Recommended Books for the Little Ones.......2006-06-14
You can pretty much tell what this book is about from its title. It is a book, broken down into three major parts that gives lists of recommended books for children. The three parts are: School Subjects, Character and Values, Genres and Themes. Each of thes parts is further broken down into the specific lists themselves. For instance under Genres and Themes, there are Genres and Themes. Under themes there are Angels, Cowboys, Holidays. Some of these, such as Holidays are further broken down into Chinese New Year, Easter, Christmas, etc. All in all there are 100 lists.
While not copyright free, permission is given to libraries to copy the lists, put them into a newsletter or other such uses. The lists themself are organized on pages by themselves so that a library logo, clipart, etc. can be put on top of the pages before they are reproduced. There are also a dozen bookmarks that can be reprinted for library use.
Therre is a wealth of information here that can be of great help in the right situation.

Excellent Book about Effective Parenting.......2001-11-03
What I liked about this book is that there is several pages of resources where you can contact authors, consultants, trainers, parent educators and publishers for additional infomation abou their programs, services, or resources. It includes addresses, phone & fax infomation(if they have a fax number). I found the resources & bibliography section helpful because it was clear-cut and it gave references that weren't used as resources in this book but provides good infomation which is related to the topics in the book. Since the author had listed this book in a list format under each heading, there isn't many examples. Overall, I found this to be an excellent book to read.
mostly common sense.......2001-01-29
I expected more from this book. It gives do's and don'ts, but most of which we already know. It spends too much time telling the reader how to tell their child that they love them. I quess for a few parents out there this is a difficult task but that's the least of my problems. Overall it seems to give guidelines but no helpful examples. It's like reading a text book for parenting, not a book of real life experiences.
Lists for all types of parenting situations.......2000-10-18
If your looking for an easy to read book that covers a wide realm of family issues, this is it. It provides easy to follow lists that focus on positive feedback that will minimize conflict and maximize cooperation in the family.
Here are a few examples of the lists: - 13 ways to model respect - 22 worst things an adult ever said to a child - 8 ways kids rebel - 19 ways to build thinking skills - 15 ways to minimize conflicts on car trips and one of my favorites -- 14 ways to help your child deal with Monsters in the closet.
The book is a very easy read, and you can pick up tips to improve your relationship with the kids...
This Book gives some ideas, that may help you out........1999-09-15
Just glancing through a few pages of this book gave me a few ideas that could make my life a little easier i think it is well worth the small price.

A Playful Look at Mother and Child.......2006-05-15
Oliver is a baby rhinoceros with a tiny round stump of a horn. He has lots of toys and stuffed animals, and a cute little dog. But what he wants most is for his mother to play with him. Alas, she is too busy with all of the chores on her "must do" list, and Oliver spends a long day wistfully noting how much more fun things are when you have someone to play with. The next day, Oliver takes it upon himself to replace his mother's "must do" list with fun items of his own, and he and his mother share a very different day.
The illustrations in this book are remarkably detailed, with lots of hidden rewards to repay the careful viewer. My favorite such gift is a drawing of Oliver's patched pajamas, straining across his broad rear, with a stitched opening for his little tail. Oliver's dog is also priceless, expressive and mischievous, though never actually mentioned in the text. I also liked the detail that one day Oliver smells the clean in his favorite shirt, fresh out of the dryer, and the next day we see him wearing the shirt. Of course. It's his favorite, after all. It's all very careful attention to detail, with exuberant colors.
But what really makes Oliver's Must Do List shine is the story itself. Who hasn't noticed how difficult it is to play pirates or race-cars alone? And yet, what parent hasn't sometimes been too busy to play with an impatient child? Ultimately, Oliver's mother shows him just how much she loves him, through the time that they spend together. Oliver's Must-Do List is probably best suited to four to six year olds, who will appreciate the richly detailed pictures. I highly recommend this book.
This book review was originally published on my blog, Jen Robinson's Book Page, on May 14th.
Great Family Story!.......2005-11-15
What I like about this book is that it lends itself to the reality of the mom being busy, and the child needing attention.
Hello. . ..haven't we all been there? Wish I would have had this book when my kids were around Oliver's age!
Cool thing about Susan Taylor Brown's book is that this is also a great book for TEACHERS who are doing a unit on families. You could do so many extension activities off of Oliver. . . .fun! Fun! Fun!
Fabulous!.......2005-10-28
Oliver's Must-Do List made me teary and wish for the days when I had little ones to play with. This book will engage the reader as well as the child. The illustrations are wonderful for the busy mind/eye of a child. There is so much for a parent to engage with a child even while reading. "What is the dog doing now?" "Can you find the giraffe?" "What is your favorite part of this picture?" The author did a fabulous job of writing a playful story incorporating realistic ways to play with small children.
Oliver himself is so engaging children will want to be his friend. And because Oliver doesn't whine or beg, but is resourceful, he is a great role model for kids!
I didn't understand the reviewer saying some of the illustrations were from one point of view and some from another. I found that every spread was from the child's perspective watching Oliver and what he is doing. Some have the mother at closer range than others, but all are from the reader's perspective watching Oliver and his actions and emotions. I thought the complexity of the drawings were perfect for the active child whose mind is delighted by color, movement, play and discovering new things in the illustrations every time they read the book. They won't get bored with the story or the illustrations!
This book is just a delight in all ways. An A++ picture book.
Oliver is awesome.......2005-10-12
As a working Bay- area Mom of a 5 year old and a 4 month old - it is not surprising that time flies right out of my day and my night.
Oliver's Must Do List hits me hard as I realize the underlying message that the author is trying to put forth. Spending time doing fun stuff with the kids is an absolute priority.
Regardless of the chores around - there is always laundry to be done or mail to sort out. However those chores are always going to be there. They are not going away but my children have only a few years to be children. They will grow up and I don't want to miss out on their growing up years.
I want my kids to look back and think about the time they spent sleeping in an indoor makeshift tent or playing "dress up" with Mommy. They are not going to reminisce about the time spent doing homework or brushing their teeth before going to bed. Today I am as delighted as my cherubs that I made colored soda with Sprite and watercolors for the dolls tea party ,played tag around the coffee table, ate ice cream with pickles and potato chips. The list can go on
Oliver... is a great read for all parents along with their children - I actually feel it is an aide to planning pleasurable moments in your child's day. I would re-read this book as a constant reminder to not get caught up in my household tasks and errands that have to be run but plan some humorous and entertaining moments with the kids.
Thanks Susan Taylor Brown for providing you the insight that we all seem to miss in balancing career & home. We seem to miss out on the amusing side of life. I think I am now going to treat myself to some tomfoolery however impractical that may sound.
Go ahead you all - indulge in some comical instances today. The monkey business can keep you sane. :-)
Put THIS On Your To-Do List!.......2005-09-16
Oliver wants his mother to play with him, but her must-do list has no end. He tries to entertain himself, but the games aren't as much fun without a playmate. Oliver finds a clever solution and spends a special, fun-filled day doing what kids do best...PLAYING!
I immediately fell in love with Oliver. What a personality! Oliver feels like a real kid, begging for attention and desperate to get more mommy time. Oliver is a sweet, imaginative and enterprising kid who young readers will want to emulate.
Kids will feel Oliver's pain, and parents will share in his mother's guilt. It seems there's always too much work and no time to play! After reading this book, my own children insisted that I do not play with them enough, so I challenged them to post their own must-do lists on the refrigerator. It was also an excellent opportunity to discuss chores, responsibilities...and things we can all do around the house to help mommy have more time to play. Plus, they came up with some really great family activities!
Teachers and parents will appreciate the 12-page teaching guide available at the author's website. It's full of great classroom and at-home activities that build on the book and feed young minds. Also at the author's site: information on how you can have Oliver visit your school or book store!
Oliver's Must-Do List is a wonderful reminder to take a break for fun time, snuggle time, wish-upon-a-star time. Be sure to clear a spot on the fridge for pint-sized must-do lists before reading this book!

Book Description
Veteran teacher Judy Fujawa offers over two decades of experience in her warm, witty book of lists. Filled with the imminently practical (Creative Gift Ideas, Things to Do With Boxes, Supplies or Materials That Encourage Children to Be Creative) to the philosophical (How Children Learn, Answers to: Why Read to My Child?) to the hilarious (The "F" Words Children Are Allowed to Use, Things Found in Children's Pockets), these lists cover nearly everything one needs to know to work with and raise young children.
Reviews
This book is an excellent tool for early childhood educators starting out in their field, but even experienced teachers might enjoy going back to the basics as a reminder of what's really important to a child. The book is also useful for parents in terms of helping them understand and appreciate how teachers provide children with a positive early school experience and how they might work with teachers for the benefit of their children.

A True Gem of a Book.......2007-07-17
Judy Fujawa has written such a delightful book for parents and teachers of young children. This book makes an excellent gift for a Teacher. This is a labor of love from an early childhood educator with over twenty years of knowledge and wisdom. As the back cover states, it is inspiring, practical, entertaining, informative, and humorous. I could not put this book down until I had read every page in one sitting. It is a page turner! It does not have to be read in any particular order. Just flip it open and go for it. You will want to refer to it over and over again. A sample of items are ten commandments for teachers, things found in childrens pockets, during parent teacher conferences, what a hula hoop can be, things to make from a piece of newspaper, mottos to practice, how to encourage creativity, and so much more. I highly recommend this book.

The Cold War at a glance.......2007-07-06
"The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Cold War" is a wonderful once over of the Cold War, the defining event of the 20th Century. That conflict more than any other made the world what it is today, for better (many fewer superpowers with their hands on nukes) or worst (new wars with different concepts of armies). This book covers the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia in 1918-1919, why the Allies ceded so much of Eastern Europe to Joseph Stalin after World War II. Then it goes into Containment and the Domino theory, the Korean War and the nightmare of the Vietnam Conflict. It gives a lot of space on the men who fought the Cold War like Stalin, FDR, Joseph McCarthy, John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Mikhail Gorbachev, among many, many others. It also talks about the impact of the tensions on the people through movies and other humanities. I thought that the last chapter was a bit much, rambled on a bit about how the Clinton Administration had to clean up the Cold War mess, though from what was there I didn't see the connection, except for the wars in the Balkans. Otherwise a great starting place for anyone who wants to know about the War that shaped the 20th Century world.
cold war maybe dead, but its a hot topic!.......2005-05-06
so far, i have read the idiots guides to ww 1, ww 2 and i just finished the "idiots guide to cold war" and let me tell you, this is a great book. it is full of information that is either forgotten or rarely talked about. i learned a lot! the book starts off with the end of ww1 and continues into the mccarthy era. then, it goes into vietnam and finally ends up to sep.11 2001. pretty in depth. the only reason i gave it 4 stars is because the korean war was a little skimpy. but overall it was good just the same. it is recommended!
Not biased at all!.......2002-10-30
I can't believe I read the same book as the reviewer below. I'm a long-time student of history, particularly the McCarthy Era in the United States and abroad, and I didn't see bias in this book at all. It was very readable and filled me in on aspects of the Cold War that were new to me. I find it a little sad that someone can pick apart a book just to find fault with it when there's so much to be learned from it. As usual for the Complete Idiots series, this was a good read -- and understandable enough to pass on to young people, who seem to have very little idea of what the Cold War actually was.
Biased!.......2002-10-20
If you know the Cold War was something involving America and Russia but not much else, and want to learn more then this is a good book for filling in the blanks and adding some meat to your bones. However, it fails to mention crucial facts like Russia felt it was more than justified in installing nuclear missiles in Cuba because America had done so in Turkey years before. Russians had lived under the threat of destruction at the hands of American nuclear missiles for years, yet America panicked and was outraged when they got a taste of their own medicine.
This is a good book, but it is biased in favour of America, not mentioning the USA's faults.
"What kind of a peace do we want?....Not a Pax Americana, enforced upon the world by American weapons of war!!"
John F. Kennedy.
