Book Description

A spectacular New York Times and Washington Post bestseller, My FBI is the definitive account of American law enforcement during the Clinton years and in the run-up to September 11.Louis Freeh is clear eyed, frank, the ultimate realist, and he offers resolute vision for the struggles ahead. '[Freeh] comes off as the real deal, an honorable, hard-working man, a devoted public servant and father, a gifted lawyer and onetime federal prosecutor.'---The New York Times 'Freeh did his country a great service by staying on as FBI director to be a witness---a truth teller, if you will---to all the nefarious goings-on at the Clinton White House. As with most debates surrounding the Clinton presidency, it comes down to this: Do you believe Louis Freeh, or do you believe Bill Clinton? If there remains any doubt, this book forever answers that question.'---The Philadelphia Inquirer 'In one of the year's more explosive Washington memoirs, Freeh pulls no punches.'---The Atlanta Journal-Constitution The FBI that Freeh took over in the summer of 1993 was still reeling from the bloody standoff at Ruby Ridge and the conflagration at the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas. Unpopular, underfunded, and understaffed, the Bureau was also creeping along in the technological Dark Ages. For eight years---the second longest tenure of any director since J. Edgar Hoover---Freeh would fight tooth and nail to turn the FBI around. In My FBI, we follow Freeh through his five-year battle against Clinton, National Security Adviser Sandy Berger, and others to win indictments for the Khobar bombings in 2001, which stated that Iranian government officials played a role in the attack. No wonder Bill Clinton called Freeh a 'law enforcement legend' when he nominated him to be FBI Director. No wonder, either, that when Clinton subsequently called that appointment the worst one he made as president, Freeh considered it 'a badge of honor.'

4 out of 5 stars Interesting behind the scenes look at the FBI in the 90s.......2007-10-09

"My FBI" was a quick read and a very interesting look behind the scenes at the FBI in the 1990s. Freeh discusses background on the major cases the FBI handled during his tenure. This book gives insight that you didn't get from the news stories. One of the controversial subjects in the book was Freeh's relationship with President Clinton. This subject may turn off certain people, but the bottom line is that Freeh did not like working for Clinton. That is not a result of politics- because Freeh went out of his way to be apolitical. Most of it stemmed from the many investigations into the Clinton administration like Whitewater, Travelgate, etc. Another small part of the book I found to be interesting was Freeh's take on former "Counterterrorism Czar" Richard Clarke. Freeh writes that Clarke was never a major player in national security in either the Clinton or Bush White House. Freeh writes that Clarke was a second-tier player that was rarely at any of the important meetings. This has somewhat of a ring of truth in light of the way Clarke has tried to recast himself as a modern day Paul Revere of terrorism, after the fact. Somehow I don't buy his self-promotion, see-I told you so attitude. Anyway, overall a solid book for those interested in the FBI and national security issues.

3 out of 5 stars A decent book about Freeh's career in lawenforcement.......2007-09-04

This is a decent memior of Freeh's career in lawenforcement. He seems like he tried his best to hunt down the terrorists behind several bombings and tried his best to investigate corruption in Clinton's WhiteHouse, he does not paint a flattering picture of Pres. Clinton or Jamie Gorelick.

4 out of 5 stars Regardless of Motive, it is Interesting History.......2007-07-11

It is obvious throughout this book that Louis Freeh wanted the world to know that he was not a member of Opus Dei, he was not out to "get" Clinton, and that he did his best to investigate the Saudi bombings.

However, despite his motives, he ended up writing a very interesting story. His pursuit of the New York Mafia, his insight into the FBI and the Executive branch, his perspective of the Clinton administration, and the inside story of the Saudi investigation all make for an interesting read.

This book took a few hours to read. There are a couple of slow pages, but overall it was edited well, paced quickly, and is the right length for the subject. If you are interested in this period of history, in the Bill Clinton Administration, or in the FBI, you will appreciate reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Inside Look At The FBI.......2007-07-08

Mr. Freeh has done a marvelous job of giving an inside view of this organization and the progress of his career leading to and through his tenure there. The author provides as much expose' as possible (without jeopardizing security) with the reader to understand how the Clinton White House attempted to control what should be an independent investigative agency.

Well written and a good vacation read.

3 out of 5 stars Not As Good As I Thought.......2007-02-12

Mr. Freeh really went after President Clinton in this book. I wish he would have provided a lot more details about this. I understand that he had to investigate him and how terrible it was that the president put him in that situation but it seemed way more personal. He highlights good things that happened in his time at the FBI but didn't really get into it too much. He got into things did wrong even less. I just expected so much more from him. He appears arrogant on TV and does in the book also. He talks about how he was thwarted with money issues by Congress and couldn't bring the FBI into the 21st century. Just disappointing. Information is there but the explanation isn't.

      Book Description

An anecdotal history of the Flying Tiger Line. It introduces the pilots from Chennault's American Volunteer Group in China/Burma, who later formed their own airline, The Flying Tiger Line. The book records the history of the Company through the personal records of the pilots, flight attendants, mechanics and other employees. Included are all of the aircraft accident reports, which unfortunately are many.

The Company flew many support missions and contracts in support of the military including: resupply of occupation forces in Japan, relocation of displaced persons after WWII, the Korean airlift, the Vietnam war, the Cambodian ricelift, and many relief flights for famine and earthquake victims.

In addition to all this, the company grew to become the world's largest air freight line. They perfected the art of shipping live animal by air, wild as well as tame. Loads of breeding cattle to Europe and Asia, Pigs to China, race horses to and from the U.S. Australia and New Zealand, draft horses from France to Asia. Then there were the wild ones: monkeys, snakes, gorillas, bears, tigers, lions and who knows what else.

The book is laced with humor as told by the people involved in the specific event. Then there are many "bar storys", some told by the culprits themselves, and some by the victims. Much of the humor was not funny at the time, such as engine fires in the middle of the night, fuel gauges approaching empty or a landing gear refusing to lock down.

      5 out of 5 stars Captivating.......2003-09-25

I recommend Tiger Tales to those with a passion for aviation. The effort to collect all the short stories and anecdotes from previous employees shows how dedicated all the personell, including the author, were to their jobs and company. This book will tranport you to another time, with drive, curiosity, bravery, and passion, that, unfortuneately, is now gone. I could not put it done 'til it was done.

I recently mentioned to a Hawaiian Airlines Captain that I was a retired Tiger pilot. He smiled and said "what a wonderful club you guys had", I agree. Vern's book gives everyone a peek into that club and its exclusive membership. It's gone now but what memories we have.

        Book Description

Through meticulous research and unprecedented interviews with Japanese and American combatants, award-winning author Ralph Wetterhahn provides a breathtaking account of the nose-to-tail air war between American and Japanese flyers above the Bering Sea. Dubbed riders of the “Empire Express,” American pilots stationed in the Aleutians flew nine-hour missions, 1,500 miles round-trip in subzero temperatures, to bomb Japanese installations in the Kuril Islands. While on his ongoing quest to give a full account of MIAs and POWs, Wetterhahn investigated the crash sites of two Empire Express planes found in the Soviet Far East in 2000 and 2001, and here re-creates their crews’ daunting exploits. With unrivaled mastery of aviation, warfare, and military forensic evidence, Wetterhahn rescues from obscurity the final moments of U.S. Navy pilot Walt S. Whitman, who made a forced landing with his crew on the Kamchatka Peninsula. He also details the missions flown by Japan’s pilots and the fate of Japanese captured by the Soviets and interned in Siberia. This is a moving testament to the impulse to account for all servicemen left behind.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars A great read........2007-08-02

Mr. Wetterhahn has done a great service in relating the type of warfare conducted in the Aleutians. However, the only criticism I would have is the title of the book....I think its title misleads the reader in that one is lead to believe this is the story of Bomber 31, whereas it seems to be about the Aleutian campaign. However it is, in my opinion, excellent reading, well researched and told from both sides with understanding and compassion.

        5 out of 5 stars fascinating read..........2005-07-15

Mr. Wetterhahn has done a superb job with his lastest book. Illuminating a theatre of World War II that is seldom touched upon. The daily lives of both american and japanese servicemen is seamlessly woven among an investigation concerning a downed american aircrew and the mystery of what actually happend to them over 60 years ago. Wetterhahn brings his countless years of experience..former combat pilot, aircrash investigator and author to meld a story of unquestionable bravery of the men that served in this theatre. Does this sound like I'm his publisher? Well, I'm not...but I can't emphasize enough...I've always been interested in this aspect of World War II and Mr. Wetterhahn has come forth to make something unique that is accessible to the layman.

3 out of 5 stars Review of The Last Flight of Bomber 31.......2004-10-30

This book was an interesting account of World War II in the Aleutian/Kurile Island area. Particularly fascinating was the detective work to unravel the identity of U.S. aircraft wreckage found on the Kamchatka Peninsula.

Unfortunately the book has numerous errors scattered throughout which detract from the work--several are listed below:

        1) Book states battleship Haruna was sunk at Midway--not so.
        2) Book states A-26s were active in the Aleutians in 1943--not so. The A-26 did not make it to the Pacific Theater until 1944 with initial debut in New Guinea.
        3) The G4M Betty bomber is referred to variously as the Type 97, G3M, and GM-4.
        4) Book refers to destroyer Charleston being involved in Attu invasion. The Charleston was not a destroyer--was officially designated PG-51.
        5) Unexploded ordnance around PV-1 wreckage is referred to as 50mm cannon rounds. Most likely meant 50 caliber machine gun rounds.

It seems a lot of historical works I read today have a significant number of errors.

FROM ONE OF THE NATION’S FIRST ROTOR PILOTS, A BLAZING ACCOUNT OF HIS MOST TOP SECRET, DANGEROUS MISSIONS

Richard Kirkland would never have imagined that anything could compare to tangling with Zeros in life-and-death dogfights over the South Pacific—but that was before he traded his fighter-pilot wings for rotors. It was a move he never regretted, and the riveting experiences he chronicles in War Pilot provide ample reason why. From the first primitive Sikorsky and the sophisticated choppers of Vietnam to flying medevac choppers and saving countless soldiers from certain death in Korea, Kirkland’s firsthand accounts of pilots under fire provide a gripping portrait of not just one American hero, but the many courageous others with whom he flew. . . .

5 out of 5 stars A very good read and interesting man as well.......2005-12-02

I was lucky enough to get a copy of this book at the Reno Air Races several years ago, when Mr. Kirkland was promoting his book there. The book itself is a good read; good enough that when I saw that he had a second book out I ordered it promptly.

I'll admit to being a little biased: the P-38 has always been my favorite plane of the era and being able to talk to a real life veteran and pilot of "The Forked Tailed Devil" was a fantastic experience.

Tales of a War Pilot is about pilot Richard Kirkland who took me to islands near Japan. He flew treacherous rescue missions for the Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (M.A.S.H.)in North Korea. The book includes stories like "Escape from the Stone Age" where a good friend of LT. Kirkland makes a critical mistake and is forced to bail out and survive alligators, malaria, and cannibals. Another memorable story,"Mystery of the MagnificentBeast," involved a huge Convair B-36 that disappears on Valentines Day with an A-bomb in its bay.

I very much liked the book. It was filled with tragedies and successes that kept me on the edge of my seat. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in airplanes and WW2 or anyone who is an Air Force fanatic like me.

1 out of 5 stars This is not a history or true memoir.......2000-11-04

The billing for this book is very misleading especially the Smithsonian History of Avaiation Series title. It is historical fiction and not truly a memoir or a personal account. I don't doubt that the piece is generally accurate. Once fiction is injected, however, the reader never knows what is true and what is not. Nothing is mentioned in the description here or on the book jacket that this is the case. I wish I had my money back.

3 out of 5 stars Tales of a War Pilot.......2000-04-28

This story is very interesting and gives a lot of insight on the conduct of the air war in the Pacific in WWII. The author, Richard C. Kirkland, was a pilot very early in his life, age 20 or around that age. He is assigned to some very noteworthy units, one the famous Black Sheep Squadron where he was acquainted with Mjajor Richard Bong, the noted ace. He was also fortunate to fly with Lindberg, the Lone Eagle who first flew the Atlantic alone. He flew the P-38 and other aircraft and was a very good pilot apparently. The story is not strictly his however, he tells a couple of tales about pilots that he has heard about who have survived stressful situations. They are all interesting, but they are not his story. After WWII he serves in the newly formed Air Force and he is picked to transition into helicopters and this is a fine story of his exploits as one of the first chopper pilots in Korea and one of the first to airlift casualties from battle in a helicopter. This part of his book is superb. I gave this three stars because his tales of WWII in some instances seem contrived. Maybe it is just that he has waited too long to write this, and he does not remember clearly what he writes about. All in all it is a great read of air combat from first hand experience.

5 out of 5 stars brisk adventure in tales amazingly recalled from 1 mans life.......1999-08-09

This easy but captivating read of short stories from a military pilot's accumulated and varied experiences gives the reader an incredible insight into our past world of war and aviation. Probably never again to be duplicated, the military flying career of the author left me aghast at the breadth of poignant events and weighty situations faced by this one flyer in his long military career. I definitely yearned for more tales, more insight and more learning about the life of this man - which was spent significantly in the air! This is a winning first publication for Kirkland. I wish him many more.

Following the Union's blockade of the South's waterways, the survival of the Confederacy depended on a handful of heroes-daring harbor pilots and ship captains-who would risk their lives and cargo to outrun Union ships and guns.
