EXCELLENT INFO ON TIPI'S AND THEIR MANAGEMENT.
excellent resource!.......2002-11-17
using this book helped me immensely when it came time to raise my own tipi! using only the book and my woefully average construction skills, i easily put up my 22 foot diameter tipi in the northern california woods in a few hours with minimal assistance, the first try!
the other parts of the book offer fascinating aspects related to tipi living, history and culture. a must read for any tipi enthusiast!
great!
heartLove, the electric tipi hippy!
Allows us to feel like true aficionadoes.......2001-11-13
The wealth of information included by the Laubins, and their heartfelt respect for the American Indian, permeate this book. Many tipi construction books these days are written by would-be hippies--but the Laubins come across as the real thing. They had real contact with the tribes who made the various designs and they understood the distinctions between them. Better yet they have done an excellent job at getting these techniques across to the reader. An excellent resource for our business and home pursuits alike and the only book on the subject we recommend.

Informative but missing some of the spirit.......2007-08-14
Linda Holley has written a very informative book on a range of aspects of Tipi history, construction and use which is well thought out and balanced in terms of content.
I am, however, left a little disappointed by the spirit of the thing. Tipis are a way of life and I feel as though it would have been nice to have related Tipis to a wider issue of sustainable living - instead, the use of toxic chemicals and treatments for fabrics is advocated all too often without considering alternatives. Also, the advocation of the use of "Brownings" and "Smith & Wessons" is a little alarming.
Aside from those issues. A pretty good book.
One-of-a-kind guide .......2007-08-06
Former teacher, Native American culture expert and dedicated tipi-maker Linda A. Holley presents Tipis, Tepees, Teepees: History and Design of the Cloth Tipi, an extraordinary history of a cloth dwelling design that has been used in dozens of cultures since the dawn of civilization. Today, tipis can be found in North America, Asia, and Australia, among other places - tipis are naturally durable, weather resistant, and easy to transport, and new synthetic materials help make them adaptable to a wider variety of climates than ever. Tips, Tepees, Teepees covers far more than the history of the tipi; chapters also cover their many styles, how to take proper care of a tipi, how to pitch a tipi, day-to-day life in a tipi, advice on buying a tipi, etc. Numerous black-and-white photographs, a glossary, bibliography, and index round out this one-of-a-kind guide strongly recommended for anyone and everyone curious about tipis.
Book Description
Among nomadic peoples, round-shaped homes, echoing natural forms, have sheltered families since the dawn of recorded time. The natural world is filled with circles, but it's surprising how unusual circular houses are in industrialized society. In our disconnected world, the circle has given way to the box.
As David Pearson explains in his introduction, "Like our nomadic ancestors, many of us have a deep yearning to roam with the seasons and be close to nature and the cosmos. The traditional forms of the yurt, tipi, and bender are the apogee of this experience. . . . Nomadic populations live in some of the most inhospitable and barren regions of the world and this is why they are nomads. Whether it be the deserts of the Sahara and Gobi, the steppes of Mongolia, or the polar tundras, these vast areas are either too hot and arid or too cold and windswept to be cultivated. An African grass-covered hut, a Romany gypsy 'bender,' an Asian yurt, or a Native American tipi are all perfect lessons in appropriate design and sustainable building. Refined over generations, they are simple yet sophisticated, beautiful and comfortable."
Remarkable for their economy, resilience, and portability, these structures have continued to exert a powerful appeal in modern times. And beyond practicality, what the circle dwellers in this book speak of most eloquently is the incomparable spiritual resonance of round homes, which "represent the universe in microcosm: the floor (Earth), the roof (sky), and the hole in the roof (the sun)."
Circle Houses is a fascinating glimpse of tradition meeting timelessness, filled with stories of 21st-century nomads and complete with basic instructions for designing and constructing your own yurt, tipi, or bent-frame tent.

Circle Houses.......2003-11-18
I thought the book gave an excellent description of yurts and tipis from a historical perspective and present day use. Its gives case studies/examples of people who current live in these types of unique dwellings. We added a couple of yurts to our North Georgia bed and breakfast inn. We have witnessed some of the feelings first hand that our guests have had that were also mentioned in the book by yurt dwellers.
Book Description
Award-winning author Paul Goble examines the construction, art, and significance of the tipi to the Plains Indians in his newest book, entitled Tipi: Home of the Nomadic Buffalo Hunters. Through a re-telling of the old-timer's stories, Goble shows how the tipi was more than just a home, but an expression of spiritual beliefs.

Excellent and Comprehensive, a must own!.......2007-09-03
Filled with insights and great respect for this horse culture. I passed a copy on to a friend of Mongolian descent who took it to Mongolia where it was received with great interest and reverence. The artwork and symbolism should be tremendously helpful to future generations of young tribal members and descendants as the memories fade ever further.
A vivid, outstanding survey of the spiritual and culture meaning of the Native American structure........2007-06-09
Paul Goble's TIPI: HOME OF THE NOMADIC BUFFALO HUNTERS blends traditional insights into tipi construction and development with a retelling of old-timers stories and a blending in of art to make for a fine survey of construction techniques, decorations, cultural meaning, and more. TIPI includes over a hundred color illustrations and drawings and makes for a vivid, outstanding survey of the spiritual and culture meaning of the Native American structure.

The author has written over one hundred and fifty books for children. Teepee is a simple book for young readers that not only shows the parts of an American Indian's home, it explores the benefits of its features that can accomodate the seasonal changes and need for portability in a hunting culture.
There is a short list of "challenge words" defined and illustrated with photographs.
Young readers adore this fun book!

Book Description
from the Introduction
This study will, first, document the historic contributions of women to American architecture; second, analyze the underlying social and economic reasons for the present situation by attracting more women to the profession of architecture. This book is part of the general discussion concerning women in this country; it is part of a trend and, hopefully, this trend will lead not only to further discussion but to constructive activity. One cannot deny the facts, but perhaps many people will disagree with the point of view expressed in this book. The ideas presented here are based upon research, interviews, and discussion with my male and female colleagues and, not surprisingly, there was a diversity of opinions, ideas, and goals, even among the women. The point is not that women are more likely than their male counterparts to have found the answers to the difficult issues confronting the profession of architecture, but that perhaps they are raising new and different questions which are pertinent to its future.

Beautiful scenery doesn't make up for sloppy tents........2003-02-10
You may be fooled by the beautiful backgrounds, but if you want to build a yurt that can be lived in this is NOT the book for you. Details are sketchy, yurts and tents are not set up well, and patterns shown are non historical. Visually beautiful, but non informative.
Good modern designs........2002-02-19
I had built a yurt and also a tipi before I ever saw this book. I wished that I had read this book before I ever built! Especially the yurt design.... it is a very simple and strong design. If I were to build another one, these are the plans I would follow! The woman who wrote this book deserves alot of credit.
I found this to be a very helpful book.......2001-09-04
I found this book to be very helpful, and full of practical information about building Tipis and Yurts. The designs are not exact replicas of the traditional structures, but have been modified using canvas instead of skins, and 1x2's for the yurt walls. This makes them applicable for a wide variety of modern uses, and easy to construct for the average person. The designs are well thought out, and the instructions are simple to follow. I guess if you want an EXACT replica of a Sioux Tipi, or a Mongolian Yurt, then you might not be pleased with this book. If you are like me however, and don't want to fool around with skinning animals or foraging for 150 identically-sized sapplings for your Yurt walls..... and simply want to build a cool structure using materials that you can buy locally, then this book is great!
"INAUTHENTIC" designs would be a better book title!.......2001-01-01
I can only speak to the section of the book about tipis. Having used the Laubin tipi book for 25 years, I have to say that the book in question is filled with incomplete and wrongheaded information. The pictures show a tipi that is poorly constructed, not fully pitched, incorrectly sited, and without a liner or furnishings--a flapping, wrinkled, miserable-looking shell. The methods the author has devised for staking the tipi are laughable: completely different from the traditional methods, needlessly complicated and ineffective. I guessed that these methods would result in a tipi that can not withstand a strong wind, and in fact, the author admits that her tipi has started to collapse in a strong windstorm!! In contrast, the Laubins' tipis have withstood hurricane force winds, because they used traditional methods, which are simple and work beautifully. Otherwise, the plains Indians would have died out long ago. Although she lists the excellent Laubin book in her bibiography, I doubt very much the author has read it herself. This author seems to have pulled many methods out of thin air. She has eliminated a small but important element in tipi design (smoke flap gores), seems ignorant about how to handle the smoke flaps to keep out rain, and does not know how to make a tipi livable. DO NOT TRUST THIS BOOK!
Yuck--nothing personal but...........2000-08-21
I understand what it is to be a new tentmaker, but this book puts very haphazard designs out as if the author is an expert. I agree--read Laubin for tipis (the best I've seen yet)--for yurts try Torvald Faegre's 'TENTS--ARCHITECTURE OF THE NOMADS' or anything by Peter Alford Andrews. Don't buy this book--if it could bark, it would.

Book Description
