The psychological exposition is better here since I knew these people well. Sexuality is a constant background thread here, because that's the way people are!

If you are enthralled with the Rite's rhythm, harmony, or whatever... this is the perfect opportunity to see the orchestration and metric usage. As someone who loves the Rite, and analyzing music, this was a no brainer. Cheap and easy to read. Absolutely fantastic.
Well Worth The Money!.......2006-01-17

In 1998 I bought the original score of Le Sacre du Printemps from Kalmus for 65.00 dollars!! Although the Kalmus version in cited from numerous musicians and stravinsky himself, this version of dovers is well worth the 10 dollars!! It is pretty much the same as Kalmus' but it has no chief editor, and since its a reprint it will have the same concept as the Kalmus score, only it is 55.00 dollars cheaper. If anyone wants the 4 extra pages of the kalmus version that compares the scores, I would be happy to copy it and send them, as long as people realize that the Kalmus version as of January 16 2006 is almost 100.00. So stick with this dover version it will definately save you the money!!

It's no secret that "Vjesná Svjashchjénnaja" ("Spring Consecrated", a literal translation of the original Russian title) is an exceedingly difficult piece to understand; doubly so if all one can do is hear a recording. A score is essential for it to be fully understood - and what better way to handle this challenge than via this reprint from a Soviet edition(outstandingly accurate yet inexpensive)? Another bonus: you also get to sample some of the thinking and ideology that Communism was forcing on its people in all regards and all walks of life - outstanding reminder of what political correctness can do to us all(this warning especially meant for those who believe in it in any way whatsoever...)!! Buy this without delay!!!
Probably the greatest musical composition of all times.......2000-04-20
For anyone who loves music in general as much as I do, Stravinsky's Rite Of Spring can be, to say the least, a shockingly intense listening experience, full of strangely dissonant polytonal simultaneities, overwhelming rhythmic dephasing, and colorful details and timbristic effects that take maximum advantage of what a great symphony orchestra has to offer. This edition of the translated original score allows you a better understanding of this revolutionary musical monsterpiece, with visual complement to what your ears couldn't even consider figuring out. Sometimes it's simpler than you would imagine; sometimes it's much, much more complex. This work taught me a great deal about music composition & arranging, and the book also allowed me to write a reduction of the "Spring Rounds" for a 7-piece band.

Edain McCoy is one of the best authors on the team of Llewellyns staff of Witchery. This is one of her best books as well. The spring equinox is one of my favorite times of the year. One cannot go wrong when the yearning for youth is inherent in all of us.
This book provides the reader with all the lore and legend of this splendid time of the year. From spring flower magic to some great recipies that I have tried and wonderful lore of fairies! One simply cannot go wrong. Ms McCoy has much experience under her belt. I remember her earlier work in the 1980s!
True, to the purist out there there are many flaws. My comment on this is "let us see you do a better job". Enjoy it for what it is: a book about a magical heart!

since i am relatively new to paganism, i found this book to be informative... the most interesting part for me was when she discussed the cultural heritage of the easter bunny, the egg, spring break, new easter clothes, etc. she also gave some good ideas for ostara rituals.
however, i will agree with another reviewer, the book is badly edited. she will address a topic in one chapter, and then several chapters later, she will address the same topic, and use almost the exact same wording. (and pictures!)
be wary of the recipies. her recipe for hot cross buns is very vague, i had to add about an extra cup of flour, and i kneaded it, even though she didn't say to. not paying attention, i followed the recipe exactly for the frosting: 2 cups powdered sugar, i cup orange juice, and got a runny mess. then i realized that they probably meant one *tablespoon* of orange juice. (next time, i'll try the hot cross buns in the red plaid better homes and gardens cookbook)

One of the best books on the Great War - ever.......2007-04-04
I read excerpts of this in university, and then purchased the book as it was so compelling. I have never read anything that comes close to really giving one a true account of the soldier's experience in the First World War. The descriptions are poetic and profound, and the book puts it together in a manner that conveys the nuances of the war in ways no film or interview can - not any that I've ever seen anyway. There are still passages that stick in my head (years later) because they are so vivid and eye-opening - more so than anything else I've read or seen on the MANY documentaries and films and research I've done about this time. If you're doing research on this period - this is an excellent book. A good companion is Siegred Sassoon's Memoirs of an Infantry Officer (much more factual than the embellished Robert Graves' book Good-bye to All That. This is worth every penny and something you'll refer to again and again if you're a history buff and like to read.

This book totally changed the way I thought about early 20th Century history. Eksteins is not only ingenious in thought, but also in the way he arranges the story. This books is deserving of all the accolades it has recieved.

Professor Ecksteins' book is, on one level, a history that places the Great War in the context of the popular cultural zeitgeist that produced it. While other books have analyzed the outbreak of the war from the perspective of politicians and diplomats, Ecksteins portrays it as a popular cultural upheaval. In this way, this book distinguishes itself from other histories of the period.
On a deeper level, however, the book is a meditative essay on the problem of modernity. In a brief but elegant way, the author tells the story of how the West descended into aesthetic nihilism as it entered the 20th Century. At the turn of the 20th Century, Europe (in culture, art and thought) gave up on the prospect of reason and ethics, and placed all of its hope in aesthetics as an absolute standard of value. By abandoning the metaphysical True and Good in favor of existential Beauty, European culture freed itself to transgress all rules and restraints in pursuit of the tragic and the sublime. The author points out that this was as true on the battlefield as it was in Stravinsky. It was this cultural movement that enabled "total war" and set the tone for the century to come.
The reason this book is so important today is that modernity has not left us; indeed, it has metastasized around the globe. While this book suggests no solution to our problem, it does help to explain how we got here.

A brilliant book and one that should be read by anyone with an interest in the first half of the twentieth century. Eksteins brings a fresh and thought provoking outlook to the tired tropes about the Great War. It was the first book I read that signaled a new shift in the perspective of that war. Other writers that take off from here are Paul Fussell, Niall Ferguson and Hew Strachan. But this is the first and by far the best. Don't miss this extraordinary book.

This edition brings together - for the first time - the three early ballets of Igor Stravinsky in versions for solo piano. Intended as both virtuoso performance pieces as well as study aids for musicians, they have been carefully proofread against the orchestral scores to insure that they agree in detail. Pretrushka contains all of the music in the original 1911 version, The Firebird is a transcription of the full-length 1910 ballet and The Rite of Spring is presented in a revised form of the well-known Leyetchkiss transcription.

Quite a find!.......2004-06-17
I was very excited when I found this and even more excited when it arrived. And for good reason. I have loved Rite of Spring since I first heard it, and having listened to a recording repeatedly, I have been itching to try it out on the piano. This edition includes COMPLETE transcriptions of Firebird, Petrushka, and Rite of Spring, and the score is perfect for following along with the orchestral music since you can easily see the chords and melody. Believe me, it's much easier than trying to follow along with the mega-complex orchestral score of Rite of Spring. The difficulty level varies greatly within each of the ballets; there are extremely easy parts and extremely difficult parts. Good sight-reading ability is very helpful in all three, but particularly in Rite of Spring. And yes, the RoS transcription is the most difficult in the book; however, I get around a lot of the difficulties by cheating... you know, omitting a few notes here and there... ; )
