Book Description

This book takes a hard look at the reasons why the government bureaucracy has failed as the nation's bill collector for child support...and how families get their money in only about one in five cases.

It's a national scandal that millions of fathers don't pay and get away with it. Their ex-wives and children often end (up on welfare af taxpayers' expense. Nationally, $50 billion is owed in back support.

This book is valuable to single parenets who need help in getting the child support they are entitled to. It offers help on how to obtain support, so that your family won't end up victims of a deadbeat dad, or in some cases, a deadbeat mom. The book is also meant for grandparents. who often must help support their daughter's children. Make The Jerk Pay goes beyond just explaining how to use the child support system. It tells how you can track down a missing spouse by using your own skills and available public records and the Internet. Beyond that. you will learn how to do some sleuthing to uncover money, property and other assets of the deadbeat.

Men may take offense at the book's title. But we consider it justified because nine out of ten deadbeats are men. For the custodial fathers trying to collect from deadbeat moms, this book is for you too.

Many men don't want the responsibility of being a father, so they end up divorcing their children as well as their wives. They run off, often moving from state to state. Some create new identities for themselves by changing their names and getting new Social Security numbers, new credit cards and driver's licenses.

They go to great lengths to conceal their assets from the families they abandon. Many arrange to be paid under the table so their earnings can not be traced or attached. Often they will flout court orders to pay child support, knowing they are likely to get away with it.

The tactics of deadbeat dads add up to a nightmare, financially and emotionally, for the mothers and children. Too often the mothers are left to fend for themselves at a time when they are least able to cope.

Many women will not even seek child support. They may fear hostility from their ex-husbands or partners, or feel that asking for child support is like asking for a handout.

Others shy away because they fear it will be costly, time-consuming and too much of a hassle to deal with the bureaucratic child support system.

If you are such a victim, you may feel abandoned and cheated. That's natural. Some women strike back by denying visitation rights to the father. That's a mistake. It hurts the child and gives the absent father an excuse for not paying child support.

But you need not feel that you are powerless. There are laws and state and county agencies which are supposed to help you. It's the responsibility of prosecutors and judges to aid you in getting support orders and enforcing them.

You can turn to support groups whose members know exactly what you are going through and can help you cope with the system. In the end, it's up to you to help find him and make him pay. Because you have the most at stake, you may have to become a squeaky wheel and pester child support officials to get your case moving.

There are countless mothers who have made the system work for them. You will read vignettes about some of these women and how they triumphed, often by the force of their will.

As unsettling as this book is, every man who is contemplating marraige should read it. You will get some idea of the forces arrayed against you when your wife decides to call it quits and move on to her next victim.

1 out of 5 stars Can't wait until the law is actually fair.......2006-03-10

Completely crazy! Warning! This is a bible for gold diggers. It's amazing that in the 21st century, 30 years after Roe v. Wade that some women and men, for that matter, are still pulling this garbage. The choice to be a parent is 50\50 and no, ladies, it does not have to be decided at orgasm. For 30 years, women in the United States have had the right to choose to be or not to be a parent after conception. Abandonement, abortion and adoption laws give all women the right to decide whether or not they want to be parents. Men do not have this choice. They never have. Men are just expected to take a huge responsibility without any choice. That's being adult? In what crazy world? Why do you think more than 50% of marriages end in divorce in this country? No one in the United States should be forced by anyone to be a parent-Or forced into marriage because of a child. Women aren't. Stop playing victims. It's childish. Stop getting "religious" at convenient times(i.e. when you're pregnant). Where was your religion and morals while you were having unprotected, irresponsible nonmarital sex?

Men should have the same legal choices that women have, barring abortion. A man should be able to for a certain period of time following conception or notification of paternity, legally relinquish his parental responsibilities-that includes financial. Women have this right. Why shouldn't men?

When you accidentally get pregnant ladies and the father tells you he doesn't want to have the child, either abort, adopt or abandone or GET A LIFE! and raise it yourself without dragging other people like the reluctant bio-father and the child, for that matter, into the mess you've made.

Don't accuse "fathers by force" of running from their "mistakes". Accept their choice for what it really is, an attempt to correct their "mistakes". By keeping the children, you're not necessarily correcting your mistake, you're just compounding it.

Very slanted writing! However, it does offer some very good tips on finding out information about the ex (which might be useful before filing, during the divorce, or after if she leaves with the kid(s)). Check it out. It might be a good idea to see what you can find out about yourself so you'll know what might come up in court.

I have read many books on this subject and this one stands out as one of my favorites. The author covers many different "situations" and discusses many ideas on how to collect back child support. A lot of research was put into this book and I found it all very helpful and full of interesting ideas and suggestions.

    Book Description

Shedding new light on contemporary campaigns to encourage marriage among welfare recipients and to prosecute "deadbeat dads," Wives without Husbands traces the efforts of Progressive reformers to make "runaway husbands" support their families. Anna R. Igra investigates the interrelated histories of marriage and welfare policy in the early 1900s, revealing how reformers sought to make marriage the solution to women's and children's poverty.

Igra taps a rich trove of case files from the National Desertion Bureau, a Jewish husband-location agency, and follows hundreds of deserted women through the welfare and legal systems of early twentieth-century New York City. She integrates a broad range of topics, including Americanization as a gendered process, breadwinning as a measure of manhood, the relationship between consumer culture and social policy formation, the class dimensions of family law, and the Jewish community as a source of welfare policy innovation. Igra analyzes the history of antidesertion reform from its emergence in social policy debates, through the establishment of domestic relations courts, to Depression relief programs. She shows that early twentieth-century reformers, by attempting to make instrumental use of poor people's intimate relations, anticipated welfare policies in our own time that promote marriage as an answer to poverty.

5 out of 5 stars Great tips for tracking anyone you can't find.......2002-03-28

While this book is specifically marketed towards women who are trying to find their ex-husbands in hopes of getting them to pay child support, the tips in this book could be useful for just about anyone trying to find a lost relative, friend, ex-boyfriend or girlfriend, etc. There is a detailed list of agencies and businesses to search, most providing addresses of lost people for free or for a very small fee. The book provides lists of all the information you need, from a social security number for some searches to a phone number or simply a last name for others. While there are probably other ways to locate this information and the book may not contain every last shred of info out there, this is a good detailed guide to start with - and it may be ALL you need.

      Book Description

Recently, many political voices have indicated a strong desire to track down absent fathers who have absconded without fulfilling child support obligations to their biological or adopted children. This renewed interest in "deadbeat dads" has resulted from a recognition that the social welfare programs, which pick up the tab for abandoned children, are contributing significantly to an ever-increasing federal budget deficit. Meanwhile, in a large number of cases, there simply isn't enough money for an absent parent to maintain his own separate support and fulfill the support obligations that the law requires. This book explores the history, reforms, and consequences of child support in America. The authors have included case studies as well as discussions on the psychological consequences of separating families, effects of divorce laws on the award of child support, contested paternity, and child custody alternatives. They conclude with a discussion on economic responsibility and the deadbeat epidemic. The book is intended to empower the larger number of parents who are caught in the midst of overworked agencies, discouraging tales, and the lack of information that keeps them paralyzed from acting on their own behalf.

1 out of 5 stars *Deadbeat Dads*: A Publishing Scandal.......1999-03-04

In reviewing a book, one must keep in mind the book's purpose and intended audience. (*Gulliver's Travels* would make a poor travelogue.) But this caveat poses a problem for someone writing a review of *Deadbeat Dads: A National Child Support Scandal*. What is its purpose and intended audience?

Is it intended for academics and other with a serious interest in understanding the problem of noncompliance with child support orders? One hopes not. This book has nothing to offer such readers. The book is poorly researched, almost completely undocumented and largely lacking in understanding of the problem it seeks to highlight. (Statistics are striking in their absence and, in the few instances where they are included, they are seldom attributed to their source. 'Many' and 'often' are employed so as not to tax the reader with numbers, and there is a consistent bias in how these words are used. Even small percentages are described as representing 'many' cases when it suits the authors' purposes of reinforcing stereotypes.)

Perhaps the book is intended as a call for legislative and court action. If so, it fails completely. Not only is it dangerous to predicate legislative and judicial action on an mistaken understanding of social problems, the book contains no viable suggestions for legislative or judicial solutions.

Is it intended for those seeking to collect court ordered child support? One hopes not because the book gives precious little practical advice. And some of what is offered is of dubious value: "[I]f the deadbeat's workplace is known, she [the woman owed child support] might go there dressed in rags, *perhaps with the children*, making it known to all what the problem is and who is at fault. As long as no laws are broken, she can make her point in a powerful and effective manner" (p. 126-7, emphasis added). This book, with its provocative and alliterative (and very offensive) title, its "dumbed down" prose, and its cartoon versions of "case studies", is likely to appeal only to mediocre high school students trying to dash off a required term paper. Unfortunately, students relying on this book will not come to understand the problem the book purports to address. Here are a few of the more egregious errors in the book:

*It is claimed that no-fault divorce laws has resulted in "[c]hildren's standards of living . . . [dropping], substantially in fact, to the extent that their household income is likely to be approximately one-third of its predivorce level" (p. 49). There is no citation for this claim. The only study claiming to show anything approaching this effect of no-fault divorce laws was that done by Lenore Weitzman (*The Divorce Revolution*, 1985). Weitzman's study has since been shown to be radically wrong and she has recanted her claims. (Interestingly, though Weitzman's exercise in "junk science" must be the source of the authors' statistic here, Weitzman's name does not appear in the book--not even in the rather long bibliography.)

*Nowhere in the book does the reader learn that 52% of all fathers who owe child support earn less than $6,155 per year (University of Wisconsin Poverty Studies Institute, 1993).

*It is nominally acknowledge that noncustodial mothers can be "deadbeats," too. However, it is not adequately noted that the reason most "deadbeat parents" are fathers (a fact that the authors repeatedly reinforce--as if the title isn't sufficient emphasis) is that, by far, most people who are ordered to pay child support are fathers. In fact, 47% of noncustodial mothers default on child support obligations, compared with 27% of noncustodial fathers who default (DHHS Technical Analysis Paper No. 42, 1991).

*The book mentions a couple of times that child support compliance is higher when parents share custody. (So as not to burden the intended reader, it isn't mentioned that child support compliance exceeds 90% in cases of joint custody, is almost 80% when non-custodial parents have frequent visitation, and drops to about 44% when visitation is denied.) Nevertheless, encouraging joint custody is not trumpeted as a solution to child support non-compliance. Indeed, in the discussion of various forms of custody, three full pages and three "case studies" are devoted to the claimed advantages of sole custody. Advantages of joint custody are confined to one short paragraph that describes "another school of thought" (p. 95).

While mediocre high school students, eager to find a source that they can easily digest and cite in writing a term paper, are being misled about the problem of child support, they will be helped to an unhealthy dose of stereotyping. The motives of fathers who seek custody are repeatedly questioned. Motherhood is described as an "occupation" (p. 47) and women are described as leaving "the work force . . . to assume the responsibilities of being a married woman and mother" (p. 46).

This book is not worth buying; it is not worth reading; it is not worth cutting down the trees used to print it. There is a scandal showcased by *Deadbeat Dads*, to be sure. But the scandal is how a book like this one could be published.

1 out of 5 stars This book expresses popular myths surrounding child support........1998-11-02

If you're looking for a well-rounded book objectively exploring child support issues - this isn't it. If you're looking for a one-sided, male bashing view - complete with all of the popular myths surrounding child support - this book is for you.

I find it amazing that such a derogatory term as Deadbeat Dad could be used, let alone make it the title of the book.

From their Ivy League ivory towers, two medical doctors take a stab at performing public policy. This book is full of subjective statements and never presents alternate views or opposing arguments. Surprisingly, this book contains no footnotes, although they do list a bibliography. Their example "stories" seem flat and hollow - like they were cooked up just to fit the point they were trying to make. In every example, the man is the bad guy, the cause of the problem and the woman is the victim. What I did like about the book is that they did not try to cover up the fact that it's all about getting money based on gender bias.

If you're looking for practical information, you won't find it here. If you're looking for rigorous research and a thought-provoking text, you will be seriously disappointed.

      Book Description

The "deadbeat dad" is a common figure in today's news media. As an experienced social worker, family therapist and mediator, Deena Mandell is intimate with legal and institutional discourses on the topic, but also with the lived reality of those involved in support conflict. In Deadbeat Dads, she addresses the question: "Why hasn't child support enforcement solved the problem of non-payment?"

Non-payment of child support is all-too-easily categorized as an individual act of deviance or moral failing, or as having purely economic ill effects. One consequence of this is to actually reinforce resistance and disengagement on the part of fathers, by causing them to see themselves as victims, whose personal rights are under threat. Thus, in the author's words, "In the discursive struggle between the state's protection of its financial interestsÂ…and the fathers' focus on their personal rights, the needs of children literally disappear."

Dr Mandell constructs a complex, nuanced argument around findings from interviews with a small sample of separated fathers, augmented with the perspectives of enforcement personnel such as judges, mediators and lawyers, and with firsthand observation of courtroom discussion. This is a qualitative study that lets informants speak for themselves, but subjects the resulting insights to critical analysis.

4 out of 5 stars Deadbeats with an attitude.......2003-06-14

Views deadbeat dads as reflecting their own attitudes that imply they each are good fathers regardless of the contradictions in their behaviors and that they use elements of the socially constructed systems to support those views. Developing a system of support that depends on the men to be the main providers reinforces the patriarchal system leaving women with the main role of care provider, thus keeping them locked in the very position they tried to escape from. Males also tend to view the marital relationship as one of support for privilege - sexual and housekeeping favors for financial support. With divorce and the end of those privileges they view it unfair that they still have to pay support. Courts and social systems are viewed as being in support of the wife and feminism. Deena concludes that while males should still have to pay support, the support should really come from the state. It is unrealistic to think that a household that was not doing well - as most marriages that end in divorce are doing - would not be able to support two households when before they could not support one. She realizes this is also unrealistic in a time when budgets are being cut back not raised.

She realizes there are conflicts between holding her feminists views and realizing that men do have some grounds for holding their interpretations of unfairness in the system but she blames that on the continuing patriarchal elements in the system used to garner their continuing support.

A good quote: "Their transformation of patriarch into provider without privilege was unacceptable to them." P. 219

              Book Description

The F4U Corsair's combat career was longer than that of almost any other World War II fighter aircraft. Its success led to its service around the globe, and it was employed by the US Navy, British Fleet Air Arm and the Royal New Zealand Air Force. After the war, the Corsair also served with the French Navy, in various Latin American Air Forces, and with forces fighting in Korea. This book showcases seven separate Corsair variants modelled across 1/32, 1/48 and 1/72 scales. Among the aircraft featured are an F4U-1 Birdcage, an F4U-1A from VF-17 'Jolly Rogers', a Fleet Air Arm Corsair Mk.II, a Korean War F4U-4 and an F4U-7 French Corsair.

Kudos to Osprey, first of all, for publishing this line of books. BUT...I question the choice of author on this one. I have purchased other books in this series, for example the F-4 Phantom II book, and have been fairly pleased. This one, though, is a book without a specific market. It's not for the newbie (that's for sure!!) although the pictures @ first glance would make you think it is. The author walks you through the process, but mentions things I've never heard of...often in passing or in a single sentence. I've been modeling for 10 years, and am befuddled by his references...and not just because some products aren't sold here in the states. Think about it: if I knew these advanced procedures and obscure products you mention in your book, why in the heck would I buy your book???!!!
I rate the title 3 stars because they do cover a variety of scales & brands, and the printing, & pictures are very good.

Told as several short stories, Bent Wings is a collection of what would otherwise be a "Pilots' Hangar Talk," stories from one pilot to another. From the start, the author straps you in and puts you in control of his F4U Corsair. Soon, your at 30,000 feet flying among the rainbows.

Many of the stories are devoted to activities of young F4U Corsair pilots, with actual accident reports and photos of both good and bad landing. An F4U Corsair pilot himself, the author reflects his experience as an aviator in a smooth easy to read style that both pilots and land-lovers will enjoy.

If you've ever dreamed of what it would have been like to fly an F4U Corsair, read "Bent Wings."

I met my first Corsair in Ordnance School at the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Florida, on my way to Pensacola and a career in Naval Aviation. In the early summer evenings, I would go down to the hanger and sit in the cockpit, dreaming of things to come. Circumstances got in the way, the career didn't work out, and I never got to fly a Corsair. But I did fly the T-28 Trojan -- better visibility, yet the same kind of attitude, throaty roaring sound, and serious torque problems. Even without this familiarity, Fred makes it possible to fly with him and the other contributors in a series of vignettes every bit as exciting as an action/adventure literary effort. You can see the animated activity of the flight deck, you can feel the newness of it to these fledgling pilots, you can feel the excitement and yes, the terror, the fear of error. And you can almost smell the hot engine oil and hear the thunder of thousands of horsepower unleashed in that huge radial engine. Be in the air at night, with the golden sun dropping into the ocean, the majesty and beauty bringing tears to your eyes, and then the sudden horror at the realization; you have to put this pig down on a matchbook! One can see why it is widely thought that Navy pilots are the finest trained in the world. It's also easy to understand Fred's dubious achievement of being America's honorary Japanese Ace in Corsairs, having downed five of the aircraft one way or another. Come fly with Fred, come fly, lets fly away!

I met Mr. Blechman at Chino Planes of Fame Corsair Demonstration Day and he enthusiastically signed his book for me! I could hardly wait to get home and read it and I was not let down. I have long been fascinated by the hog and the stories in his book helped me experience the art of flying the long nose bird vicariously. I finally have a good appreciation for just how difficult a machine it was to land aboard an air craft carrier. Well done Mr. Blechman.

                Book Description

One of the most storied aircraft of WWII, the Vought F4U-4 Corsair was the first single engine production aircraft capable of 400 mph in level flight. With its characteristic gull wing and giant 18-cylinder double wasp engine, it proved a superb fighter in the Pacific campaign and achieved victory ratio approaching 10 to 1. The exploits of the famed Black Sheep Squadron of Corsairs was recounted by their leader, Marine fighter ace Major Gregory "Pappy" Boyington, in the book "Baa Baa Black Sheep." The Handbook of Flight Operating Instructions told pilots everything they needed to know before climbing into the cockpit. Originally classified "Restricted", the manual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. This affordable facsimile has been reformatted, and color images appear as black and white. Care has been taken however to preserve the integrity of the text.

3 out of 5 stars Vought F4U-4 Corsair Flight Operating Instructions.......2007-01-12

This is a newsprint style reproduction of the April 1945 Pilot's manual. The picture of an F4U-1 on the cover is misleading. The text is the F4U-4 manual. The illustrations will be helpful for historians and model builders. The operating instructions answered some procedural questions I had about the accuracy of some made for TV scenes I had viewed.

5 out of 5 stars Really really cool WWII era flight manual.......2006-11-17

This is an actual flight manual, the type used by pilot's in WWII. It's really amazing to read about how to handle in-flight emergencies, forced landings, not to mention just how to land this bird. If you ever flew one of these in Microsoft Flight Simulator, and you've wanted to know more about the nuts and bolts of what it's like to fly one of these amazing craft, this is IT!!

                2 out of 5 stars it's okay.......2006-11-15

it's just a cheap duplicate of the government produced manual. ok if you can't find same or similar elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding look inside the cockpit of the greatest Marine fighter ever!.......2006-07-01

If you're a fan like I am of "Baa Baa Blacksheep" then you have to have this book! It shows you everything you'd ever need to know about how to fly the Corsair, and wow is it interesting. This is an original World War II training manual. Despite that, it's not a hard read but a really easy to study book -- probably those kids flying these planes back in the War could not be expected to read anything BUT something entertaining! Anyway this is a must-have if you are a modeler or enthusiast. I can't wait to take this to the air museum with me and show off to the docents! They'll think I actually flew this plane.

                Book Description

This is the remarkable story of an airplane that became a legend--with a sleek silhouette and bent wings, it doubled as a day and night fighter, could fly off carriers or from land, and served both as a dive bomber and reconnaissance plane. Filled with facts and figures, this fast-paced history begins with the nerve-wracking test flights of the 1940s and concludes with the F4Us that were active thirty-eight years later. Placed skillfully in between are the stories that gave birth to the legend: the exploits of the aces, including the Medal of Honor recipient who shot down twenty-five enemy planes, and the details of the combat missions of Charles A. Lindbergh. During thirty months of combat in World War II with the U.S. Navy and Marines, the Corsair shot down more than two thousand Japanese planes. In Korea the U-bird, as it was called, was credited with ten aerial victories.

A trip down memory lane for anyone who has followed the career of this Cadillac of the props, this new paperback edition of a book first published in hardcover in 1979 offers fine historical aviation reading that presents a riveting picture of the men and machine that helped win two wars.

The best overall history on the Corsair. (trust me I have almost all of them, and this one twice)
A little light on technical info, but for that you really should own Americas Hundred Thousand, by Francis H. Dean.

Easy read as well, not overly dry.

Some fun info like Marines using there Corsairs to Make Icecream! Yes durring the war!

Though not the book I would recommend to my girlfriend, I read it in one session from front to cover. Is it because I was born too late to fly this plane myself? The nice thing for me about this book is that I got the feeling that it took me back in time and let me experience wat it was like -or at least what I thought it would be like-. There are enough photographs to prevent you from drowning in text and evere aspect of the plane gets covered, with the exception of what it was to maintain a Corsair airworthy for its groundcrews.
This book was published in the States by the United States Naval Institute and in Britain by PSL (Patrick Stepens Limited)

                5 out of 5 stars War Baby's View.......2001-12-31

Born in 1943, I spent my youth building balsa Corsairs (and Mustangs, Hellcats, Warhawks, Spitfires and Hurricanes) covered with silkspan, and reading of their exploits in WWII and Korea. There must be millions of us Fifty- and Sixty-somethings in America still feeling we were born too late to have a chance to fly the great fighters of WWII. For us, Tillman is a timely author. We buy and read his well-told histories with feelings of respect for the designers, builders, test pilots, pilots and crews who made that great age of the piston-powered warbirds possible.

Avoiding the dreary repetitiveness of some such books, which seem bound to chronicle every squadron's every mission, Tillman's Corsair is an exceptionally good example of its breed. It combines valuable historical detail with first-hand accounts of the plane and its pilots in action.

                4 out of 5 stars BarrettTillman's"Corsair".......2000-02-16

This offering by Barrett Tilllman is one of the more readable accounts of WWII naval aviation. Tillman goes into enough depth to give the reader an appreciation for the technology and engineering involved in the F4U Corsair, but rightly devotes most of the book to the stories of the aviators who flew the "Ensign Eliminator" in combat. Anecdotes related to the author by veteran Corsair drivers, added to Tillman's own knowledge and experience in flying WWII aircraft lend authenticity to the work. Very well researched, this book is a valuable resource for the student of WWII or aviation, but its style also recomends it to the casual reader.

                  4 out of 5 stars A great story about a great airplane.......2007-02-22

Mr Guyton was one of the primary Corsair test pilots from the experimental model all the way up to the Korean War and provides many details about the process Vought went through to improve the design over time. I thought the section on testing new aileron modifications on a dailly basis was particularly interesting. He basically had a tape measure extended between his knees. He also had a gauge on the top of the stick that measured the amount of lateral force he was applying to the stick. His job day-after-day was to move the stick an inch to the left and then record the roll rate and the pressure reading in a log book. Then move it and inch to the right and record. Then an inch and a half to the left. Then and inch and a half to the right... He was on a regular diet of airsickness pills. He told stories of having to open the canopy to eject his breakfast and hoping that his mechanics wouldn't find the evidence on the tail group. Very readable book. The sections on dive testing were thrilling and terifying as well. I can't imagine pushing a plane over into a dive that nearly killed you the prior day.

                  4 out of 5 stars Test pilot Guyton -- a Good Read.......2005-09-27

Boone Guyton includes a lot of interesting information on the development history of the Vought Corsair. The narrative is conventionally done, starting with its role in the Pacific war, then a little bit on his getting started in aviation and in the Navy, and finally his flying experiences with Vought.

Some unexpected and appreciated extras included his description of reassembly testing of Vought dive bombers in pre-war France and his experiences with the "Flying Pancake".

His two accidents flying the Corsair, as well as the loss of some friends, vividly pointed out the hazards of the test pilot life.

Overall, a very good read, interesting and well written.
