Good but could be better.......2007-02-06
The recipes in this cookbook look delicious if somewhat complicated. I haven't had the book long enough to try them. However, one very important piece of information is missing from these recipes; serving size. I'm sure that there are programs which show this. In fact, I'm so disappointed that I would be willing to pay for a list of portions so that I might add this information to my favorite recipes.

Well-Designed and Easy to Use!.......2007-06-09
When Lifescan -- the manufacturer of my blood glucose meter -- stopped printing their free log books, they recommended that I try this one.
They were right: the format is so clear and easy to use. The way the pages are set up naturally flows with how a diabetic has to keep notes and test throughout the day. The colors and symbols used in the daily charts look cheerful and take a lot of the drudgery out of my daily record-keeping. Plus, the special sections for eyes, teeth, and feet have me paying better attention to my whole diabetes care. This is a quality log book -- well worth the price -- and I would not hesitate to recommend it other people with diabetes!
This Book Is A Must-Have for Diabetics!.......2007-04-23
My sister has been dealing with diabetes for several years now, so I bought her this book, hoping it might help. Well, it sure did! Before, she was so frustrated, because keeping track of her info was a real struggle. But now, with this WeeklyTrack book, her glucose readings have improved because she is managing her diet much better. She said it has helped her to figure out which times of day it is better to eat certain foods, and when is the best time to take her daily walk. Her doctor has been able to help her more, because he can look at the book and see how she's doing in between visits. We recommend this book for all diabetics!
By the way, if you are a family or professional caregiver, you might also want to look at Daily CareLog (The Complete Caregiving Diary), a caregiving log book by this same publisher.
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Not very complete (or accurate) after all.......2007-07-09
I was very recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and need accurate information on grams of carbohydrates to determine my insulin use. I had to send this book back - the nutritional information was incorrect for the couple of recipes I looked at (For example, one recipe stated it had over 100 grams of carbs. I couldn't tell if it was missing a decimal or what the problem was. Even if that was the carbs per recipe rather than per serving, when you divided it by the # of servings it still ended up being more carbs than most diabetics should eat at a meal).
In addition, the majority of the recipes were for desserts - which doesn't make a complete meal in my diet!
Even My Husband Loves These Recipes.......2007-03-29
When I was first diagnosed with Type II diabetes, although my husband was quite supportive, his first thoughts were of how were we going to change our eating habits. So I went to Barnes & Noble and browsed through their books on Diabetes. This one had so many wonderful recipes in it that I knew I could incorporate into our lives and bring at holiday gatherings. The sweets are wonderful and many times if I don't tell people that they are diabetic, they are unable to tell. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is or knows someone who is diabetic.
Complete Diabetic Cookbook.......2001-10-16
By Finsand, Caldwell, and White - This book has thousands of recipes and they are good. I don't think I will ever grow tired of using it. However, if you or someone you are cooking for has just recently been diagnosed with diabetes, this is not the book to get you started. It does have useful charts, but it has very little educational material about the disease. I would recommend this book as a companion to a book with comprehensive information about diabetes. I think the most prominent chart in the book deals with sugar substitutes. (The Simply Gourmet Diabetes Cookbook by Mary Donkersloot is a great place to get started. With this book and the book you are reading about, youu will never lack in information and choices.)
Personally, I would prefer less recipes about desserts. There are hundreds and hundreds of these recipes. I've never really craved daily deserts or sweetened foods. After spending time in the hospital, and meeting other diabetics, this may be exactly what you need, though. Some people do eat sweet dishes frequently. I plan to use these recipies in cooking for my aging parents and myself, in order to provide things that we can all eat. I doubt I will use more than a portion of this book in my own home.
Better than most 'Regular' Cookbooks.......2000-07-01
One would not know that these recipes were designed for a diabetic, until they looked at some of the ingredients. These are tasty, flavorful, and creative recipes for the whole family, designed to lower the sugar/carbohydrate intake grams for diabetics. The recipes are simple, and made with the 'usual' ingredients with the exception of the sugar substitutes. And, there are handy conversion charts that show how to convert 'sugars' to sugar substitutes.
Anyone will enjoy the foods that they make from these recipe's. This is truly a 'gourmet' cookbook, with literally thousands of recipes for everyday living. There are entree and side dish recipe's, but my favorite section are the hundreds of 'dessert' recipes. You have to try those Cream Puffs!

Thank you.......2003-03-21
I have been so busy reading. Sorry I didn't rate sooner.
A simple classic!.......2001-11-02
We'd bought this book when it originally came out and it became so worn and well-loved that I just purchased the new version. It is just as fantastic as the original! The recipes are simple (but not boring) and very flavorful. The whole family enjoys them!
Old news, not good news.......2001-08-21
This is an older book that in no way represents the new diets for diabetics. Using the old ADA diet is not a way for most diabetics to prevent high blood sugars or other problems that can happen down the line. The new diets for diabetics using low-carb diets is very important. American people did not get fat eating low carb but did do so eating a diet much like the ADA high carb diets. Even the ADA is in process of preparing a new diet guidline based upon low carb diets and not an exchange program.
The Complete Step-By-Step Diabetic Cookbook.......2001-01-03
This book offers quick, easy and delicious recipes for diabetics and nondiabetics. I use it often for home, as well as for dishes taken to outings.
The Complete Step-By-Step Diabetic Cookbook.......2000-02-18
This is really a great book. The meals are easy to fix and delicious. This book is my Bible. I can look at the recipe quickly and decide if it is within my carb count. I would recommend this book to anyone with diabetes.

Customer Reviews:
Deceiving and disappointing.......1999-11-27
For those of us who need to limit our intake of fat to 2 grams or less per meal, this book is a huge disappointment. Now if it hadn't advertised itself as 'low fat' I wouldn't have had any gripes, but if you look in the forward, the book itself states that by low fat the authors mean '3 grams or less' yet there are recipes in this book containing a whopping 21 grams per serving. Furthermore, only about 1 in five that I could see flicking through it were within my range. Very disappointing! Had I flicked through it in a bookstore I would have passed it by. Be warned.
Easy, quick recipes.......1999-06-09
This is a great cookbook for anyone who needs to cut back on fat and calories...I follow Richard Simmons food plan and this book fits perfectly with his Move, Groove and Lose program. The recipes are quick and use things you will most likely find already in your kitchen.
Easy, quick and delicious recipes.......1999-06-05
This is a great cookbook. The recipes are easy to follow, use items normally kept on hand, and are delicious. I recommend this book to anyone who likes fast, easy cooking.

Product Description
In 1890, the U.S. government declared the frontier settled, and the Wild West was history. In the territory of New Mexico, however, crime still knew no limit and the gun was the final answer to all problems. Aware that New Mexico would never achieve statehood without effective law and order, its leaders decided they needed a mounted police force like those that had tamed Texas and Arizona. This book describes the birth of the New Mexico Mounted Police in 1905 and tells the stories of the members of the original Mounties, starting with their first captain, John F. Fullerton. It details the many challenges of their first year of operation and offers an inside look at a territorial police force in action. Information drawn from personal interviews with ranger family members (many of whom provided photographs), Fullertons personal papers and official Mounted Police records brings a wealth of detail to this story from New Mexicos rich history. Fred Lambert, the last surviving member of the territorial rangers, provides a foreword.
Customer Reviews:
New Mexico's Rangers get their due.......2006-04-29
The author has been writing about the New Mexico Rangers for well over thirty years, and this book is a culmination of his long immersion into this subject. What writers like Bill O'Neal and Robert Utley have done for the Arizona and Texas Rangers respectively, Hornung has now done for the New Mexico Rangers. With research into official records and personal papers, interviews with ranger descendents, and a passion for having these men remembered accurately, Hornung has shown how the Rangers helped to make New Mexico a secure state for settlement.
The Foreword to this book is a treasure that will stand by itself, a 1969 letter written to Hornung by the last surviving New Mexico Territorial mounted policeman, Fred Lambert. Lambert was a living repository of stories of the various rangers the author writes about in the book, and the old Ranger has pithy comments about them, about the "tough business" of law enforcement in his day, and the need for a lawman to have a "quick trigger finger." Movingly, Lambert conveys his pride in having been a New Mexico Ranger. He ends by giving Hornung some good old-fashioned advice about looking men in the eye. He asks Hornung to tell the unvarnished truth, with no dime novel heroics, and to tell how those early policemen had a job to do, and "just done it."
Fullerton's Rangers is about the origins and especially the initial year, 1905, of the New Mexico Mounted Police. The early chapters of the book provide geographical and historical context for the Mounties' story. He tells of New Mexico Territory's reputation as a lawless land, its vast mountains and its unforgiving deserts. He writes the role of women in the era, about relations between the Anglo and Hispanic communities, and of its political factions and violent history. The passage to statehood was not easy. Nor was the enactment of the Mounted Police Bill that constituted the force that changed New Mexico's lawless image.
Fullerton, Governor Miguel Otero, and each of the original members of the force are sketched at length as to their history, character, and accomplishments. Fullerton, who became the leader of the Rangers, was a complex figure of considerable strengths and weaknesses. He suffered a political meltdown, costing him his job. He was replaced in 1906 by Fred Fornoff, a former Rough Rider, at a time when ex-Rough Riders were being promoted by President Theodore Roosevelt for such jobs.
Hornung writes with great care and passion about the hardships and accomplishments of each individual ranger. The longest chapter is a narrative of manhunts and arrests, successes and failures, and dangers faced by each individual ranger who served under Fullerton. There are sections on uniforms, weapons, badges, even use of the then new-fangled Gillette safety razors. The author writes about what seems an incredible miserliness and penny-pinching by the state fathers, and about conflicts between the rangers and resentful local law-enforcement authorities. Yet somehow Fullerton made it work. He got the most out of his hard living, hard drinking force, hard fighting force, suppressing the plague of cattle rustling and other crimes. It seems hard to argue with the Hornung's conclusion that Fullerton's Rangers have been misunderstood and underrated, and that they fearlessly blazed a trail of law enforcement for the men in the motorized flivvers who followed, and their successors today.
