5 out of 5 stars A call to educators everywhere!.......2007-07-29

This is a MUST READ for anyone who is genuinely interested in the thinking and impact of educational philosophy. The important choices we make as a society as we educate our children have immeasurable effect on our future. Caroline Pratt was ahead of her time. She calls for an education of children that leads to critical, original and independent thinking - rather than training kids to be passive receivers of meaningless information. We need the progressive movement to re-start and move into the mainstream now more than ever.

4 out of 5 stars Truly a book for those who care about children........1999-10-08

I was impressed with the depth of love and dedication Caroline Pratt expressed as she retold her lifes story. It was an easy heartfelt read.

    Book Description

If I'd Known Then What I Know Now is an inspiring, Pay It Forward-type manifesto for achieving success and happiness from childhood to retirement. Equally suitable for anyone from eight to eighty, it is actually a life guide or map that will help the reader traverse the roads of life, showing how to avoid the minefields and grab the gold ring by making the best choices when facing life's most important decisions.

The great value for readers is that they get the answers on what to do before they need to make the decision. So, the thirteen-year-old gets to learn the do's and don'ts of successful dating before ever going out on that first date. The newlywed learns about parenting before actually becoming one. This handbook for life will remain with readers year after year, helping them with life's most important decisions at just the time when they need the information.

If I'd Known Then What I Know Now is packed with wisdom for people of all ages. Its simple style incorporates humor and storytelling to teach people how to learn from the mistakes of those who have gone before them. Opening with three of life's most important principles for success regardless of age, the book is then organized in a handy lesson-by-lesson format with an eye toward age appropriateness. Lesson one, for example, is geared to seven- to fifteen-year-olds, and covers such topics as dealing with mom and dad, school, manners, and good habits. By lesson five, for those fifty-five and up, it's more concerned with investments, health, retirement planning, and growing older gracefully.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Primer for Avoiding Life's Pitfalls.......2006-01-25

This award winning book presents practical, workable, life changing, concepts. These principles apply to parents who are teaching their children. They are relevant for the young person in high school or college. And for the adult on the threshold of a new stage of life: starting a family, a career move, or in retirement years. Whatever your age you will find the book applicable to your situation.

Parrish reveals secrets to success in the area of relationships, goal setting, and values. He then goes on to offer suggestions for a time line of adult life. He gives specific applications for marriage, family, others, finances, and healthy living. It is a book about making the best choices when wrestling with life's most important decisions.

Parrish quotes from the classic motivational authors. Among his favorites are Og Mandino, Napoleon Hill, Miguel Ruiz, Eckert Tolle, and James Allen. I especially enjoyed his "Lesson in a Nutshell" and "A Few Profound Thoughts" sections.

This is a book that you will want to read, reread, and internalize, and then take intelligent action steps into a successful future.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for everyone from any walk of life!.......2005-09-24

This book is easy to read, has great principals to guide anyone looking to learn some of life's most important lessons from a truly wonderful, successful and generous man. As a person who loves to read and learn from self help and self improvement books, I rate this one a 10.

I am not sure what planet the previous reviewer is from, (Planet Jealousy perhaps?) my guess is he has a personal issue. I suggest he give the book to someone who will appreciate it, which shouldn't be hard. My feeling is that it makes a great gift for someone getting started in life, so that they can take advantage of its lessons.

Read the rest of the reviews to see what everyone else feels about this book.

1 out of 5 stars Stuid, stupid, stupid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-03-14

Are you people serious? I'm reading the other reviews for this book in disbelief! This book is the equivalent of taking a dictionary of quotations, typing it up with some working in between. Seriously, it would be much faster to read the dictionary.

    Don't waste your time.

Life's Greatest Lesson: 20 Things That Matter by Hal Urban
    www.halurban.com

This is an Owner's Manual for a Happy and Successful Life!!!,

Its timeless message on character education should be read by every child, parent and teacher. It is sure to become a classic.

I have given away at least five copies to family and friends!

It was awarded Best Inspirational Book of the Year 2000 by Writer's Digest Magazine.

I have donated a few select books that have been added to my local Public Library. This is by far the best inspirational and motivational book I have read so far. It contains the wisdom of the ages and essential life truths.

A few of the books I have donated are: HOW TO SUCCEED IN LIFE: Ideas and Principles They Don't Teach in School by Ned Grossman, MASTER SUCCESS: Create a Life of Purpose, Passion, Peace and Prosperity by Bill FitzPatrick, a local author from Natick, MA, FREEDOM FROM FEAR: Learn How to Live Life to the Fullest by Mark Matteson, The story of one man's discovery of simple truths that lead to wealth, joy and peace of mind, and I DARE YOU By William H. Danforth.

I highly recommend Life's Greatest Lessons, as it teaches the wisdom of the ages. This book is so wonderful, that after I finished it, I went back and re-read it again. Periodically, I will reread certain chapters again. I am very select in what I choose to donate to the library. I am donating it to the library so it can benefit the most people possible. This book on character education is a topic not normally taught in schools. It is an "owner's manual for a happy and successful life." It describes in a simple easy to understand manner, common-sense life skills that can be applied immediately to enhance and enrich anyone's life.

5 out of 5 stars My life has already improved because of tips in this book.......2003-11-15

Ever since Mr. Parrish and his staff "adopted" a 5th grade class at Hester elementary school, my daughter Pearl, one of those 5th graders, has had a white board with a list of goals in her room. As I'd walk in and out of her room, year after year, the list would morph--checkmarks would appear, items would disappear, and interesting new items would appear. This pattern was steadfast as the tide. I was so proud when Mr. Parrish asked Pearl to speak at one of his company's morning meetings. She talked about the "Better World" theory--an idea Mr. Parrish and his staff had shared with Pearl's class. Part of the concept is that one should not blame others for their predicaments, and they should take responsibility for improving their own lives. Just this one concept alone can be life-transforming. But in "If I'd Known Then What I Know Now," Mr. Parrish shares MANY tips that can help you better your life NOW. One irony of this book may be this: it is divided into lessons for different age groups (for example, 7 to 15, 16 to 25, 26 to 40 and so on). It could be hard to get your 17 year old to sit down and read the section of the book that pertains to them, because at that age, they might think they do not need any advice. Yet if they would be open to reading and internalizing the advice, their whole future could be happier!!! I thank Mr. Parrish for sharing goal setting tips with Pearl that have enabled her to chart her life's course. Pearl is only 19, and she's already been to Paris, Amsterdam, Venice, New York, Riverside, Omaha, and had her own TV show! I used to love reading positive-thinking books when I was young, and this book reminded me of those days when all seemed possible. I realized after reading his book that all is STILL possible. Since reading Mr. Parrish's book, I got reacquainted with long lost friends, I've improved at keeping commitments (I want my word to be my "bond"), and I'm reviving some goals I set aside a long time ago. Thanks, Mr. Parrish! -- Debbie Wible (11/17/3)

            Book Description

Book Smart How I Taught My Son to Read before Age Three is a reading program that teaches children how to read by 2 1/2 years old! Where most reading programs are just beginning to think about teaching reading starting between the ages of three to five, this program starts at birth. So our babies are able to enjoy the pursuit of and the fruits of early reading. Reading provides children comfort and joy both with their parents and while playing quietly. As Alden puts it: "Reading is a fun and magical experience that no child should have to be without!"

2 out of 5 stars Pushing Academics Too Early Has Real Consequences! .......2007-10-11

I am a former kindergarten/1st grade teacher. I started reading to my baby when she was 2 days old! I applaud every parent who wants to share the magic of books with their child. There are lots of great ways to talk about and explore literature together that will help your kid in school later on. That said, I think as parents we need to be very careful to not damage our kids by trying to turn them into superbabies. This is a BIG risk when you start explicitly teaching preschoolers. Even some kindergarteners are not developmentally ready to read independantly. Several countries that wait until later than that have 100% literacy rates and ZERO reading "disabilities." I personally want a creative, happy, self-assured child more than one that is academically advanced at a young age. Academic instruction too young makes your kid adult-dependant for activities and discourages them from taking risks in play and life. It actually makes them LESS likely to want to learn later, and less likely to follow their interests. If this concerns you at all, please check out "Miseducation: Preschoolers at Risk" by David Elkind. A better book for reading with the tiny ones is "Reading With Babies, Toddlers and Twos."

            1 out of 5 stars Get real!.......2007-09-26

This book contains page after page of the author's eat, sleep, and play schedules. Granted, good nutrition, good sleep habits, and a close emotional bond with the teacher/parent can enhance any learning experience, but do we really need to read page after page of schedules? Who honestly lives like that?

The author didn't breastfeed and anyone who has knows this rigid scheduling wouldn't necessarily work with a nursing infant or child.

Don't waste your money. Instead use your own intuition and knowledge of your child.

5 out of 5 stars Help yourself to a purposeful time of reading!.......2007-07-27

By reading Book Smart, I received the insight on how to have the #1 purpose of teaching and interacting be part of my grandchild's lives. Even though the Mother and Father spend the most time with their children, this book is an aid for any small child to communicate, learn, and have purpose to connect with any age.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book to have at home.......2007-07-23

It is really refreshing to see this book with its Straightfaced, matter of fact observations on kids thought and learning process. The other thing good about it, is that coming from a Mom who spent invaluable time with her son, there is a sense of "Believe-me" that cannot be had from specialists' advice. I think it is this credibility factor that will endear all readers and bring them back for several re-reads.

            5 out of 5 stars A great guide.......2007-07-21

This step by step, easy to follow guide, is a great resource for any new mother. Keeping a schedule makes transitions much more smooth with my child. The book explains how every day events like going to the supermarket or on a walk can become a learning experience!

From the supplier: A case study showed that physical education classes can oftentimes bore students as activities hardly ever change. They can also make one feel inferior as some students with better physical fitness abilities are grouped with those who have lesser abilities in physical fitness. To make physical education programs more appealing, physical education teachers are advised to make some program changes to make each session more responsive to the needs of the students.

                Book Description

Just as huge nuclear explosions result from small spheres of plutonium, the story of the Rocky Flats nuclear weapons plant near Denver, Colorado is much larger than itself. It is about the Church family, who came West seeking gold in 1861, stayed to raise cattle, watched the federal government take a large piece of its land for the weapons plant in 1951--and now is busily developing real estate in the booming suburbs next to the contaminated plant site. It is about the government and private corporations that produced the deadliest devices in history for thirty-seven years, concealed problems behind the wall of national security secrecy, and came close to a Chernobyl-scale disaster during a 1969 fire. It is about plant managers who cut corners to maintain weapons production, workers who saw themselves as loyal Cold War soldiers, and citizen activists who challenged the plant's very existence. And it is about a community that profited from thousands of jobs and contracts but now faces long-term environmental and health risks.

Making a Real Killing examines the way Americans participated in building a nuclear weapons arsenal capable of destroying the human species. To read it is to learn some sobering lessons, including the fact that the democratic process lagged decades behind technological developments.

"As Americans reckon with the legacy of the Cold War, Making a Real Killing deserves a place at the center of our attention. Len Ackland's integrity and hard work remind us how crucial energetic journalism is for a successful democracy."—Patricia Nelson Limerick

A chilling, fast-moving study of the nuclear weapons plant in the Denver suburbs, told through the experiences of managers, workers, activists, and neighbors who were all so deeply affected by the hazardous plant.

I look forward to reading this book. I was a Nuclear Engineer at Rocky Flats in the 80's. I quit after less than a year on site because I feared for my health. The plant was a mess. Everyone should read about what the cold war did to our country.

One thing I learned while working at Rocky Flats: Usually the media doesn't lie to you straight out, they just tell the story in a way that will lead you to draw the conclusion they want you to.

I have not read this book - yet -, but am very familiar with the story line, inside workings and history. They don't call Boulder, Colorado "The Peoples Republic of Boulder" for nothing.

The worst thing Rocky Flats did was to sacrifice its Patriots - its workers - over the decades, especially when the politicians wanted to cash in the Peace Dividend. My experience was: Workers were pushed out the door to avoid paying severence pay, etc.

just keep these things in mind while you read.

5 out of 5 stars My Review From Southwest BookViews Fall 2002.......2005-01-26

The specter of America's nuclear legacy hangs like a pall over the Western landscape. Nearly 15 years after the end of the Cold War, we are confronting the consequences of 50-year-old political decisions. From Fat Man and Little Boy of the Los Alamos National Laboratories to Nevada's Yucca Mountain which will someday become the repository of this nation's nuclear waste, the West has seen its share of America's atomic heritage. The perceived isolation and wide-open spaces of the post-war West were ideal sites for top-secret government nuclear installations. But it's the 21st century now and Westerners aren't nearly as captivated by the atomic age as they once were. The facilities we welcomed with open arms for economic growth are now damned for their environmental, ethical and health threats.

In this updated paperback edition of his 1999 hardcover, Ackland, Director of the Center for Environmental Journalism at the University of Colorado at Boulder, documents the complete history of Rocky Flats nuclear weapons plant near Denver. Starting from the very beginning of nuclear weapons production, he takes us through the formation of the Atomic Energy Commission, the building of the Rocky Flats plant and its administration by Dow Chemical and the Department of Energy, to present day and the efforts to clean up the plant site. This is not just a story about an infamous nuclear weapons assembly plant. This is also a story about assembly workers and middle managers who were more concerned with keeping their good jobs than what it was they were producing, as well as adjacent land owners, environmental activists, anti-nuclear protesters and, of course, the politicians.

The amount of research presented in this remarkable work is mind-boggling, and it is relayed in a clear, concise journalistic style. But one wouldn't call this an unbiased book. Ackland is sympathetic to the production workers of Rocky Flats, environmentalists, peace activists and neighboring land owners and extremely critical of the management by Dow Chemical and the Department of Energy.

The continuing threat of an atomic catastrophe haunts the Denver area as the DOE attempts to clean up the mess it let grow out of hand while it turned its back on safety for the sake of production. Certainly the most shocking aspect of this exposé is discovering what those in power are capable of doing to keep the gravy train of nuclear production continuing even in the face of endangering their own workers, neighbors, and citizenry. Plant managers were involved in cover-ups, lies, and illegal dumping of toxic waste-all in the name of continuing production. It is appalling to realize what the DOE concealed behind a veil of secrecy they called National Security. The FBI finally raided Rocky Flats in 1989, temporarily shutting down operations.

As luck would have it, due to the end of the Cold War and various arms reduction treaties, 1989 was the last year of production for Rocky Flats; its only function now is as an EPA clean-up site. The irony of it all is that more Americans will probably die from the consequences of nuclear weapons production and testing than any real or imagined threat from the "Evil Empire" or any of its successors. And the threat of Rocky Flats, even without the production of nuclear bomb components, will probably never go away.

5 out of 5 stars A case study of Cold War America.......2000-03-10

As a journalist, I'm proud of "Making a Real Killing." Its compelling attention to detail underscores its credibility. Without the detail, the book succumbs to a dull existence as an uninformed environmental screed.

As a reporter, I'm proud of the book's clear, concise explanations of highly complex nuclear technology. The workings of a nuclear bomb and the sources and effects of ionizing radiation are set forth in a clear and compelling manner.

As a storyteller, I'm proud of the fundamental organizing tools the book uses. Telling the history of Rocky Flats from the point of view of the participants in the story makes the book readable and adds a dramatic element that is effective without being cloying or sensationalistic. Also, telling the story of the land itself is a wonderful device.

As a professor of journalism, I'm reinvigorated by the book. It reflects an author in full command of his reporting and writing skills. Each semester I show one particular overhead transparency repeatedly in class: "Use more detail. Reveal more truth." I have read passages from the book to my students to demonstrate the power of carefully used detail.

As a copy editor, I'm particularly proud of the masterful editing. Believe me, I looked very, very hard for errors and even harder for ways to tighten wording or clarify organization. I found only two commas I might quibble with. The University of New Mexico Press did a superb job in designing, editing, and publishing this book.

As a person who practiced "duck and cover" in elementary school, I'm struck by the compelling arguments the book makes about the insane politics and economics of national weapons and defense policies. For this reason alone, the book should earn a Pulitzer prize.

Len Ackland produced a rich, valuable, compelling piece of book-length journalism. As a work of history, it should provide sound lessons for those who create public policy.

(Disclosure: Len Ackland served on my dissertation committee while I was a doctoral student at the University of Colorado-Boulder.)
