Great Reference Book .......2007-10-13
This book is one of my texts for clinical herbal medicine and is a fantastic reference and resource book that I use regularly. Actually, in terms of nutrition, it is the first resource book I pick up. Thorough information on all the essential nutrients including safety issues. Highly recommended. The only aspect it lacks is essential amino acids, which is why it gets four stars instead of five.
nutritional excellence.......2007-08-28
I have grown weary of Health Shop and pharmacy employees whos expertise is limited to certain areas of medication and their interactions. I take many suppliments and could not get accurate information on interactions, and other detailed information necessary to make good informed choices. Until now. At times like this, I wish I'd gone to med school, or been a journalist, to be able to accurately and succinctly review this excellent book. Suppliments and other medications can be dangerous together, and it is imperative to be informed, so as to only take what's both necessary and healthful. At last a book that covers EVERY aspect of supplimentation, and nutritional therapy. It accurately covers interactions, ACCURATE dosage, and dangers associated. If like me, you are bombarded with information from the bottles of companies desperate to sell you their product, regardless if you really need it or not.. then this book will be a breath of fresh air for you. Nothing is left out, only pertinent information left in. A real treasure for the health conscious.

The Bible of Nutritional Supplement Information!.......2007-01-07
This is an outstanding piece of work that Michael Murray has compiled! Whether you are a beginner or an expert in nutrition, you will find this book very insightful ! In this work he documents a comprehensive list of vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, nutrients, and glandular extracts. Mr. Murray also elaborates on the functions and uses of each to provide sound education to the reader. My favorite part of the book is that he includes many different lists of whole food sources to obtain everything listed above. For instance, when he discusses Magnesium, he breaks down what foods have the highest magnesium content and what foods have the lowest. This is an extremely valuable source of nutritional information and I would recommend this book to everyone!

Frank Cooper - Australia.......2006-10-03
This is a valuable book for the layperson and professional, for the understanding of the complexities and properties of vitamins and minerals. However this book is now 10 years old and showing signs of age, and would benefit from a significant update, as some of the information is no longer applicable.
The section called "Understanding Fats and Oils" is probably the weakest link in the chain for this book, and the reader would be well guided to ignore this section. This is a shame because the effect of lipids on the human body is profound in terms of health benefits. To replace this section, the reader would be wise to read the publications written by Dr Mary Enig and Canadian Udo Erasmus, who are two of the leading research experts on the subject of fats and oils.
Also in this encyclopedia the section on cholesterol is also inaccurate. Better to read the books written on cholesterol by Swedish Dr Uffe Ravnskov, as well the recent book by Fitness Expert Anthony Colpo on cholesterol.
However as I mentioned before, this is an excellent encyclopedia, and I greatly look forward to a future update from the author to replace my well worn copy. Also a hard cover would be nice and I dont mind paying the extra cost. Whilst paperback is fine for books you read just once, hard cover is better suited to a reference book like this encyclopedia.

It was well written, with adequate references. A very helpful health supplement publication.
Awesome!!!.......2004-01-03
AWESOME book. I have been buying books, CD's, videos since amazon.com first came on line...and this is the 1st time I felt compelled to write a review. I owned a copy of Earl Mindell's Vitamin Bible, but I was looking for more. I take about 9 vitamins a day & this book answered ALL of my questions and then some. I keep it at work & use it almost daily. I like the way you can find everything very quickly. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a lot of info.in one place.
Good reference even though not up to date.......2003-01-01
I recently borrowed this book from the library. It is stock full of information, vitamins, minerals, herbs, symptoms, a little of everything. I especially liked the full explaination of vitamins and their attributes. The only thing bad about this book is that it isn't up to date with all the new herbs out on the market or new diseases and afflictions.
An invaluable, comprehensive, "user friendly" reference........2000-08-07
Do you need food supplements? If so, which ones? And how much? Nicola Reavley answers these questions and many more in The New Encyclopedia Of Vitamins, Minerals, Supplements, & Herbs. Reavley points out that we're all different, and not everyone needs supplements. She emphasizes that supplements don't make up for a poor diet. Peo0le need first to have "a good understanding of the roles played by vitamins and minerals in health and disease." Then they need to understand how supplements are "affected by your age, sex, state of health, and lifestyle. Certain supplements can be harmful to certain people." She starts with a general description of vitamins and minerals and their roles in the human body. She explains how the Recommended Daily Allowances (RDA) are calculated and how to determine if those are adequate for your individual needs. With this, she includes a discussion of what constitutes a good basic diet. In some instances, people can get all the nutrients they need from their diet, and don't need to take supplements. The bulk of the book is devoted to an in-depth discussion of each vitamin, mineral, herb, and other nutrients. Other nutrients include substances like melatonin, shark cartilage, and coenzyme Q10. She starts each discussion with a "Quick Guide" which summarizes what the supplement does in the body, sources, RDA, interactions, and cautions. She then provides a complete information about that supplement. The final section of the book is a listing of common health problems, such as asthma, insomnia, and osteoporosis, with information on the causes and treatments for each. She describes the role of diet and nutritional supplements in preventing and treating those diseases. A glossary provides definitions of terms used in the book, and an extensive reference section enables readers to do their own research if they so desire. Reavley says that "as diet has a huge role to play in the prevention of disease, eating well and consuming adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals are vital for both present and future health." She wrote The Complete Encyclopedia Of Vitamins, Mineral, Supplements, & Herbs to provide the "necessary knowledge to make informed choices about the food you eat and the supplements you take." Readers will find that she has met her goal.

Customer Reviews:
results.......1999-12-03
I tried to get pregnant for 2 years, without success. I purchased Hendler's book and made a list of what vitamins and minerals my husband and I could take to help with fertility. After 2 months on the vitamins, I was pregnant! I have also used other formulas of Hindler's, and they really work! It's also nice that he gives daily recommendations for what you want to accomplish.
Well organized, excellent resource.......1998-12-14
As we are all ultimately responsible for our own physical well-being, objective data is imperative in making informed health care decisions. Dr. Hendler's book delivers just that. I share the sentiments of the other reviewers;I signed on to Amazon hoping to find an updated version of this excellant resource. During this "herbal explosion", I have found the availability of objective and medical data on dietary supplements to be severely deficient. So, Dr. Hendler, if you're out there, we need you!
NBAF 'another must have book'.......1998-08-24
This is another must have book. First the author has nothing to 'do' with fitness or bodybuilding so you get the straight scoop. The book is easy to understand and goes into great detail. Vitamins and Minerals are covered PLUS most supplements. Want real information, get this book. NBAF 'very best'. (Hope for a update!)
Excellent resource.......1998-08-19
This book was an excellent resource for me to decipher between the hype and the scientific data on nutritional supplements. This information held a lot of credibility for me because Sheldon Saul Hendler is an M.D. and a Ph.D. I used the information in his book and mapped out a nutritional supplemental program. It worked!! I felt more energetic and healthy. I researched this book on Amazon.Com hoping that Dr. Hendler had updated the information because so much has changed since the book was written in 1991. So, Dr. Hendler, if you happen to read this, I hope you are updating your book as I would love to read about the latest research on nutritional supplements.
Very objective, both pro and con.......1998-07-24
This is a book that is written from the doctors view point, in other words you don't hear words about how a vitamin, mineral, herb is the next saviour of mankind. But when there is data supporting statements about improving memory or increasing energy or slowing the aging process etc, he will state it, and explore it. All in all, very informative, the only problem with this book is that it is 8 years old ( this was written at 07/98 ), although that does not detract from the data in the book a lot of things happen in this field in 8 years.

X PLANES OF THE THIRD REICH SERIES An Illustrated Series on Germany's Experimental Aircraft of World War II
Three Horten Ho 9s were constructed prior to war's end: the V1 sailplane, the twin 004B powered prototype V2, and the serial production prototype V3 by Gotha-Friedrichsroda. The V1 was destroyed at the U.S. Luftwaffe Aircraft Collection Center-Merseburg. The V2 crashed at Oranienburg killing its test pilot Erwin Ziller. The V3 was captured and taken by General George McDonald's Army Air Force Intelligence unit to the U.S. Luftwaffe Aircraft Collection Center. The Ho 229 V3 was eventually shipped to Freeman Field, Ohio about September 1945, and is now in storage at the National Air and Space Museum, Silver Hill, Maryland awaiting restoration. Myhra has taken 150 photos of the Ho 9 from his collection, along with several dozen digital images, and has put together a unique Ho 9 photo collection., over 150 b/w photographs and line drawings, 11" x 8 1/2"
Customer Reviews:
The origin of the B-2 Spirit.......2006-11-10
This book provides an amazing story that, while reading like Roswell, is entirely true.
The Horten Brothers were Germans; they were probably card-carrying Nazis.
But, in a more broad sense, they were memebers of an extended international family of visionary aircraft designers that included, among others, Frank Whittle, Jack Northrup, Kelly Kelly Johnson, Kurt Tank, and Mikoyen and Gurevich.
What the Horten Brothers did was create a viable design for a powered flying wing aircraft. Their work progressed slowly with perhaps as few as three prototypes nearing completion. Today, a sole Ho 9/Ho 229 is held by the National Air and Space Museum in the United States. Its construction was wood over a tubular frame. Test flights of earlier versions indicated a tendency toward instability and delmaination of the plywood surface. It was also nearly invisble to radar.
In the late 1940s/early 1950s, the Northrup B-49 flying wing was tested. It, too, suffered from instability, while being less visible to radar than similar sized aircraft.
By the end of the 20th Century, technology, in the form of composites and fly-by-wire controls made the design a success. It is the B-2 Spirit.
This book recounts the development of the Horten flying wings with a bare minimum of CGI fluff. Instead it is loaded with real photographs of the Hortens and their aircraft. While the text is spare and the overall volume thin, it is long on quality, content and truth.
If you want to know more about flying wing technology, where it originated and - by implication - how dicey the Second World War might have been if it either lasted longer or if the Germans had been more thoughtful with their R&D funding, this is the place to start.
x-Planes of the Third Reich : Horten Ho9.......2000-08-18
One of a series of Books on the subject of prototype or "drawing board" aircraft developed in Germany towards the end of World War II. Unlike some in the series, this book concentrates on an aircraft which actually flew, and in fact, is still in existence at the Smithsonian Institution. The book offers a wealth of photographs on this important, but relatively obscure aircraft and its predecessors. Particularily satisfying is the overview of the other aircraft produced by the Horten brothers and also the various versions of the Ho9 - both powered and unpowered. Of special interest are the pictures of the surviving unrestored airframe. There is not an over reliance upon computer generated pictures and for that reason I would say it is one of the best in the series.
