Required reading for childbirth.......2007-04-13
My absolute favorite book. A must read for all women.
I'll give this book at every baby shower!
It wasn't what I was looking for.......2006-12-21
This book, about natural childbirth doesn't portray 100% positive experiences. The women's accounts are still filled with testimony of their doubts, fear, stress, pain, and often complications during childbirth. I bought this book hoping to prepare my own mental attitude for a more calm and comfortable 3rd natural childbirth. My first two births were already more calm and comfortable than most of the testimonies in this book so I found the stories frightful and reminding of the painful memories.
excellent book!.......2006-02-24
This book's stories are inspiring and very educational - if you are thinking about why you should try for a natural birth, these stories will help inspire you! Very easy read - stories are from real Moms and usually no more than a few pages at a time.
Excellent Read.......2005-08-27
Sheri Menelli has compiled a wonderful collection of natural birth stories in her book Journey Into Motherhood: Inspirational Stories of Natural Birth. Each story is written by a mother in her own voice and concludes with A Mother's Guidance and Additional Thoughts sections giving additional tips and advice to help you arm yourself with the support and guidance you need to have a natural birth.
Many stories are so touching they made me cry, but the practical tips and experiences of those that have gone before are priceless. Having a natural birth is not for everyone, but the fact that we hardly ever hear an inspiring natural birth story fills the whole process with fear for many first time mothers. If we can just trade that fear for education and preparedness I believe many more women would opt for a more natural birth experience. Menelli has provided women with a book that is both educational and inspirational. By reading these stories while preparing for birth, mothers can feel empowered by their decisions and know that others have gone before them and had a beautiful, natural birth.

Supportive -- Empowering -- a fun read.......2005-04-29
I actually got this book as a gift. I am just now expecting my first. I was already dedicated to the ideal of natural -- non-medical, non-intervention, non-medicated -- birth. So maybe this book was "preaching to the choir" BUT it is so positive and so encouraging.
There are birth stories in the book are not what I want, or will attempt (unassisted home birth and so on). BUT each story shoes a mom doing whatever she has to do in order to do what is best for her baby and her birth. It doesn't matter if you deliver in a hospital or at home alone -- what matters is that YOU make an educated choice based on what you believe and what is best for your situation.
And this is what this book shows us - you can choose, and that you can make anything ok. It opens our eyes to the fact that there is more than one way to birth.
More importantly it shows us positive birth. I am pregnant and everyone has a horror story; a trauma. It is refreshing and reassuring to read positive stories. Yes there are challenges, no nothing goes according to plan - but it is a miracle of birth and a joy to experience. I consider the opportunity to birth this child a blessing and the child a gift - who what's a ugly Christmas morning they'd sooner forget? Make your birth worth remembering.

Outstanding book for mothers and grandmothers. Makes a beautiful gift!.......2006-02-07
I have four daughters and this book has been on my bedside table since it was given to me by a friend. The book is not only beautiful, but the writing is heartwarming and interesting too. This is not your average "motherhood is wonderful - read my story" book. This collection is full of stories, peoms, photos, art, information about other cultures, and wisdom. I have loved it and given it many times as a gift to new mothers, old mothers, and many of my kid's teachers!
wonderful resource for new moms and old moms alike.......2000-09-10

This book is a rare gem. It compiles many famous writers' comments concerning pregnancy and birth. It portrays pregnancy and birth as beautiful and spiritual.
It also includes different spiritual perscpectives on the different phases of pregnancy and birth. It incudes Native American, Celtic, Polynesian,...poems that describe pregancy and birth.
I used this book to find a poem for my sons birth announcement.

Along with her already inspirational and spiritual self, she will surely treasure this book, it is so Amy!! When I saw the Zuni prayers and poems I was even more excited as this is where she and my son are living!

This book digs deep--are you ready?.......1999-01-20
Billie Delawie's prose is so vivid you'll be right there in the room with the main character and her children as she struggles her way to better understand the individualistic path she's chosen--so be warned! It's strong stuff, set a couple of decades ago, when women had to fight hard for every inch of alternative choice they gained. Personally, it helped me gain a much better understanding of my own mother, and that was a complete surprise. I suspect the book was written to help women come to terms with their need for self-expression and independence--and I, too, am such a woman. But it really astonished me with the power of these family scenes. I found some offensive; others stirred up old anger and other emotions. Still, I picked it up one morning and couldn't put it down until 6 hours later!
I'd love to see more books from this author. Where is she now? What has she learned? Surely it must be somewhere completely ALIVE! Did she and her children survive their quest beyond the book's time frame? Has she new wisdom to share for this decade? The book would make a great gift for women you know who fought their way to liberation through the 1940s, 1950s, 60s, 70s, 80s . . .
Healing, supportive, fun, engaging, meaningful, and useful........1998-12-08
Home is Where You Are opened my eyes to the reality of being a stepmom. I am stepping into this role and felt totally unequipped to do so. I had expectations of needing to be perfect, to have the answers, and to be the Fairy Stepmother. After reading this book, I am confident that I will have bumps in the road to being a stepmom, that makes a difference, AND that is it ok to be myself sharing from my heart whatever the feelings. I feel prepared to assist the kids, my finance and his exwife all to be real and genuine so WE can find a way to make this work for all of us. I also gained an appreciation for what the exwife is experiencing in this sharing of children we are going going through. Billie's book was fun to read, engaging, REAL, and thought provoking. My finace read it and it has helped him to see what I and his exwife are dealing with. He is also more open about his feelings of being a parent and more tender with my fears and expectations of being the "wicked stepmom". This book has been healing and has helped me to prepare to be a part of the parenting team of two beautiful kids coming from my heart and not my fears.
Conscious healing and growth can begin at any time or age........1998-11-07
I believe that every mother's dream is to allow herself and her children to grow, openly and honestly, in their relationship. That, in my experience and the experiences of so many mothers that I've known, has not been the case. The next best "dream" is to have the creative ability to go back and recount - openly and honestly - the drama of our lives together. To truly see through life's daily traumas, to reflect on the good and the bad, and discover the healing that took place, albeit unbeknownst to our conscious selves at the time. Billie has done this. Not only for herself and children, but for anyone who reads her book. I found myself sharing her anguish, jealousy, doubts and fears. I sensed her deep love and her committment to the healing - of herself and her children - that is so essential to growth. Her words gently compelled me to reach back in time to my own childhood, my relationship with my mother, and to motherhood and how I relate to my children. As parents now, my children will surely benefit from reading this book, allowing them to reach back in time to better understand themselves and their mother. Billie offers reassurance that healing can begin at any time; that honesty, love, committment, and even pain and sorrow are key ingredients for cultivating self-worth and acceptance of one another as individuals.

Breathtaking collection of writing AND artwork!.......2001-09-27
The deep feelings and powerful insights shared by the poets in this unique anthology touch me on a level that no other poetry book can! I often find myself crying and laughing with the talented women who shared so much from deep within. Edwina Peterson Cross and Barbara Crooker are two of my favorite poets who write so eloquently in this unique book! I am also in awe of the variety of exquisite artwork that accompanies the poems. Lynn Van Couvering and Kathy Strahota are two of my favorite artists who have work published in this anthology. This treasured collection is one of my favorites when it comes time for gift-giving!

This anthology is so beautifully written as well as illustrated. It truly takes one on a "Journey of Love". Every reader can walk in the shoes of the expecting mother, nursing mother, sleep-deprived parent, parent of toddlers, and mother who is learning to "let go". There is so much wisdom expressed so intimately. This is the perfect book for every mom to have on hand for those special quiet moments of reflection. It is also a terrific source of shared comfort in the universal thoughts of motherhood.
Book Description
An exploration of a son's relationship with his mother.
Returning Frankie's Rocks is a fascinating story of a son's relationship with his mother and an intriguing insight in the world of compulsive collecting. Dana Hornig tells the story of how he found his mother's clandestine rock collection after she passed away. His mother, Frankie, had always been a compulsive collector, but this collection was different.
Each rock was carefully labeled with things like Stonehenge, Glastonbury Abbey, Tintagel Castle. When Horning realized that his mother had stolen these rocks from historic sites he found himself with a lot questions, and was reminded just how little he knew about Frankie. To find answers he embarked on a journey to England and Scotland to return the rocks and, in doing so, discovered quite a bit about his mother, and ultimately was able to come to terms with her emotional distance and their strained relationship.

Compulsion And Healing.......2005-11-15
When I started reading this book, I had little or no sympathy with Dana Lustig, and his decision to return all the little rocks his late mother had collected from Britain's ancient landmarks seemed inane.
Although Lustig makes interesting connections between his mother's private, secret pathology and the collecting obsession that affects nearly one out of every three of us Americans, it is still something of a shock to see a son washing his mother's dirty linen in public.
I guess if she didn't want the world to know about her mania for British rocks she would have destroyed her collection, or (for we collectors hate to throw anything away) she might have been more upfront, asked her son never to expose her peccadillos to the world. She wasn't the world's best mother, by Dana's account, so maybe a bit of filial resentment motivated his memoir, which takes the familiar "creative non-fiction" format of ANGELA'S ASHES and turns it into a travelogue in which we see the now middle aged Dana trotting back to England and trying to alert officials and the media in each town that he has landed and that long ago his mother had done a bad thing and tried to steal their history.
Some of the officials are sympathetic to his quest, others treat him like he's some kind of shady character. British wit and understatement are in short supply nowadays, or so it seems from Lustig's colorless interactions with these bureaucrats and tabloid hacks.
How I wish this book had an accompanying CD in which we could hear the revealing radio interview his mother gave, long ago, in which Dana finds her voice still speaking to him from beyond the grave. He parses her syntax to little bits, isolating the words in which she condemns herself, and shows them to us as proof of his thesis.
This book deserves more attention. It is ultimately a warm, healing portrait of a man who, while attempting to right family wrongs, comes to understand his beloved "Frankie" wasn't as awful as all that.

Book Description
Labelled a 'splendid little war' by Senator John Hay, the Spanish American War was a peculiar event in America's history, provoked as much by the press as by political pressures. Here, aided by superbly detailed maps and artwork, the author deals with the clashes at Las Guasimas and El Caney, the capture of San Juan Hill, and the naval battle and siege of Santiago. The war was to mark the end of Spanish sovereignty in her 'New World', and the establishment of the United States of America as a world power.
