5 out of 5 stars Neat Source to have..........2007-06-06

I really like the 'down-to-earth' suggestions/comments. Enjoyable reading even quite humorous!

Lots of Recipes/Remedies using fairly common household items which are easily accesible & inexpensive. Instead of reading several products in the aisles, make your own right at home!! Things you use regularly may benefit your plants (EX: fling that banana peel in your rose bed - they'll thrive!)

Discusses many things from growing/caring for/etc Trees/Shrubs/Flowers to warding off unwanted 'pests' etc.

Good book to have. I'll be pulling it off the shelf often!

Boy, do I LOVE this book! I'm just a casual gardener, but boy, if you have nasty soil, need help getting your lawn started, garden started, problem with trees and plants, grab this book. I can tell you for a fact that that tonic Jerry has in this book for trees is just tremendous! Who would think that putting whiskey, beer, peroxide and jello on your trees would just make them grow huge in no time at all. My trees just love this stuff and I'm just thrilled with the results of all the recipes I've tried in this book. Plus, if you have problems with any plants you currently have, it's probably addressed in this book. Baker is the country's #1 gardener and this book shows why. I'm very thankful that I purchased it and got it for a great price on amazon.com. If you have roses and have trouble, this book is for you. He even tells you how to get rid of every bug imaginable. Also, if you're having trouble with your lawn, the remedy is in this book. Plus, Baker tells you how to select the proper plants for your area, and even outlines designs for you to have a nicely planted yard. He recommends what trees to plant as well and how they should be planted to take root quickly. He gives recipes for many tonics to get them off to a great start. Again, I can't emphasize how much this book has done for my garden. Now I'm attacking my clay soil and following Baker's advice. My yard is the best in the neighborhood!

3 out of 5 stars Overload.......2004-06-15

I just finished reading this book and, while it contains some good advice, I'll probably wait until I retire to use most of it. This is definitely for a hard core gardener, not a casual gardener like myself. There are so many different plant "tonic" recipes, it's hard to know which ones to use. If I followed all the advice found in this book, I'd never get anything else done.

Book Description

Why do gardeners start plants from seed instead of just buying a flat of seedlings from their local nursery? Necessity. Seedlings of unusual or exotic plants simply aren't available at garden stores, but they are available in seed. Then there's the cost factor. A few packets of seeds are much cheaper than dozens upon dozens of seedlings. And finally there's the plants' health to consider. Plants grown from seed get a healthy start that can almost guarantee you a magnificent display in your garden. The Gardener's A-Z Guide to Growing Flowers from Seed to Bloom will teach you everything you need to know to germinate and grow more than 500 types of flowering plants. For every plant listed you'll find precise information on whether it will do well in your part of the country; how to sow seeds indoors and outdoors; when to transplant indoor seedlings out in the garden; what light, soil, and spacing requirements are necessary; general plant care; when you can expect the plants to flower; how to encourage more blooms; and how to propagate your plants by cutting, division, layering, or detaching runners.

The book also features more than 500 full-color flower photographs. A quick-reference chart outlines bloom time, color, height, and site requirements for more than 1,000 species, making this book an indispensable reference for planning and planting fabulous gardens.

5 out of 5 stars starting flowers.......2007-08-07

I used this book extensivly this spring for starting all my flowers and veggie. I found it easy to use and most flowers etc were listed. Great book for my library and I will use it in the future for sure.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-02-26

This book is an excellent reference book describing seeds.
Giving the botanical name and common name. Most helpful with information on germination and were the seeds will grow best. And the the section that has thumbnail pictures
is excellent. The ease of using the paperback is all so great.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-01-04

Bought this for my wife and she loves it! She was reading this book like a novel. Provides good information and tips on a wide range of flowers. Bought this book due to good reviews as well!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book, but NOTE..........2006-04-07

This book is exactly what I was looking for-- a no-nonsense, complete description of how to start each of the many kinds of seeds that I can never resist buy, collecting, or trading for.

One thing that people should note, though: the plants are listed in alphabetical order by their Latin names. There is an appendix that has the common names and what the Latin name is for each, but I can't imagine doing that for every single plant-- what a pain! I like to know both Latin and common names, so I was fine with this system. But for someone who's only familiar with the common names of plants, this book is going to be a lot harder to use. (On the bright side, learning the Latin names can be a lot of fun, so if you're at all open to the idea, go for it!)

5 out of 5 stars Really and truly useful.......2004-08-10

When a friend recently asked me to suggest a book that would tell her the soil preferences of different flowers, I knew exactly what she needed. The Gardener's A-Z Guide to Growing Flowers from Seed to Bloom has all the answers. In addition to concise profiles of 500 bloomers, there's a handy gallery of color photographs and my favorite section, a 50-page chart that lists major and minor species along with their bloom times, colors, and cultural requirements. This book is designed to be useful, and it is!

Book Description

In association with Jackson & Perkins, Rose Companions is the first book devoted expressly to the exciting variety of plants that can be grown with roses in the garden. No longer must roses be considered appropriate only for the rose garden. Instead, today's roses offer an impressive array of characteristics that make them ideal plants for many landscape uses, including form, color, and fragrance. And the number of plants that make perfect partners for roses is astounding, including:

Rose Companions will give gardeners of all levels the information they need to create a beautiful landscape, whether they already have an established garden and want to add roses and other plants to it, or if they are growing roses and want to enhance them with companion plants, or if they are starting from scratch and have always dreamed of a garden lush with flowers-including roses.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for the Rose Gardener's Library.......2005-12-09

The author's rose experience gives the knowledgeable rosarian broader understanding and the novice rich new territory to discover. Roses become assets for gardens rather than specimens separated from the whole. If I had this book when I first began my rose adventures it would have been a constant source of help and inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars good guide to integrating roses.......2005-07-01

This is an excellent guide to integrating roses into a garden with other plants instead of keeping them in a separate location in a bare, mulched rose bed. Well written text and good pictures.

Shame on the publisher, though, for such poor copyediting! Next time pay a good copyeditor or proofreader and spare yourself the embarrassment of roses "baring their hips" (bearing, perhaps?) and "while your nose is ravaging the blooms" (really? RAVAGING?) and miscellaneous omitted words.

Book Description

Take a few chapters from a John le Carré spy thriller, add a hefty dose of exotic travelogue, blend with one of the best books on bulb growing ever written, and you've got Buried Treasures. Since launching his first international mail-order catalog in 1991, Latvian nurseryman Janis Ruksans has rapidly gained a reputation as one of the world's foremost experts on rare and unusual bulbs: Juno irises striped like exotic birds; gem-like corydalis; dusky, brooding fritillaries. For decades, Ruksans has been scouring remote and dangerous regions of Europe and Asia to bring back seed of the botanical treasures that he offers through his nursery, often contending with corrupt government agents, armed rebels, drunken drivers, and even (before the fall of the Soviet Union) the KGB. Once you read Ruksans' accounts of his extensive travels, you'll never look at a flowering bulb in the same way again. A crocus will take you to the shores of Lake Abant in northwestern Turkey, a tulip to the mountains of Chimgan in Uzbekistan.

Although adventure abounds in Buried Treasures, there's a great deal more for the gardener seeking trustworthy information. As well as being a renowned collector, Ruksans is a grower and propagator of bulbs second to none, and he generously shares his professional knowledge about the care and cultivation of every major and minor genus of bulb-forming plant. As richly diverse as the plants it describes, Buried Treasures will open your eyes to the beauty and fascination of the world of bulbs.

4 out of 5 stars Very nice and unusual book.......2007-08-31

This is a book evry bulbs grower must have ! Lot of nice pictures of plants, mostly in the wild, and informations or culture and bulbs hunting.
specialized in the central europe and middle orient areas.
I'm french, and it's very easy and pleasant to read.
Really a lot of informations.

5 out of 5 stars Great Bulb Book!.......2007-07-29

As quoted by Chris Brickwell in the forward, "There is much in this book to inform, entertain, and tantalize gardeners whether or not they have a specific interest in bulbs".

Buried Treasures is a unique and very different bulb book; and the best bulb book seen in many years. What makes this book different from all others encountered is the exhaustive amount of research Janis has contributed to the actual location in which these bulbs are found growing in the wild; and then transferring this knowledge into practical garden settings. This includes detailed descriptions of elevation, climate, drainage, and soil structure. This is what is so lacking in many other bulb books that simply march through the species with either superficial descriptions or highly technical DNA counts and other technical information that does not help the average grower.

The book is basically divided into two sections--Bulbs in the Garden and Bulbs in the Wild. In the first section is some of the best information about growing bulbs from seed that is currently available. Janis also includes a lot of other propagation instructions, which have been adopted by growers in Holland, and is also very easy for the average grower to understand. A lot of practical and easy to understand advice about planting bulbs, harvesting bulbs, viral diseases, fertilizing, watering, pollination, and seed harvesting is also included.

In the second part of the book Janis describes his many adventures as a bulb explorer--and these are his treasures! Janis explored and researched in a time that will never be replicated and the stories he tells are simply remarkable. They show his enthusiasm, which as all bulb lovers know is a borderline obsession, on finding and introducing new species. What is particularly intriguing about this second section is his travels and excursions and the subsequent discoveries are all keyed to the spectacular photos of the species found and described with fantastic detail. This is what is so lacking in bulb books today.

Janis Ruksans is a world treasure himself for the collecting, exploring, growing, propagating, hybridizing, researching, and introductions he has contributed to the world of bulbs. Let's all hope Janis Ruksans has more buried treasures of books inside him!

5 out of 5 stars great.......2007-07-14

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars quite interesting.......2007-02-20

I would recommnend this title, there are a lot of pictures, and therefore a bit less written information, but on the whole I think this book is worth buying.

4 out of 5 stars Very good.......2003-07-28

This book is a very good resource for everybody who wants to get informed about lilies in general. It's biggest advantage is it's very accessible language, even beginners won't have a problem to understand. It covers all important topics and is richly illustrated, though it sometimes suffers a bit of the "coffee-tablebook-syndrome".

It is a perfect work for beginners and advanced hobbyists who want to be well informed, but don't intend to use much too advanced techniques. For those it is quite usable and a very valuable source of information. Only experienced collectors and professionals might sometimes feel a bit unsatisfied.

I've read Munson's and Hill's books on daylilies and they are better for cultivating daylilies or provide a more in depth study. Grenfell's book is informative but not sufficiently detailed if the reader wants to cross cultivate or try to developing a cultivar. Better information is available on the internet websites.

      Book Description

At 12 months old, Benjamin was a normal baby. Betwen 12 to 18 months though--and possibly due to an adverse reaction from a vaccine--Benjamin's language and social skills detoriated rapidly and he began to turn inward. Up to this point, Benjamin's story follows the unfortunately familiar pattern of children who are diagnosed with autism. "Gift from My Son," however, is a story of autism unlike any other.

Avoiding the behavioral therapy approach that is so popular, Lindelien learned to meet Benjamin at his level, as an individual, and was rewarded with insights into the mind of an autistic child that include an altogether new theory about the role of left versus right brain dominance. She also reveals a number of natural medicine therapies that reversed many of Benjamin's worst symptoms.

4 out of 5 stars Spiritual journey through raising an autistic child.......2005-02-04

I was relieved to read Keli Lindelien's embrace of her autistic son's psychic abilities and her courageous spiritual journey through entering his world on his terms instead of the usual lamentation of the dreaded A diagnosis. This is not to say that parenting an autistic child isn't more difficult than raising a neuro-normal one. Take it from an autistic reviewer who shall continue to remain childless!

Lindelien's journey describes the transformative disruption of raising an autistic child. Parenting such a child upsets all icons of conventional success and easy creature comforts, every one of which she enjoyed until her son Benjamin started to develop autism--from the pleasant family life to the career satisfaction and fulfillment she was enjoying. Like any genuine cataclysm, Benjamin's autism forced a tectonic shift on everybody involved. Everyone in her family was forced to go deep inside themselves, look themselves and each other squarely in the eye (make non-autistic eye contact, as it were!), and be genuine with each other, rather than run for cover. Her story is one of blessing and synchronicity. This book is no sniveling war story about the tragedy of autism and a parent's alienation in a callous world.

The book unfolds from the author's psychic awakening to her psychic and then spiritual reawakening through learning to communicate with her non-verbal but incandescent son, Benjamin. She describes the regression of this heretofore normal baby after he was given the MMR shot. I have read about met all too many children who have regressed similarly after being given vaccines containing thimerosol.

She describes the treatments and methods that worked for her in nurturing and raising him, and those that didn't. She also describes how mother, father and daughter grew together in a new way to embrace the challenge of Benjamin's autism.

The congruence of psychic abilities, synchronicities and beneficial treatment modalities for Benjamin made a lot of sense to me. Benjamin is not the first autistic child I've heard of or known with psychic and healing abilities. I think that the author is right that autistic behavior is due to oversensitivity of one kind or another. On the other hand, though autists are almost invariably more sensitive and empathetic than we appear, not all are empaths in the way that Benjamin is. It is often difficult us to channel our untoward sensitivities in a creative and fulfilling way without the help of more pragmatically high-functioning people around us--usually family members or teachers. Lindelien's approach to this is inspired.

On the minus side, the book wore a little thin toward the end, where the author wafted off into philosophical speculations. Her family's and her own personal journey interested me the most.

At the end are some useful parenting tips and practical appendices, on toilet training and behavior charts. Even more of this kind of useful information might be helpful in the next edition.
