Volumes I & II in paperback of this 1992 Pulitzer Prize-winning illustrated narrative of Holocaust survival.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent read.......2007-09-12
I read Maus I and II back in junior high and thought it was really cool that I was reading a book while also reading a comic. I purchased and re-read the boxed set recently when I stumbled upon it on Amazon. It's excellent. Truly a one-of-a-kind story, told in a way that gets the reader engaged in the details of what went on back in World War II. I love the cleverness of the Jews being portrayed as mice and the Nazi soldiers as cats. The only qualm I have with this series is that Maus II (the second and last book) ends rather abruptly, which is sort of understandable if you read the books. Honestly, I wanted more from the author and the storyline. Either way, it was a good read back when I was age 12 and still a good read at age 25.
DEMEAMING, INSENSITIVE, STEREOTYPING, TOO GRAPHIC - JUST NOT CORRECT.......2007-09-01
I just don't understand, how any type of stereotyping, as maus is loaded with it, can be acceptable. Stereotyping like bigotry, can "never" be justified! The graphic nature of this book is also "disturbing." With so many other books out there, I personally am unable to understand why anyone would use this book that offends "other" (3 million Catholic Poles for starters)holocaust victims. Many, many books out there get the job done, without such dark graphics and offending peoples, who were also victims. There are three books that I feel are truly objective, factual and just not as offensive, as Maus is: "Auschwitz," by Sybile Steinbacher, Richard Lukas' "The Forgotten Holocaust," which "objectively" talks about "everyone's" suffering in the holocaust; and finally, Michael R. Marrus' "The Holocaust in History." On Marrus' book: "An ideal introduction to the subject for any student of the Holocaust, and an authoritative summary for the expert." Yehuda Bauer, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem(back cover). With all the suffering and sensitivity on the Holocaust, "all" victims' feelings should be considered - maus does "not" accomplish this.
Sometimes truth is better than fiction........2007-08-21
I stumbled across this a few days ago in a book shop in Cambodia, of all places. I sat transfixed reading the book until 4 a.m., when my eyes could no longer focus. When I awoke the next day, I finished the book.
We are provided with a narrative by the father, a Holocaust survivor, and a more recent portrayal of the author (the son, who happens to be the artist, also). We see the trials and tribulations of his father and his mother as a young Jewish couple in World War 2 era Poland during the Nazi invasion and subsequent occupation.
We also get to share the experience of being the guilty son of Holocaust survivors. He worries about seeing his father as the stereotypical "miserly old Jew." Can he have judgment about people who have suffered through so much? Can he have a bit of animosity towards his parents, as most people tend to do? The author has to question how his mother could have survived the Nazi regime, but committed suicide when he was 20. He has to question the relationship with his father. Is he annoying or pitiful or admirable?
All these muddled emotions and the true story of a man who lived through the most brutal crime of the 20th century all come into play.
The drawings are great. The format is great. The idea to show different races as different animals is also great. Because, as silly as that sounds- isn't even sillier that people see our own races as different creatures?
Maus.......2007-08-10
As a Polish/american/alsacian I need to say this book is amazing. It captures all cultures together and produces the most authentic representation of WW2 I have ever read.
Immensely sad. Full of pathos. An immense work.......2007-06-13
More than a graphic novel. Rather a powerful moving tale of a son's recovery of a father's experience of the years of the holocaust and how this trickled down into contemporary family life. Reflective and immense in scope. I would recommend this book genuinely to anyone interested in what makes life worth living. The vignettes of Spiegelman's father are harrowing and inspiring, accentuated by a matter of fact story telling style. Spiegelman's insertion of his own family into the narrative serves to contrast the relatively normal travails of a modern family with those of families on the edge of survival and extinction.
Book Description
How would it be if what we take for human advance were simply a technological progress that literally leaves us out of its equations? What if Progress is not humanity striking out bravely towards the future, but an ultimately destructive force?
In a remarkable tour d'horizon, Paul Virilio paints a bleak picture of current scientific, cultural, social and political values. Art has succumbed to the techniques of advertising and in politics, the battle for hearts and minds has become a mere convergence of opinion. TV ratings have triumphed over universal suffrage. The events of September 11 reflect both the manipulation of a global sub-proletariat and the delusions of an élite of rich students and technicians who resemble the 'suicidal members of the Heaven's Gate cybersect'. And, in this post-humanist dystopia, we are morally rudderless before the threat of biological manipulations as yet undreamt.
About the series: Appearing on the first anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, these series of books from Verso present analyses of the United States, the media, and the events surrounding September 11 by Europe's most stimulating and provocative philosophers. Probing beneath the level of TV commentary, political and cultural orthodoxies, and 'rent-a-quote' punditry, Baudrillard, Virilio, and Zizek offer three highly original and readable accounts that serve as fascinating introductions to the direction of their respective projects, and as insightful critiques of the unfolding events. This series seeks to comprehend the philosophical meaning of September 11 and will leave untouched none of the prevailing views currently propagated.

Dystopia USA.......2003-06-27
Incomprehensible to most Americans, this expressionist poem explains why terrorism is the new world order; a brilliant analysis of the superpower syndrome, dirge for the global glutton. An apt companion work is Emmanuel Todd's L'Apres Empire, translation due February 2004.
Cashing In on 9/11.......2003-06-18
A sloppily argued, near-incomprehensible exercise in nostalgia, nihilism, and name-dropping. This book has almost no explicit connection to the events of 9/11 or the titular "Ground Zero." Virilio may be right about the dangers of modernity, but his argument is superficial. Be sure to read translator Chris Turner's footnotes.
Book Description
This book is a powerful collection of first-person stories told by female firefighters, police officers, paramedics, EMTs, and others who responded to the events of September 11 and its aftermath. Women at Ground Zero provides a unique perspective on the events of that terrible day through the eyes of women rescuers who risked their lives to save others. Through their heartbreaking and inspiring stories, the voices of female rescue workers and their contributions at Ground Zero are finally heard.

Awesome & inspiring!!!.......2004-03-10
I loved this book! It brought out stories that I never heard in all the media blitz after this unforgettable and horrific event. It truly shows another side of the story, and yet they made it very clear that the book was "not to diminish the contributions of the men who lost or put their lives at risk at Ground Zero". I had hesitated and worried that this might be a "feminist - male bashing" viewpoint. Not at all!
It rounds out the story. Something that needed to happen. I feel more of a connection with what happened now than ever before.
I highly recommend this to all - men and women alike. I hope it becomes a standard for reading about women in history and should be in every home for pre-teens on up to learn more about what happened and to offer inspiration.
Buy it! It's a keeper!!
Read This Book.......2003-09-11
Harrowing, engrossing, and well-written firsthand accounts put you right beside police officers, firefighters, and paramedics on that terrible day 9/11/01 (and afterward, too). I could not put it down.
Heroines and role models abound!.......2003-07-10
Susan Hagen and Mary Carouba did an excellent job of bringing to the readers of "Women At Ground Zero" the fact that women also served, were injured, or killed at the World Trade Center complex in New York City. They knew women had to be there but yet the media didn't cover them. So they went in search of them. People forget that women are also members of the fire, police and medical departments around the country. They didn't "want the women...to fade into the background of American History" nor "future generations of children...believing that only men are strong, brave and heroic."
They interviewed women from the NYPD, FDNY, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department (PAPD), and other women who were there that fateful day and many days thereafter. Each chapter tells another woman's story so be prepared to read 30 gut-wrenching stories. They also interviewed women who were at the scene in other capacities. AND something very few people know about-three women died that day while in the service of saving others: Captain Kathy Mazza (PAPD), Moira Smith (NYPD), and Yamel Merino (EMT). There are chapters about those women as well.
These women and so many others saw crushed vehicles, dead bodies and body parts, along with airplane parts. They witnessed more in a short period of time then most people do in a lifetime. Some of their stories are very graphic while others brushed over that part. They talked about what they experienced and saw, their injuries, feelings and more. Its no wonder they continue to have problems BUT more importantly-most of them have all returned to the jobs they held on 11 September 2001. They continue to serve their community. They are all heroines and definitely role models for young girls to follow in years to come.
This is a book well worth reading though if you are like me it may take you awhile to get through it. I admit I had a hard time reading each chapter. With my background I felt everything these women went through without actually having been there. Be prepared for your own emotions to run the gamut. Be prepared to relive that day and the days that followed over again through these women's eyes. But take the time to read "Women At Ground Zero".

When I wrote my review of this incredible book, I accidentally gave it 2 stars instead of my intended 5 stars. I apologize for my mistake and give this book the highest points possible. It will move you deeply.

The designer of the legend's own words.......2000-03-28
For the cerebral military history and aviation history buff, it's hard to get a better book than this one. Mr. Horikoshi was the leader of the team that designed the famous Zero, the plane that scared the Allies silly for the couple of years around Pearl Harbor. The book focuses on what he knows best: the design of the plane, including its context in fighter plane designs of the pre-war years. Toward the end, there are some agonized comments about attempts to design successors to and modifications to the Zero after the Americans developed tactics and aircraft specifically to combat it. Combat results are described in only the most cursory way, so many military history buffs may be disappointed that the only deaths recounted in detail are those of test pilots. For those interested in the more cerebral side of military history -- the weapons systems, the economic and logistical problems, and so on -- there are few books as rewarding as this one.
There aren't first-person accounts of dogfights or bombing attacks here; Horikoshi never participated in combat. Nor is there anything substantive here about the training of the pilots that flew those first Zeros and deserve a large amount of the credit for the victories the design produced in 1940-1942. Instead there is a meticulous recap of the decisions that went into building the plane, and the reader gets keen insight into how an aeronatical engineer must think in order to create a near-legendary design. After reading this book, it's hard to avoid the conclusion that if Imperial Japan of the 1930's had had better engine designs than the ones available to Mr. Horikoshi, the road from Pearl Harbor to Tokyo Bay would have been longer and bloodier than it worked out to be.

Unbelievable visual depiction of Sept 11th. and the WTC.......2007-07-04
My friend and I actually went to the museum where many of these items depicted in the pictures were displayed. The photographs that Marlon took were real. The pics brought to life what those who were cleaning up after the attacks on the WTC were feeling. An awesome book!
Book Description
In a studio just blocks away from Ground Zero, longtime Life photographer Joe McNally, architect of some of the largest photographic productions ever attempted in the magazine industry, created a stunning series of portraits of the heroes of Ground Zero. Over the course of two weeks, approximately 200 people came before McNallys lens: survivors, firemen, policemen, volunteers, doctors, nurses, widows, children. Now, in a dignified tribute to the heroes and victims of Ground Zero, 150 of McNallys compelling portraits are collected together in Faces of Ground Zero.

Substantial Story About The Zero........2006-02-28
"Cracking The Zero Mystery" by Jim Rearden. Sub-titled: "How The U.S. Learned To Beat Japan's Vaunted WWII Fighter Plane" Stackpole Books, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, 1990.
In June 1942, the Imperial Japanese Navy feinted towards the Aleutian Islands off Alaska, in an attempt to draw U.S. Navy forces away from the impending battle of Midway. One result of this IJN thrust towards Alaska, was that Flight Petty Officer Tadayoshi Koga crashed his Zero into a muddy bog on Akutan Island, some twenty five miles East of Dutch Harbor, Alaska. Because the Zero was crashed in Alaska, Jim Rearden became interested in writing its story. The back cover of the book notes that, after the War, Mr. Rearden "...moved to Alaska to teach wildlife management at the University of Alaska". His devotion to things Alaskan is evident in his book chapters dealing with the crashed Zero in Alaska. In fact, in my humble opinion, those chapters are most interesting in this small book, only 128 pages, (including the index).
The author, Jim Rearden, has done a lot of research into the pilot of the Zero, Petty Officer Tadayoshi Koga, using Japanese sources who were happy to help. The author also tracked down the Americans who were involved in the discovery of the crashed Zero, July 1942, and its subsequent recovery, and, if these people were still alive, obtained their personal remembrances about the events. Finally, to cap it all off, using "...three Navy photos of the downed plane"...(p. 110), Rearden was able to locate the actual crash site and the then empty grave of Petty Officer Koga. This was a rather poignant chapter of the book. The least interesting chapter (even though I am a retired engineer), was the Appendix which compared Koga's Zero with contemporary U.S. Fighter planes. This appendix read too much like an engineering report.
Mr. Rearden saw fit to add chapters dealing with the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, the importance of the Battle of Midway and the impact of the Zero on the war in then Pacific. I felt that they these chapters were somewhat unnecessary for a book of this type. So, five stars for the excellent research, four stars for the good writing, and three stars for the superfluous history. Average is four stars.

Recounting their professional and personal experiences in reporting a disaster of great magnitude, women such as ABC's Cynthia McFadden and Ann Compton, CNN's Judy Woodruff, NBC's Rehema Ellis, and many other television, radio, newspaper, magazine, and photojournalists show us how the news happened and what it takes to cover crisis.

A6M Zero in action, Squadron/Signal No. 59.......2002-06-25
Though officially out of print, this book can still be bought by the persistent enthousiast. Its strenght -as in all books in this series- lies in the abundance and quality of photographic material, considering the number of pages, fifty. The photographs compare very well to the other main source of Zero/Reisen photographs, the Osprey/Aircam No.16 written by Richard Bueschel in 1970, definitely out of print, and far harder to get. This Squadron/Signal book is together with "Zero" by Robert Mikesh and "Zero Fighter" by the same author THE standard A6M reference for me.
A Terrific book with many rare photos of the A6M Zero.......1999-10-28
I regard this book and "Japanese Aircraft of the Pacific War" as my two prized reference sources on the Mitsubishi A6M 'Reisen'. In addition to the many rare photos and historical footnotes, there are also beautifully done color plates and line drawings that illustrate the variations and type changes in this aircraft. A must have for anyone interested in the Zero Fighter.
