5 out of 5 stars Get the whole series!.......2006-05-15

I've read a lot of books on herbalism, but this series of books is a unique and extremely valuable find. Dale Pendell covers a wide variety of herbs and their affects on the human mind, body and spirit. What makes his book different from others is the poetic way in which he conveys his information. It makes reading the books far from dull or dry, and some herbal books read like medical textbooks in that sense. The authors brilliance, wisdom and sheer depth and bredth of knowledge shines through in this series, and I can't think of any other books that cover the "poisonous" herbs and substances in such a way. Read Pharmako/Poeia and you will probably want to buy Pharmako/Dynamis and Pharmako/Gnosis. They are all valuable to the herbalist, folklorist, entheobotanist, or anyone who just wants to know about the uses and side effects of various plants that are often stigmatized in our culture. Subjects range from:

Opium
Marjuana
Alcohol (beer, wine, distilled spirits)
Absinthe
Salvia
Tobacco
Nitrous
Kava Kava
And even, fossil fuel.

But don't think that he advocates the use (or abuse) of all these plants. He gives you the information, what they do, their history, and side effects. You will find no propaganda or scare tactics, just the truth (and the truth of what some of these plants can do is scary enough without embellishment!)

Another plus of these books: They're aesthetically pleasing. I honestly can't think of any problems with this series of books: Informative, accurate and beautiful. Dale Pendell is an asset to the herbalist community.

5 out of 5 stars A Joyous Journey.......2005-09-10

I was sorry to reach the last page of this mind altering, funny, informative and absolutely joyous book. Hadn't had this much fun reading a book since I read Milky Way Marmalade! Should be required reading for every parent, teen and politician.

I just discovered Dale Pendell has a 2nd book Pharmako/Dynamis and have already ordered it!

5 out of 5 stars The Poison Path and Kindred Spirits.......2005-01-03

"Finally" is the word that succinctly describes how I feel about this book. Every page, I mean, practically every line, contains wit, humor, insight, and wisdom all written with the utmost eloquence. Pendell's breadth of knowledge in his not-so-small area of expertise is simply awesome, in the true sense of the word. This way is not for all, however, and the type of person attracted to Pendell's work, as he puts it himself, is probably eccentric. What makes perfect sense to me is scoffed at by my friends. So I keep things to myself more often, the views and practices found in this book not being an exception. This is a volume full of ancient herbal lore and methodology (but not just confined to that), it is exceedingly fun to read, and I couldn't love it more. I've got volume 2 on the way, and as another reviewer has already mentioned, Mercury House is sluggish when it comes to releasing these books. Volume 3, which for me is going to be the most interesting, was due to be released August/September 04 and now that date has been pushed back to August/September 05, and I do hope that it doesn't take any longer than that.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful overview of medicinal plants...........2003-04-06

PHARMAKO-DYNAMIS and PHARMAKO-POEIA by Dale Pendell contain much of interest to gardeners, artists, historians, drug counselors, and drug users. Pendell suggests that how a plant substance is defined (poison, drug, medicine) depends on the dosage, length of use, and intent of the user. In other words, if plant-based drugs are "abused" the problem lies not in our plants but in our selves. He says the reader can begin anywhere in either of his two books and arrive at the same place. I read PHARMAKO-POEIA last, not because it isn't interesting, but because coffee, tea, and cocao are covered in DYNAMIS. As a tea drinker, I wanted to find out more about my herb of choice before I ventured onto others.

POEIA includes a wonderful section on Absinthe which may be related to the seduction of angels. Students of 19th Century French art history and the Belle Epoch know about Absinthe. Absinthe is that lovely green substance the Impressionist painters liked to portray, which according to some was the devil's own drink (he being a fallen angel). Wilde was fond of Absinthe, and may have been using it when he wrote "The Portrait of Dorian Grey." On the other hand, it may have been his drug of choice when he developed his witty and amusing stage plays. Readers associated with Lewis' Screwtape Letters will recognize Absinthe's plant name-Wormwood. Wormwood was probably the bitter herb offered Christ in his last hour of agony and Revelations 8:10,11 has something to say about it. Artemisia is Wormwood's proper name, and the Greek Artemisia is the Roman Diana, Goddess of the Moon. Pendell says Oberon uses `Dian's bud' to reverse the effects of a love potion in A Midsummer Night's Dream. What was Shakespeare thinking??

Besides Artemisia and Valerian, Pendell discusses a few other suspect plants I grow in my own garden, such as Papaver, the Opium Poppy. Oh the feds tried to ban it once, but all the little old ladies came after them and Poppy reigns supreme in American cottage gardens. According to Pendell, the worldwide persecution of the Poppy plant continues even though Poppy plants (and Cannabis) have killed far fewer people than tobacco plants. This is wonderful wise book for crafty gardeners and their friends.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!.......2002-03-18

I am an herbalist, and I found this book by Pendell and Snyder to be full of information that was presented in a fascinating way. Interestingly, finding information about herbal poisons isn't as easy as it might seem, but is still important. I can honestly say I learned a few things from this book that I did not realize, particularly from a historical standpoint! I can't wait to get my hands on the other two volumes as soon as they become available - however I have been waiting for almost a year for the promised second and third volumes of the book. I am hoping that the publisher or author can give us a firmer lead time for their final release.

    Book Description

"Dale Pendell reactivates the ancient connection between the bardic poet and the shaman."-Terence McKenna

In Pharmako/Dynamis, Dale Pendell continues his exploration of psychoactive plants begun in Pharmako/Poeia. Pharmacognosy is the study of the composition, production, use, and history of drugs of natural origin. Pendell covers these topics and more in this volume, charting a voyage around the world of plant teachers. Through poetry, chemistry, and a generous sprinkling of arcane lore, Pendell weaves and twists the many threads of tradition into a singularly bewitching brew. Pendell's voyage is a true circumnavigation. It divulges what Gary Synder called "dangerous knowledge" that is a formidable weapon against "even more dangerous ignorance."

Dale Pendell is a poet, software engineer, and longtime student of ethnobotany. His poetry has appeared in many journals, and he was the founding editor of KUKSU: Journal of Backcountry Writing. He has led workshops on ethnobotany and ethnopoetics for the Naropa Institute and the Botanical Preservation Corps.

                  Book Description

Just when a woman's learned how to wind her way through a life of temp jobs and commitment-phobic boyfriends, she has to face the biggest nightmare yet--turning 30. What with everything on that "To Do Before 30" list still left undone and and the biological clock ticking all too loudly, even the most sensible chicks come a little unglued when their fourth decade is upon them.

Luckily, humor writer Julie Tilsner is here to help. A Business Week editor who ditched New York City and a successful career for a kibbutz in Israel when the big day closed in on her, Tilsner recounts her experience and those of many other women in this pithy, insightful, and uproarious self-help book.

                  5 out of 5 stars Light-weight life saver - perfect bath reading.......2004-05-27

I gave this to my major fox babe, SaraJ, for *her* 30th along with the Fruit Bats' "Mouthfuls" CD.

Thanks to Amazon's amazing 'Search Inside the Book' ability, I was able to confirm 29's total suitability and silliness as a gift from sexy Sara's 'Jerk Official Reserve Date' (JORD), which is my discreet rôle when her Davy's not around or when he's committed some adorable gaffe that calls for exile and a strategic pout.

Title apart, which got me a biff round the ear for dubbing Sara a 'chick' (voluptuous vixens are *never* chicks: they spring fully formed from the womb as major babes), the book is humorous enough to read snippets from aloud after the second bottle of Dom Perignon. Or, à deux, over a jug of Bloody Mary in a cosy Badedas-drenched bath.

It also helps if, as does Sara, the recipient looks a sprightly 25, behaves half that age, and has a star-struck chappie in tow oblivious to *how* many candles sputter on the gâteau.

Most of the embittered crones *I* help across the big three-oh threshold have had all humor squeezed from them by constant dumpings or the screams of toy boys as they flee the haggard spectacle. For such crypt-keepers, Ms Tilsner's ace volume will only tip them sooner into the pit of has-been misery and despair.

A splendid oeuvre that I must stock up on, not just for future 30th birthday babes but as the perfect goading gift for mummified creatures already past it.

What this book isn't: 1) something you would take seriously. 2) something to consult if you are a selfhelp fan. 3) something you won't get if you never moved out of your parents' house.

Turning 30 for me was a breeze; it was 31 that freaked me out. As a chronic bargainer (Chapter 3), experiencing the joys of our current economy (Chapter 7), I personally enjoyed this book. I think it's wry, witty, has a touch of Ab-Fab to it, and made me want to have a drink and read it in the tub.

If you are closer in your level of seriousness to some of the reviewers here, don't buy this book. Otherwise, kick back and enjoy the read!

1 out of 5 stars Funny but unreal.......2003-07-01

I understand that it is a book of humor. But first, this book assumes that the mayority of women turning 30 is single. Second, it also assumes that if you have a stablished career and a confortable financial position achieved by hard work before turning 30, something's wrong with you.
I agree with some reviewers that the targeted readers are teenagers or those who have not passed yet their teen's years.
Please do not take this book seriously.
Even though it's funny there are much better funny things to do with your time.

                  1 out of 5 stars Amateur writing.......2003-02-03

My suggestion to other readers is - do not waste your time or money on this book! When the big 30 began to approach I ordered the book from Amazon. I couldn't wait to tear into it. Unfortunately, I was very, very disappointed. The best part of this book is the cover, and that's no lie. I ordered this book thinking I would get good information and it would be funny. Instead all I learned was that you can string together pages and pages of drivel. With the constant hysteria about turning 30 in this book, it will make you have a mental breakdown. The book feeds into this false culture of fear. Also, the book reads like a college term paper - a bad college term paper.

1 out of 5 stars DULL, TRITE, AND NOT FUNNY.......2002-12-16

I thought this was going to be a funny book but it was very stupid and neurotic. I seriously don't know this book's target audience - maybe junior high school girls (naw, they're too cool for this ...).

                  Book Description

Similar to becoming "sweet sixteen," turning 30 is often seen as a pivotal birthday. Twenty-one-year-olds are "legal" adults, while becoming 30 places you at the next stage of womanhood. No longer a twenty-something seeking the pleasures and benefits of the adult world, the thirty-something woman is establishing herself in her profession, working towards financial independence, often married, possibly considering motherhood, if not there already. Her focus shifts to the bigger issues of partnering, parenting, fulfillment, balance and spirituality, to name a few. She wants to be a self-aware woman of depth and substance.

For this becoming-wise younger woman, this lovely journal offers words of wisdom from women who have already experienced many of life's challenges and can now reflect upon their meaning for women of all generations. Wise Women Speak is a beautifully illustrated collection of women's wisdom meant to challenge and reassure an emerging woman and give her room to reflect her own wise words. It is a thoughtful and interactive gift book, sure to become a treasured heirloom.

                  1 out of 5 stars Astounded.......2004-10-30

I'm astounded to see several good reviews of this book on amazon.com. From my perspective, it is a waste of money. There is very little text; most pages contain a sentence or possibly two, and every dozen pages or so, you will find two facing pages with no text whatsoever. The creators of this volume try to pass this off as space in which to write down your own wisdom, but if you want blank pages to write in, buy a notebook at the drugstore for 75 cents!

The "wisdom" contained in this slim volume is dispensed in the form of banalities ("Always tell the truth"; "Have faith"; "Give more than you take") attributed to supposed women with names like "Mary M", "Jean A", and "Peggy S" (I particularly grew to hate Peggy).

I did find the little watercolor illustrations of bunnies and flowers charming. Until I started noticing them repeating! Someone should clue the illustrator in to the fact that one usually does not recycle illustrations over and over in the same book.

I can't believe trees had to die for this. I can't believe I have to give this an entire star in order to post a review. Two thumbs down. Actually, I really need to grow more thumbs so I can point even more of them down.

                  5 out of 5 stars DELIGHTFUL, UPLIFTING,.......2002-08-30

Great job, what a delightful, wonderful book. I ordered one for myself, and now I am going to buy the book for my daughters and my grand daughters. I will enter my thoughts on the pages for each of my girls, an give them as Christmas gifts. I will keep my grand daughters books for a while and write wonderful things about life for them and give to each of them as they mature.
There is alot to absorb in this adorable book, each page can be put to everyday use.

5 out of 5 stars These Wise Women Speak to Women of All Ages.......2002-08-22

I know that the title of this book implies that it is only meant for women turning 30. My mom got me this book as a gift and I found it to be very uplifting and helpful, even as a 16 year old. I think that the same advice applies to all women who are reaching turning points in their lives, young and old, and I stronly recommend this book to anyone. I know that more books are coming out in the series too, so keep a lookout!

Although the title indicates that the book contains advice for the woman entering her fourth decade of life, actually the wise women quoted therein speak to women of all ages.

The perfect gift, extremely reader-friendly with beautiful illustrations, full of witty aphorisms from worldly-wise, everyday women, the book will be a great addition to any woman's library shelf.

                  Book Description

This inspiring book is the next best thing to having a long, deep conversation about life with your closest women friends. On Women Turning 30 celebrates the complexities, challenges, and choices of this dynamic decade in a personal and joyful way. Through the experiences and insights of 15 strong, creative, 30-something women, readers gain insights on relationships, careers, passion, love, spiritual awareness, self-esteem, success, body image, eating disorders, sexuality, motherhood, mentors, feminism, aging, living deliberately, making a difference, finding meaning, and much more.

They are famous and not so famous, traditional and unconventional, single and partnered women sharing their joys, pains, turning points, choices, triumphs, and creative struggles. They talk about the need to overcome the cultural myth that women can have it all-marriage, career, children, social life-and to focus on "what it is you do well, what it is you love, and what it is you want to concentrate on."

Here's a smattering of their sage, practical advice:

"Go be by yourself for awhile. Have an adventure. Fall in love with your soul. Talk to God. Laugh a lot."
                  —Susana Herrera, writer

"Instead of asking, 'What is the answer?' ask, 'Why or how can this be meaningful?'"
                  —Katherine Spilde, anthropologist

"Look in the mirror and say, 'I really love this woman that I'm looking at. Look how beautiful she is. Look at what a wonderful person she is.'"
—Terry Schneider, athlete and personal trainer

"Surround yourself with people who say 'yes' or 'why not?' to your deepest dreams."
—Randi Gray Kristensen, professor and scholar

They reveal the powerfully healing ways they nurture themselves, find support for their work, and drum up the courage to live their ideals. Their energy, wisdom, and clear focus offer encouragement for every woman to pursue her dreams.

[headline]An intimate exploration of the passions, struggles, and dreams of 30-something women

This remarkable book offers revealing glimpses into the lives of 15 spirited women. From artists and writers to educators and scientists, each one candidly shares the choices she has made and the meaning she has found in this complex and exhilarating time of life.
Women in their thirties face a myriad of weighty decisions about career, home, love, marriage, and babies, all compounded by cultural expectations of how women are "supposed" to be. Yet, as these personal stories so eloquently reveal, this is a time in which women can discover their true calling as they learn to trust their intuition, make peace with their past, and actualize their dreams in increasingly meaningful ways. The richly diverse perspectives offered here will inspire every woman in her thirties to claim her gifts, draw from her strengths, and direct her creative energy toward her deepest passions.

"Cathleen Rountree has done it again! Now added to her series of remarkable books on the various decades of a woman's life is On Women Turning 30. This is a must-read for every woman in her thirties as well as for those-men and women-who wish to learn about the weighty decisions and cultural expectations that accompany this dynamic and getting-younger-all-the-time age. Remember when 30 was the beginning of the end for women? Now it's the beginning of the beginning."
                  —Liz Smith, columnist, Newsday

"Cathleen Rountree's marvelous series on the decades of a woman's life give us all a peek at our future and our past. For me, the thirties seem like only yesterday; for those going into their thirties today, these are the decisive years-marriage, babies, and career. These are the paths that color your lifetime. For the young women of the twenty-first century I can only give one piece of advice: Be decisive-no one has as much time as they think. It's so refreshing to know that I'm not alone. I'm 31 and have just recently started to explore my creativity. Turning thirty has opened me up. That's the theme that runs through this wonderful book....being open to whatever life brings. Hearing how the featured women are dealing with some of the same issues confronting me helped me to take a skip back to look at the big picture.

When you curl up with this book, you feel like you're with a thoughtful group of friends. I loved it!
