Red Hot Root Words.......2007-02-08
Great resource to increase your child's vocabulary. Nicely organized workbook, challenging; the prefect way to supplement my kids school work. My fifth grader enjoys spelling much more -- by using his knowledge of root words as clues to the meaning of words!
Book Description
Part history, part cultural commentary, part memoir, The Roots of Desire is a witty and entertaining investigation into what it means to be a redhead.
A redhead rarely goes unnoticed in a crowded room. From Judas Iscariot to Botticelli's Venus to Julianne Moore, redheads have been worshipped, idealized, fetishized, feared, and condemned, leaving their mark on us and our culture. Such is the power of what is actually a genetic mutation, and in The Roots of Desire, Marion Roach takes a fascinating look at the science behind hair color and the roles redheads have played over time. She discovers that in Greek mythology, redheads become vampires after they die; Hitler banned intermarriage with redheads for fear of producing "deviant offspring"; women with red hair were burned as witches during the Inquisition; in Hollywood, female redheads are considered sexy while male redheads are considered a hard sell; and in the nineteenth century, it was popular belief that redheads were the strongest scented of all women, smelling of amber and violets. Redheads have been stereotyped, marginalized, sought after, and made to function as everything from a political statement to a symbol of human carnality. A redhead herself, Roach brings candor and brilliant insight to the complicated and revealing history of redheads, making this a stand-out narrative and an essential tool in understanding the mechanics and phenomenon of red hair.

Redheads Rock.......2007-03-30
Marion Roach, NPR correspondent, is a redhead, and aims to get to the bottom of redhead mythology in our culture. She discusses the oldest famous redheads, like Lilith (Adam's pre-Eve wife in the bible), Set, and Mary Magdalene. She also gets into the genetics of red hair, and explains why it's rare. She also discusses the historical attributes associated with red hair through time. It was formerly thought that Jews were redheads, and later, that redheads were not to be trusted. More currently, red hair is associated with sexual prowess and a hot temper. This book is a fun and intellectually satisfying read, especially for redheads.
Sleep-Inducing at best........2007-02-22
This book poses somewhat of a conundrum. Is it an over-thought monologue on the author's own hair color, or an exceedingly dull scholarly treatise? The answer: it is both! It's a hodge-podge of historical references, anecdotes, and Patty Scialfa. Never delving deep enough into the history, it manages to still lay on what it does say with an all-too heavy brush, dripping with overindulgent prose.
In the end, it is sound and fury signifying... the onset of sleep. If you are in need of a never-ending supply of sleep medication, save yourself some money and buy this book. If not, don't bother.
interesting read.......2007-01-10
I learned a bit about redheads--not as much as I would have liked to, but it was well written
Take the Ride!.......2006-08-26
Get ready to ride through history, science, lore, myth and fun stuff about redheads. It takes one to know one! I have recommended this book to other redheads, and will continue to do so. And yes, we are different!
Not bad........2006-08-25
Marion Roach, The Roots of Desire: The Myth, Meaning, and Sexual Power of Red Hair (Bloomsbury, 2005)
There's something about redheads, isn't there? Marion Roach aims to find out what, exactly, it is. And while, at the end of this little tome, we know that there are some genetic difference, and a good deal of myth and folklore, the mystery of the redhead is still preserved. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing is entirely up to you.
Roach divides the book into three parts, with the first covering the myths and legends, the second the science, and the third... well, it's supposed to be the allure. But it actually ends up being a meshing of the driving forces of the two sections that preceded it; those looking for prurient interest are likely to be quite disappointed. That said, the book is never less than readable, and Roach's personal quest, which is what the thesis of this book boils down to, is engaging enough that it's unlikely the reader will find himself with an overwhelming necessity to, say, throw the book under the couch to feed the dustbunnies.
I get the feeling there could have been more to this book-- a lot more, perhaps-- but an equal part of me feels that it simply wouldn't to do get rid of the mystery altogether, would it? ***
Book Description
The Red Roots of Terrorism describes the persistence of terrorism through the ages and gives examples of the use of this tactic to further many different kinds of philosophies.
The author contends that persons capable of participating in terrorist acts exist in all ethnic groups and in most, if not all, political aggregations. Many different causes and groups provide congenial homes for such people, and afford them guidance and protection.
Many examples of terrorist acts within the US and throughout the world are given, and the inadequate steps which have been taken to punish past actions and forestall future events are described.
The author suggests that strong measures are needed to prevent congenital terrorists from harming innocent victims, and provides suggestions for remedies.
The book contains a preface, 22 chapters, glossary, bibliography, and index.

Lost American.......2007-01-13
Theories put forth in this book are so far-fetched that it is hard to believe they can be found in print. Conspiracy theory has been taken to its ultimate right wing conclusions, and all those theories linked into one unbelievable piece of propaganda. Of course that makes it entertaining, at times, until you realize that this author is serious about it. There is plenty of logic used here, but you have to accept his evidence at face value to believe. It doesn't work if you have ever read deeply in the subjects he covers. The author is so far removed from society he should be living in a utopian commune, like the Amish, if he really practices what he preaches. But his attempt here to convince the world of his view is fraught with logical inconsistency, incomplete perspectives, and extreme bias.
Academically speaking... pure garbage........2007-01-11
If you are stuck in the Red Scare and looking for self-affirming, right wing, anti-semitic entertainment, this is the book for you.
I was required to purchase this for a post-graduate terrorism course and will be demanding an explanation. The book - which never does define 'terrorism' - is mostly useless, ill-cited name calling, complete with grammatical errors. A quick look at the references in the back reveals what sort of drivel this is.
Nearly one third of the references (96 of 310 in a hasty count) are from the Wall Street Journal. Other news sources include the Chicago Tribune, US News & World Report, The New Yorker, and Parade Magazine (!). WSJ is a perfectly good newspaper and these sources are fine for news or for the occasional factual citation (better to cite the source, like AP or Reuters), but to base any book that purports to be remotely academic on news sources like this is weak at best. The reason for this is that these sources are focused on printing daily or weekly news, corroborated or not, and are NOT subject to any sort of expert review like an academic journal is. Not only that, but plenty of the articles are from the Op-Ed page, including LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.
Some of the articles from scientific sources may be legitimate, and plenty of books are cited (though plenty of text remains wanting for citation). However, there is nothing from ANY terrorism journal (of which there are several well-respected journals in fields of terrorism studies, counterterrorism, and security), post-communist studies journal, or social science journal, conservative or otherwise. There is also probably not much by anyone you have ever heard of, if you happen to study terrorism or communism.
While www.jeffsarchive.com (also cited) is no longer available, the author Ian McKinney (cited) can still be found at www.theunjustmedia.com alongside other winners who promote ideas like "Timothy McVeigh may have unknowningly been an Army/CIA guinea pig involved in a classified telemetric/mind-control project," in compelling articles like "Brain Zapping - Electronic Mind Control - Part One."
Hmm... vaguely reminiscent of a technique I used in Jr. High to gain credibility in research papers: cite a lot of stuff, no matter where it came from. (Citing newspapers was ok back then, but by undergrad I would have gotten blasted if my bibliography looked ANYTHING like this. And I attended a military academy, not exactly a liberal university haven that Hartwright would probably deem full of godless pinko fags).
Additionally, what information is available on the publisher should put the academic value of the book into question. Cui Bono Books, after cursory internet research, appears to be a side project of Pan-Tech International, which publishes reference books on baking technology. Cui Bono only has a handful of tomes: those by Hartwright and those written under a pseudonym (F.X. Foulke-ffeinberg) on biblical topics and the virtual campus (also cited in Red Roots of Terrorism, incidentally). Hartwright's other 2 books are on the JFK assassination (has a nice Amazon review) and on the Vincent Foster death.
All evidence points to this book being academically worthless, and Cui Bono books being a recreational endeavor by Hartwright, who would do us all a service by sticking to baking technology studies.
For some excellent books on actual terrorism, try these:
Root Causes of Terrorism, by Tore Bjorgo (ed)
Inside Terrorism, by Bruce Hoffman
Seeds of Terror, by Maria Ressa (southeast Asia focus)
Al Qaeda, by Jason Burke (Al Qaeda focus)
Genral Review of The Red Roots of Terrorism.......2007-01-10
Definently written from a conservative perspective, Hartwright focuses on communism, and more specifically the governmental influences within this societal structure that perpetuate terrorism and their attempts in further inoculate the free world's beuracracies (i.e. academia, politics, and the church). Inarguably written from a more conservative perspective, this is one of those books that tries to push the reader into the extreme, in hopes of at least swaying the reader to acknowledge the continued ills of communism that continue to lurk within America.
The other review.......2006-09-27
The other review says: ".......but to smear an entire religion and group with the oldest and vilest of stereotypes and characterizations is outrageous." Quite right, but other than that, there are some very interesting and useful facts in this book.
The remarks taken as bigoted should just be ignored (and simply the best taken from the book), in the spirit that Christians are similarly expected to do regarding the Talmud - in which Jesus is described as illegitimate and Mary (his Mother) as a Prostitute - that can also be described as outrageous (the Encyclopaedia Judaica describes the Talmud as defaming Jesus).
Anti-Semitic Claptrap.......2006-05-10
Mr Hartwright resurrects all the anti-Semitic canards from throughout history. I felt that I was reading the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Adolf Hitler could NOT have written the chapter on Judaism any viler. Fact are facts as to the composition of certain movements and political groups, but to smear an entire religion and group with the oldest and vilest of stereotypes and characterizations is outrageous.
I hope Herr Hartwright enjoys his springtime goosesteps through the park. Perhaps he will have the chance to step on some puppies while he does so.

A GREAT story for kids about practical recycling!.......2000-06-25
This amusing picture book is great to teach kids that not everything valuable is bought in a store. The old red rocking chair of the title is discarded with the garbage because, though perfectly usable, it is worn and does not match the owner's new blue sofa. It is claimed by a series of interesting people who each use it for a while and then discard it, as it becomes more and more thoroughly "used." Each owner enjoys it and eventually discards it. After it loses both arms, its back, and its rockers, it becomes a stool, its seat carefully covered with blue wool from a discarded coat. In the end it is bought at a yard sale by its original owner, who admires the stool because it matches her blue sofa!
The pictures in this book are wonderfully interesting and amusing, but unfortunately in the printing process some turned out rather dark. I suspect that is why this book did not get the attention it deserved when it was first published, and why it is now out of print. What a shame.
This is a great book for elementary teachers to use in a recycling unit, and for any family who has ever found and used something discarded by someone else!
Book Description
On a Saturday night in 1948, Hank Williams stepped onto the stage of the Louisiana Hayride and sang "Lovesick Blues." Up to that point, Williams's yodeling style had been pigeon-holed as hillbilly music, cutting him off from the mainstream of popular music. Taking a chance on this untried artist, the Hayride--a radio "barn dance" or country music variety show like the Grand Ole Opry--not only launched Williams's career, but went on to launch the careers of well-known performers such as Jim Reeves, Webb Pierce, Kitty Wells, Johnny Cash, and Slim Whitman. Broadcast from Shreveport, Louisiana, the local station KWKH's 50,000-watt signal reached listeners in over 28 states and lured them to packed performances of the Hayride's road show. By tracing the dynamic history of the Hayride and its sponsoring station, ethnomusicologist Tracey Laird reveals the critical role that this part of northwestern Louisiana played in the development of both country music and rock and roll. Delving into the past of this Red River city, she probes the vibrant historical, cultural, and social backdrop for its dynamic musical scene. Sitting between the Old South and the West, this one-time frontier town provided an ideal setting for the cross-fertilization of musical styles. The scene was shaped by the region's easy mobility, the presence of a legal "red-light" district from 1903-17, and musical interchanges between blacks and whites, who lived in close proximity and in nearly equal numbers. The region nurtured such varied talents as Huddie Ledbetter, the "king of the twelve-string guitar," and Jimmie Davis, the two term "singing governor" of Louisiana who penned "You Are My Sunshine." Against the backdrop of the colorful history of Shreveport, the unique contribution of this radio barn dance is revealed. Radio shaped musical tastes, and the Hayride's frontier-spirit producers took risks with artists whose reputations may have been shaky or whose styles did not neatly fit musical categories (both Hank Williams and Elvis Presley were rejected by the Opry before they came to Shreveport). The Hayride also served as a training ground for a generation of studio sidemen and producers who steered popular music for decades after the Hayride's final broadcast. While only a few years separated the Hayride appearances of Hank Williams and Elvis Presley--who made his national radio debut on the show in 1954--those years encompassed seismic shifts in the tastes, perceptions, and self-consciousness of American youth. Though the Hayride is often overshadowed by the Grand Ole Opry in country music scholarship, Laird balances the record and reveals how this remarkable show both documented and contributed to a powerful transformation in American popular music.
Customer Reviews:
Great insight into a fascinating subject.......2004-12-04
I can't recommend this book enough. It tells the story of a pivotal time in the development of musical history and culture, back when the participants themselves would never have guessed that they were making history. In a time before mass communication and cable TV, The Louisiana Hayride broadcast and promoted the emerging music to an audience almost nationwide. No doubt it propelled the genre and the artists toward their history making futures. The author paints a detailed picture of the genre that makes you feel as if you were there yourself. Her style of writing draws you into the story. I highly recommend this book for everyone.

Book Description
Everybody talks about an empowered workforce but no one has one. Managers constantly complain that their people are more empowered than they think they are. They've told them they're empowered, so why don't their people act like it? Firstly, it's not enough to just tell people they are empowered - you have to show them. And secondly, because from the beginning empowerment has been driven by consultants. It's been delivered by high-cost, low-impact, top-down initiatives. Now people in business are waking up to the fact that you can't deliver empowerment with hit and run consultants. If you want your people to be engaged in and continually improving the business, they've got to be doing it for themselves. The answer is Grass Roots Management. Give people the plans, tools, time, money and permission, and watch them build your business. This volume demonstrates how to get your people, at all levels, to build your business for you and make it succeed.

Book Description
For Frank Gannon, being Irish-American has nothing to do with Lucky Charms, Irish Spring, leprechauns, and "the wretched thing that has been made of St. Patrick's Day." It means returning to the land where his deceased parents were born in search of his own Irish identity. Soon, he will discover much about his mother and father, and even more about himself. MIDLIFE IRISH draws on the universal themes of love, loss, and laughter that have kept the Irish both miserable and happy-often at the same time -throughout the years.

Keep your expectations modest, and you'll enjoy this book........2005-09-15
That attitude is also, by the way, a healthy one to take to Ireland. While there, I was simultaneously reading Nuala O'Faolain's "Are You Somebody? -The Accidental Autobiography of a Dublin Woman", which may have been unfair to Gannon's book, since O'Faolain is a fantastic artist with the English language (as spoken by the silver-tongued Irish.) Gannon is nowhere near the writer that O'Faolain is, but his account is still touching in its simplicity and lack of pretension. Gannon is who he is, his parents were who they were, and his book is what it is. Accept that, and you'll have an enjoyable reading experience.
So inaccurate it's not worth your time.......2005-07-06
On page 71 the author says that Irish is a Germanic language like English. It is NOT! It is a Celtic language very distant from Germanic languages like English. The author goes on to say, "The English language is very ancient in Ireland. Despite what people say, English as a language is not something that was `imposed' on the people by outsiders." That is the most blatantly false statement on the Irish language I have ever read. Anyone who knows anything about the Irish language knows what the author said above is absolutely wrong and damaging to the Irish language. These statements alone should tell you NOT to buy this book or even check it out from a library. After reading that I put the book away. Don't even bother with it.
In 1990,there were 70 million Irish living outside Ireland........2005-03-21
I had never seen nor heard of this book or its author when I picked it up.I must admit, it didn't do much for me,particularly in the first quarter of the book.Like another reviewer, it also hit me as disjointed and in need of a lot of editing. As a matter of fact, I nearly gave up on it.That would have been a big mistake. After finishing it,I still feel the book gets a lot better, from every respect, the further you get into it.
I have been to Ireland three times and find it an absolutely fascinating country. The people, history, landscape, music, literature
and all, fail to amaze me.
Gannon is impressed with the Irish skill in the use of language as I am and he is a writer, and he should know. What the Irish can do with language does not come from a book, can't be taught in school;it comes from the soul--and as far as I can tell-it has to come from an Irish soul.
I was really taken by Gannon's concept of "thin places".He mentions several and made me think of some too: Sitting on the base of Molly Malone's statute talking to a couple of street people,Kennys Bookstore in Galway,A stroll up Fall's Road in Belfast,B&B at Trinity College,Blarney Castle,Grafton Street,Gogarty's in Temple Bar,Shop Street in Galway,Sitting in the Lord Mayor,s chair in Belfast,Joseph Plunkett's cell and the Chapel where he married Grace Gifford before being executed in Kilmainham Gaol in 1916,just to name few.
You'll surely enjoy this book if you've ever been to or plan to visit Ireland.
Funny, Revealing, Enlightening Journey of Discovery.......2003-05-04
This book, which is not a travel book nor a psychological treatise although it has elements of both, will bring a feeling of recognition and self discovery to many Irish-Americans like myself. Gannon accurately reflects the upbringing in an Irish home where many things are left unsaid and much of family history is shrouded in mystery. His trip to Ireland to learn more about his parents and his forebears is a treat--enlightening, educational and very funny. It is also dead-on in its take on Ireland and the Irish. It is a fascinating trip that will keep the reader laughing and engrossed. Highly recommended.
surprisingly touching and funny........2003-04-27
I recieved this book as a present. I thought of it as a sort of travel book, but it's something much different. It's a very funny, personal and touching book. It's not a "fact book", and I don't think it pretends to be. But it is very memorable, very funny , and very entertaining. Just a lovely read. At the end I was genuinely moved
