    Book Description

This volume tells the story of the daylight air battles over Germany through the eyes of the Bf 109 aces involved. It traces the development of the aerial defence of the Reich from its small beginnings to arguably the most savage and costliest campaign in the history of aerial warfare. The Luftwaffe pilots explain their tactics and relate their experiences - in the early days, waiting for short-ranged Allied fighters to turn back before attacking the bombers, the see-saw battle for aerial supremacy that followed, the advent of the P-51 and its devastating effect, the growing might of the heavy bomber streams and the final desperate measures against overwhelming odds. The story is predominantly that of the Bf 109's struggle to defeat the US Eighth Air Force, although latterly both the 'mediums' of the US Ninth Air Force and the 'heavies' of RAF Bomber Command were also active by day over Germany.

3 out of 5 stars another super Weal potboiler !.......2006-12-22

..another Weal title in the aces series .. While Mr Weal continues to write with a fluency (& a productivity) that I can only marvel at, Osprey production quality appears to be going downhill slightly - I didn't like the paper quality, indifferent and sometimes dark photo reproduction and in this age of superlative computer profile artwork renderings, Mr Weal's 'paintings' are starting to look a little amateurish - the colours especially are poorly printed. The text skips fluently through major events and personalities with mere paragraphs being devoted to events that otherwise fill entire books and relies a touch too heavily on Knoke's oft-cited account - at least four of this volume's 96 pages are directly extracted from Knoke's book - no credit, no footnote. The story ends prematurely with Bodenplatte and mentions the biggest Reich's defence battle of the war over Berlin on 14 January 1945 in a couple of sentences...This is not the authors fault at all but like his 'Sturmgruppen' title you can only squeeze so much into the proverbial pint pot ...a potboiler then !

2 out of 5 stars Bf109 Defence of the Reich.......2006-07-14

Book is a repeat of much of the same information other similar books contain. I found it really lacked the information/photographs of aircraft that appeared in the final days. Disappointing at best !

5 out of 5 stars Tales of Desperate Battles over the Reich!.......2006-06-08

Noted author-illustrator John Weal examines the daylight air battles fought over Germany by Bf 109 pilots in this compact, comprehensive volume, #68 in the Osprey Aircraft of the Aces series.

The missions flown by Luftwaffe units in defense of their homeland have to rank as some of the most harrowing, vicious and pivotal missions of the war. Imagine having to scramble day after day with the prospect of facing hundreds of B-17s, each armed with 10-12 .50 caliber machine guns!

To their credit, Heinz Knoke, Hugo Frey, Gunther Specht, Walter Oesau and the other Bf 109 aces discussed in Weal's book almost took the measure of their American opponents. Continually experimenting with weapons and tactics such as head-on attacks, heavier armament and even air-to-air bombing, units such as JG 1, 3, 11 and 300 forced the Americans to pause in their air campaign. Fortunately the arrival of the P-51 allowed the campaign to continue and rendered all the Jadgfliegers' previous efforts moot. The 8th and 15th Air Forces would still face some hard missions but the initiative had passed to the Americans.

Though this subject has been written about many times, Weal does a good job of summarizing a huge topic - Defense of the Reich missions date from Septmber 1939! - in just 96 pages. He covers the exploits of various units and pilots, detailing missions flown, losses suffered and victories claimed and actually scored, tactics, etc.

The book features over 80 black & white photos - I would have liked more - along with nine pages of color profiles by Weal.

All in all, a good introduction to an immense subject and very reasonably priced.

p.s. You have to hand it to Osprey. Endlessly revisiting the world of fighter aces, they keep turning out 'new slant' accounts of those fabled few. What's next: an Osprey volume on LEFT-HANDED ACES OF WORLD WAR II?

    Book Description

Undoubtedly one of the most recognizable fighter aircraft in history alongside the Supermarine Spitfire and the P-51 Mustang, the Messerschmitt Bf 109 is as popular in plastic as in real life. There are almost certainly more kits and accessories of the Bf 109 across the full range of popular scales than any other modeling subject.

This second Bf 109 title in the Osprey Modeling series focuses on the Messerschmitt Bf 109F and early G models, the workhorses of the German Luftwaffe during mid World War II.

The Bf 109 F, Friedrich, was introduced in late 1940 to counter the increasing dominance of the Spitfire, and formed the backbone of the Luftwaffe during the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. The Bf 109G, Gustav, was introduced in early 1942, and became the most numerous of all the 109 variants, as well as arguably the most streamlined.

Detailing six different builds across the scales from 1/44 to 1/24, and featuring aircraft in camouflage schemes and markings from the Western Desert to the Russian Steppes, this book is an excellent source of reference for both the beginner and expert modeler, on one of the most effective killing machines of World War II.

      Book Description

With number 17 the Osprey Modelling Manuals start a regular subseries on modelling specific aircraft types. The first covers the standard Luftwaffe single-seat fighter of the early years of WW2, the Messerschmitt Bf 109, the mount of aces such as Adolf Galland and Werner Mölders. With detailed step-by-step model photography, specially commissioned walkround photography, scale drawings and wartime shots, these books will provide all the details needed to model the main Bf109 version — the 109E ‘Emil’ — and other variants, particularly the ‘Gustav’, the most numerous of all Bf 109 types, and the strange double-deck Mistel.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive guide to Bf109's.......2000-09-18

An excellent publication for anyone interested in WWII Luftwaffe in general or in the Messerschmitt 109. A 'must have' for any modeller building BF109's. Extensive photographic coverage of all the various F,G & K models. Clearly explains the confusion surrounding the 'late' war models, and especially the AS models (ie:G6/AS,G10/AS,G14/AS) Picture quality is generally very good, with a lot of previously unpublished photographs. Overall, a high quality product and excellent value for money.

5 out of 5 stars History of the bf109 through pictures.......1997-09-17

The books deals with great variety of bf109 models produced in wartime Germany. Although this books does not includes the early 109 versions like B, D and E, it gives you a good look at all the version of the most famous models of this plane F, G and K. The book's name tells everything- it's an illustrated study, so don't expect a lot of writing. You'll see some paragraphs with info and development, but no more. What I liked the most, was pictures from technical manuals and a color photogallery at the end of the book. In conclusion, this book gives you what it promises-lots of wartime pictures of all possible variations of the Bf109.

            Book Description

This magnificent aircraft first saw action in the Spanish Civil War and by the time of the major German offensives in 1939-40 it was the Luftwaffe's principal fighter. During the Battle of Britain it provided the RAF's Spitfires and Hurricanes with their major opposition. The airplane was notoriously difficult to land because of its narrow undercarriage but during its long service career many models were developed for different theatres of operation. Over 33,000 Bf 109s were built between 1937 and 1945. They saw service on both the Western and Eastern fronts in World War II and dominated the skies over North Africa in 1941.Many air forces continued to fly them after the war, notably Spain. This is the perfect introductory book for the general reader, enthusiast and modeler alike wishing to find a succinct yet detailed introduction to the design and history of the Messerschmitt Bf 109. Why was the aircraft conceived? What was it like to fly on a mission? Who were the people who designed it and became famous for flying it? What were its virtues and vices? These and many more questions are answered here, plus a host of illustrations that show variations of color schemes used in different operational theatres and rare photographs taken when the heat was on.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great book on the 109.......2004-05-16

I picked this book up on a whim (and also based on how cheap it is - $15.95 NEW? That's unbelievable!), because I'm a computer flight-sim geek who just "enlisted" with an online squadron flying 109s. I wanted to get a good history of the craft in order to bolster my understanding of the plane I'll be spending the majority of my virtual time in.

All I can say is - wow. This book well exceeded my expectations. It has an incredibly detailed 16-page textual history of the Bf109, from its conception in 1934, through its final flights with the Luftwaffe in 1945, followed by almost 40 pages of full-color photographs of some restored 109s both on the ground and in the air. There is a close-up photo of the 109's cockpit, which really helped me to appreciate the cockpit I see all the time in my flight sim. There are several photos of a gentleman dressed out in typical Luftwaffe flight gear, going through the pre-flight checklist and taking off. Very cool.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in this plane.

Incidentally, this is No.5 in the "Living History" series of books. Other aircraft featured are the P51 Mustang, P47 Thunderbolt, the Spitfire, and the B-17, B-24 and Lancaster bombers. Based on the quality of this book, I plan on picking up the rest of the series.

            5 out of 5 stars David M........2001-08-15

This is my favorite book on the '109, and I've seen many. It has great photographs of two restored 109's. One is the Mark Hanna restored G-10 on the cover, and the other is a G-2 tropical. My favorite are the closups of the 2,000 HP DB 605D engine showing the huge supercharger and cannon. Also of note are the stories and modern reunion photographs of two aces with this plane, one being #2 ace Gunther Rall. Fantastic. To sum up, a great picture book, but with good text (14 large page small print history at front of book)...not comprehensive as far as blow by blow combat accounts, but a great look at a great plane. Thanks.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but there is better around.......2002-07-29

Though appearantly good for a novice (excuse me fellow reviewer), I have seen in the years between my sixteenth and my fortythird better books about the Bf109, offering more text, more photographs and more information to both historian and modeller. Most of these books share the distinction that they are out-of-prints (OOPs), but both the Squadron/Signal issues will soon follow. Amongst the books which in my eyes offer more are

              "Bf109, Classic aircraft no. 2, their history and how to model them" (offers a wealth of information about the early Bf109's);
              "Messerschmitt 0-nine gallery"(offers a wealth of information about the later Bf109's);
the three books in the Monogram close-up series (Gustav 1 and 2 and Bf109K) and
"The Ausburg Eagle, a documentary history",

but generally these books are bigger and therefore able to pack more information. This doesn't go up for the Monogram series, these are really much sought after!

5 out of 5 stars The one ww2 book I have read since I was 8.......2000-01-22

To put it simply you can't do a better study on a single aircraft. I have been studing ww2 aircraft since i was 6 years old (Now Im 16) and i STILL find myself going back to read it! whoever is responsible for compiling all this info on one of the most sucessful fighters in the world my hat off to you!
