You'd never know you could do this much with landscaping.......2007-06-25
What beautiful and innovative designs this book has. My husband and I wanted to landscape much of our property with stone. We actually did more than planned because we were so impressed by much of the ideas in this book. A concern of ours was the price. Much of the simpler projects you find you can do yourself (such as the small retaining wall around the garden), which saved on additional labor costs. We were guided which stones to use, and stones that could be found around the property. For the work that was a bit more extensive we called in a professional and showed him from the book what we wanted. He was very much impressed with this book himself.

Beautiful book, well put together, LOTS of pictures. I especially liked the way the author covered different styles of stonework. I'm not a fan of very formal design and he included examples of more informal, earthy landscaping.

I love the full color pictures - it gave me all sorts of ideas. I just wished there were a few more pages on "How to do it" I'd recommend this book though for the price - it was awesome.

The final section of the book takes a more detailed look at a few of the most imaginative and evocative gardens in which stone takes center stage. A Good Start.......2006-12-25
Sunset does a good job here of providing basic information on using stones in landscaping, including a very nice part on pebble mosaics. This book is better than the Taunton book on the same topic. Taunton suffers from sloppy editing, e.g., too much duplication on garden paths, and insufficient explanation for the DIYer. The main criticism here that I have is 1) lack of modernism. There is almost no coverage for modernist applications of stonework in architectural landscaping. 2) An adversion to including significant "commercial" installations. For example, the garden at the Getty Center, or any similiar garden, could have been included for inspiration and ideas. Overall though, its worth the money, and better than the Tauton competition.

Usefull book to get ideas of stone landscaping.......2006-02-03
I'm glad I bought this book.
In the first part there are lot of pictures about stone use in the garden (stairs, patios, walls, paths...). For someone who needs the ideas or insight of stone landscaping possibilities I would recommend it. Of course the number of examples is limited with the number of pages, but it is in accordance with the price.
In the second part are how to instructions which are also OK. This kind of instructions can be found also in other books, so for me the reason for buying this book would be the first part.

This is a well designed, and obviously recently redone, book. The content is a "hot" subject in the landscaping industry particularly as stonework relates to low water/low maintenance outdoor spaces. Both the sculptural and "connection with nature" qualities of stonework are now in vogue as well. And people don't mind spending the money today to acquire the permancy, strength and beauty of good stonework. This book should get even the passive observer excited about the possiblities.
As a landscape designer, I'm constantly looking for good references and ideas that might not be common in my geographic area. This book does a very nice job of pictorally displaying dozens of stone-based designs and settings from all over the country (and possibly some internationally). The editorial content and organization of the chapters also contribute to the success of the book.
If you like to look at a lot of professionally shot pictures of professionally designed, stone-based landscaping (and get decent captioning for each picture) this book should more than satisfy you. The only issue I have is that the type was a bit small and therefor difficult to read. But for the price, this book was a really good investment. I only hope all of Sunset's books have been equally upgraded to more current designs in order to meet and exceed our expectations.

I loved looking at the pictures in this book and there was some information about types of rock which was interesting and well-wriiten. However, a lot of the book's ideas centered around rocks in combination with water features; very pretty but useless for those without water in their gardens. That also seemed a tad presumtuous considering the title. Maybe it should be called "Landscaping with plants ,stone and water features".

I realize that there are already several books about using stones in the garden and they all contain similar information, but this book is still worth a read if you plan to use stone in your garden. It is full of photographs that show ways to use rock in the garden. In fact, several of these photos are the inspiration for two new projects I started in my own garden.
The first section of this book discusses the history of stone in gardens and talks about the types of stone. I enjoyed reading the history, but quickly moved on to the meat of the book. The next chapter discussed pathways and included patterns, stone recommendations and how to's. I found this section particularly helpful, since I was in the process of laying a path when I started to read the book. Many of the tips are common sense after you complete projects, but who wants to find out how to do things the hard way? The following sections of the book deal with making steps, drainage problems, retaining walls, walls in general, stone in water gardens and rock gardens. All of the sections are well written and have many tips and instructions to help you complete your projects.
Something I really enjoyed about this book is the fact that each section had a list of plants that grow well in that environment. For example, there is a special section on plants for crevices and one on plants for steps. I also enjoyed reading some of the general information. There are sidebars such as "12 Ways to Move Stone" and "Cutting Stone" included in the book. If you've ever tried to move a large rock, you know how important it is to know how to move stones.
Even though there are several other good books on stonescaping, this book is well written, well organized, and will find a permanent home on my reference shelf.

Excellent but wrongly credited.......1999-08-19
I am very disappointed and angry that a book published in 1984 by Vincent T. Covello and Yuji Yoshimura as co authors should now, since Mr Yoshimura has died and cannot comment, is describing Mr Yoshimura as a mere contributor. We all know that the Yoshimura name sold the book!
This is the "bible" for this interesting Japanese art form........1998-06-26
You will never look at rocks the same after reading this book.
Mr. Yoshimura and Dr. Covello provide all the basics of viewing stone development, preparation and appreciation. All material is well-written and presented in an easy-to-understand method that makes one want to begin this art immediately.

This book of inspirational quips, sayings, and short essays was written specifically for the African American woman who is pregnant or who has children and may be having doubts or difficulties with her life and her responsibilities.. The author, a mother of ten children and a resident of Camden, New Jersey, lectures to various church, non-profit and business organizations on the themes of parenting, empowering black children, forgiveness, healing, growth, faith and spiritual nourishment. MotherLove is a very spiritual book which could be used as a daily inspirational guide. Each page contains a thought-provoking quote by such people as Maya Angelou, J. California Cooper, Toni Morrison, and Deepak Chopra. Biblical selections are also included. The author then directs the reader to a different thought for the day, a prayer, a poem, or a guide toward coping with the difficulties of parenthood. Non-African American women would also find comfort and joy in this most nourishing and spiritual book.
