Book Description

Looking out a second-story window of her family's quarters at the Pearl Harbor naval base on December 7, 1941, eleven-year-old Jackie Smith could see not only the Rising Sun insignias on the wings of attacking Japanese bombers, but the faces of the pilots inside. Most American children on the home front during the Second World War saw the enemy only in newsreels and the pages of Life Magazine, but from Pearl Harbor on, "the war"--with its blackouts, air raids, and government rationing--became a dramatic presence in all of their lives. Thirty million Americans relocated, 3,700,000 homemakers entered the labor force, sparking a national debate over working mothers and latchkey children, and millions of enlisted fathers and older brothers suddenly disappeared overseas or to far-off army bases. By the end of the war, 180,000 American children had lost their fathers. In "Daddy's Gone to War", William M. Tuttle, Jr., offers a fascinating and often poignant exploration of wartime America, and one of generation's odyssey from childhood to middle age. The voices of the home front children are vividly present in excerpts from the 2,500 letters Tuttle solicited from men and women across the country who are now in their fifties and sixties. From scrap-collection drives and Saturday matinees to the atomic bomb and V-J Day, here is the Second World War through the eyes of America's children. Women relive the frustration of always having to play nurses in neighborhood war games, and men remember being both afraid and eager to grow up and go to war themselves. (Not all were willing to wait. Tuttle tells of one twelve year old boy who strode into an Arizona recruiting office and declared, "I don't need my mother's consent...I'm a midget.") Former home front children recall as though it were yesterday the pain of saying good-bye, perhaps forever, to an enlisting father posted overseas and the sometimes equally unsettling experience of a long-absent father's return. A pioneering effort to reinvent the way we look at history and childhood, "Daddy's Gone to War" views the experiences of ordinary children through the lens of developmental psychology. Tuttle argues that the Second World War left an indelible imprint on the dreams and nightmares of an American generation, not only in childhood, but in adulthood as well. Drawing on his wide-ranging research, he makes the case that America's wartime belief in democracy and its rightful leadership of the Free World, as well as its assumptions about marriage and the family and the need to get ahead, remained largely unchallenged until the tumultuous years of the Kennedy assassination, Vietnam and Watergate. As the hopes and expectations of the home front children changed, so did their country's. In telling the story of a generation, Tuttle provides a vital missing piece of American cultural history.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book.......2003-09-04

This book is an excellent interdisciplinary study of World War II and its effects on American children of that time. Tuttle uses methodologies from history, American Studies, psychology, and sociology (among others) to depict the fears, comforts, and perceptions of homefront children during the war. He suggests, among other things, that within the war generation are two "cohorts," each one based on having experienced different events at different courses during the war. How children experienced the war, Tuttle argues, affected their later lives, outlooks, and relationships with others. Although it's very much a "scholarly" work, with plenty of references to historical, psychological, and sociological theory, I found this to be a very interesting--and for Tuttle--personal book.

3 out of 5 stars "Daddy's Gone to War".......2000-06-01

For all of Mr. Tuttle's scholarly efforts he consistently referred to Franklin D. Roosevelt's "date that will live in infamy" as the "day of infamy." This book would have been far more interesting if more first person narratives had been included.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I had in Mind.......2000-01-23

When I ordered this book I was looking for an answer to my six-year-old question "where do babies come from?" From the title I thought this book would help with the uncomfortable topic of sex at a six-year-old level. The only thing this book did was preach about morals and values which I mostly agree with but are not completely true to this day and age with combined families and single parent families being more common. Plus I know how to teach morals and values I wanted something to explain the new baby in my tummy to my daughter. This book did not do that at all.

4 out of 5 stars A book about good values.......1999-11-09

This book is not for educating your child about sex, it is to teach your child values about when sex is appropriate. It seems a little wordy and not as forthright as I might have liked, but the message is a very valuable one.

5 out of 5 stars Charming book with a moral message!.......1999-04-23

I recently purchased this book for my niece and was absolutely delighted by it. The main character, Jenny had parents who explained to her what must come before making babies: deep love and marital commitment. The negative effects of not waiting for true love and marriage were emphasized also. There is nothing inappropriate or offensive about this book. It is a good stepping stone for talking to your child more in depth about sexuality. You must buy this book!

Mary-Louise Gay's illustrations are a perfect complement to Marilyn Singer's text in this book that captures a father/daughter excursion along the Esplanade in Brooklyn, New York to a T.

What will Didi see today? What will she hear today? Who will she greet today? They dance, they jump, they swish and slide...do everything but go slow...because Didi can't! She is a toddler after all!

This is an excellent book for reading out loud or sharing one on one...it will inspire you and your Didi to take a promenade of your own no matter where you live!

My daughter loves to have this book read to her. When Didi says "No" and races ahead of her daddy, my daughter shouts along. Great rhythm to the text, and the illustrations are gratifying to adults as well as children. Lots of familiar things to point out, including, tragically, the north and south towers of the WTC.

    Book Description

"When Is Daddy Coming Home?" is the moving story of one young American family during World War II. The war was coming to a close in Europe, and Richard Carlton Haney was only four years old when a telegram arrived at his family’s home, informing them of his father’s death. That moment was burned into the young boy’s memory and it changed his and his mother’s lives forever. Sixty years later Haney, now a professional historian, reconstructs his parents’ lives during the war, drawing from their letters, his mother’s recollections, and his own memories to create a unique blend of history and memoir. As the author recounts his father’s experiences in the 17th Airborne Division, he also recalls the effects of wartime rationing, scrap drives, and censored mail on his family at home.
Richard Haney is an expert on early-twentieth-century American history and on military history. Combining his personal memories and experiences with his knowledge of history, he has created a compelling, and often heart-rending, picture of life in wartime America. No one who reads this powerful story will come away unmoved.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Tribute .......2005-04-24

An amazing tribute book to both his father and his family during a time of turmoil for many many people. As said before it is a story that had taken place in towns across the United Stated, but also shows the side of Americans at home. I have had the honor of having Dr. Haney teach me in two classes and his knowledge is amazing on numerous subjects. After reading his book I hold him in even higher regard than I had before. It is an outstanding book that I recommend everyone read.

    5 out of 5 stars A Moving Tribute.......2004-11-29

When Is Daddy Coming Home is a very well written and heart moving story about how WWII impacted the author, his family and his life. The author's father, drafted later on in the war, and sent to Europe after those in his classification were determined to be exempt from the draft, was killed on a mission that didn't need to take place, after the glider he was in was hit right before it landed. The theme of the story, however, is the relationship between the author, his mother, and father. This is what we read about throughout the book, and this is what makes this story such a sentimental one. The author also reminds us that for every soldier that went overseas, there was a family, or friend waiting at home, and, many times, these people were left to carry on after the soldier was killed. I thank the author for sharing his story with us. This is a great book and I highly recomend it.

5 out of 5 stars You Will Not Come Away Unmoved.......2004-11-24

With stories of young men coming home from Iraq in coffins the timing on this book is perfect. Many books are written on the history of World War II, from big stories of the movement of great armies, to the tales of heroic acts. This is not such a tale but a simple story of a young boy in Wisconsin (but the same story took place in every state). The young boy, born in November of 1940, writes of life in America during the war. Living in a happy family he was four years old when the telegram arrived at his family's home informing them of his father's death.

His father did not die the heroic death that you make movies about, it was an ordinary soldiers death. What makes it special is the writing in this book. At once historical, memories and poignant. It is an often heart-rending picture of life in wartime America.

Don't attempt to read this book without a hankerchief at hand.

    5 out of 5 stars A touching tale.......2004-11-19

This is a sweet little family story of World War II that comes with a sad ending. You know what's coming, but it still gets you in the solar plexus, the heart and the tear ducts. Richard Carlton Haney humanizes his father, and also brings in his mother and the Wisconsin homefront (it could be anywhere), while avoiding so many of the cliches that have become common of late. The truth, including one heartbreaking picture among the many interesting pictures, is wrenching enough. The text of the actual letters to and from Pfc Clyde Haney follow the main story, and are a wonderful addition.

          Book Description

One of the most important public figures in antebellum America, Winfield Scott is known today more for his swagger than his sword. "Old Fuss and Feathers" was a brilliant military commander whose tactics and strategy were innovative adaptations from European military theory; yet he was often underappreciated by his contemporaries and until recently overlooked by historians.

Although John Eisenhower's recently published Agent of Destiny provides a solid summary of Scott's remarkable life, Timothy D. Johnson's much deeper critical exploration of this flawed genius will become the standard work. Thoroughly grounded in an essential understanding of nineteenth-century military professionalism, Johnson's work draws extensively on unpublished sources to reveal neglected aspects of Scott's life, present a complete view of his career, and accurately balance criticism and praise.

Johnson dramatically relates the key features of Scott's career: how he led troops to victory in the War of 1812 and the Mexican War, fought against the Seminoles and Creeks, and was instrumental in professionalizing the U.S. Army, which he commanded for two decades. He also tells how Scott tried to introduce French methods into army tactical manuals, and how he applied his study of the Napoleonic Wars during the Mexico City campaign but found European strategy of little use against Indians. Johnson further suggests that Scott's creation of an officer corps that boasted Grant, Lee, McClellan, and other veterans of the Mexican War raises important questions about his influence on Civil War generalship.

More than a military history, this book explains how Scott's aristocratic pretensions were out of place with emerging notions of equality in Jacksonian America and made him an unappealing political candidate in his bid for the presidency. Johnson recounts the details of Scott's personality that alienated nearly everyone who knew him, as well as the unsavory methods Scott used to promote his career and the scandalous ways he attempted to alleviate his lifelong financial troubles.

Although Scott's legendary vanity has tarnished his place among American military leaders, he also possessed great talent and courage. Johnson's biography offers the most balanced portrait available of Scott by never losing sight of the whole man.

This book is part of the Modern War Studies series.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Old Fuss and Feathers at His Best.......2002-03-16

This is a superlative bio of Scott, a man who spanned a considerable amount of time in the formulative years of the United States and its army. The events of the Civil War, and all its eccentric generals and characters have tended to overlook Scott, but his overall influence on the period can not be denied. Often eccentric, and certainly arrogant, Scott virtually created the modern US army. His regulations and drill manuels professionalized this nations army after its embarrassing and ameteur performance in the War of 1812. Scott, who fought prominently in that conflict at both Chipawa and Lundy's Lane drilled his brigade to a standard that no other American units reached in that war. He saw the need first hand to improve the army's standards and drill. Heavily influenced by French and European models, he standardized the US army and paved the ground for its development and vast improvement.

Scott was a vain and arrogant individual, he was not called Old Fuss and Feathers for nothing. Found of gaudy uniforms, and pomp and ceremony these outward ego trips belied his inner genius. Many US Presidents disliked Scotts arrogance and his virtual control of the army. Scott in turn looked upon the likes of Jackson, Harrison and Tyler as the Dark Ages in American politics!

Scott was an elitest, he was aristocratic in his outlook, and it is perhasps for this reason that he has often been overlooked in US History. To better understand the emergence of the US and the professionalism of its army, the need to understand Scott's contributions in that regard is paramount. The army he painstakingly created all through the first half of the 19th Century saw final fruition in the Mexican war of 1846. Here Scott's brilliant generalship and strategic outlook ensured his success against the Mexicans. The army he created not only could outmaneaver the enemy, but could outfight them as well. In every major action, the US Army inflicted two or three times the losses on the Mexicans, even while the latter were often defending in fixed positions. All the future greats of the Civil War, Grant, Lee, etc. acknowledged Scotts genius. The Mexican campaign was a model for all to follow. Sherman's march to the sea was certainly inspired by it. In order to have a greater undertanding of the Civil War, and antebellum American in general, we should not neglect the contributions of Winfield Scott.

Timothy Johnson's biography is probably one of the most satisfying bios one can ever read. Unlike most bios it does not get bogged down with excessive details pertaining to an individuals life. Johnson keeps Scotts life and career moving at a comfortable pace, with ample time for reflection on the times he lived in. We see the great general in all his strengths and weaknesses. Johnson accomplishes this in a leisurely 240 odd pages, far more satisfying than many bios we encounter today which feel the need to be twice this length most of the time. In short, I cannot recommend this work highly enough for its depiction of the man, and the times he lived in.

4 out of 5 stars Academic writing at its best.......1999-11-20

It's ironic that after 60 years, two biographies of Winfield Scott appeared almost simultaneously. John Eisenhower's Agent of Destinyattracted more attention, but Johnson's book is by far the more satisfying of the two. A professional historian, Johnson places Scott within the context of his time, giving the reader a better appreciation of the general and his place in 19th century American history. I read both books, and I have to say I was surpised to be disappointed with the Eisenhower book as much as I was. I liked his book on the Mexican-American War "So Far From God", but I think he overreached with this one. He focuses on the man, while Johnson focuses on the man and his times. In doing so, it gives a more complete and ultimately more satisfying account. Highly recommended!
