4 out of 5 stars Good book for selecting old roses.......2003-09-26

This little book (paperbound and measuring only 8"x5") is a very good tool for selecting old roses for your garden. The author is from England so you might want to consult other books to see if a particular rose will grow well in your region. However, the advice this author gives is highly worthwhile. He covers over 200 roses (arranged as "Bush" roses and "Climbing" roses) and devotes 2 lengthy paragraphs to each one. The descriptions are poetic and the author also suggests ways of using the rose in the garden (color schemes, etc.) Lists are included at the back of the book which notes roses by categories (colors, good foliage, shade, small gardens, scent, informal gardens, structures). Hardiness zone maps cover both the U.S. and Europe. The photographs are excellent and are mainly close-ups (although there are outstanding full garden shot photos in the introductory chapters).

5 out of 5 stars Clear, practical guide with helpful text and illustrations.......2001-10-25

I recently moved into a house with a yard and a variety of trees, vines, and Roses. I have read large gardening references before in attempts to prune planter box trees and gardens, but never walked away with the sense that I could actually prune and train my plants successfully. This book began with definitions of terminology, tool selection, and provided clear text and multiple helpful drawings and pictures all geared towards the intelligent adult. It addreses the unique properties of the various fruit trees, rose bushes, vines, and shrubs, and gives advice as to when to hire and how to choose an arborist. It helped me understand the impact of pruning and has made me a more educated 'tree' observer.

I cannot see myself ever needing to buy another pruning book! I would highly recommend this for complete and straight forward pruning guide.

3 out of 5 stars A useful if not exhaustive resource.......2003-02-22

The Taylor's Guide to Roses is, like its companion volumes, handy to have around as a supplement to other books on roses. In itself it is neither complete nor entirely reliable; however, its many attractive photos are useful, especially for people who are not familiar with the various classifications of roses. I particularly appreciate that it gives equal space to old roses, shrub roses, and species, as the round of hybrid teas grows tiresome to the eye and these plants deserve far more garden space than they receive.

Overall, best used as a visual aid for form--color, as in any book, is subject to the vagaries of nature and photography.

2 out of 5 stars Not for Western Gardeners.......2001-09-11

All of the Taylor books seem to be written for non-western gardens. I have 4 of their books and yet whenever I want to look up a plant I've seen in a nursery I rarely find it in these books. This is not the book you want if you are hoping for a good resource for roses. This is a guide book, when you want to look up a rose you saw at a nursery to find out a little more about it. The book divides the roses by class so if you are like most people and looking to buy a hybrid tea this book has fewer than 100. There are thousands and thousands of roses on the market, the odds that you will find it in this book is nil unless you are looking for Peace or the most common. This is a small book, you could spend your money better elsewhere. I recommend Botanica's Encyclopedia of Roses.

4 out of 5 stars Guide is great for zone selection........2000-05-09

This book is great if you're trying to determine which roses will work best for your zone. However, be aware that if you're looking at this book as a resource/color guide for cut flowers, garden flowers and the roses you buy from a florist are different! These are garden favorites(with a few hybrids).

Best to buy this selection to help you decide on what's right for your zone/region. And hey, its $5 cheaper than it is at Garden.com!

                5 out of 5 stars Childhood Memory.......2006-01-07

My Mom used to read this to me when I was little, and coincidently, I picked it up from our library while writing my personal statement for graduate school. I also am looking for "invisible enemies" like Louis Pasteur's; I am pursuing a Ph.D. in Immunology and Microbiology.

                5 out of 5 stars Hilarious memory.......2005-05-07

This book was a vivid memory from when I was little so I had to order it. It is humorous while it delivers the life story of rabies scientist Louis Pasteur.

5 out of 5 stars Best teaching book EVER!.......2005-02-27

I had this series as a child and LOVED it. This particular book was my favorite in the series. I can still remember the storyline. My set had been handed down to my sister. Now that she has grown up, I'm not sure where they have landed, but I intend to get the entire set again.

                3 out of 5 stars A gripping story . . . uh, yeah!.......2004-10-13

Presents a good lesson featuring the best scientist in history for whom I have a deep respect, but gives me nightmares since I read it as a kid! I researched the real story and some facts are incorrect. If I liked it, yes & no for these reasons. Haunting,& it changed the course of my life.

Walking down their road one day, Marc Parent's son Casey spied a dead squirrel. This prompted a discussion about life and death, God and Heaven, after which Casey asked, "Can we kick it?" There is nobody like a child to look life's greatest mysteries square in the eye, and there is no writer like Marc Parent to translate children's revelations to the rest of us. He tries to teach his sons how to win at his favorite board games, but learns instead the real joy of making up your own incoherent rules. He nurtures their compassion; they teach him about love and forgiveness in the face of anger. This is a book about the things we knew as children--about gratitude and playfulness, acceptance and love--that elude us as adults.

                5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book--don't miss it!.......2005-02-28

This book is wonderful beyond words. I read it, then my husband read it. We both laughed (I cried) and agreed that it was, indeed, one of the best books we have ever read (and we read quite a bit). Anyone who has children should read this and keep a copy on hand. We have purchased at least five copies and hand them out to friends who are expecting, grandparents, relatives, etc... The writing is great and the subject matter endearing.

3 out of 5 stars How life is like if you choose to a full parent .......2005-01-24

I am not a parent thus, this book allows me an insight into full time parenthood. I was attracted to this book not because it preaches parental duties, rather, I was intrigued by what a child could teach me about life- the title of the edition that I have does not mention trout fishing nor jelly toast. Before I commenced reading this book, I already have preconceived ideas about what these teachings are. Got some of these correct while missing some. One that struck me intensely was the depiction of the elder child wanting to kick a dead squirrel. How real and how many times we want to do the same but never cos' it is not the honorable thing to do, so we think. But kids are more intuitive and unpolluted by the adult notion of what's right and what's wrong. They just do what come to their mind. The search for a good school will strike a chord with any parent struggling to decide which school is best for his/ her child.

                4 out of 5 stars Refreshing Perspective.......2002-02-04

Marc Parent knows what it's all about: the small things. Maple syrup and cowboy boots. Autumn leaves and Play Doh. The ironic afternoon on that ordinary Wednesday with the ceaselessly crying baby, the gap-toothed kindergartner, chocolate milk dribbled on the good sofa, no-you-can't-have-another-cookie. And silently pleading for five quiet minutes to write one more paragraph...one more page...daddy will be right there. Although the work at home option is idealized in current society, "Believing It All: What my Children Taught Me About Trout Fishing, Jelly Toast, and Life" provides an accurate yet optimistic viewpoint, observing children with their uncomplicated lives, simple pleasures exchanged all too soon, and the commitment needed to juggle work/family in the same location. A memoir more interested in the everyday nothing that constitutes a life of something, it's surprisingly worth a read for the 20-something childless as well as the harried soccer Mom (or Dad) who can relate entirely too well. Stroller walks, afternoon naps, and tying shoes. The novelty of all the small things which so quickly pass away, yielding to yellow school buses and the Nintendo blur. Laugh, cry, remember, anticipate, and perhaps most of all, face your brood with renewed mirth after an hour of peace and quiet reading alone on that milk-stained sofa.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo to the man pushing the double stroller!.......2001-08-04

As a part-time stay-at-home dad, I greatly enjoyed reading "Believing It All". It did take me awhile mostly because I didn't want it to end (also due to frequent diaper changes, nose wiping, sprinkler running cleanup, etc. ) Many of the challenges Marc and Susan faced (and are currently facing) during their two boy's early years will be familiar to parents of young children, but above this I would say this book is a must read for anyone who has children, who is thinking about having children, and who cares about children in any way. This book, I believe, charts a course for a new way of interacting with children and it's the best book I've read in a long time. Keep up the good work, Marc!

5 out of 5 stars Before you have children: read this book.......2001-07-21

If you feel you aren't capable of dealing with the stories Marc brings up in this book, think twice about bringing a child into this world. People register their dogs, doctor's should pass this book out when they talk to woman about having children.

Great book. I too, miss Casey and Owen.

The story is good. But I can't understand the story. Its totally mixed up. In addition, there is no inteesting extracts. But I still stink its only OK! So think twice before reading. But its great and the author is great too.

                        Book Description

I started writing childrenÂ's books to help our children develop their imaginations. My books are intended to open up the wonderful world of loving to read, stories that children of all ages can enjoy. I add a little magic and creative fun to challenge young minds to not only face their fears but to get over them. Once a child has finished a story, he or she will have learned that, although it would be good to have some magical wand, the true magic is within. That is something that sitting in front of a TV all day wonÂ't teach. To learn this, children must be taught that knowing is truly believing in reading.
