Good research education.......2006-11-06
This book is required for a course I'm taking, so I HAD to buy it. But--it's very logically and concisely written, but also easy for the layperson (I am not a researcher). I'd recommend it as a how-to or resource book for any level of research study.
Book Description
As the field of family therapy continues to expand, novel (and often contradictory) theoretical models constantly arise to challenge the established practice. While these philosophical debates over methodology, practical techniques and theory are often highly beneficial and enlightening to the seasoned practitioner, there is a real need among therapists of all levels of experience for a comprehensive, consistent approach to family therapy. Such discussions can expand the knowledge base of all involved, but it is important that a practitioner remain clear and consistent in her approach (both theoretical and practical) when working with an actual family. As the authors of this book point out, it is all too often that a practitioner borrows "bits and pieces" from different therapeutic models when in session with clients, a practice that can leave the family in a chaotic state of confusion, misunderstanding and mistrust.
The McMaster model presents and integrative approach to therapy, based on a clearand consistent conceptual framework designed to facilitate the seamless assessment and diagnosis of family functioning, and ultimately the successful practice of family therapy. The model is structured enough to provide the groundwork needed for interviewing, assessment, diagnosis and the formulation of an effective treatment plan. And yet it is flexible enough to be used in a wide variety of clinical, research and training situations. Nathan Epstein - the man recognized as the main developer of the McMaster model - and his co-authors have, in this comprehensive compendium, gathered together five lifetimes worth of experience in order to present this easily accessible conception of family therapy.
This comprehensive text is organized into two parts, the first of which presents an overview of the history, development, and theory of the model, and its specific applications to treatment, training, assessment, and research. Part II includes the instruments and assessment tools originally developed by the authors during their extensive clinical and research experience. Clinical case examples drawn from over four decades of family therapy work enrich the text, and an entire chapter is devoted to the authors' own research findings, current research plans, and new directions in their work.

Customer Reviews:
Great Over view of Family Therapy Theory.......2007-09-09
I used this book for a master class. It has great over views of family therapy theory. Well worth reading.
Really Good... as far as it goes, but the editorializing is odd.......2007-06-01
What I like: There's very little of significance in the field that Nichols and Schwartz have failed to include in the series of seven editions, and they're so deep in the trenches and so well-connected to the ground-breakers that each new edition will pretty reliably cover the latest developments, techniques and empirical research. It's hard to think of anyone else who's doing as -thorough- a job of grounding newcomers as these guys. That said...
What I don't like: The authors seem to have -some- continuing biases against proven philosophy, method and empirical data from the medical model, existential, interpersonal (this really -is- surprising) and other schools of thought and practice that make me continue to scratch my scalp when I run into them. Also... I get further, -faster-, with the Karpman Drama Triangle than almost any other tool I have in the box... and this series has ignored it since the git.
Useful Book.......2006-06-20
I purchased this book for a graduate level course in family therapy. I found it very helpful in explaining the important theories of family therapy. It also highlights therapeutic techniques and provides vignettes of how the theory might apply in a real life situation. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a basic theoretical background in family therapy.
Required text book.......2006-03-10
I bought this book because it is a requirement for a graduate level class I am taking in the MSW program where I live, otherwise I don't know that I would have purchased it. However, it is full of good research information and practical applications with clients.
Student review.......2006-01-05
As a graduate student, I found this book very helpful. It is a perfect introduction to the subject writen with the care that teaches well. I would recommend this for any library that needs an excellent broad overview.

Read but make your own conclusions.......2007-06-08
The book is well written and captures attention with many real-life examples and some well-thought conclusions. It would be a great book if not for a very narrow-minded stance on the role of guns in self-defense.
The outright dismissal (and, therefore, exclusion from any subsequent discussion) simply goes down to a primitive statement that "guns don't work because an intelligent person will hesitate before pulling a trigger". Period. Nothing to discuss.
Well, being a police officer the lead author definitely knows that thousands of defensive gun uses every year in the US (with most of them not even requiring pulling a trigger) are successful and DO work. What makes him speak untruth then? I do not know. But let his conscience deal with that.
Moreover, the second part of the statement, "will hesitate...", is in a direct contradiction to the advice given throughout the book! Have a plan and be ready to implement it -- all very good advice. Be intelligent enough to pre-play in your mind various scenarious of a violent encounter before you actually need them. Decide on what you are going to do beforehand. Have the solutions ready, so you not waste time devising them in the heat of the moment. Perfect! Great!...
But... If the authors believe an intelligent person can do this, what is so different about using the same idea for a gun self-defense? Sorry, it insults my intelligence...
Anyway, the book is good even if only for its collection of stories.
Say no more JJ is against gun ownership...........2000-04-12
With the overwhelming evidence that GUNS SAVE LIVES, Bittenbinder's personal stance against firearms is unreasonable and unrealistic. The rest of the information in this book is better presented in another text by a well known former policeman turned Oprah guest and TV Star, Sanford Strong. While Strong like Bittenbinder doesn't like firearms he doesn't let a personal bias get in the way of saving someone's life. I really only give 3 stars as it is a decent reminder for everything that I already knew from reading Strong Against Crime.
Excellent and practical information on "staying safe.".......1999-09-02
I have a wall-to-ceiling library of books about privacy, security, self-defense and asset protection. "Tough Target" is one of my favorites. The authors tell what works and what does not. Especially good tips on foiling carjackers. Ideal gift for those that travel.
Very frank and direct, practical advice and common sense.......1998-09-29
Everyone should use this book and don't be afraid to read it. It could save your life.

Customer Reviews:
BEST, PRACTICAL, SELF-DEFENSE BOOK I'VE READ.......2003-09-13
This book should DEFINITELY be back in print. Some examples of its practical advice are: when outside at night (e.g., at ATMs), stay in well lighted places where there are other people; if you feel threatened, yell "fire" not "help" (people are more likely to come to your rescue when they think they are in danger too); purses with long straps that are carried over the head, not on a shoulder are harder to snatch; carry pepper spray--harder to get since 9/11 but search the Internet--and check with your local police department about its use. Bittenbinder is a former Chicago police detective.
