standing before Him someday? That you lived your whole life on this earth and didn't have a relationship with Him because you were spanked as a child? Don't get me wrong, I'm not mad at you and neither is God... but it's time that you take some responsibility for where you are right now. You can't spend the rest of your life blaming others for where you are spiritually, emotionally, and physically. I've known of people who were molested, beaten, raped, abandoned, verbally abused, etc when they were children.. yet they now take total responsibility for where they are in life. They have an awesome relationship with God and with others, and they are now teaching thousands of other people how to live a victorious life.
Being spanked as a child is no reason to not love and respect your mother. That's crazy. Being spanked as a child also does not justify all of the conditions and issues that you have mentioned.
You are only a decision away from a completely different life. Yes, you must change your thinking. Yes, you must associate with different people. Yes, you must do a lot of other things to change your situation... but it all starts with a decision. And that decision is yours and no one else's. Everything that you'll ever need has already been provided through the finished work of Jesus Christ.

"Breaking the will".......2006-01-15
"Disappointed" is quite wrong. Dr. Dobson does not advocate "breaking the spirit"; in fact, he warns against this. What he does encourage is to "break the will" (defiance).
This is an excellent book to read if you want to raise children who are respectful and well-adjusted.
a little too religious.......2005-07-31
I was looking forward to reading this book. I was disappointed to discover the author's religious beliefs woven throughout the text. To my knowledge, the book was not advertised in any way as a religious take on the topic. Further, the author advocates 'breaking the spirit' of children and suggests that one way to do so is to slap their thighs as a show of who is boss.
Quite a disappointment.

Good overview.......2006-08-10
This is a very good overview of the North Korean special forces, and is an essential building block for anyone interested in the subject. Drawn mostly from Foreign Broadcast Infornation Service translated documents, it does suffer from a minor, but disturbing, error. My 1998 edition refers to Kim Il-sung's guerrilla clique as the "Kaspen Group", after their area of operations along the North Korean/Manchurian border. The actual place name is "Gapsan" or "Kapsan", depending upon the romanization system, so the clique is the Gapsan or Kapsan group. This error is repeated throughout the book. I would have also liked an explanation as to why North Koreans adopted the term "sniper" for their SF specific units. While everyone agrees that it is an honorific dating back to Kim Il-sung's Soviet 88th Sniper Brigade, the actual Soviet designation for that unit was 88th "Strelnaya" Bde, which had likewise been translated as the 88th Independent Infantry Brigade. I am told that the Soviet term "Strelnaya" (shooter) was used for all Soviet Infantry formations. My notes give the NK term as "Jeo Gyeok", which refers to a team of rifle toting snipers.
Excellent resource with a few flaws..........2001-12-23
I really enjoyed this book. It is really the only book that authoritatively covers this topic. The book's sections on the different SF organizations in the DPRK are based on solid evidence. Some of the information seemed to me to be quite old (from the 60's), but nevertheless is convincing and still relevant considering that the DPRK seems to still operate in many of the same ways.
It is not surprising that some of the rhetoric in the book is right-of-center. For instance, Bermudez (like most other American authors on the DPRK) likes to point out atrocities committed by 'communist' guerillas while ignoring the fact that most atrocities committed during the period of 1945-1953 were committed by the Korean National Police, Army of the Republic of Korea, and right-wing youth groups. He mentions atrocities committed by communists during the Yosu-Sunchon Rebellion, but fails to mention the utter holocaust visited upon the residents of Cheju Island by the Korean Constabulary (Army), KNP, and violent right-wing youth groups; by the way, these forces were transported to the island with US assets and advised by US military advisors in the field. Bermudez doesn't seem to be interested in really addressing what motivated the guerillas of the South, but considering the scope of this book, this is just a minor detail.
Also rather annoying were the frequent and obvious spelling and grammar issues. I don't think there was much of an editing process! Check out page 22 where Bermudez says that communist partisans were to "ferment unrest". I didn't know you COULD "ferment" unrest(!) I believe the word he was looking for was "foment". These issues with his English are frequent enough to be somewhat of an annoyance, but don't really make the book any less interesting.
An Important Contribution.......2000-07-21
One is hard-pressed to find a well-researched material on North Korea's military forces, though there are some excellent research books written by military officers in "lessons learned" formats. The North Korean special operations force, according to South Korea's Defense White Paper, poses one of the most significant military threat in the region along with P'yongyang's chemical weapons and ballistic missiles. This book traces this formidable force from its inception through the present, revealing a significant facet of North Korea's overall military strategy. Despite the timeliness of this work and the depth of its research from one of the most well-known North Korea specialist, it suffers from somewhat poor readability.
Accurate and Informative.......1999-12-15
I had the privilege of interviewing Mr. Bermudez as well as reading this book while researching North Korean Special Forces. The book is highly informative and the author exceptionally knowledgeable. It would be interesting to see the latest information he has gathered considering the present economic/food situations.
At time of printing, NKSF were the best special forces in the world for their set of missions. Other special forces are better suited for different missions and have different resources available to them.
I would recommend this book to anyone looking for reliable background information on the specific topic, as well as anyone interested in the highly ideological and self sacrificial mentality instilled in these people.
about it.......1999-12-04
Talk about tough... The NKSF are probably the best in the world. Although straight on comparison is impossible, they seem to be the best. The encounters with other special forces in 1953 doesn't qualify an objective comparison considering that in 1953 North Korea was very unorganized socially and militarily. Also they were in horrible economical shape with most of it's people starving. Things are kind of different now. Their military traing and organization is upgraded and soldiers are better fed. That would make a tremendous difference. Anyways, the book's great.
Book Description
The war against terrorism continues. Hardly a day goes by without the report of a new outrage. Foremost in the struggle against terrorism are the Special Forces. Guns of the Elite Forces provides a penetrating account of the weapons that elite fighting troops carry into combat. Such elites have always existed in the armies of the world. During World War II, elite units sprang up in most theatres of conflict - the German Brandenburgers carried out clandestine operations in Poland; in the Western Desert, the Long Range Desert Group and SAS penetrated deep behind enemy lines; for larger-scale raids the British Commandos and the US Rangers and Marine Raiders were formed. From 1945, the Special Forces continued to prove their value, operating as small numbers of highly-trained fighters carrying out precision tasks to maximum effect and minimum cost in human lives. These qualities have shown themselves vital in the ongoing war against international terrorism, where the risks to non-combatant are major factors to consider. In the last few decades, and particularly since September 11th, a very special sort of fighting man has risen to prominence: a member of an international elite, his fighting skills finely honed. At Entebbe, Mogadishu, the Iranian Embassy in London, he has show his mettle. At the crucial point, the operative must depend upon his gun. Bursting into a room to confront a terrorist, the raider must be sure his weapon will perform perfectly. At long range, precision is similarly essential. In this illustrated book, expert John Walter provides an overview of the weapons elite forces carry into action, as well as the guns their enemies wield.

Tons of Info.......2002-07-11
This book has almost all the right things to be a hit. It has tons of pictures, gun tests, gun specifications, and hard to find information about guns never built. You can read it once and be amazed and then you can still pick it up and learn more. you can never stop learning from it. The reason I gave it four stars, though, is because of its lack in amount of guns. I understand it is the fifth installment in a series, so I can't wait for the sixth!
Limited M16 information.......2002-04-26
As a builder and collector of AR-15's, I purchased this book in the hopes of getting some new info on the military versions of the rifle. The cover of the book certainly caught my eye, and perhaps that was the intention. However, I found myself getting a bit "depressed" as page after page of non-M16 info was thumbed through. Finally, after reaching nearly the end, there was one story on the M4 Carbine. It was just enough to make me keep the book. That's more than I can say about a few other books I also ordered.
A big disappointment with little real info.......2001-08-22
I was really disappointed with this book. It was more of a outlet for the authors to brag about themselves and complain about their ugly guns that were never excepted and produced by the military.
When you think "assault weapon" you think AR15, AK47, AK74, FAL, right?
There was almost ZERO info on the FAL. How can you right a book on assault weapons and not dedicate pages to the arm of the free world, the assault weapon used by over 90 countries?
There was little info on the AR or AK too. No real shooting techniques, cleaning ideas, or model info.
If you are interested in reading about the authors home made guns and a UGLY 22 cal. machine gun, this book is for you.
If you want valuable info on real assault weapons and there many variations look somewhere else.
Not as concrete as the previous edition but still ok to read.......2001-01-30
The author seems to like German firearms and hate Russian AKs. A lot more guns are covered in this latest edition, but the objective descriptions on many of the guns are less detailed when compared to the previous edition.
I didn't buy this book for political opinion.......2000-07-27
I really like books on guns and guns themselves but I was really disappointed with the ham-handed editorializing in this supposedly objective review of the world's assault rifles. I thought guns were inert but after reading this book you'll see that Soviet Bloc weapons were the evil tools of the commies. Thus only begrudging praise is given to what is by any standard the BEST assault rifle ever made- the AK-47 and its ilk. We learn that the Red Army put Ppsh41's into the hands of housewives at the Battle of Stalingrad because "international atheistic socialism" didn't respect the divinity of women. I don't know which of the two genius' who wrote this book researched that little factoid but I believe it is based on the early defense of one of Stalingrad's factory works by female workers which astounded and depressed the Germans. Why aren't German WW2 guns are called the tools of the "international fascist murderers". Its depressing to still have to deal with Cold War misinformation. Having to wade through the authors' political baggage made this a tedious read, although the illustrations and technical info is good.
