Book Description
Ever since the "fall of the Wall," Berlin has witnessed an unprecedented surge in new and re-construction, particularly in the area around Potsdam and Paris Squares, where the Wall cut an enormous swath through the city's center. Striking multi-billion dollar complexes built by corporations such as Sony and Daimler have helped revitalize Berlin, bringing it architecturally in step with the rest of the world. But alongside these monuments to capitalism are equally exciting developments in the city's residential architecture. This book looks at a number of extraordinary living spaces designed by leading architects, featuring beautifully produced color photographs, floor plans, descriptive texts, and biographies of the designers. From new private houses that are as complex as they are luxurious, to the widely lauded and wildly creative regentrification of the drab, concrete blocks that once symbolized the stagnation of the GDR era, these private spaces reveal the insurgence of youthful energy, ideas, and optimism that make Berlin one of the most exciting places to live in today's world, and offer a wealth of ideas and inspiration for anyone looking to build, or rebuild, a remarkable home.
Customer Reviews:
an interesting, yet occasionally eclectic selection.......2002-10-29
i picked this book up today and have already worked my way through it the first time. written up in english, german, french and spanish, the words are few, and the pictures relatively many. thick and pocket-sized, it offers an interesting cross-section of some higher-end apartments in berlin. i found it more to my taste on a quick peruse than other books in the series, but to be honest, i will likely end up with them all, starting with "tokyo apartments" tomorrow. of course, in books such as this, one can never end up liking all the selections, yet i find that even with the apartments whose owners' taste i don't share, i appreciate seeing what they have done. i am a minimalist, if i had to choose my closest to favorite style, and many apartments in this book offer good ideas and insight about how to extract the most from an occasionally compact or challenging layout. recommended.

Book Description

Customer Reviews:
yes, do get this.......2006-06-11
Ignore this book at your peril.
TAOS by David Seabury may be the greatest pop psych/ self imp. book ever written.
Read it along with Bertand Russell's 'Conquest of Happiness.'(I dont agree with all of Russell's ideas, yet the golden ones along the way make it worth the read.)
Even if you aren't literary, get a copy of William Carlos Williams' 'Paterson' to keep on your shelf til you can warm up to it.
Marjorie Greenbie is good too ('The Arts of Liesure,' harcover) and she is sane, yet humorous/ lighthearted. She hits very few bad notes. Another of the best pop psych books.
I have to have something to give........2005-11-21
My Mother and Father said it the wrong way. They told me to share and not be selfish.
What they should have said is share don't be greedy. Because of the way it was put I have had a negative outlook at the word selfish.
It made my life hard to fulfill, and being raised as a Catholic it was compounded even more. The Catholic Church pushes its impression of the Bible, and is always telling us to give more then we do, to dig deep and give more.
I met a woman in my church; her husband is in the Army Reserves and is serving over seas. She has a small child and is living in a place with holes in the walls and not sure where her next meal is coming from. She gives more then she can afford each week for collection, keeps enough money to light a candle some times. She needs to just keep all the money and take care of her family and herself first. I believe God does not care how much you sacrifice, but how much you believe in him. Self sacrifice is to me a lot like suicide and that is one thing that will definitely keep you out of his grace.
This book helped me to look at the some of the stories that made me think I was selfish, and see them in another light. For example the last days of Christ, after the last supper he went in to the woods and prayed to his Father to give him strength to do what he had to do, instead of what the Apostles wanted of him, spend his last hours with them, By doing what he wanted, and not what they wanted, this gave him the strength to fulfill his destiny. He then gave to us so much more then could have ever been thought of.
People would describe me as the kind of person that would give the shirt off my back for someone I don't even know. This book has shown me this is self destructive and hurts me and the ones I care the most about. I found out taking the shirt off my own back would only weaken me. I should just go get a shirt out of the closet, give it to them, one I don't need, not the one I was wearing. When I take the shirt off my own back, I could get cold and can get sick, then the ones I care about have to give of themselves to help me get better, and the one I gave the shirt to now needs a coat. It is good for me to give but not when it hurts me or the ones I care about.
I have found myself in the past in a relationship for 18 years that was destructive to me, because it was with a taker, and she was greedy and kept taking and only gave back the least amount as possible just to keep me around so I would keep giving to her. Looking back, most of the things she gave me she did not give me at all, she just let me get it myself.
An old saying is when you smile the whole world smiles with you, what a wonderful gift, a smile. This book has helped me to see something, the only way to smile is from the inside out; the only to do that is to remember I am the most important person on this earth. If I want to give to the ones I love I have to have something to give.
I hope you will get out of this book as I did. If so and it helps you to start being happy, then when you are done give it to someone you care about we all know someone like me and hope they can start being happy inside of themselves, by keeping what they deserve, not giving it all away.
I have learned it is not all about just giving, but sharing, sharing is taking too. I had a relationship with a giver, a wonderful person; I believe I messed some things up by not knowing how to receive, except gifts, take.
So for me I believe life is give and take, balance. I am going try taking, as well as giving, but keep enough for myself, hope I never get greedy, and to keep the takers out of my life, I want to be happy too.
Profound! .......2005-06-17
Profound! A pearl of wisdom outlining strategies for managing external negative influence. It provides a strategy for improving your life through a knowledge of self.
The Art of Selfishness.......2004-07-13
This book has sat on my Dad's bedside table for many years. I can always remember seeing it. My Dad is now 77 years old. It travelled with him from the UK to Jamaica, where he and my mum has returned home and retired. He kept money, reciepts, papers etc in this book. I was visiting my parents over the weekend and wanted something to read, I asked him if I could read it. I have read Susan Jeffers and Iyanla Vanzant and many others, but this book is brilliant. As old has it is it, it has not dated in my opinion. The concerns that one had when this book was written has not dated. I said to my Dad I could not have read and understood this book if I did not have some life experiences of my own. It is a very deep and profound book
How the Art of Selfishness changed my life choices.......2002-06-09
My husband and I both read this book in the 1960s. We lent it out and it was never returned. Obviously we didn't learn everything from this book, but it definitely changed our attitudes in interacting with family and friends. We have had a good life, making ever good decisions for ourselves and family. We feel our happiness is due in large part to the guidelines we learned from this book. In fact, spending time renewing ourselves has added to our interaction with our both young and now grown children. We hope we have been able to pass along these values to them.
Book Description
Jenna Rose Brinley has the voice of a star--and the looks to go with it. At fourteen, she has the poise of a professional, and Parker Blevins and his friends know that she's just what they need to vault their talented garage band to the next level. But when it becomes apparent that Jenna has a pop star attitude to go with her talent, the band has to ask--can she really lead a group devoted to singing about God when she seems only devoted to herself? On Tour: The Perfect Girl draws readers into the lives of a group of young musicians on the rise, as they struggle to love the girl who has it all and keep their music true to the Father above.
Customer Reviews:
Great Gift for Teenage Girls.......2005-01-02
As a 50+ adult, I still enjoy reading good fiction written for children and teenagers. And after reading this book, I quickly ordered it and the next one in the series for my two teenage nieces. The books in the On Tour series are wholesome and enjoyable reading and will hold a teenager's attention. Although they are aimed primarily at readers in their early teens, I highly recommend them as gifts for any teenage girl (and for any grown girl that still enjoys teen fiction).
Awesome.......2004-08-09
I read this book, and I thought, I have to read the next one! I read the second book too, The Back-up Singer, and I can't wait to get the others! These books are amazing! I can really relate being a teen with a band! I would really reccommend there books!
Great read!.......2004-05-22
The On Tour books are so cool. Jenna Rose finds herself completely out of her element when she moves. The kind of people she always hangs out with don't want anything to do with her and the ones who do are freaks! Parker, the hottie freak, thinks she's perfect for his band. If Jenna joins the band, will she lose her chance to get in with the people she wants?
It's not a new theme, but the twists to this one gives it a fresh spin and makes it one of my favorite books ever!
Great, great read.......2004-05-16
WARNING: THIS BOOK IS ADDICTIVE!
Me and my friends all found that starting this book is addictive. You start reading and you can't put it down for anything. You can spend an entire day without even realizing it.
Jenna Rose kinda flows through life, getting whatever she wants without much effort. Then she moves and is faced with who she really is! Can she let the people who want to get to know her see who she really is-- and then will they still want to be around her? Or should she compromise who she wants to be just to get in with the crowd that she wants to be in?
Awesome start to what's going to be a great series!
Too good to put down.......2004-03-21
What is 14-year-old Jenna Rose Brenley to do after moving to a new town and a new high school? With her father being the new pastor at a nearby church in Ohio, Jenna Rose is automatically given the title as `the perfect Christian girl,' when all she really wants is to be accepted as a normal teenage girl by the `in' crowd at Highland High. Moving into her new home, she is accompanied by a boy by the name of Parker Blevins who is helping the new family get settled in. She finds herself instantly attracted to the witty and very cute boy who is still a bit clueless of the flirting that is going on. Jenna finds herself going crazy trying to figure out why he hasn't made a move on her, or at least acknowledged that he is the least bit interested in her. After being invited to come with him to watch his band practice, she finds that his friends are well, different. Her struggle for popularity is getting harder by the day and Jenna finds herself willing to do anything to be accepted. After deciding to try out for the dance team, she meets Jamie Valentin, a jock, who is actually showing a lot of interest in her. Liking the attention, she begins flirting and making him struggle to just get her name. After a while it gets intense and she finds herself in an uncomfortable situation where she even a little scared. After pointing out her discomfort, Jamie agrees to leave her be but then threatens to do the unthinkable. Soon after that, rumors begin to spread and she is immediately made the laughing stock of the whole school. Though Parker's friend try to comfort her, she finds herself pushing them away because they are not exactly her type of friends, and she even finds herself taking her anger out on them. She is mad at God, her father, and even Parker and the rest of the group for absolutely no reason at all. After admitting her wrongs, accepting the group, and forgiving herself, she finds that she had had friends all along who had loved her and tried to make her feel welcome. She even finds herself wanting to grow into a stronger Christian and accepting the Lord as her savior.
This is a wonderfully written book that I didn't want to put down. I found myself picturing the details that I found on every page. As I neared the end of the book, I was mad that it had to ever end. I laughed, I cried, and I could relate to all the problems each teen in this story faced. I am looking forward to reading more of this series and more from this author. I recommend this book to any teen who has ever questioned their relationship with God.
