More Exercises Needed! - But Great Information.......2005-09-14
Although this book was not what I had expected it to be (i.e. a detailed book
with many pages devoted to breathing exercises e.g. paced breathing techniques etc)
I did not regret the purchase, in fact I was very impressed.
The reason why I rate this work so highly is because it offers a fresh perspective on
dealing with so called psychosomatic/psychophysiological ailments e.g. panic attacks, phobias
including headaches, migranes, hyperventilating, gasping for breath, Raynaud's condtions,
cold hands etc. The idea that irregular breathing patterns are at the heart of most disorders, although not surprising, is explained extremely well in terms of acid-base levels in the blood.
The primary topic dicussed in this book is hyperventilation. And as an Asthma sufferer I did
not think this work would be useful to me (since I usually struggle to get any air let alone overbreathe!), but I was very wrong!! This book was a great buy, because I now understand
the driving factors for my breathing difficulties from a scientific point of view.
i.e. inhale/exhale ratios, CO2 levels, warms/cold hands etc.
I only have 2 criticisms, the last chapter about Music and Breathing seemed a little out
of place and mostly irrelevent. And secondly there isnt much on breathing techniques,
the only thing that is covered is deep diaphragmatic breathing (whist in the sitting position)
- which is great if thats all you want!
5 stars for information/nutrition/theory content
2 stars for practical exercises with deep breathing
Save your money this book is a fraud.......2003-12-04
I buy many books, never before gave up reading a book just within 30 minutes of browsing through various chapters looking for substance. I'm a person who has recovered from major depression which also entailed daily anxiety attacks and hyperventilation. I overcame my affliction by sheer will power through enormous love that I felt for my family and myself. I did that through redirecting my energy to change the things that I didn't like in my life. I also accomplished that through drastic change in my diet and through daily exercise for the last ten years. I was looking for a book to teach me better breathing, because by nature I'm a person who gets to excited in reaction to anything. This is a guy who one day decided to write a book by exploiting the most obvious things. The book is made of many anecdotes and repetition of many facts most people already know. Never before did I wish to return a book and ask for a refund. This time I do. This book will not go into my library, but it will go where my daily junk mail goes, the trash. .
A good interdisciplinary book.......2002-10-01
This book is good because it emphasizes breathing techniques to attenuate stress-induced conditions (ex. Asthma, Anxiety). But again, as with most stress books, it falls short on recommending proper nutritional supplementation. Most Asthma books don't recommend any holistic/herbal remedies; they only recommend pharmaceutical drugs. A few Asthma books like these do recommend natural remedies, but these remedies are often unproven, and can be dangerous if mixed with other drugs/alcohol. I am really disappointed in all Asthma books in general, because they most often do not recommend the three most important ORTHOMOLECULAR Asthma remedies: Calcium, Magnesium, and Vitamin C. Calcium is simply there to balance magnesium and to chelate with ascorbate (vitamin C) to make calcium ascorbate. Magnesium relaxes lungs and improves air flow. Last and certainly not least, vitamin C has potent antihistamine effects via inhibiton of mast cell degranulation, and also has bronchodilator effects via inhibition of phosphodiesterase. Taking several grams
a day of vitamin C (preferably buffered calcium ascorbate), along with some magnesium may completely inhibit mild asthma, and should significantly help moderate to severe asthma, with no known drug interactions (except perhaps with Theophylline, which inhibits the same phosphodiesterase enzyme that vitamin C does). These three natural supplements also play very important roles in maintaining mental health. This information is referenced in the Allergies/Asthma chapter and Chronic Mental Illnesses Part of my book "The Failures of American Medicine", available here at Amazon...
Basic, Easy to Read Golden info, From A World Expert.......2002-05-03
There are a lot of books on breathing. This is probably the only one aimed at laymen that has been written by a world class respiratory psychophysiologist who has written numerous professional texts on various aspects of respiration.
Great book with practical info that DOES work!.......2000-03-26
After learning the author's breathing techniques, I have been able to relax more and get to the heart of my symptoms. Easy to follow and comprehend. No outer-worldly stuff here, just factual information regarding how breathing correctly will eliminate many of the stresses in your life. I highly recommend this book!

Most asthma books focus on the physical impact of this disease and only briefly discuss the effects it can have on your lifestyle and sense of well-being. Living Well with Asthma addresses this issue in detail. Through anecdotes from asthma sufferers, the authors dispel myths and correct faulty assumptions using a simple four-question formula. To further topple self-defensive barriers to accepting and dealing with the disease, one chapter identifies the basic defense mechanisms people use and provides guidelines on how to overcome them. Subsequent chapters concentrate on practical advice for specific issues, such as handling asthma's effects on sex life, creating a more supportive family environment, and matching yourself to the best physician.
Book Description
Asthma is a medical problem, but it can have a powerful psychological impact as well. If you or someone you love has asthma, this book will help you "breathe easier" about the challenges it poses in relationships, at work, and in everyday activities. From social embarrassment, to anxiety, to feelings of incapacity and low self-esteem, each chapter is packed with real-life stories of commonly encountered problems/m-/and step-by-step strategies for solving them.

Living well with Asthma.......2000-06-22
This is a great book, very down to earth and practical. It is intended mostly for adults suffering from asthma, but I think it would also be good for family members to read and it gives information on living with children with asthma too. The authors focus, not on the medical aspects of asthma, but on the day to day lives of asthma sufferers and how they can better handle problems in such areas as sex life, family relationships and work. The authors give concrete examples of specific problems and easy to understand solutions. They also give many case illustrations from their work with asthmatics. Most importantly, the book is easy and interesting to read. I was able to pick it up and read just the sections I most wanted to know about without feeling lost. I strongly recommend this book to asthma sufferers and their friends and relatives, as well as to health professionals who want to get a clearer picture of what asthma sufferers and their families go through and how to help them.

Book Description
Introduces readers to the disease of asthma, its causes, how it affects the body, and what it's like to live with the disease.
Book Description
Dividing the nation and causing massive political change, the English Civil War remains one of the most decisive and dramatic conflicts of English history. The Causes of the English Revolution examines the factors leading up to the deposition of Charles I in 1642 and analyses the crisis of confidence at the root of his demise. In this seminal work, Lawrence Stone explores theories of revolution and traces the social and economic change that led to this period of instability. Now with a new introduction by John Brewer (author of The Pleasures of the Imagination), this classic text is essential reading for all those fascinated by the fraught battle for power between Charles I and Cromwell.
Customer Reviews:
When reforms turn revolutionary..............2004-10-06
In 1640 few supported the dissolution of the monarchy or the House of Lords...The heart of this book is its long chapter on the causes of the English revolution. That revolution, Stone maintains, was in a real sense caused by the dissolution of government (rather than causing its dissolution); that "class" warfare along Marxist explanatory lines is not applicable to the revolution and; that the revolution was more than a reaction to unpopular monarch. He then sets out to identify the long-term, underlying causes of the war and its more proximate catalysts. His discussion of the weak reach of the Tudor bureaucracy and its corresponding lack of credibility as a legal enforcer, and his discussion of the impact of Puritan thought are especially compelling.
The first section of the book surveys the methodological issues involved in explaining revolution. This survey, though somewhat dated by now, still provides useful insights. And, he has a caustic eye for those of his colleagues who prefer an arid, artifically technical jargon over clarity and concise prose.
Book Description
What were the causes of the English Civil War? In recent years, traditional explanations involving the struggle for sovereignty and the bourgeois revolution have been increasingly questioned. Conrad Russell's new analysis brings into focus fundamental religious and constitutional issues of vital importance to contemporaries, but until now neglected by historians. Basing his study on extensive research among both printed and unpublished sources, Professor Russell highlights the constitutional problems of multiple kingdoms within Britain; the religious problem of competing theologies within and outside a state church; and the economic problem of the inadequacy of royal revenue to meet the needs of the monarchy. In order to understand the events of the 1640s, he traces the story of the church and state back over the previous century. This is the fullest account yet available of the origins of one of the most significant events in British history. It will be essential reading for all students of the seventeenth century. Contents: The Corpus Delicti 1637-1642; The problem of Multiple Kingdoms c. 1580-1630; The Church, Religion, and Politics: The Problem of the Definite Article; The Church of England 1559-1625: A Church Designed by a Committee?; Religious Unity in Three Kingdoms and in One 1630-1642; The Rule of Law: Whose Slogan?; The Poverty of the Crown and the Weakness of the King; The Man Charles Stuart; Conclusion; Appendix.
Customer Reviews:
Intelligent book...but torture for a college student.......2003-03-16
You need to be familiar with the names, dates, places, etc of the English Civil War before you try to read this. Russell's "Multiple Kingdom" thesis is good, but he seems to overlook population and economic causes -I don't know for sure because I may have slept through those pages...not that I SHOULD have slept though them of course! It would have been a much more engaging book if I loved the English Civil War with all my heart.
Clear, concise, thorough.......2000-06-30
This is easily the best book I've ever read on the immediate circumstances of the English Civil War. Russell has proven himself consistently to be a brilliant Civil War scholar, and doesn't fail to do so here. In this slim volume, he ties together the unrest in all three kingdoms of Great Britain, religious conflicts and ambitions, the character of Charles I, and royalist and parliamentary ideals to explain the Civil War in its immediate context. Although he goes as far back as the Reformation to establish some long-term background, Russell pretty much concentrates on the events of 1642. Combine this with his Fall of the British Monarchies (a larger, more expansive, and ultimately much less readable book) and you have a pretty good coverage of all the angles in explaining the Civil War.

Must reading for understanding the issues behind war........1998-08-06
The POLITICS OF DISSOLUTION is a collection of late antebellum US Senate speeches which exemplify the official statements of the public men from the South, North, and West as they struggled with the questions of national identity and the right of self-government. Partisan politics, slavery, secession, empire-building, religion, culture, and fiscal policy are among the issues debated as Americans approached the brink of national catastrophe.
Book Description
The causes of the English civil war have provoked fierce controversy amongst historians ever since the seventeenth century. This book is intended as a guide and introduction to the massive outpouring of scholarship, including discussion of revisionist and post-revisionist work.

Book Description
This book provides students with the essential background to the English Civil War and to the historical debates surrounding its causes. Historians have argued about the causes of the English Civil War for over three centuries and recent revisionism has focused on the question of whether short-term or long-term changes could account for the war. The author discusses the pitfalls of arguments about causation; analyzes the events which preceded the war; provides a detailed examination of the areas of possible long-term conflict; and assesses the different explanations offered in the light of recent scholarship. The Causes of the English Civil War is an ideal introductory text for students of this period, bringing the latest arguments to bear on this popular subject of study.
