Helped dd loose weight without trying - .......2006-07-20
How much damage did my parents do to me by making me "clean my plate" because "there were children starving in Africa!" Urgh. After 20 years with a weight problem, I'm finally getting it under control (with the help of WW) A few months ago - I realized that dd was heading towards obesity herself - and I was helping her ! After reading this book, incorporating some of the suggestions, she lost 10 lbs over the past 3 months, without even trying. Definately urge an overweight parent to read it before putting a child on "a diet" or otherwise limiting food. So glad I did before I made the same mistakes with my other 3 children!

I am thankful that we found this book early enough in my daughter's childhood that we can implement the suggestions and really make a difference in her life. I have struggled with obesity my entire life, and my daughter appears to have inherited my genetic makeup. I learned from this book that many of the things my husband and I were doing WERE harming her and setting her up for full-blown obesity in the future. This book has helped us develop a more relaxed environment around eating, and we now have sit-down family meals for every meal we have at home. That is a key component of the whole philosophy, and even though we knew that was important in the same way that everyone does, we didn't make it a priority until after reading this book.
Life-changing for my whole family.......2005-09-14
I stumbled on this book while searching for family meal plans. What a revelation. We have one child who we have worried over for years regarding her eating habits and high weight. My husband actually picked up this book and read it cover to cover and, uncharacteristically, led the way in a radical change about how we think about meals and food in our household. This book is full of common sense for families who may be struggling with a child's weight problem. The basic idea is so ZEN--stop controlling, stop struggling, stop worrying and you change the very nature of the problem. Now we're no longer trapped in the double standard of telling one kid to stop eating and the other to finish her food. We're seeing our picky 3 year old actually grab a carrot on his own!! My overeater pushes back from the table when she's full and doesn't crouch over her plate like a famished animal. My middle child is learning to sit in her chair and enjoy the food that is available instead of asking for alternate meals. My husband and I actually have time to catch up with the kids. And I have been able to look at my own eating patterns (and their origins) in a new way. This is a profoundly wise book and I'm so grateful to have discovered it.

In the age of chronic dieting, increasing obesity, and an epidemic of eating disorders, Ellyn Satter's approach to feeding children makes sense! As a former dieter myself, I know dieting does not work, so to impose a "diet" or restricted form of eating on my children doesn't make sense. Ellyn Satter explains in a common sense and non-judgemental way how to stop "restricted feeding" behaviors and allow children to regulate their food intake. Parents are responsible for providing a variety of food, (including food that some people may feel is off-limits, such as chips and cookies)and children are responsible for deciding what and how much to eat. Satter also strongly emphasizes the importance of family meals. It was a tremendous relief to me to hear that I don't have to control the amount that my children eat - that they can be trusted to regulate their own food intake and to grow in a way that nature intended for them. Satter emphasizes that it is OKAY not to be "skinny" and that some children are just larger than others - and it's normal and healthy for them. Satter has a common sense and loving approach for parents of children who are actually at an unhealthy weight to help them get back on track. I wish I had read this book when my children were infants - I would very highly recommend it for any parents who have weight or food issues of their own - read this book before you pass on those issues to your children. I thought I was "over" my own issues and still managed to pass them on! This book should be required reading for parents who are "dieters."

Learning Joy from Dogs Without Collars is about my memories of growing up, being raised by an eccentric and uniquely idealistic single mother. It is about how I was sometimes homeless and lived in shelters and in one apartment after another. It is about adventures my mother and I had, including moving across the country -- from Astoria, Oregon, a small coastal town, to Boston, Massachusetts, a bigger city on a different coast. Bravo! a well written memoir. Thank you for taking the time to write about your life. I enjoyed the progressive chapters ---Lauralee's unique dance of life. I am sure it wasn't easy. You held my interest and my heart, Bravo to your mom--cause she was the backbone to your success.
A very interesting novel, especially if you have a teeenager involved in wrestling. Imagine! the only female on the wrestling team at Harvard. Again, thank you for writing your story.

A pleasant read over all...........2005-10-20
I thought this book was enjoyable to read. Say, a decent book to read in the park on a nice afternoon. Nothing too intense. It was a little slow in the middle, but still had enough interesting stories to keep the reader going and find out what happened to this young woman. It picked up the pace toward the end, almost putting off too much for the end; the intense reunion with her father, graduating Harvard, and plenty of wrestling team metaphors for her growing self-realizations -- all within the last few chapters. Compared to other books I've read, it wouldn't be a 5-star because it wasn't particularly life-altering, funny, witty or original. A well-rounded 1st novel for Summer though.

This is one of those books that was hard for me to put down. I think I read it over a period of 1 1/2 days. However, I felt that Lauralee skipped over a lot of things. I hope that she writes more about her life. I can't help but wonder what life has in store for her!?!
Immensely moving.......2003-12-09
Lauralee Summer's memoir moved me beyond words. It is so uplifting to read stories like hers that show the resilience of the human spirit.
Despite her very unconventional childhood, Lauralee's mother was very loving and supportive within her capacity to provide for her brilliant daughter.
An earlier reviewer mentioned her father. This chapter moved me more than almost any other. If there was ever a person who regretted his earlier behavior and genuinely tried to make it up, then her father would get my vote.

A woman and her infant daughter, chronically transient and homeless...the mother (an unsung champion) makes love, tenderness, knowledge and wisdom available to her child in small ways, whenever and however she can; one or two important people at critical moments, and the bright, irrepressible child grows up and goes to Harvard.
There is a tender innocence throughout. A protective telling of the author's story. The love between the mother and the child...the anguish felt over their circumstances...never maudlin, always sweet...intimate sadness, a tender grief...an un-self-pitying resolve. I sensed all of these feelings and ideas on almost every page.
And, finally, the child becomes a young woman, intelligent, strong and loving.
I think of this as more than just another Horatio Alger story.

Nancy Drew this is NOT. If you are a fan of the old series, the Files Series, even the the Notebook series, you will really hate this new incarnation. Never have I seen a publisher try as hard to alienate fans and try to disolve a classic children's series as they have with this new detective they call Nancy Drew. Where is our girl sleuth? Well, in this version she is forgetful, annoying, childish, and lacks direction, focus and intelligence. Her relationship with her father has become somewhat trivial. Her housekeeper is on the verge of senility. Her best friends, Bess Marvin (now a mechanic) and George Fayne (now a computer geek) have totally changed focus and drive. And Ned, her constant steady, is only a brief mention. I am appalled and disappointed in the first 15 books of this series and have found no redeming value to it as a work of fiction let alone as a sorce for the continuation of this much loved series. If this is how the publishers wish the direction of Nancy Drew to proceed in the future I would say to them 'stop the series' and let the past editions stand on their merit without tarnishing its reputation as a hallmark in series books. This is not what Edward Stratemeyer and his family envisioned Nancy Drew to become. I am disappointed beyond belief.

Squashed squash...a missing family heirloom...can Nancy Drew, River Heights' infamous teen detective, get to the bottom of this one? In this story, we follow Nancy, along with her best friends, Bess and George (Georgia), as they try to solve TWO mysteries at once! So far, there is barely enough information to get a good lead on either case...and the more days go by, the more squash is squashed, and the farther away the valuable egg could be traveling from River Heights. But Nancy has a feeling...a feeling that the criminals may actually be close by.
I have to admit, I don't care for old things. Don't ask me why, I just don't. I've always sort of wondered if I'd like the "Nancy Drew" series, but I was never eager to give it a try. When my mom recently mentioned that a lot of readers love the "Nancy Drew" series, I remembered reading in a magazine that a new line of books about the blond detective just came out in 2004. I bought the first book, excited to give it a try, and loved it! Almost every chapter ended with a cliffhanger that made me immediatly move on to the next one...actually, I was so curious to find out "whodunnit" that I could hardly put the book down! The writing was so descriptive, and the story entertained me, while also keeping me in suspense. I'm so glad I gave this series a chance, and I can't wait to get a hold of the next book! I recommend this series to all girls!

Over all I think Without A Trace was an okay book. I liked it because it is very exciting and keeps you out of your seat. It is fulled with suspence ( though it does go back and explain everything at the right times). Though it is better than the "old series", I think that Nancy Drew appears a little to perfect at times. She all most always does the right things and isn't very "real". The book also includes details that are not important to the plot and talks to much about fashion. It always says what she's wearing, if her clothes match ect. Though Nancy Drew still seems a bit perfect this book is much better than the old books. I like this book better because Nancy's friends are included more in the book and you are not eft wondering.I think Without A Trace was an okay book.
Bring back the old Nancy!.......2004-10-01
I have read Nancy Drew for 50 years and still enjoy them. I have all the titles published, but I am not fond of this new Nancy. I have been used to the fast paced, rough and tumble adventures. (I admit she should have a serious head problem with all the times she was hit over the head). I have read the first 5 in this new series and it seems you are almost to page 100 before you are sure there is really a true mystery, most is speculation. I agree with another reviewer the the mysteries seem silly compared to the old series. In the older books, you knew what the mystery (or at least one of them) was right of the bat. I hope they get better as I would hate to stop collecting them for my Grandaughters.

Excellent resource and guide for parenting.......2004-02-12
I have read this book several times and find something new each time I read it. Dr. West provides insightful approaches to typical misbehaviors by children. He uses an Adlerian approach that is not too overwhelming for children and also allows them the personal power to make their own decisions. This book is also educational for parents on basic developmental theory.
I give this book to my clients with childrearing problems and I have heard countless times how much easier it is for them once they follow the guidelines and suggestions. I know this is an expensive book and sometimes it is very hard to find, but I think that for the price of an average video game, kids are worth it.

This book caused me to think of people and places I hadn't thought of for the past 30 years. I served with Delta company Sept. 1970 till July 1, 1971. Keith Nolan told a story that should have been told long ago. After reading Sappers in the Wire I was upset with some of the things that were said about Delta. But I now realize that not everyone will recall events in the same light. It has a lot to do with where you are at in the chain of command. This book caused me to get in touch with quite a few of my wartime brothers. It has also help me to remember things that were in the back of my mind, THANKS Keith for telling at least part of The Professionals story of 1970- 1971. I will re-read this book over and over, because each time it helps me remember more.
