During the early 1900s, Amsterdam developed an international reputation as an urban mecca when invigorating reforms gave rise to new residential neighborhoods encircling the city's dispirited nineteenth-century districts. This new housing, built primarily with government subsidy, not only was affordable but also met rigorous standards of urban planning and architectural design. Nancy Stieber explores the social and political developments that fostered this innovation in public housing.
Drawing on government records, professional journals, and polemical writings, Stieber examines how government supported large-scale housing projects, how architects like Berlage redefined their role as architects in service to society, and how the housing occupants were affected by public debates about working-class life, the cultural value of housing, and the role of art in society.
Stieber emphasizes the tensions involved in making architectural design a social practice while she demonstrates the success of this collective enterprise in bringing about effective social policy and aesthetic progress.

This book is a brilliantly researched work of great significance to the literature of 20th century housing in Europe. Part of four great housing movements of the 1920's including Vienna, Frankfurt and Berlin along with Amsterdam, together they tell an important story of housing by and for people. One of the best parts of this book is the guide at the end which shows all of the most important projects on a map with detailed information about each including the number of units, the architects and the housing society responsible for each. This will be come a classic in its field.

When your son makes you look like a bad parent ..........2006-05-17
If you are the mother of a son who doesn't quite present the "image" of a child from a "good Christian" home, this book is for you. It is not a how-to book. It won't tell you how to keep your boy out of trouble or how to fix him once he's strayed. Instead, there are about fifty short chapters telling the stories of various "lost boys" and how their moms have struggled to cope with the resulting worries, shame and guilt.
The book is scary because it shows ways of getting into trouble that my son (thankfully!) hasn't thought of -- drug and alcohol abuse, of course, but also theft, unwed pregnancies, piercings/tattoos, anger issues, ADD/ADHD, mental illness and one tragic incident involving a gun.
Some stories have happy endings; some end on a note of hope; some situations simply cannot ever be fixed in this lifeime. All of the stories point to an eternal hope with God and how to trust in Him when there is nothing else to cling to.
I'm going to suggest that our church stock this book in its bookstore. I think there are a lot of parents out there stuggling because their sons don't meet the expectations people have of the product of a Christian family. Five stars for a book that tackles this issue honestly.

the most entertaining book I have read this year .......2006-05-25
When Dan Shapiro was 21 he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer that automatically changed his life and left him with the typical battles of chemotherapy, surgery and all its side effects. Yet being the son of delightful, highly energetic and incredibly optimistic parents helped him battle the odds and exceed the life expectations the doctors set for him. The title of the book comes from his mother actually growing marijuana to help with the anorexia and nausea that his chemo sessions left him with. Though not a drug advocate, mom is an expert gardner and grows bushes of cannibus that would make any drug user happy for the rest of his life. His parents help is always to the extreme and its hilarious the measures they take to ensure that their son's cancer not take over his life.
The other wonderful part of this story is just the progression that he makes with each chapter- finding love, graduating medical school, buying a house, and of course beating the disease. Shapiro is warm, compassionate, yet downright hilarious. I couldn't help but read outloud some of the passages to my boyfriend such as when his parents decide he should donate his sperm, or when his mom tells his new girlfriend that they have pot drying in their attic. This book is just wonderful. You will have no problem enjoying it.

My 19 year old son is going through cancer treatment, and by chance a friend loaned me this book. It is a wonderful reference for anyone who has a young relative going through cancer treatment.

I picked this book up in the biography section of my library.
I was about to have my knee operated on and wondered if I could find a good book to read during the days in bed not moving. Well, I was moved by this book.
It is one of the best books I have ever read.
You almost feel like you know Dan through his setbacks and triumphs.
You'll laugh. You'll cry. You will fall in love with this wonderful book.
A life-changing experience........2001-09-10
You might think that the title of my review refers to this man's life changing experience, but in fact I'm speaking of the life changing experience that has been reading this book. Dan Shapiro truly is a brilliant man and he wrote a complex, insightful book. I think the title is misleading, but the story more than makes up for it. It's almost as if the book is interactive; it makes you think back about many things, and can be very humorous at times. When he said he knew his daughter wouldn't be alive today if it weren't for his mother's talking to a stranger, it took me a while to realize he was talking about the woman in that first waiting room telling his mother to save sperm. I like that, that way that Daniel Shapiro has about writing this book. It was one of my favorite books, if not my favorite book, that I have ever read, and I would absolutely love to see a sequel of some sort. (This is the kind of book that once you're finished reading you feel like you've known the author all your life and you wish to meet him.)

Why would someone tell the mom?.......2007-05-18
If this woman is so down on motherhood, why did she get pregnant? I read this book while I was pregnant and was appalled and the doom and gloom of it. My daughter is 7 months old now, and I'm happy to report motherhood is the wonderfully amazing experience that everyone (with the exception of Marge Stark) said it would be. Don't waste your money and don't waste a moment of motherhood on this piece of trash, it's way too precious.

Marg Stark is my hero. I loved her first book, "What No One Tells the Bride," and credit it with saving me from running screaming back to single life. I also buy a copy whenever it's time to attend a bridal shower. Now I'm a new mom and couldn't wait to carve out precious time to read this gem of a book.
There is no doubt that having children turns your life upside down. It can be especially challenging for those of us who waited until we were in our thirties to embark on the journey. No longer can we jet off on vacation the way we used to, make a "quick trip" to the store, or enjoy romantic weekends on a whim. There are trade-offs and changes in identity, relationships and purpose.
But the bottom line is that most women go through the same struggles. We will probably live the rest of our lives with parental guilt. But the trade-offs are all worth it and life has new meaning. That doesn't mean it's going to be easy. But it's okay to grieve your former life while you learn to embrace your new existence.
If there is one thing I have learned as a new parent, the key is to SURRENDER. I spent too much time worrying about what wasn't getting done and I suddenly realized that I was missing out on an amazing time in life. Once I gave in to the mounting stacks of laundry, the work that didn't get done on time, and stocked up on microwavable dinner options, life with baby began to get easier.
If you're a parent or becoming a parent, I urge you to read this wonderful book. It could save you months or even years of heartache. It's packed with wisdom and real-world anecdotes. This should be a best-seller!
Great book for Mom's who adopted too!.......2006-05-09
Marg Stark writes this book about the highs and lows of the life changing events of becoming a mom, with great humor and wisdom. This is one of the few "Mommy" books that I have read which really talks to all mothers, even to those who become parents through adoption. She takes the conversation beyond hormones, and to a level that all new moms can relate to in terms of the changes that occur with your marriage, your work like, your free time and the balancing act that comes with being a Mom. I loved this book, and so did all of my friends who have read it.
A perfect mom-to-mom gift .......2006-01-31
This book provided me with great relief that the surprising and somewhat frightening sense of ambivalence that accompanied my early motherhood joy was not (a) only my hormones, (b) indication of my complete failure at motherhood, and/or (c)something that would undermine my bonding and ruin my children for life. Moms I know will recognize bits of themselves somewhere in here, and would be grateful that someone gently and humorously gave them permission to laugh at their predicatment. It makes the joy of motherhood that much sweeter!

As a husband whose wife does not go to church with him, I read this book from the perspective of a man having a similar problem but with his wife - the same spiritual truths apply to men! If a man would implement what this book instructs, he too could learn to operate in faith and allow God to move on his situation. Armed with knowledge of the scriptures and an understanding of the actions I can take, I have every expectation that my wife will soon be going to church with me! This book provided me with the hope and tools that not only this situation but any situation I may face can be turned around by God

As a single woman, never married, I was not sure how this book would apply to me. I found this book to be an outstanding account of "Faith in Action." The biblical references and examples of standing in faith for God's promises apply to all of us. I was moved by the honesty of the author to share her experience and the willingness of her husband to allow this story to be told. I also learned a lot about the importance of respecting your husband, standing on the promises of God (regardless of how the situation looks) and faith that the Lord will accomplish his plan for our life if we don't give up. It is a story of hope, perseverence and victory! I highly recommend it.

When I started reading this book I could not put it down. I was astounded by its practicality to my every day life. The principles used in this book can be applied to any situation. The book is a loaded with scriptures and also real life experiences which gives you hope that you are not alone. Loved the book, and greatly recommend it.

Excellent Read!.......2007-04-12
This book lends instruction on how to get the promises of God to manifest in your life. The best kind of prayer is ANSWERED PRAYER. It is a read that will get you excited about what is truly available to you through the scriptures. I have never read a book that offers instruction on 'How to be baptized in the Holy Spirit'. These principles apply to anything that you are praying for, not just a husband who isn't going to church. It's worth its weight in scriptures!
