Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Book Description
An inspiring and profoundly enlightening exploration of one doctor’s discovery of how hope can change
the course of illness
Since the time of the ancient Greeks, human beings have believed that hope is essential to life. Now, in this groundbreaking book, Harvard Medical School professor and New Yorker staff writer Jerome Groopman shows us why.
The search for hope is most urgent at the patient’s bedside.
The Anatomy of Hope takes us there, bringing us into the lives of people at pivotal moments when they reach for and find hope--or when it eludes their grasp. Through these intimate portraits, we learn how to distinguish true hope from false, why some people feel they are undeserving of it, and whether we should ever abandon our search.
Can hope contribute to recovery by changing physical well-being? To answer this hotly debated question, Groopman embarked on an investigative journey to cutting-edge laboratories where researchers are unraveling an authentic biology of hope. There he finds a scientific basis for understanding the role of this vital emotion in the outcome of illness.
Here is a book that offers a new way of thinking about hope, with a message for all readers, not only patients and their families. "We are just beginning to appreciate hope’s reach," Groopman writes, "and have not defined its limits. I see hope as the very heart of healing."

The Role Hope Plays in Sustaining Quality of Life.......2004-03-13
I have read this author's books before, and I genuinely like his descriptions about the medical profession. This book particularly explains the tensions that physicians face in the conflict between being frank with patients and yet not taking hope away from them, even in serious circumstances. I believe it's easy for people, when they are well, to say that they would fight an illness with no holds barred, but when reality strikes, that dedication may falter or fail. This book does not gloss over the trials of cancer and other debilitating illnesses, but helped me understand in many ways why different patients react in radically differing ways when facing a crisis of their health. As so many baby boomers are aging themselves or facing the crises of aging parents, this book can be a godsend. But it's not just for those of us who are older. It's a wonderful read by a very interesting, compelling writer.

Best Book for Elementary Aged Children.......2006-01-27
In the process of completing my degree in biochemistry, I took various biology, anatomy, and physiology classes and purchased the requisite textbooks for hundreds of dollars. I now teach upper elementary students in a Montessori school. I can use the college textbooks for occasional reference or specific research with the students, but when I need to present an impressionistic lesson or just tell about the human body, this book is the one I go to. It presents the body like a story with simple, clear, beautiful illustrations inspired by the likes of Leonardo Da Vinci. If you are a Montessorian (or any teacher for that matter) looking for a simple, concise reference to supplement lessons on the human body, I would look no further. My co-teacher has used this book for years and has thankfully shared it with me. Get it if you ever find it!
Great Facts Presented Well.......2000-03-10
I used this book as a starting point to teach my 10-year-old son the facts of life. All of the chapters are well done, and the section on the reproductive system has wonderful descriptions and art, without any of the corniness you find in some books. Great if you like the scientific approach!

Illustrated Guide to House and Architectural Terms.......2007-09-27
Think of this as a sort of Idiot's Guide to Homebuilding. If you're not already fluent in building terminology, you should get this book before you remodel, flip, or plan a new house. It's thin and will easily fit in your back pocket, so you can take it with you when you go to talk to your architect, builder, designer, or contractor. You'll you will have a much better idea what they're trying to explain to you, or can flip through until you find a picture of what you're asking for.
The book covers all major home structural elements, from roofs to toilets. It's massively illustrated, with just enough words thrown in to explain the main concepts. The focus is on materials you will see, such as doors, windows, and countertops. If you want a lot more depth, try "Graphic Guide to Interior Details for Builders and Designers," by Rob Thallon. If you need to know how to frame a wall, or know the difference between king, jack, and cripple studs, try "Adding On: How to Design & Build a Beautiful Addition to Your Home," by Rodale.
I strongly recommend this book for every homeowner.

Book Description
Reveals facts and legends about bears, eagles, salmon, wolves, ravens, seals, bats, beavers, owls, and whales. Ages 10+.
Book Description
Water has been described as the 21st century oil. Water shortages, water quality and water rights are hot-button issues at the local, national and international levels. Climate change, population growth and contamination from industry, farms and human settlements have dramatically impacted water supplies and disrupted natural nutrient cycles. Strategic wastewater management will be a critical tool in protecting this valuable but threatened resource.
Reusing the Resource is a comprehensive guide to using plants to stabilize, clean, filter and reuse wastewater, while simultaneously eliminating expensive and polluting sewers and septic systems. The book profiles more than 30 successful ecological wastewater recycling systems that save money, protect public and environmental health, and provide plant-based fuel, fiber, construction materials, habitat and landscapes. It details the pros and cons of various systems, and provides tips for designers, regulators and builders. Case studies include:
- a greenhouse-enclosed wastewater aquaculture system
- a regional wastewater-recycling plant
- a city's wastewater-treatment wetland
- graywater planters.
This book is a must-read for engineers, landscape designers, clean water advocates and property owners. Packed with practical ideas and featuring beautiful full-color photos and inspiring, easy-to-read information, Reusing the Resource proves that the solution to water pollution is to grow it away!

Book Description
Blier illuminates the extraordinary architecture of the Batammaliba people of Western Africa, revealing these buildings as texts through which we can read the beliefs, psychology, traditions, and social concerns of their inhabitants. In doing so, she explores the role of vernacular architecture as an expression of culture.
"A splendid analysis of the centrality of architecture in the daily lives of the Batammaliba and its integral role in articulating social values....The story is beautifully told in the best of anthropological traditions."—Judith R. Blau, Contemporary Society
"A remarkable study....Blier's volume carries the study of African architecture to a qualitatively new level of scholarship. It introduces a new dimension whereby the architectural medium can be used to illuminate much of the entire belief system of any culture."—Labelle Prussin, African Arts
"In this excellent book Blier provides a richly detailed and searching account of what architecture means to the Batammaliba of northern Togo and Benin....The finest account I have yet read of the relations between systems of beliefs, ritual practices, and African aesthetics and plastic arts....The ethnography and basic insight should be the envy of any social anthropologist."—T.O. Beidelman, Man
Customer Reviews:
For anyone with a serious interest in architecture.......2002-01-12
This by far the best research I have read on the subject of architecture. Suzanne Blier takes a holistic and scholarly approach. The writing is clear with excellent references that have proven very helpful. The photography and illustrations are informative. Anyone with a serious interest in West African art, sociology, language, religion and architecture in general should read this book.
Book Description
Tweens (8- to 14-year-olds) comprise a new type of audience. An increasingly powerful and smart consumer group, they spent US$300 billion but influenced an astounding US$1.88 trillion spent across the globe last year. They are different from previous generations in every way. They are more likely to have a friend on the other side of the world than in their own street, they think the TV remote is broken when they can't find the cursor on the screen, they drop from existence when the battery in their cell phone is flat, and they know current brand images better than any advertising expert.
Based on the world's most extensive study of tween attitudes and behaviors ever conducted, 'BRANDChild' is the first book to look in-depth at the phenomena behind global kids and their relationships with brands. Conducted by Millward Brown, the leading global market research agency, the BRANDchild survey involved several thousand kids from more than 70 cities in 15 countries (throughout Europe, Asia, the United States and South America). Several renowned experts including best-selling author Patricia B. Seybold ('Customers.com') share their unique views on kids' trends and fascinating marketing techniques.
'BRANDChild' summarizes this research, as well as decades of experience from a variety of other sources on how to market to kids. It looks at their life priorities, hopes and dreams and reveals the true drivers of kids' trends by analyzing teen-minority groups, communities and clubs.
Packed with practical advice on how to create kids' brands, including more than 50 previously unpublished case studies, 'BRANDchild' proposes new innovative ways of marketing to this young audience. It is required reading for anyone wanting a fresh insight into this increasingly influential and demanding consumer group.
Customer Reviews:
Inspiring!.......2004-08-28
This book is inspired. And it's not just for 'ad-folk', but anyone who appreciates how much influence kids has on the future of branding. The message in BRANDchild is super-powerful. Just see how beautifully the examples in this book elucidate the idea, taking it beyond ideology to reality backed by tons of data and research. If you want a how-to manual on the future of kid's communication, you've found it. If you're anywhere near business, you'd better wake up and listen to Lindstrom's advice in BRANDchild.
Fascinating Study -- A Must Read.......2004-08-26
Martin Lindstrom is the new, young, energetic marketing guru that the world has been waiting for. Fabulous information. Infectious energy. Saw him recently on Bloomberg Television -- he looks like a kid himself but has thoughtfulness and brillliance way beyond his years. Can't wait to see what he comes up with next.
Packed with Knowledge!.......2004-05-19
This is an excellent book about marketing to children. Based on extensive research into the attitudes, perceptions, emotions and preferences of children around the world, it tells you in no uncertain terms how to target one of the biggest and most influential consumer populations on earth. Children between the ages of 8 and 14, dubbed "tweens" ("tweenagers") by the authors, are a curious group. They are also a lonely, insecure group with an engaging mix of naiveté and sophistication. Devilishly hard to capture, they are a rich economic prize, controlling an enormous amount of money of their own, and strongly influencing their families' purchases, even of major appliances. This book shows you what matters to these kids and what false notes to avoid if you want to tap into their buying power. We acknowledge that some readers may be uncomfortable with such tactics as setting up a web site that pretends to belong to a friendly child in order to attract kids and start buzz about some brand, but the book's reporting is accurate, practical and forward looking, for good or ill.
Great Book!.......2003-06-19
Martin Lindstrom does a great job letting the reader know that the root of success when communicating with kids is understanding kids, their lives, dreams and hopes. He not only analyzes data from 7 countries, but includes his own experiences with working with kids and with kids related brands. He is able to get his point across without being boring, looking at the subject form different angles.
I also checked out the MartinLindstrom.com site. I think it is a great site, with tons of brand info related to kids and general brand trends. Well done!
The Secret Seapon.......2003-04-26
This book is the secret weapon for anyone who markets to kids or wants to. Lindstrom manages to make the subject entertaining and engaging while teaching you a pile of indispensible techniques to capture a kid's heart.
Not only does the book teach you how to market products better, it gets you thinking different. Suddenly, you're developing products and strategies with kids in mind, and you understand why certain products are big hits with kids.
Another funny thing about this book...it helps you to understand kids better. For readers with their own kids, this could be the greates value of all.
