Book Description

In a recent study, half of all Americans rated their relationship with at least one parent as either 'poor' or 'terrible,' and more than a third felt this way about both parents. As life expectancy continues to rise and the parent-child relationship extends further into adulthood, this problem is becoming more prevalent than ever. Now, psychologist Dale Atkins presents a step-by-step plan for adults trying to come to terms with parents who are only human-before it is too late. In I'm OK, You're My Parents, Atkins applies the same intelligent, no-nonsense approach that's made her a frequent guest on top-rated TV shows. She urges a restructuring of the relationships between adults and their aging parents and gives practical, specific advice on how to exorcise the demons of anger and resentment, untangle financial arrangements that cause stress and feelings of powerlessness, set limits on your parents' demands for time and attention, turn a spouse or friends into a powerful resource, overcome your own resistance to change, and discover the redemptive power of humor. This book draws on Atkins's twenty-five years of experience as a relationship expert to present a comprehensive guide to repairing difficult relationships, gaining control, and building a life that you and your parents can live with for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Atkins Gets It.......2005-09-24

I recently finished Dr. Dale Atkin's 'Sanity Savers' and found it so helpful I had to see what else she had written. First of all I found that Dr. Atkins is a prolific writer, but after happening upon "I'm OK You're My Parents: How To Overcome Guilt, Let Go of Anger, and Create a Relationship That Works," I am convinced she is not only a talented professional but a wise woman who understands that true interpersonal intimacy is not only good for one's mental health but physical heath as well. I, once again as after reading "Sanity Savers," came away with a deep appreciation of the depth of her knowledge about how familial relations actually work including all the love, ambivalence, joy, sorrow, anger and remorse that are contained within them. I lent it to a friend who called me to say the book opened her eyes in the same way it did mine. Thank you Dr. Atkins from both of us.

5 out of 5 stars I'm One of Those Parents, and I want to be OK too!.......2004-07-07

I predict this book will become one of the classic self-help best sellers, and it should! Dr. Atkins writes from years of expertise in counseling young (and not-so-young) adults who are looking for ways to improve their relationships with their parents. Not "bad, awful, terrible" parents, but mothers and/or fathers who sometimes intrude, impose, ignore, invade, and/or may be insensitive to (or unaware of!) some of the needs, wishes, interests, and/or opinions of their adult children. The book is filled with a wide range of parent - adult child issues that will ring many familiar bells for probably most of us. Dr. Atkins' approach is articulate, optimistic, and practical, and is fun to read. I was sure she was writing about my own parents in several chapters, and I wish I had had access to these ideas years ago, instead of just rolling my eyes, silently mumbling and grumbling, planning visits carefully, censoring how much of my own life I shared with them. And they were actually pretty darn good parents - we just couldn't communicate about a lot of "stuff" from their generation to mine. After reading Dr. Atkins's book, I ordered a copy for my adult daughter! She's reading it now. Gulp!

5 out of 5 stars How adults can learn to relate better with their parent.......2004-04-27

In the wake of a multitude of books about how our parents have created all of our emotional problems comes this book that points out the fact that blaming someone is not a solution to problems. The focus of the book is to take that next step and find ways that you can move through guilt and anger and create a working relationship with your parents. To this end the book contains lots of examples from Dr. Atkins' actual patient files. It also includes exercises to work through, questionnaires to help you understand yourself and your relationship with your parents, and various lessons to illustrate the principles involved.

The first part of the book focuses on you. It includes an examination of ways to take control of your life so your past doesn't control your present, how to deal with guilt and parents who use it to control you, and anger.

The next part changes focus to your parents. How did they grow up? What did they go through as they were growing up? What was their life like? The focus is on developing empathy so you can use it to develop forgiveness. One of the most important points of the chapter is realizing that your fantasy parent doesn't exist. Not only do they not exist but also those fantasy perfect parents that your friends seemed to have were not perfect either. Two of the coping techniques covered in this chapter include creating reasonable expectations for yourself and your parents and creating appropriate boundaries.

The last section discusses the most common problems when dealing with parents. For example, some of the problems covered include the bait and switch technique, manipulating you with a health crisis, becoming easily offended when you don't share personal details of your life, putting you in the middle of their problems, or using money to manipulate you.

If you have a troubled relationship with your parents and are seeking to change, you should consider picking up a copy of "I'm OK, You're My Parents".

      Book Description

Today in America, one out of two marriages fail, which means there are many single parents out there who are struggling with raising their children alone! T. D. Jakes shares a poignant message that will bring comfort and encouragement as well as conviction. Being a child from a broken home, he learned first-hand what the enemy does to intimidate children and destroy parents. At the same time, Satan is whispering in a parent's ear about how incompetent and ineffective they are as a parental figure, he is also trying to deceive their children with his lies. There is a powerful anointing behind every word in this book for single parents and for those who feel single. The reflective questions at the end of the chapters in this newly-revised edition of Help! I'm Raising My Children Alone will help loose men and women from the perils and pitfalls of living in a broken home. Jakes encourages all parents to know: “There is a spiritual warrior and a leader in your child, and no mistake you've made in the past can stop God from blessing him or her.”

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Military Wives --- And Others.......2007-09-11

We've worked with single parents --- single moms and single dads --- for more than twenty years. This new book by T.D. Jakes is one of the best resources we've seen for single parents, or for those who are "functionally single" such as military wives whose husbands are on long or extended deployments.

Bishop Jakes is a wonderful author and speaker. His stories get right to the point and show you how to move forward with confidence and hope, even if you're the only parent your children have. You and God can do it!

Be encouraged today: you and God can raise great kids!

I have been separated from my spouse for 3 1/2 years. This book blesses me so much. I've cried while reading it, because it ministers strength and answers many questions beginning with Why. It also helps you to realize that just because the husband is gone, does not mean you have no husband. He is a father to the fatherless -PSALM 68:5. Isaiah 54:5 says For Thy Maker is thy husband. I am learning to depend upon him to help me raise my 4 children, because I cannot do it alone and this book has blessed me with Strength - highly recommended!!!!

When I started to read this book, I said to myself let me keep an open mind. Well, I was sure glad I did. Bishop Jakes cover every aspect of anyone who is standing alone in raising their child alone. He took a close look at our parenting skills and said "Let us ask God to enter into this task of raising our children. Thank You Bishop Jakes for shouting with spiritual love, I am not alone.

The parent battle cry of this book's title says it all: What Did I Just Say!?! offers solace and suggestions for hair-pulling parents who are not getting cooperation, respect, or acceptable behavior from their young children. Drawing upon years of clinical experience, psychiatrist Denis Donovan and child therapist Deborah McIntyre explore miscommunication as the reason why good kids continue to behave in ways opposite to what parents ask. As the authors explain, "Parents have a tendency to say things very different from what they really mean. And kids have logical antennas, tuning in to what adults say literally and logically." This problem leads to a two-step solution. First, parents must learn to say what they mean, and then they can understand how the inner world of their child's experience and thinking is different from that of adults.

Parents will chuckle and cringe with recognition as Donovan and McIntrye examine ineffective parent perennials such as "How many times do I have to tell you to behave?" They use these statements of frustration as lesson plans for teaching parents how they fail to convey what they really want--and how they can clearly state what they mean. More important, the authors invite parents to listen with a child's ear to gain insight about why the answer, "I give up, how many times do you have to tell me to behave?" is a logical rather than disrespectful answer.

The authors spotlight a variety of behavioral strategies including how to capture a child's attention and understand their "attentional style," avoid tuning out and serial forgetting, set boundaries and cope with sadness and anger. Several chapters detail a communication technique for focused one-to-one conversations called "The Five Minutes". Occasionally, Donovan and McIntrye offer general descriptions rather than hands-on suggestions. But overall, they convince readers that parents who learn to say what they mean and understand children on their own terms, will not have to issue multiple commands to put on pajamas tonight. --Barbara Mackoff

      Book Description

Does for parents and their young children what You Just Don't Understand does for men and women.

Did you know that when you say: "How many times have I told you not to?" your toddler thinks you are actually changing the subject rather than reiterating a question? Based on years of clinical experience and original child development research, What Did I Just Say!?! shows how conventional communication styles actually prevent parents from saying what they mean and cause children to hear something entirely different than what was intended. The authors demonstrate how a simple understanding of the logic of language and of childhood thinking can dramatically improve parent-child communication. Among the subjects covered are:

Understanding the complex experiential world of young children Putting structure, rules, and boundaries into children's lives while still fostering individuality Encouraging healthy emotional responsiveness and interpersonal sensitivity while decreasing anger and aggression Focusing a child's attention and foiling behaviors such as tuning out and forgetting

By helping parents understand the very different linguistic and experiential world of children, What Did I Just Say!?! offers a foundation for parent-child communication that will last a lifetime.

This book is amazing. If you have problems with your boys (OK kids) you must get this. I thought I was the most emotionally available and "tuned-in" parent. After reading the first few chapters, I used the skills I leared in this book. My older one had been whining in the mornings about not wanting to go to school. I gently commanded him to tell me WHY (I didn't ASK, I COMMANDED him to tell me- lovingly)in the ways I learned in the book. He told me that he was embarassed because he couldn't open his tupperware at snacktime. I had the same morning scene EVERY MORNING until that day, and that was the end of it! I use this book EVERY DAY now. It is an easy read, and you will get results after just a few chapters. I had no parenting issues that I wanted to fix, but my sister had an appt. with the author without knowing he had a book (a Dr. referral, he's in Tampa, FL). I looked it up on Amazon and it was interesting. I got it and it's LOVE! GET IT, but be ready to take responsibility for your kids' problems and take initiative to change the way you speak to them. If you can, it'll be easy, SO EASY. If you are looking for an external reason for your kids' problems you can easily find that elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Number 1 book on Parenting.......2002-08-01

Dr. Spock and all the others have nothing on this team. For the first time after reading and implementing parenting methods I have finally found one that truly works. The changes in our family are remarkable. In a world full of self help books on parenting, it is very confusing as to what is right, wrong or simply ineffective. This book however is not only effective but will teach parents common sense things we just could not see on our own. It is simple and even obvious now. Wonderful parenting guide for any parent whether working through a crisis or just wanting to make sure you and your child start out in the right direction. Its never to late to make a change and its not only effective, the results are quick and rewarding. Our quaility of family life has surpassed my wildest dreams!! Frued has been surpassed. We recommend this book to all of our friends, and to anyone reading this review. You will be amazed and grateful. Thanks Denis and Deborah!

This book has changed my life, it has given the spoken language new clarity from the eyes of the young. I now have control of how words are spoken, interperted and understood, before I always assumed my child understood what I meant. My children have responded very well to this easy to follow and understand guide. We have also been fortunate enough to be in therapy with Dr. Donovan for the past 1 1/2, as we live in St Petersburg, Fl. Read the book, absorb the book, implement the book and change your world and your childs.

                5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2004-03-20

I found this book a great read. Dr. Carr did an excellent job in writing a book that was very informative on the blockade runners and the blockaders. I enjoyed the separate stories through out the book on actual events. This really gave the reader a fill for what tactics the blockade runners used and the tacitics used by the US Navy. These little mini stories also were idea for showing the ever changing tactics used by both sides.

As a sailor who served on PBR's in Vietnam I related to the blockaders but admired the skill and daring of the blockade runners. Dr. Carr did an excellent job in showing how both sides tactics evolved during the war with the changes in technology and as more blockading vessels were used.

I highly recommend this book to all readers interested the civil war or naval history. I would like to see Dr. Carr write a book about the blockaders.

                5 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic!.......2003-10-06

The American Civil War has provided countless authors with material for nearly one hundred fifty years. Still, with the thousands of books and articles written about this war, some aspects of the struggle are often overlooked. I have in fact seldom run across a book, which has for its entire subject the blockade of a single southern port. I am sure other such works exist but I haven't seen them. But no matter what other books are out there I doubt they can hold a candle to this work. In fact, I have seldom ever been so enthralled with a book. Dawson Carr has provided us with a concise, thrilling, well-researched, and very understandable look at the wartime activities along the Cape Fear coast. The writing is absolutely wonderful and the story draws the reader in like a classic novel. You will not want to put this book down until you have finished it.

Carr begins his narrative with the early efforts of North Carolina to secure its coast and proceeds from there. The stories of the building of the coastal fortifications are well told and informative but it is his stories of the blockade-runners and their pursuers that will grab the reader's attention. One can almost feel the tension on the decks as the runners try to slip by the Union blockade, which grows in strength every month. As the pilots strain to make out landmarks in the total darkness the runners used for cover one can almost imagine being there and trying to make out some form on land, hoping the first thing you see isn't an enemy ship.

All of Carr's stories aren't of the blockade-runners though, for he also covers events in Wilmington, Richmond, Liverpool, and many other locations that are involved in this story. In one instance for example there is a tense confrontation between Governor Vance and Confederate authorities during which the Carolina Governor is basically placed under house arrest for a short time. Of course all good things must come to an end and for the Confederacy their last port fell shortly after Braxton Bragg was sent to take charge of the area. Infighting in Richmond, squabbles with state authorities, war profiteers, and three plus years of a union navel blockade couldn't close Wilmington, but it only took Bragg a short time to lose the Confederacy's last port.

If you are a civil war enthusiast, are interested in navel history, or just like a well-told story I highly recommend this book. If a six star rating existed this book would easily deserve that rating. Well done Dr. Carr, well done!
