Every day ordinary young Americans are fighting in Iraq with the same bravery, honor, and sense of duty that have distinguished American troops throughout history. One of these is Jason Dunham, a twenty-two-year-old Marine corporal from the one-stoplight town of Scio, New York, whose stunning story reporter Michael M. Phillips discovered while he was embedded with a Marine infantry battalion in the Iraqi desert. Corporal Dunham was on patrol near the Syrian border, on April 14, 2004, when a black-clad Iraqi leaped out of a car and grabbed him around his neck. Fighting hand-to-hand in the dirt, Dunham saw his attacker drop a grenade and made the instantaneous decision to place his own helmet over the explosive in the hope of containing the blast and protecting his men. When the smoke cleared, Dunham’s helmet was in shreds, and the corporal lay face down in his own blood. The Marines beside him were seriously wounded. Dunham was subsequently nominated for the Congressional Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest award for military valor.
Phillips’s minute-by-minute chronicle of the chaotic fighting that raged throughout the area and culminated in Dunham’s injury provides a grunt’s-eye view of war as it’s being fought today—fear, confusion, bravery, and suffering set against a brotherhood forged in combat. His account of Dunham’s eight-day journey home and of his parents’ heartrending reunion with their son powerfully illustrates the cold brutality of war and the fragile humanity of those who fight it. Dunham leaves an indelible mark upon all who know his story, from the doctors and nurses who treat him, to the readers of the original Wall Street Journal article that told of his singular act of valor.

Honors One U.S. Marine Who Represents All U.S. Marines.......2007-10-12
A quick read that will help the family of this fallen Marine heal their pain. Would be a good basis for a course or discussion or analyis of how wishful thinking and hope by well meaning people falls short when they lose sight of the realities of the situation and circumstances. None of which takes anything away from the valient heart of Medal of Honor recipient Corporal Jason Dunham, USMC.

This is also a non-fiction book about the trials of becoming a Marine, then a leader of men, and then a victim of the tribulations of that position. I have been reading the Wall Street Journal for over 50 years, and have been ever salutory of the reporters that have produced stories for that instituion----and this is NO exception! This reporter dug up the very varied backgrounds of these Marines, and brought them into focus of a VERY controversial time in the U.S.----and the M.D.'s and nurses that played their roles in the very lives of these fighting men and women----that are on the the frontline--------so that we do not have to be.

This was an incredible book about an incredible young man and his sacfrice for our freedom. As a USMC veteran of the first GUlf War I was interested in reading what these guys are dealing with in Iraq. As a father I was so caught up in what his family went through and how they dealt with the decisions they had to make. This book will be on the top of my list of favorite books.
The best book I've read so far this year........2007-01-12
I know it's only January but this book is fantastic - an extremely well-written account of a fascinating story of a true American hero. Strongly recommended.

Michael Philips is a gifted writer who crafts and amazing story of a wonderful young man who gave his life to save his fellow Marines. Buy it, read it, and pass it on to someone else to read. Five stars are not enough for this book.

I received this as a graduation gift in 1992. I treasure it and have given copies twice as a gifts. I use it to quickly find scriptures to share with others, share words of inspiration at meetings, and to find encouragement...I rarely travel without it. You don't even have to be a Christian to enjoy the messages cantained within....I love it, love it, LOVE IT!

A Book That Will "Speak" To You.......2003-03-30
I first bought this book from a discount bin and planned on lending it or giving it to a friend. Then I thought of another friend who might like it. Then I realized there was no way I was parting with MY copy. So I just bought two more copies of this book to give to friends.
I have had a great relationship with God all of my life. But the Bible has never been easy for me to read or understand. Some verses I have to read over and over before I can figure out what the lesson is. This book, while not a "replacement" for reading the Bible, is a great compliment/companion to it. On each page, the book gives a funny "headline", accompanied by a related Bible verse and a "current real life" story explaining the meaning of the verse and making the verse and the lesson, more three dimensional. The book doesn't preach. It teaches lessons in an entertaining way. All while really making you think and bringing you closer to God.
Whether you are someone who feels that you need a 'gentle nudge' back in the direction of God or if you are someone who already has a close personal relationship with Him, there's something for everyone in this book.

Since our lives are filled with so many challenges, we sometimes just need a break in our day to nurture our souls. This book is filled with humorous stories and thoughtful messages to inspire and encourage you as you strive to become who God intends you to be.
I especially enjoyed reading the quote at the beginning of each devotional. Each message is linked to a pithy quotation and also verses from the Bible. They are very easy-to-read and the stories will make you think. You will find the stories will help you in your daily journey in life.
The issues of marriage, being content, wisdom, important decisions, character, success and various real-life issues are spoken of in such a friendly tone. You will just want to keep reading, but this is meant more for daily devotionals. You might be tempted to read more than one each day. Don't worry, I won't tell on you ;).

If you enjoyed reading this book, I can also recommend the BreakThrough Series by Dr. Bruce H. Wilkinson. The Prayer of Jabez and Secrets of The Vine are wonderful devotionals which will bring you into a deeper understanding of prayer and your purpose here on this earth as a Christian.

What an exquisite book! The meditations are profound in their simplicity, and the illustrations are beautiful. This would be a lovely gift cherished for years to come.

NOT what I expected.......2007-06-12
I was looking for some suitable books for my daughter's graduation. This book looked good from the publisher writeup. But, I was very disappinted. EVERY speech centers on God and Jesus guiding the writer's life. Don't get me wrong - I believe in God and am a good Christian. But, I was not looking for a religious guidebook. I was expecting some mentions of God or Divine help, but not as the centerpice of the book. I have found other Graduation Speech books more in-line with my desire.

This is the best of all books on graduation speeches. The speeches by Ann McGee-Cooper, Diana Chapman, General Henry Shelton, Robert Ballard, Sidney Rittenberg, Alan Keyes, J. C. Watts, Ronald Reagan, and Billy Graham are very good.

Great book!!!!.......2007-09-06
I love this book! I actually read it every night before I go to bed to help calm the day down and settle down for sleep. I also use this book in accordance with prayer to talk with God. I pray then I normally write the date and a small note on what is going on if something major is going on in the back of the book. Then I randomly open the pages neatly print the date and read the devotion. I have been doing my devotions this way for about the past 9 months or so and everytime I open the page I am faced with something that is completely fitting to my situation. I love it. I feel that God talks to me threw this book and I enjoy my nightly time with him and "our" book.
I also enjoy going back threw the little notes and then searching for the pages that have that date or vice versa. It has lots of wonderful sayings and verses and stories that can be enjoyed over & over again.
One of my most cherished books!.......2006-12-21
I love the simple, yet lovely and heart-warming manner in which this story is told. Every page speaks volumes to me, and is a reminder to look more closely at those around us and realize what a special treasure they are. Also, the illustrations by C. Michael Dudash are exquisitely beautiful, full of rich detail and emotion. I love to sit and slowly soak up the rich delights of each page.
I did notice when looking at the book review of the volume that includes two other Christmas tales, that the wording was a bit different. That one contained a few more sentences here and there, but the extra wording seemed to detract from the flow of the story. I much prefer the wording in this single volume.
I highly recommend this book! I keep this treasured book out all year long!

This little book has been a great inspiration. It has often given me an answer to a situation that I face during the day after reading the daily passage.
I love mine so much that I have purchase this book as a gift and my friends have love it as well.

I first purchased God's Little Instruction Book 7 or 8 years ago and it has been a blessing, not only to me, but to many who have entered my home and picked it up from curiosity. It is humorous, inspirational and very thought provoking. I am glad to find it still available because it is a GREAT gift for anyone, Christian or non-Christian. My mother who had lost her memory, but not her mind, use to read it to me, over and over, she didn't remember she had just read it so it was new to her each time she read it. I bless God for the person or persons responsible for compiling it. I will be ordering some of the others that are available and expect them to be as good as or better then the first one.

Solid history, but highly readable........2004-02-23
I ordered this book because I was researching the fortunes of the Irish Brigade in Spain. I was expecting to get the factual information presented in the usual dry historical format.
I was so pleasantly surprised with the relaxed narrative, that I read further into the book, and became captivated by the stories of other groups who fought for Franco.
In the first twenty or so pages Keene gives an introduction and historical context to the war that serves as a neat summary for anyone wanting to know a little about the subject.
Then she goes into the detail of various volunteer groups who fought on the Nationalist side during the war. Because she is looking at volunteer outfits, Keene does not include the major foreign contributors to Franco's Campaign. For instance, she is not writing about the German, Italian and Moroccan contingents.
The key groups of volunteers are dealt with in separate chapters. One for the English speaking volunteers which includes information on Americans, British and the Irish Brigade. Then she examines the French contribution. Another chapter examines the contribution of the White Russians, and finally the Romanian Iron Guard.
She also includes a chapter on foreign female reporters, publicists and medical personnel who supported the Nationalist cause.
Franco was careful to downplay the role of foreigners in the Civil War, and Keene highlights his caution in this regard. He made much of the volunteer forces because they were generally small and symbolic of the wider Catholic support for his cause. He was most careful not to publicise the huge levels of support he received from Axis countries and the Moroccans, as he was trying to portray the struggle as a new Spanish Crusade, rather than as a battle between fascism and communism.
In all, this is an intelligently researched and well written look at a very interesting subject.
A readable look at a fascinating topic........2002-01-17
The author is a highly respected historian writing about a field that is getting increasingly more interest. Using a winning combination of excellently-researched historical summary and anecdotes about individuals, Dr. Keene narrates an engrossing chapter in the development of fascism in the twentieth century.
