The Renaissance of the Twelfth Century
ASIN: 0801485398 |
Book Description
This lavishly illustrated book looks at the art and architecture of episcopal palaces as expressions of power and ideology. Tracing the history of the bishop's residence in the urban centers of northern Italy over the Middle Ages, Maureen C. Miller asks why this once rudimentary and highly fortified structure called a domus became a complex and elegant "palace" (palatium) by the late twelfth century.
Miller argues that the change reflects both the emergence of a distinct clerical culture and the attempts of bishops to maintain authority in public life. She relates both to the Gregorian reform movement, which set new standards for clerical deportment and at the same time undercut episcopal claims to secular power. As bishops lost temporal authority in their cities to emerging communal governments, they compensated architecturally and competed with the communes for visual and spatial dominance in the urban center. This rivalry left indelible marks on the layout and character of Italian cities.
Moreover, Miller contends, this struggle for power had highly significant, but mixed, results for western Christianity. On the one hand, as bishops lost direct governing authority in their cities, they devised ways to retain status, influence, and power through cultural practices. This response to loss was highly creative. On the other hand, their loss of secular control led bishops to emphasize their spiritual powers and to use them to obtain temporal ends. The coercive use of spiritual authority contributed to the emergence of a "persecuting society" in the central Middle Ages.

The Sears' Family are geniuses.......2007-09-04
Absolutely LOVED this book! What a great way to raise your child and feel like a great parent too! Every new parent needs to read this incredible book the Sears. I've continued to add every new book they come out with to our library!
Don't misinterpret the meaning of attachment parenting..........2007-06-18
I have noticed by reading a few of the negative reviews for this book people are misinterpreting "ap" as letting your child "rule the roost" and have no boundaries. That is absolutely untrue! The premise of attachment parenting is to follow those instincts that are innate to every parent! I did not, by any means, rub my choices in anyone's face, but because I did practice AP I received a lot of flack from strangers, family members, coworkers etc. It's like the concept intimidated them! My children have strict rules and guidelines and are extremely respectful. They also share better than most children their age and I am a firm believer it is because of the way they are raised. Through attachment parenting we have provided a POSITIVE, well structured environment where both children and parents live in harmony. We don't have to get stressed out as parents screaming and yelling, or setting rigid guidelines because of the mutual respect we share for one another. This book is worth the reading. If not for anything simply "step outside" of our box here in North America and look at how other cultures raise their children...to most of them attachment parenting is a familiar concept.
Loved the book!.......2007-06-07
The Baby Bs of Attachment Parenting guided me when I needed reassurances and information about choices my husband and I already made. While this book explains the importance Baby Bs, such as breastfeeding, babywearing and co-sleeping (if you doubt its safety read this book), it also recognizes that not all Bs fit every family. You have to customize the advice to fit your family's needs. (There is actually a page with tips for AP friendly bottlefeeding.)
The Attachment Parenting Book also addresses discipline somewhat, which should NOT be mistaken as the let-your-child-have-everything approach. And the book warns against moms burning out, telling moms to take care of themselves, take breaks, involve the dads, etc.
This book is great to begin reading before the baby is born or when the baby is tiny, but can be enjoyed at any point up to and into toddlerhood, if you need guidance. I read this book when my child was one year old because I had co-sleeping concerns. This is the only Sears book I read, and now I wish I had read more! I love the Sears' values.
Attached and Loving It!.......2006-11-15
This book gave my husband and I the confidence to follow our hearts rather than the well-meaning albeit but misguided advice of friends and family. Prior to the birth of our son I whole heartedly agree with "crying it out" and other methods touted by baby trainers. However after his birth, we quickly realized that we could not use such heartless methods and began looking at attachment parenting. Dr. Sears encourages parents to trust their instincts which often have a biological basis. This book changed my perspective about babies and parenting. I am so glad that I read this book early on. If you are a new parent or parent-to-be I encourage to read this book and visit Dr. Sear's website (askdrsears.com).
Okay, but duplicate material from Sears' The Baby Book.......2006-11-10
A good concise book, but you can find most of the same material in the Attachment Parenting chapter in Sears' The Baby Book, a much more comprehensive book of the same price.
Book Description
One in four babies born in the United States and Europe comes into the world via Cesarean section. Yet this procedure has been described by critics as an unnecessary and potentially dangerous medical intervention. Consequently, expectant mothers often fear this option, and women who have had C-sections can feel a sense of failure.
In Cesarean Section: Understanding and Celebrating Your Baby's Birth, Drs. Michele Moore and Caroline de Costa emphasize the joy of delivering a healthy baby, however that is best achieved. They explain why Cesarean births are sometimes preferable to vaginal delivery for both mother and baby, and they help women understand the issues behind the decision to perform the procedure. From anesthesia, surgery, and recovery through at-home care of mother and child, the authors offer reassurance and practical information for all mothers and mothers-to-be. They also discuss the latest findings on postpartum depression and planning for future births, including the possibility of vaginal birth after a Cesarean section.
For every woman who has a planned -- or unplanned -- Cesarean section, this book provides the information they need to alleviate their fears and come to value this delivery option.
"Because up to a quarter of all births are Cesarean births, prenatal preparation should include information about Cesarean sections for every woman. And that is why we have written this guide.... We believe strongly that it is time to speak out and say that Cesarean section is a normal birth method and that women who have a Cesarean section should not be made to feel that they have failed.... We hope you find the information in this book useful and helpful in thinking about C-section, whether you have already had a Cesarean and want to understand the experience better, you wish to plan for another C-section birth, or you are expecting a baby and want to be informed about all the possibilities ahead, including this other normal way of bringing a baby into the world." -- from the Introduction

I am a "caesar" baby.......2007-06-21
I just sent a copy of this book to my best friend who will have her first baby soon. My mother had a cesarean section to birth me because after she'd been in labor for about 24 hours, my heartbeat seemed to disappear. Like some of the examples in this book, mine was an emergency c-section and my mother had no moral choice. When I was born, it was found that the cord was around my neck and I was strangling. I can thank the availability of a cesarean for my life and for not being developmentally challenged. I make sure all my friends have the opportunity to be prepared if things go awry during their pregnancy or labor.
The blind leading the blind.......2007-06-13
Jan, the example mother, did fail at childbirth. She should be sad about this for awhile, but then let it go because it wasn't entirely her fault: the medical establishment, which she mistakenly trusted, failed her. They are the ones who should feel bad for causing this family unnecessary trauma. The first mistake was the pitocin. It causes increased pain and does not always cause labour to progress. If Jan had the information to know to refuse the pitocin, she would have had the natural birth she wanted. The second mistake was using a fetal monitor - one of the main reasons for unnecessary c-sections. Jan should have been sent home when her labor failed to progress; she should not have been given drugs. This classic example of an unnecessary c-section was a failing of the medical establishment but the book portrays it falsely as no-one's fault -- which pretty much sums up the entire tone of the book. It's progaganda for a system that wants women to be ignorant and meek, accepting unquestioningly the unhealthy birth protocols perpetuated in hospitals by clueless physicians and nurses who think - mistakenly - that they are doing the right thing. Jan's story is a lesson in how misguided both hospital staff and mothers are today. One can only hope the authors of this book will someday see the error of their ways and publish a retraction of this misinformation. Unfortunately, it probably won't be before many more women have unnecessary c-sections.
Authors' reply.......2007-05-17
We are happy to agree with Rfolger. Cesareans should be for medical indications and that is exactly what we say in the book. Our figures are also close to his/hers. However there are also some women who having considered the options request the operation without major medical indications - that is a matter for them and their doctors, like everything else in a woman's decisions about her reproductive functions. Our aim is to provide sensible accurate information to women who have already had a Csection or face the prospect of having one. Not every woman can safely have a vaginal birth and no woman should end up feeling bad about her birth method because she had a Csection.Caroline de Costa
A Bad Myth being Perpetuated..........2007-05-07
Although a c-section maybe necessary for emergencies, most aren't. Only 10-20% of births should be via c-section, and only when medically necessary. C-sections are not a normal birth method, only a vaginal birth is. If you want to read a more informative look at c-sections and the dangers, read "Born in the USA" by Marsden Wagner, also an MD.
good information for new mothers.......2006-08-13
Waiting for my second child after 8 years, now an older Mom. First I found these authors book on older parenting Mid Life New Life - full of good tips. Having a Csection last time means I'll have another again this time after so long. This book helps put it in persepective - the whole aim is a healthy baby. Silvia S.

Highly Recommended!.......2005-11-05
At 160 pages this is a wonderful book. The first fifteen pages explain how to read your baby's signals and such. Almost every page of the rest of the book has photos - big ones! Each page is labled at the top as to what is being expressed by the infant and there is a description for each photograph. It is separated into sections by age. It is amazing the wide range of things a baby can express. Occassionally there is a series of photos showing the progression of mood on a baby's face. For instance, the initial caution of a baby shown a new stuffed animal, to being interested in it, to smiling in delight.
Also, insights are offered. For instance, "A smile can indicate not only happiness, but also a release of tension, the end of doubt."
I found it most useful to learn that a yawn doesn't necessarily mean sleepiness. It could mean that they have had too much stimulation and want a less intense activity.
This book has helped us "read" our baby better. It has been a delight. Highly recommended.

A Good Start.......2007-02-02
This is the first book that I have read concerning babies.
As a father to be, I found the book light reading. Having only 79 pages help! A concise outline on various growing stages of the baby and what to expect are provided. The best part is the author provided an insight into the psychological feeling of both the babies and the parents with clear examples.
Although the book is brief, it provides a good starting point!

This is an excellent and easy to use book about babies and parenthood. Dr Chilton's wisdom is accessible and his approach to children and child-rearing is both refreshing and reassuring.
I found this book to be a trusty source of information and a valuable guide to everything to do with babies.
Finally a book that speaks to real people with real babies!!!
