Too simplistic. Too many pictures and not enough information. Even the info given is not detailed enough. Many common household plants mot even listed ex.the snake plant. I purchased this book on the great reviews and this is the first time I'm very disappointed. Trust me and save your money.
A beautiful book for beginners........2003-12-09
Easy-Care Guide to Houseplants is a beautiful book to look at, but it is for the beginner. The "how to" section does go into detail with beautiful pictures showing you each step of the way. The decorating ideas look nice, but it would be more practical if they were silk plants. The placement of the plants is very impractical, either the plants don't get enough light or watering the plants would be a hugh chore.
The Plant Profiles is just an introduction to houseplants. This book is definitely not for the experienced houseplant person who is looking for real information on individual plants. Experienced houseplant people keep looking this book isn't for you.
Must Have Reference Book!.......2003-09-11
I have yet to met someone who wouldn't appreciate a healthy indoor plant. This book is excellent - it's concise, informative and written in a way even the most inexperienced plant owner can understand. It's worth buying just for the pictures alone! Come on, bring nature indoors!

This was a very informative book. I have never been a able to keep a plant alive before. Now people say I have a green thumb.
My home and deck are full of healthy beautiful plants. Every plant,in the book, has a great photo and full discription of light needs and exact fertilizer times and needs. I have had a hard time finding a few of the fertilizers needed, so I may start tring some of the great fertilizer recipes given. Every thing needed is here. How to propigate, transplant, divide. A full list of discriptions of possible plant problems and the solutions. I would suggest this book to anyone as a great resource. As a matter of fact, I've lent it out a few times.(But I make sure to get it bact soon)
Need A Hobby, Get This Book.......2002-09-25
Most of us have time for only one thing nowadays, simplicity. This book simplifies caring for house plants. I still cannot find 20-10-10 plant food it recommends [for my aloe plant], but that's a small thing. I'll probably find it online.

Great help for a gardener with a black thumb........2000-07-17
I have a black thumb when it comes to gardening. The minute that I stray from proven plants everything dies. Peter's book in plain english makes it simple for even the challenged to have a beautiful garden. Landscape plans are given along with plant lists with common and latin names. In the back is a reference for the plants with information on caring for them. Good book for beginners and a great book for referencing.

You can judge this book by it's cover.......2004-04-14
This may be the worst Bonsai Book ever written. The tree on the front cover is a prime example of what a Bonsai tree is not supposed to look like. The tree is a young Ficus with no taper to the trunk. The branches grow straight up and the style is all wrong. Most importantly are the horrible scars on the branches from leaving the wires on too long. The book is very generic and really doesn't give enough information to create a heathly and well trained tree. If you have shown enough interest in Bonsai to pursue more information on the Art of Bonsai then you have already outgrown this book. Avoid this book, and buy a tree instead.
Good introductory indoor bonsai book.......2001-02-07
As stated in the title this book is about indoor bonsai, or more precisely how to grow and maintain tropical bonsai indoors. It doesn't contain much info on non tropical species, which are more appropriate to growing outdoors. There are many beautiful pictures that will inspire the beginning bonsai artist to create masterpieces of their own. Highly recommended beginners book.
Kind of Dull.......2000-08-30
While the book offers information on some indoor and partially indoor species, I was looking for a book with more species information. The pictures were not all that great and the book in general appeared boring. It was more concise that what I was looking for. The book lacked many species that I was interested in, such as: Camphor, Baobab, Banyan, Coffee, Bald Cypress, and Buttonwood. I have ordered Bonsai in your Home: An Indoor Grower's Guide, and hopefully that will have the information I need.
This book is my Bonsai trees' best friend........2000-06-25
I would recommend this book to every first time bonsai owner. I'm sure that if my current trees could speak, they would thank me for reading this book prior to making my bonsai selection. My first bonsai tree did not fair so well. It appears I did everything wrong the first time around. First I selected an out door tree for an indoor garden. I did not know when to trim the tree or how to fertilize. I thought all bonsai needed the same care guidelines. I was very wrong and the tree died.
I love the section on individual tree care. Now when I find a bonsai that I love, I just pull out my copy of Indoor Bonsai for Beginners: Selection, Care, Training, and find out if the tree will thrive in the location I have available. If not, I do the tree a favor and leave it for someone who has the proper location.
Thanks to this book I know which trees will fair well in an office window with only the morning sun. I know to have a drip tray, sprayer and other supplies waiting for the trees to arrive. I know to find out when the bonsai was last transplanted and fertilized. This book is definitely my Bonsai Trees' best friend and a MUST READ for anyone thinking about owning a bonsai. Just do your tree a favor and read it before you make your tree selection.

This is an excelent book about indoor bonsai. I've been buying books looking for tips in selection,care and training of indoor bonsais but most of the authors insist that this is an outdoor activity. In Indoor Bonsai for Beginners I found helpful information and a lot of pictures and drawings

What a great book!.......2001-08-15
It looks like this book may be hard to find, but it's worth the extra effort. It is very informative without becoming overly technical, and espouses common sense precaution without crossing the line into hysterical crusading (well...except for a tiny bit of "scare tactics" at the very beginning). Authors John and Delores Alber preface their book some basic recommendations for how to avoid problems, then acknowledge we're human and set out to arm us with information.
The first sections focus on basic groundrules. They range from 'use common sense' to "be prepared for emergencies," and the authors makes specific suggestions both for precautionary measures and for emergency response. This is followed by a brief section on how plants are properly named (critical to accurately identifying a plant), a list of common plant toxins & how they damage, and plant selection tables for picking out innocuous plants. Then the focus switches to identifying hazards.
The main body of the book is an identification guide to common houseplants and florist flowers focusing on toxicity potential. Plants are organized alphabetically by genus and species, and each entry lists common names as available. Entries include a general description of the plant, an sketch illustration, any noteworthy species or varieties, and an evaluation of its dangers with specific precautionary recommendations and reference listings for further investigation. The index is satisfactorily comprehensive, containing both scientific and widely popular common names.
What I really think makes this book stand out is the amount of background the authors provide on their findings. Rather than just say, "Safe," "Unsafe," or "Prosecutable," the Albers tell you who has made the evaluation (often Poison Control), whether it has been researched formally or is simply a compilation of observations, and any reservations they may have concerning the finding. They tell you straight up that they plan on erring on the side of caution, but they give you more than enough information to let YOU make the final call on whether the plant needs to be shunned.
A very comprehensive book.......1999-12-12
This book is very comprehensive, more so than the poison control center lists that I've seen. From the book I learned things about toxicity of orchids of which orchid-growing experts were unaware. The authors also address the toxicity of things other than houseplants and cut flowers themselves, such as pesticides that might have been sprayed on the leaves of houseplants and preservatives with which cut flowers may have been treated. This book would make an excellent present for parents of young children.
very helpful book for those interested in childproofing.......1999-04-07
This book is very thorough in it's descriptions of the houseplants and their toxicity. It includes sketches of the plants for identification. It makes recommendations about whether the plant is safe for homes w/ children, should be kept out of reach of children, or should not be in homes with children. I found it a very helpful tool in childproofing my home.

Am I in Trouble Review.......2004-08-03
I was forced to read this book for a college class in Behavior Modification. The book has many different positive ideas that are beneficial to those working with children in any context. It helps to remind us of things to do that will help as well what the children are 'thinking' or trying to tell us.
I recommend this book to anyone working with children: from parents, to teachers, to social workers...everyone should read this book!
