excellent.......2007-02-19
I teach classes in regular floral design and needed something to be a little different and this was it.
definitely not the best book on ikebana.......2004-02-22
The problem with this book is that most of the shown arrangements are plainly not beautiful. They don't look balanced as real ikebana should look, containers don't seem suitable for flowers, color combinations are not always harmonious, and in many cases it is not clear why this is called ikebana at all. There are some pieces of useful information such as diagrams, tools, and tips, but I don't think it reasonable to buy the book for those 10 pages (like I did).
There is a really great book on ikebana: "The art of arranging flowers; a complete guide to Japanese ikebana" by Shozo Sato, but it is out of print I am afraid. For examples of good ikebana look at these sites: http://www.nihonkoryu.org/, http://homepages.stmartin.edu/fac_staff/elias/index.htm, http://www.ikebanahq.org/
Decent how to, but lacks explanation of why.......2004-01-26
I got this book to go with Origami Flowers by Hiromi Hayashi. Reiko Takenaka does a good job explaining how to make an arrangement that looks like the pictures, with step by step instructions and clear diagrams. Some of the containers seem to clash with the flowers, and some of the special occasions arrangements are lost in translation for someone not intimately familiar with Japanese culture like me. My only real criticism, however, is that the book does not really explain any principles about why and how and what looks good - it's more a menu to find an arrangement that looks nice in the picture and repeat it.
great book for those who need English explanation of basics.......2001-12-29
This is a clearly written, well thought out explanation of the basics of Ikebana. The photographs demonstrating the combinations of materials, and their height relative to each other, are great as examples for beginners. Many ikebana teachers don't speak English well, so this book is useful for a cross reference for something you were taught in class. One problem - there are many schools of ikebana so the book has to be quite generic in its explanations, which is not necessarily how your particular school may approach a certain principle. But again, as a study supplement to a class, it works well.
Modern Ikebana.......2000-08-12
Many ikebana books shows a very traditional way of arranging flower. This book, however, shows a simpler and more modern way arrangement with the result of nice and unusual looks of flower arrangement. The step-by-step is helpful and quite detailed. The book shows lots of different variations for cool vases or containers as well.

Teaches Ikebana.......2007-01-14
Nice book, explains various techniques used in this flower arranging art.
I liked the techniques of creating decorations using more than one vaze side by side and the ways they are connected with flowers.
Keoko's Ikebana.......2007-01-10
This book is a pleasure to read and look at even if you don't do flower arranging. The illustrations are beautiful and the writing is clear and direct. I bought multiple copies and gave them to clients for holiday presents, and it was very well received.
Book Description
Ikebana is perhaps the most well-known and actively practiced of all Japan's traditional arts. Its origin dates back over six-centuries and it continues to be a vital art form today. There are numerous schools of ikebana, each with its own set of rules and techniques. One such school is the
Ichiyo School. Ichiyo, pronounce ee-chee-yo, meaning "one leaf" in Japanese, refers to the logo of the school. The School was founded in 1937 by a brother and sister, Meikof and Ichiyo Kasuya, who sought to create original ikebana that would be more suitable for modern lifestyles and environments.
Today the Ichiyo School instructs students worldwide and in 1996 the School founded centers for instruction both in Europe and the United States. They focus on two types of flower arrangement: one to fit diversified personal surroundings, from traditional Japanese tokonoma, or alcoves, to Western
entry tables, and another for public spaces, from stage settings to hotel lobbies.
Akihiro Kasuya is the third son of Meikof Kasuya and became the school's third Iemoto (Headmaster) in 1983. CREATING IKEBANA beautifully illustrates some of Kasuya's most extraordinary creations, such as large displays featuring the school's tradition of the flowing and crossing forms, the use of
color and emptiness, and the balance of asymmetry.
Beautifully illustrated and with an introductory overview by the author, CREATING IKEBANA is sure to interest anyone interested in the fine art of flower arrangement.

Blends theory and practise.......2003-06-01
What becomes abundantly clear as one reads through this bok is that H.E. Davey writes from experience. He has practised several of the "ways" to a very high level, and he is able to write about his experiences in a readable, almost conversational manner. He sees quite deeply into the heart of Japanese culture, taking the reader along a path of understanding and discovery as he presents the key concepts of that tradition. In addition to the text, the marginal reminders and definitions of the key concepts reinforce what one has already encountered in the text, and serve as a glossary of important terms. Davey provides exercizes to try at home, as well. All in all, this is a first-rate book -- helpful, accessible, accurate, and often profound.
Accessible Meditation.......2003-05-16
H.E. Davey excels at communicating an approach for the Westerner to Japanese concepts of universality, aesthetics, and human spirituality. Written in a very accessible form, this book is an excellent introduction to those topics for the beginner; as well as being a great reference book for those already practicing any form of meditation, martial art, or fine art. Full of concrete descriptions of ideas and relationships that often go mute in Western culture. Read it over and over!

Accessible and informative.......2003-02-25
Davey provides a clear and comprehensive overview of the principles and aesthetic qualities that characterize the Japanese arts. Ideal for Westerners interested in Japanese arts, particularly those who have practiced an art for some time and are looking to go beyond merely practicing the form and delve into the spiritual dimensions embodied in these arts. Highly recommended.
Awesome and Unique.......2003-02-13
This book is unique in that it gives Westerners a comprehensive insight into Japanese arts and ways. Not many are able to capture something so inangible as Japanese aesthics as well as Davey. A great read.
Book Description
Japanese masters have developed the techniques of ikebana over centuries and, while many different styles have evolved, they all share the same fundamental principles. The art embodies aesthetic considerations, knowledge of the natural forms of plants, and a profound understanding of the space around them. This book explains these principles by describing the lessons learned from master arranger Bokuyo Takeda and the underlying Zen symbolism in the art of ikebana. Readers will learn that training in ikebana is a process of achieving spiritual enlightenment and that the craft of arranging flowers is a form of meditation. These lessons provide a perfect escape from the stresses of everyday life and the incomparable satisfaction of creating beauty in the home.

Not what I expected.......2007-02-14
Although this book is not at all what I expected (it is what it says it is: "an account of the meaning and symbolism of Ikebana" which I somehow missed before I ordered the book), it is well written and offers excellent information. If you want a greater understanding of the art form, then this is an excellent book. If you're hoping for illustrations to go along with that understanding, then this is not it.

Book Description
This second volume of "moving meditations" shows how simple Japanese flower arranging (ikebana) techniques can be used to refresh the body and restore the spirit. Emphasizing that ikebana is first and foremost a "Way"--a spiritual and meditative art--the book offers solid grounding in Japanese aesthetics and philosophy, with references to Zen, tea ceremony, and other traditional Japanese arts. Line drawings and color photographs show step-by-step arrangements especially for beginners and casual practitioners.

The Japanese Way of the Flower.......2001-09-18
Flowers--not on, but as a spiritual path. This is the principle behind kado--widely known in the West as ikebana--the Japanese art of aesthetic flower arranging. The point is emphatically made that, as with other spiritual art forms, it is not the art itself that leads to awakening and profound realizations; rather, it is how we approach the practice that determines our growth. In kado, the simple meditation exercises prepare for the process of composition; a genuine understanding of harmony of mind and body and of the oneness of nature are essential to success. Fully half of the book is devoted to preparation--a thorough understanding of the concepts, and development of effective meditation techniques. A chapter expands on the fundamental principles of kado--harmony, asymmetrical balance, artlessness, impermanence, and oneness with the universe--and to the classification of arrangements. A final chapter guides the beginner in several simple arrangements, while appendices provide sources for supplies and a glossary. Lovely and elegant line drawings illustrate important points throughout.
An impressive, authoritative, and comprehensive introduction.......2001-01-31
In The Japanese Way Of The Flower, Davey and Kameoka successfully collaborate to instruct the reader in the Japanese art of flower arranging and how it differs from Western floral art. The reader will learn simple meditation exercises to prepare for the process of composition; basic flower arrangements with color photos, diagrams, and step-by-step instructions; important Japanese aesthetic and spiritual concepts; the history of "kado" (The Way of the Flower) and its different stylistic schools; and where to find formal kado instructors and flower arrangement supplies. A very welcome addition to students of Japanese culture, interior decorators, florists, and the non-specialist general reader with an interest in floral arrangements, The Japanese Way Of The Flower is an impressive, authoritative, and comprehensive introduction.

Customer Reviews:
best breastfeeding book I've read.......2006-03-13
I've read a few different books on breastfeeding, including the La Leche League's, but this is definitely the best. While I do agree with other reviewers that it can be repetitive, I actually read through almost the entire book in one sitting and remained interested, so I don't feel as if it reads like a textbook. It has very practical advice and instruction with good illustrations. I think it is important that it explains the biological process of milk formation and letdown so that women understand what is happening in their bodies. And it is very realistic--the author believes that almost everybody can breastfeed, but accepts that some may not be able to and some may not be able to exclusively breastfeed. She provides excellent recommendations for overcoming any challenges a woman may face in the process. I think I came away from this book very knowledgeable about many different aspects of breastfeeding, and it will certainly be helpful as I embark on the journey of nursing my own baby.
It is also good to note that the author is active in LLL and also helped write the 1998 American Academy of Pediatrics statement on breastfeeding. This is a very knowledgeable woman with experience from her own 5 children. Last, I appreciate that she respects the choice of a woman to work while breastfeeding and gives very practical tips on how to make that happen (something I feel is not the case for the LLL book).
Excellent book!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-05-22
My son was born 7 weeks early and this book was recommended to me by the lactationist and nurse that was in the NICU/ICN. This book covers everything. This was my first time to expereince breastfeeding and this book answered any question I had to, breastfeeding a preemie, to him being 8 months old and how to handle doing both breastfeeding and baby food. I even bought this for two friends of mine that were either thinking about breastfeeding or was going to and had a preemie. This book is an absolute must if you are gonna breastfeed.
Practical, well indexed, and realistic........2004-01-14
This book is great. When I was pregnant I received LLL's "Womanly Art of Breastfeeding" but found it to be fairly, well, preachy and unrealistic. There wasn't any practical advice on how to solve problems, or deal with issues of working moms, etc. This book gives you sound advice on issues such as common problems like plugged ducts, breastmilk storage, nursing past one year, how to deal with serious medical issues such as premature birth, etc. It's not meant to be read from start to finish, but the thorough index makes finding any specific information a breeze. Highly recommended for any would-be nurser.
BREASTFEEDING REALITY.......2003-05-18
I have read numerous books on nursing and this is the only one I found that gives the truth about breastfeeding. Like it isn't always free, be ready to lay down some cash for things that make nursing tons easier like nursing pillows, stools, pumps, bras, pads, lacation consultant, and easy to prepare foods for you.
Essential book for breastfeeding moms..........2003-04-28
Great information for anyone who is breastfeeding or even thinking about it. Wonderful, detailed advice on handling different problems and makes you realize that you can't expect it to go smoothly without any problems. High expectations of instant latch-on, etc., are very harmful to breastfeeding success and this book really prepares you what to expect. I'd recommend this book, as well as LLL's "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding" to any pregnant woman who is even possibly considering nursing because of the health benefits to herself and the baby.
