Book Description
Using information gleaned from German military records and archives, as well as from the unpublished diaries, notes and correspondence of the Reich's top ministers, noted historian David Irving explores the strategies, objectives and execution of Hitler's War from the breathtaking and often surprising perspective of Adolf Hitler himself. This shocking, controversial best seller stunned the European continent with its startling revelations about Germany's ultimate dictator. It is unique among biographies in its method of describing an event--WWII as through the eyes of one of the dictators himself. "What Hitler did not order, or did not learn, does not figure in this book," explains the author. "The narrative of events unfolds in the precise sequence that Hitler himself became involved in them." For instance, the first that the reader knows of a plot against Hitler's life is when Count von Stauffenberg's bomb explodes beneath the table at the Fuehrer's headquarters.
It is an unusual technique, but it works. The book sold 25,000 copies in its first UK hardback edition, and it was often reprinted (Macmillan, Ltd.) and translated. It became an approved reference work at West Point and Sandhurst, and it figures prominently in university libraries around the world, because it quotes documents that other historians have failed to find. In 1991 Focal Point, an imprint founded in 1980, published a new Deluxe edition, updated and including The War Path, the narrative of Hitler's prewar years.
Mr. Irving's other publications had by then come under a systematic campaign of attack. In July 1992, on the day after he returned from Moscow bringing the unpublished Goebbels diaries from the former Soviet archives, Macmillan's capitulated and secretly ordered all stocks of his books burned. Libraries came under pressure to pull his books from their shelves. Italian, French, Spanish and Scandinavian publishers were prevailed upon not to release their editions of the book.
The 1991 Focal Point edition incorporated all the latest archival finds, including the diaries of Hermann Goering and Hitler's notorious doctor Morell, and for the first time dramatic color photographs taken by Hitler's cameraman Walter Frentz. This new edition is further updated with evidence including the long-lost Gestapo interrogations of Rudolf Hess's staff, now in private hands, and signals intercepted by British codebreakers.

Amazing Story and Research.......2007-07-24
The book is filled with facts, names and places yet it reads like an adventure, which of course ends horribly. Before I read this book, I never really understood the thinking behind Hitler's actions and those of his staff. It takes you beyond the usual simplified history of WW2 from movies (Germans are monsters and everyone else holy) and shows how they had many internal disagreements and personal ambitions (which were often not to the benefit of the Reich) just like any other large organization/government. The only problem I had was keeping track of all the players; sometimes new people were introduced without much to help you remember their roles. Of course, you can ignore this and it's still a story that keeps you wondering what's going to happen next (even though we know the ending).
There seems to be a lot of controversy over the author but, at least in this book, I couldn't find anything that downplayed the bad side of the National Socialism. Many references are made to concentration camps, military mistakes and and corruption. In fact, it made the whole Reich sound like a dangerous place unless you were at the very top, and even then it could be risky.
I would reccomend this for anyone interested in the subject.
Objective historical look.......2007-06-30
I really enjoyed this book. If you are interested in the topic, and think you have read everything on the subject, read this book. It is refreshingly insightful and you read along as though you were watching from Hitlers view from start to finish. The key to this book was the authors objectivity. Given the strong emotional ties attached to this war in our society, the authors objectivity to Hitler is even more important.
A GREAT READING EXPERIENCE.......2007-06-18
Say what you will about Irving as a historian (I happen to think he is of the top line), you have to admit THE MAN CAN WRITE. This wonderful narrative reads like a novel.
a must read!!!!!.......2007-05-23
Don't be fooled by thinking Mr. Irving is against the jews or what happened to them in WW2. Read this book....you will see the war as it was and not as certain people want you to see it.
Well researched and controversial.......2006-05-18
David Irving is with out question the most controversial (and as of this writing imprisoned) historians of the century. I have read all of his books and I will list the strengths and weaknesses of this one in particular.
As with all of Irving's books this one is very well researched. In many cases for example he shows that some of the German Generals' claims about Hitler's strategies were wrong at best or bald-faced lies. These lies could have been exposed by earlier historians if they had taken the time to do a little research rather than quoting the same books over and over again or taken a German General's words at faced value.
David Irving's short coming in the book is that he makes documentary evidence or lack there-of as an end in and of itself. This lack of documentary evidence leads him to claim that Adolf Hitler did not order or know about the holocaust. A stance that has cost him his freedom!
Despite this short coming I would recommend his books on World War 2 as a source for the student of Hitler and the Nazis. While there is much wrong with Irving's interpretation this is much that he does get right. Certainly, this book should be used in conjunction with other works on the same subject to get a complete and balanced view of the Third Reich era.
Whether Irving is a good or poor historian he should not be imprisoned for having bad opinions.

Did Nazi Germany have designs on the U.S. long before WWII?.......2004-09-06
Hitler sometimes seemed very conceited, tempestuous and irrational in his foreign policy decisions. Hubris always seemed to be at the forefront of Nazi strategic moves. Though, records demonstrate that the Nazis did not proceed without a cohesive plan or strategy. "We work in stages..." avowed Hitler, "we will not proceed in anarchy or without a plan." Goda's contention is that the Hitler and Nazi foreign policy formulations even in the 1920s and 1930s, anticipated a "global struggle." Gibraltar and the Canary Islands would have been strategically desirable as a German base of operations if only for a European theater of operations. However, Goda contends it was Hitler's Atlantic springboard to naval might, and preparations for a transatlantic campaign against the U.S. and North America.
It should go without saying, but history tends to prove that Hitler expected no response on the part of France and Britain to the invasion of Poland. He thought their resolve was too weak to challenge him. In other words, the French and British declaration of war on Germany was a contingency the Germans did not account for in 1939. It was the contention of historian Richard Overy that Germany was seeking to become a superpower by the 1950s in his biography of Hermann Goering. So, Goda's thesis may have some truth to it.
As a practical matter, after Nazi Germany was snowed in on the eastern front encountering heavy Soviet resistance after initial success, they quickly sought armistice with Vichy France. Thus, French North Africa for the most part remained unmolested. Vichy France stood ready to defend and affirm the sovereignty of its unoccupied territory and its colonial holdings. Frankly, the Italians had little success in forging through the Alps in their campaign against the French, much less against their colonies. Germany couldn't rely on the Italians to take the helm at fighting the French, so the 1940 Vichy-Axis armistice seemed natural and inevitable. Germany itself couldn't afford to divert resources to the task. Likewise, Germany couldn't divert resources to the acquisition of French North Africa at the time. It did not seek to agitate Vichy France, since a temporal peace was deemed requisite for fighting the British and the Soviets.
Hitler did repeatedly demand concessions from Franco like a base of operations in Gibraltar and the Canary Islands, and demanded that Franco let SS units march through. Franco never would assent, because it would compromise Spain's neutrality. Spain endured a heavy toll from the 1930s war, and was ill equipped to fight against Britain and America. Spain despite having received military aid from Italy and Germany in the 1930s never proved to be a worthwhile ally of Nazi Germany. Francisco Franco hardly acquiesced in much if any of Hitler's wartime demands. He was more of an authoritarian anti-communist pragmatist than an ideologically pure fascist with the fanatic zeal of Hitler and Mussolini. Franco made some bold demands that Hitler didn't have the power or willingness to assent to, because it would alienate Vichy France. When Hitler tested Franco's resolve, Franco actually stood up to Hitler by putting Spanish troops up at the Pyrenees border, and he further initiated measures to fortify the border against Nazi encroachments. Goda never quite delves into the level of Franco's resolve as does a book entitled _Hitler Stopped by Franco_.
The book's thesis serves to legitimize the necessity of intervention against the Nazi regime. It serves to buttress the case that some U.S. conflict with a Nazi German superpower was inevitable even if the U.S. did not declare war on Germany in 1941 or during the course of WWII in our historic timeline. Overall, there is a modicum of truth to the statement that Hitler anticipated conflict with North America and sought to make long-term strategic preparations and considerations to tackle the superpower. In 1928, Hitler commented that America was an emerging economic competitor, and that "It is reckless... to believe that the contest between Europe and America will always be only of a peaceful economic nature." Goda further contends that Hitler coveted a massive deepwater naval fleet, and the reason should be apparent: Nazi Germany had to rise up to the task of challenging America with a transatlantic armada. Hitler anticipated massive expenditures on the Kreigsmarine and he sought the deployment of the Entscheidungsschlacht, or superbattleship. Likewise, the Nazis hoped to be able to crush America with an onslaught of air power. In 1938, Goering called for Messerschmitt Aeronautics to commission the Me 264, the so-called Amerika-Bomber. This transatlantic super-bomber would be able to drop a five-ton payload on NYC, and return without refueling. It was expected to be in production by 1941, though it was first tested in 1942, but never put into full development due to wartime contingencies of the eastern front.
All things considered, this is a pretty good look at Nazi foreign policy designs before and during World War II, though admittedly the author loses steam towards the end of the book. Despite an incisive introduction, I am reluctant to say he thoroughly validated his thesis. The conclusion is rather abrupt and it kind of rambles back and forth towards the end. The most damnable evidence given to substantiate the thesis is simply Hitler's quotations and revelations of plans for Nazi naval and air weaponry with a transatlantic bite. The chronicling of diplomatic debacles where Nazis seek out spheres of influence over Iberia, Gibraltor, the Azores and North Africa by inference point to a Nazi stepping stone to North America. Though, the German desire to turn the Mediterranean into an Axis Sea has its own obvious ancillary geostrategic benefit. Controlling the Med could have been effectuated by controlling the aforementioned domains. Irrespective of designs on North America, the reasons for Nazis wanting control over Gibraltar could more readily point to the desire to control the Mediterranean, so Goda could have went a few steps further in substantiating his thesis.
I give Tomorrow the World a rating of 3.5/5.0.
Hitler's transoceanic strategies a stretch.......2002-07-20
Tomorrow the World is an odd book. The title and the inside flap explain that Germany had designs on the United States, and intended to conquer said nation, eventually. The proof, supposedly, is in this book. What you get, instead, is an in-depth analysis of German diplomatic and military initiatives in Spain and northwest Africa 1940-2. This is OK, but given that it doesn't live up to what it promises, frankly it's a bit disappointing.
The proof of the author's contention is embedded in various obscure diplomatic and military maneuvers that the Germans made, often supposedly at Hitler's behest directly, which according to the author show that Hitler was intending to confront the U.S. someday. Unfortunately most of these maneuvers involved either islands in the Atlantic (the Canaries or Azores, for instance) or French North Africa. None of this certainly shows Germany preparing for war with the U.S., because all of the actions could have been taken for other reasons, equally plausible ones. So all you're left with is a recounting of German diplomatic initiatives with regards to these locations, and that, while interesting, is at best a footnote to WW2.
One further note: this book is based on the author's doctoral thesis, and it reads like it. Paragraphs run to more than a page, sentences are interminable, and often it's hard to get the point. This is not for the faint of heart, or someone who isn't interested in the subject at a very detailed level.
Interesting, but unfulfilled promises.......2001-10-30
Norman Goda's book is interesting, however there is except for a chapter or two, very scant information about Hitler's intentions toward the United States. The book loses its focus in Hitler's convoluted aims toward Northwest Africa and just what he planned to do with those bases if he ever got them, is really never discussed. However, a previous reviewer is wrong, Hitler was never a decent military tactician, he was a horrible tactician. If his generals had always listened to what Hitler ordered, Germany would have lost the war a lot faster than it did, this wasn't a case of Hitler planning just for an eventuality. Goda is very persuasive in his contention that Hitler did have a goal to attack and eliminate the United States at least since 1927-28. Unfortunately, Goda only discusses the H Class ships and the Amerika bomber in passing and never provides any evidence of just what Hitler planned to do with the bases he wanted in any attack toward America.
Hitler Attacks America!!!.......2001-10-18
Norman Goda would have us believe that Hitler was on the verge of launching an attack on the America mainland. Certainly, Hitler had grandiose war aims, and certainly conquering America was one of them. But then again, given the chance, Hitler would have turned all non-German lands into some mixture of an Aryan Disneyland and penal colony.
Any decent tactician, which Hitler was, would plan for wartime eventualities, such as a conflict with the US. Goda presents a lot of "what if's" for armchair historians to consider, but given that Hitler only ever landed a dozen or so saboteurs on American soil, one cannot say with any precision how workable Hitler's long-range plans were.
Very good in-depth analysis of German strategy in NW Africa.......1998-12-15
Notwithstanding discussion about the Germans putting long range bombers on the Azores, I'm not sure whether Goda actually proves that Hitler intended to use North African/Atlantic island bases to attack the US, since the evidence could be read to suggest that they would be primarily to defend territorial gains in Europe and Africa, still it is a very interesting book that I read all the way through. Much of it is diplomatic history illustrating the frustrations of the Germans in attempting to "square the circle" of securing the cooperation of three Mediterreanean powers: Italy, Spain, and Vichy France. Couldn't be done as they all had overlapping ambitions in the same regions of North Africa. One bit of news to this reader: Franco's Spain was at many times eager and willing to join the war on Germany's side, they just could never work out a satisfactory deal. I had thought Spain had always been reluctant to join the war.

Hitler's Germany: 1933-1939 .......2006-07-07
David Irving has painted an original portrait of pre-war Nazi Germany. He delved deeply into German archives to come up with a picture of Hitler and Germany that is off center compared to others. Irving's style is also original. He focuses on what Hitler knew and when he knew it and foregoes the omnipotence of most historians. For example, if this book were our only source of knowledge on Hitler and World War II we wouldn't know who won the war.
Irving's Hitler is an exteme nationalist and demagogue, virulent in his anti-Jewish and anti-Slavic opinions and actions, and consciously and enthusiastically in pursuit of a renewed European war. That conforms to the conventional view, but Irving's Hitler is a more complex character than the simple-minded, foaming-at-the-mouth maniac portrayed by most historians. On the positive side, Irving's Hitler is an artist and a visionary who brought Germany out of the Great Depression far earlier than did the New Deal in the U.S. and embarked on innovative construction projects such as the Autobahn. On the negative side, Irving sees Hitler as lazy and dreamy, often ineffective in his dealing with strong-minded subordinates, and inflicted with a range of psychosomatic ills and complexes. There is more of Hitler's personal life in Irving than in most books.
Whether Irving is correct in his assessment of Hitler I can't say -- not being familiar with his sources or able to evaluate them. I don't, however, find his views objectionable or beyond the pale of scholarly thought. I wouldn't recommend this book as the primary source of information about 1930s Germany, but rather as a slightly divergent and interesting view.
"The War Path" is also published in one volume with Irving's book about World War II "Hitler's War."

Love this series.......2007-06-22
I'm not sure why all the negativity...this is a very well-written yarn. I remember reading it 10 years ago, and enjoying the plot but feeling uncomfortable with the characters...yet reading it again now (at age 38) I love it. The characters have great depth, and the story is intricately interesting. It all felt very realistic to me. Maybe this is just not a story for a younger reader, or a reader who just wants action. But this is a thoughtful story, doesn't deserve the kind of panning that The Crystal Star got, certainly.
Kept making me mad..........2007-05-18
By the time I reached this book, I was half tempted to give up while I was ahead. But I must like punishing myself (or be very obsessed about reading each and every Star Wars book), because I started AND finished this one.
Pretty much nothing of consequence happens in this book. Luke is still off with his newfound girlfriend, still hunting for his mother. Han is kidnapped. Lando is having fun exploring his ship while people are dying. Leia is behaving like a whiny child. And Chewie, well, Chewie is Chewie. He is that character everyone brings into the story and then goes, "Uh, oh. What do I do with him?"
I hated how the book was divided into sections dedicated to each character. Instead of learning a bit about everyone throughout the book, you have to wait to reach each section to learn what happens to each character. Though I really shouldn't have been upset since nothing really happens to anyone, or at least nothing that won't be repaired before the end.
I won't blame the series for sounding too much like the Vong, because technically this came before the Vong. Still, I guess (???) this was better than the continuous "Oh, the Empire developed a new superpower. Luke, grab your lightsaber and help Leia and Han defeat it!"
Have I said yet this is a terrible series? Have I warned you to avoid at all cost? In case it isn't clear, buy the books to complete the set. Just don't open them!
Wow!.......2006-03-18
The book rocked. I like the parts were Luke looked for his mom. It recovered for the bad beginning. Part three on Leia just made it even better.
Better than the first.......2006-01-05
Ok so this one started out a lot better. It continued with lando's adventure, which was a great start. The author had the book devided in three sections. THe first section starts with Lando, the next is Luke's story, and the Last deals with leia. Granted the storyline with luke is still awful and he still doesnt do Luke justice he did manage to pull off a decient leia. so all in all I would say better than the first but still not up there with star wars authors like Zahn.
Horrible. This if for the people who defend this trash.......2004-05-30
This book is lousy. Its pointless and dragged out. If these 3 books were made into 1, it may be decent. But this 2nd book is just horrible.
I seen one person say "I am sorry that your limited intellect cannot stand plot development and intricate story lines"
1st of all, plot development is suppose to lead to a plot right? NOTHING HAPPENS. Lando solves nothing in book 2, Luke figures out nothing in book 2. Nothing happens.
2nd of all whats so intricate about a vessal that was made by a long lost race. Sure its in interesting ship, but it could have been wrapped up in about 50 pages. Not page after page, book after book.
Oh No, a Hitler like character in Nil Spaar. Dont get too intricate on me. Boring story.

Eric Flint and David Drake's alt-history epic devoted to real-life Byzantine butt-kicker Belisarius has reached part three--Destiny's Shield--and this installment finally busts loose with some serious head-to-head. Everybody's favorite general is leading an outnumbered Roman-Persian force to check Malwa aggression in the east, forced to action by the fiends' sea-borne invasion of the Tigris-Euphrates delta and their subsequent siege of Babylon. For those unfamiliar with the series, this what-if puts the Malwa Empire in control of the Indian subcontinent thanks to diabolical assistance from across time, granting their forces superior strategy and advanced weaponry. But the ever-canny Belisarius is equal to the challenge, with no small help from a telepathic crystal named Aid that acts as both adviser and seer.
The writing tandem of Flint and Drake still proves strong--relative newcomer Flint (Mother of Demons) seems well-paired with military-SF powerhouse Drake, creator of "the meanest bunch of mercs who ever nuked a world for pay" (that'd be Hammer's Slammers, natch). The two offer up their usual dose of meticulous historical detail and realistic, mud-and-blood combat and tactics. Throw in some time-bending fun like Belisarius's "invention" of the Knights Hospitaler and phrases like "fire in the hole," and you know you're in for a good time. (Of course, if you're new to the series, check out the first book, An Oblique Approach.) --Paul Hughes

3rd in a great series !.......2004-06-17
Great, great, great book. I especially enjoy a great series since I sometimes read 2 to 3 books a week. Very engaging, the characters are real and well developed, the plot is very interesting. I generally do not go in for alternate history but this one draws me in for some reason.
The paperback was dadgum hard to get a hold of. I finally bought one for $20 from one of the amazon resellers. Was in good shape !
I wish this pair would write school history texts..........2004-06-04
They do a good job of making history much more personable and interesting. Granted, they are writing fiction, but relying on history for a general basis. A lot more folks might like history class more if we could put them to work.
3rd book in the Belisariad.......2002-08-06
This is really a novel of alternate history, with a few alien SF or before-their-time inventions added to create plot situations for eastern Romans in A.D 531. It's a light page-turner, with something exciting, clever, or anachronistic in every chapter to make it fun. It is written in three parallel streams-General Belisarius allied with Persians to defend Babylon against an overwhelming alien-led Malwa invasion, his wife Antonina attempting to recover Egypt as the foundry of empire, and a rebel empress subverting the Malwa powerbase in the Ghats of India. There's a good balance between plot, lead characters, and military affairs here.
A number of basic cusswords are tipped in for flavor, but battle is fairly bloodless as military fiction goes, with a wry sense of (military) humor throughout. I'm afraid the authors give no organized backstory (what has happened in the previous two books) so this is not the place to discover how history was diverted from its "true" course into this alternate world. And of course there's no closure to the story. The characters have not learned something new but are simply farther along their courses to their destinys in later volumes. Most everyone seems to be a competent, tough, moral, and resourceful soldier to admire. Killers they may be, but you feel they are OUR killers. For Belisarius in particular everything always falls out right. Indeed, it had better if the overwhelming numbers and gunpowder weapons of the Malwa are to be overcome.
Another fine book in a great series.......2002-06-08
The long expected Malwa invasion of Persia has finally struck and the Persians turn to their ancient enemies, the Byzantine Romans, for help. The ex-Emperor Justinian convinces Theodora to send Constantinople's greatest general--perhaps the greatest general in the history of the world--Belesarius to help. With only ten thousand soldiers, Belisarius will have to work a miracle to survive, let alone defeat the hordes of Malwa arriving from India. Fortunately, Belisarius has been planning a miracle for some time now. The stakes are high. The Malwa are led by Link--an intelligent artifact sent from the future with the goal of eliminating any notion of talent or freedom from the planet.
Belisarius defeats a raiding Malwa cavalry force as he approaches ancient Babylon where the Persian Emperor is beseiged. In the meantime, his Indian ally, Shakuntala, has begun her own campaign against the Malwa occupation of most of India. Belisarius's wife, Antonia is sent to Alexandria to reassert Roman Imperial authority (as was often the case in historical Byzantine Egypt, religious disputes threaten Roman rule) and to create an arsenal for her husband and Shakuntala--and the nucleus for a new front against the huge Malwa armies.
Authors Eric Flint and David Drake again combine in this third novel in the Belisarius series. Flint and Drake deliver a powerful mix of military fantasy (what would Belisarius have done if he had access to effective gunpowder-based weapons), pure tactics, and touches of real historical research.
Even with the greatest general of history, the defeat of a super-intelligent artifact seems a little too easy and occasional modern themes creep in (would holy men like Michael really have been quite so broad-minded about the various Christian faiths at war with one another, and would Anthonia really have so actively worked to protect the Jews of Alexandria?) but that is largely quibbling. DESTINY'S SHIELD makes for a compelling and page-turning (or scroll-bar clicking) read.
I Love Belisarius.......2001-08-24
A continuation of the Belisarius saga doesn't leave much to be desired. The interplay of the characters is fascinating and wonderful.

This comprehensive CD-ROM provides a thorough guide to the work of three major elements of U.S. Navy research: the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), the Office of Naval Research (ONR), and the Navy Warfare Development Command. Elements of their important research, which has frequently extended well beyond the specific needs of the U.S. Navy, include materials, radar, rockets, oceanography, astronomy, space systems, nanoscience, fleet and ship innovations and improvements, sea shield and sea strike programs, sensors, bioengineering, and even neural computation.
The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) is famous for its wide-ranging research. NRL is the corporate research laboratory for the Navy and Marine Corps and conducts a broad program of scientific research, technology and advanced development. NRL has served the Navy and the nation for nearly 80 years and continues to meet the complex technological challenges of today's world. NRL has made many distinguished contributions to military science and technology and to the transition of that science and technology to practical application. Systems - Information about historical achievements in radar, communications and navigation systems. Rockets - Ground breaking NRL achievements in early space programs. Solar & Lunar Studies - A look at fifty years of NRL research on phenomena associated with the sun and recent landscapes of the moon. Astronomy - NRL achievements in the fields of astronomy and cosmic ray physics. Ocean & Environment - Accomplishments in ocean research, ozone studies, meteorology and storm prediction. Materials - NRL materials that have shaped the way we live and build towards a better future.
The Office of Naval Research (ONR) sponsors science and technology in support of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Founded in 1946, ONR today funds work at more than 450 universities, laboratories, and other organizations. From oceanography, advanced materials, sensors, and robotics to biomedical science and technology; from electronics, surveillance, and neurotechnology to manufacturing technology and information science; from advanced combat systems to other technologies for ships, submarines, aircraft, and ground vehicles-work ONR sponsored has produced the laser, the Global Positioning System, 50 Nobel prizes, and thousands of other discoveries and products used every day around the world.
Navy Warfare Development Command - The NWDC Concepts Development Department introduces new concepts to the fleet, harvests fleet ideas, and generates comprehensive dialogues to fully explore each concept's merits. In doing so the NWDC Concepts Department collaboratively develops products with selected experts to ensure that our products incorporate Fleet feedback, recommendations and perspectives. By keeping the Navy informed and engaged, both NWDC and the fleet will realize real war fighting benefits as concepts transition to doctrine, organization, training and equipment. The Navy Tactical Development and Evaluation (TAC D&E) Program is the principal means for addressing the Fleet's current tactical/doctrinal concerns. This program provides management, coordination, funding, contracting and quality control for Fleet sponsored projects that develop tactics, techniques and procedures (NTTP's) for naval forces.

ASIN: 0803975198 |
Book Description
The Internet is here. But have we caught up with all of the implications it holds for culture and everyday life? Bringing together a group of the most accomplished writers on the Internet and cyberspace, this volume presents a systematic description of the development of the Internet, its history in the military-industrial complex, and the role of state policies (such as those that lead to the building of information superhighways). Contributors examine the arrival of E-mail, explore online discussion groups, and consider the prospect of an online world. They also address the development of this technology as a commercialized leisure form and a forum for underground political organization and critique. Accessible and innovative, Cultures of Internet will appeal to students and scholars in sociology, cultural studies, media studies, and computer studies.

Book Description
Reversing a fad for studies in regulation and fixity, we highlight research that reframes and refocuses our critical inquiries on exceptions and anomalies so as to move beyond identifying disciplinary codes. This work looks to those facets of everyday life that go otherwise untapped and do not contribute to the maintenance of a well ordered whole, but instead represent overlooked alternatives and potentials.
