Book Description
It is a spring morning in New Orleans, 1843. In the Spanish Quarter, on a street lined with flophouses and gambling dens, Madame Carl recognizes a face from her past. It is the face of a German girl, Sally Miller, who disappeared twenty-five years earlier. But the young woman is property, the slave of a nearby cabaret owner. She has no memory of a "white" past. Yet her resemblance to her mother is striking, and she bears two telltale birthmarks. In brilliant novelistic detail, award-winning historian John Bailey reconstructs the exotic sights, sounds, and smells of mid-nineteenth-century New Orleans, as well as the incredible twists and turns of Sally Miller's celebrated and sensational case. Did Miller, as her relatives sought to prove, arrive from Germany under perilous circumstances as an indentured servant or was she, as her master claimed, part African, and a slave for life? A tour de force of investigative history that reads like a suspense novel, The Lost German Slave Girl is a fascinating exploration of slavery and its laws, a brilliant reconstruction of mid-nineteenth-century New Orleans, and a riveting courtroom drama. It is also an unforgettable portrait of a young woman in pursuit of freedom.
Book Description
During French colonial rule in Louisiana, nuns from the French Company of Saint Ursula came to New Orleans, where they educated women and girls of European, Indian, and African descent, enslaved and free, in literacy, numeracy, and the Catholic faith. Although religious women had gained acceptance and authority in seventeenth-century France, the New World was less welcoming. Emily Clark explores the transformations required of the Ursulines as their distinctive female piety collided with slave society, Spanish colonial rule, and Protestant hostility.

Fond Memories.......2007-05-07
This book brought back so many fond memories of when I was growing up in a little town north of New Orleans. My parents were from New Orleans and of Italian descent, and this book is reminiscent of so many things I experienced as a child. My mother made a St. Joseph's Altar for 17 years until she was no longer able to do so, and I was thrilled to find recipes for so many of the dishes she prepared in this book!
A Vivid Reminder.......2004-02-20
Growing up in a Sicilian family in the 50's, the St Jospeh Altar was a labor of love for my parents. I can recall the women gathered around the kitchen table with their own special paring knives for making cookies and secret recipes for the traditional dishes of their homeland. The photographs are a vivid reminder of those tables laden with so many pastries with the strange sounding names.
Although this book is seen from the celebrations in New Orleans, it still captures the story of the St Joseph Altar with the prayers and rituals of the occassion. I can still hear the beautiful sung Litany of St Joseph translated into English in this book, and taste the crunch of "mudica" (toasted breadcrumbs)on the pasta. This book would be a treasure to hand down to your children as you tell them of their grandparents and great-grandparents or as a gift for anyons who remembers San Guiseppe's feast day. It is a scrapbook of a time past for most Sicilian familes who have blended into the cultural melting pot, and a reminder of a heritage that should be kept alive for future generations.
St. Joseph Altars.......2004-01-04
A beautiful book with super pictures. If you cannot come to New Orleans to see the St. Joseph Altars in person, then at least buy the book and enjoy the pictures. The Feast of St. Joseph is on March 19th.

The best of real ghost stories.......2005-08-08
This old book has an unreal assemblage of ghost stories culled from old newspaper accounts which lends a reality edge to an already creepy topic. I have owned a copy of this book for the last 12 years, first edition, and had no idea it was so valuable. I have read tons of ghost story book, but this one is a staple every Halloween season, and every new listener is as creeped out as the first. If you can get your hands on a copy, you'll never give it up!
GREAT COLLECTION OF GHOST STORIES.......2005-06-30
this is one of the best collections of ghost stories i've ever read, probably the best actually. it's unfortunate this book is out of print, or i'd have ordered myself a copy. anyway, my friend and i checked it out of our university's library and read the stories to each other with the lights out and only a flashlight. the best story, by far, is "the devil's mansion," with a perfect amount of the supernatural, of evil, and plenty of gorific descriptions. the book captures the creepiness of new orleans and its history.

Book Description
One of the greatest and most celebrated Southern writers of his day, George Washington Cable (1844-1925) helped to lead the local colorist movement of the late 1800s with his pioneering use of dialect and his skill with the short story form. A Southern reformist, Cable wrote faithful portrayals of Creoles and their culture that depict the Creole way of life during the transitory post-Civil War period.
Originally published in 1879, "Old Creole Days" catapulted Cable to national recognition. The stories within reflect the everyday life of the New Orleans Creoles through a mixture of humor and the unique Creole patois. Cable's best-known work, "Old Creole Days" includes such famous stories as "Posson Jone'," "Jean-ah Poquelin," and "Madame Délicieuse," tales that are alive with the sounds and scenes of nineteenth-century New Orleans.
Customer Reviews:
Uniquely Captures an Era.......2006-05-26
The stories in this book provide colorful insight of the culture of New Orleans in the 19th century. Cable has a gift for painting lively images in the minds of his readers. This period in Louisiana history is gone, but thanks to this talented communicator we have a taste of what it was like. Strolling through the narrow streets of the French Quarter, one can think back to days gone by. Cable helps us understand a little of what it was like.
History is about people. As a historical journalist, Cable keeps the human element in the forefront of his work. He doesn't forget that people want to know about other people. Fortunately for us, he tells the stories of Louisianians in his generation.
dialect as thick as gumbo.......2003-11-06
This book is worth reading as an example of the local color school of literature of the late 19th century. It consists of a novelette, Madame Delphine, and some short stories and sketches. The problem is that the dialogue is written in dialect as thick as gumbo. Outsiders can hardly understand it unless they speak it aloud.
Good.......2001-07-12
You get the feel of life in New Orleans at that time.

Customer Reviews:
Do yourself a favor and buy this book.......2005-10-03
This book is geared towards mostly small businesses and even micro businesses like mine. I recommend this book to ANYONE with no background in sales or marketing. Anyone can use the number of great ideas in it.
Bullet Points!.......2005-05-09
This book reads much like bullet points - no wasted language - just straight to the points without fluff. Great book for those relatively new to marketing.
Lots of great real ideas / examples!.......2003-09-06
This book is different than any other marketing book. The author's other book explains marketing really well. This book gives more than 1001 examples of how people have really done successful marketing. The book has twenty-five or thirty chapters on every marketing topic you can think of, from the Internet, to postcards, to customer service, to sales, to publicity. In other words, you go to the type of marketing you are interested in and read the examples of what other people have done. Within the first few pages of that topic your head will be filled with many brilliant ideas. Some you can borrow directly. Some you can combine. Some you can adapt.
A Quick Start Tips For the Beginner.......2003-01-16
"1001 Ways to Market Your Services" is broken down into a number of small chapters dealing with various marketing methods and offers some great ideas on how to get the message out. The author calls upon his own experiences as well as from the exploits of others to demonstrate strategies that really do work. While Mr. Crandall expresses a great amount of enthusiasm for marketing he does draw the line on some practices that may rub the wrong way and cast suspicion upon the integrity of the marketing business. He walks a fine line and his sound advice should be followed to the letter.
This book has good information and is very good for people with limited marketing experience and ideas. It does not give much detail on setting up a marketing campaign. This title translated into Russian is very successful in Moscow.
#1002 ý Market YOU!.......2001-05-28
This book has some great tips, but when it comes to marketing your services, nothing replaces a *personal* publicity plan. To position your small business, you have to position YOURSELF. Bottom line is that people have to know who you are, what you stand for, and why they should do business with you.
Book Description
To many people, marketing means personal selling or advertising, imposing oneself on others, and trying to get people to buy something they may not want. Rick Crandall debunks these myths in Marketing Your Services, a grassroots guide to marketing and building relationships with customers to achieve success. Directed primarily to entrepreneurs, small business owners and solo service providers, the book offers more than 1000 practical tips that can help make a marketer out of anyone who wants to serve customers better. Crandall intentioned this book as a marketing crash course specifically for service providers – from lawyers to freelance writers, from carpenters to landscapers. All of the basics of marketing are explained in easy-to-understand terms. Helpful hints, tips and suggestions are illustrated through examples with which non-professional marketers can easily identify. The overall tone is conversational and reassuring. The expanded & updated edition reflects a thorough revisior including a change in organization, so the book begins with chapters on marketing basics -- like advertising, sales, and publicity -- then moves into more focused chapters addressing professional and relationship building methods. A new chapter on online marketing is included and examples of effective online marketing techniques and strategies are woven in throughout. Self-motivation is given more extensive coverage, international examples have been added as have more specific examples from service business start-ups. The lengthy appendices have been updated to include new templates and examples.

Don't Bother.......2007-09-19
This book is being returned. I wanted something written by someone who doesn't like to sell but learned to do it in spite of him/herself. This book was obviously written by someone who loves to sell, and will do anything to promote. If you don't believe me, look at the people who have reviewed this washed out excuse of a book. Most books here at Amazon are reviewed by people with either names or nicknames, but all the Five Star reviewers of this book go by the name "Reader." The exception is Joe Vitale, who will do and say anything for a buck. I wish I'd read all the reviews before buying -- I would have avoided this book.
Yes, I sound crabby. I'm angry that I was suckered by another badly-written misrepresented book.
Avoid it. There are better titles with superior information reviewed by people other than the author's friends.
Relationship building & consultative marketing approach.......2003-11-10
I launched a successful graphic design business using dozens of the marketing approaches that fill Rick Crandall's book. Six years later I re-located, re-read the book, and started all over. Hundreds of tried and true strategies for getting your offering "out there" are well-organized in the various chapters of the book. There are lots of good real-life examples and something for everyone. Rick points out that when buying services, people don't reallly know what they're getting until the service has been provided. Potential customers must decide to hire you based on trust. Therefore, relationship building is critical to marketing intangible services, and the consultative marketing approach Rick advocates shows the customer you have their best interests at heart. I still refer to the book often and share relevant strategies with clients developing their own businesses.
Not so cool.......2003-03-01
I read this book after being promoted to Product Manager. I was hoping to get more insight and do my job better, but it was too poor in some aspects.
The book is good, but not so good, unless you haven't heard of marketing before.
Anyone with a little imagination could come up with the ideas showed in the book.
I guess it is aimed at people with personnal business and offering only services like lawyers. It is very usefull for independent consultants. I am a consultant, but work for a company, so it didn't help too much. If you work for a company, then don't waste your time and money.
GREAT book!.......2002-11-13
I was surprised by this one. I expected fluff but instead got practical ideas and tested methods and lots of colorful stories to bring it all to life. I highly reccomend this one....
Must-read for anyone trying to promote a service business!.......1998-10-03
I've just started a consulting business and I have no marketing experience. I've also realized this business is more than consulting, I need to learn how to sell myself!
Most marketing books focus on "product" marketing - a lot of their methods do not apply to service marketing. This book is fun to read and applies marketing methods specifically to service businesses and provides real-world actions you can take today to promote your business with little or no money! I've already implemented some of the methods. I love this book!
