Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource, but questions remain.......2007-07-12
I thought the angels had answered my prayers when I saw this book at my local pharmacy. It is packed absolutely chock full with great, easy to understand information about digestion, the mind-gut connection, and various digestive diseases. I know "natural medicine" seems crunchy granola and therefore easy to dismiss, but logic (and many well-designed studies) make many of the recommendations in this book hard to refute, and definitely worth trying. As someone who has been to dozens of traditional doctors and has still not found relief for my gut, being given more information and options for treating these distressing problems is a godsend and not to be sneezed at. However, after reading it cover-to-cover, I still have questions.
My main issue: I have symptoms of several of the problems talked about in the book, and unfortunately the treatments for these problems are often contradictory. I really should eat more yogurt and other cultured products for the beneficial flora--unless I have candidiasis or a food allergy. I should eat whole grains for the fiber--unless I'm allergic or have candidiasis. I should drink water right before I go to bed--unless I have reflux. The list goes on and on. I have NO IDEA which of my stomach problems I should tackle first and which things I can try for one problem that won't significantly worsen another problem. I find I'm so confused that I really want to visit the clinic that Ms. Berkson talks about working at, but she gives no contact info in the book and I was unable to find anything online. Barring that, I would have really appreciated some information for how to FIND a clinic like that one, or a doctor who will work with me to find holistic and natural remedies.
Having said that, I still think this book is an excellent resource that is well-written, well-organized, and well worth reading.
Excellent health information.......2007-06-27
One of the most helpful, informative books I have read. The suggestions really work. Highly recommend as an aid in healing.
Another great book with instant, digital availability!.......2007-06-26
I appreciated all the other reviews on this book before buying; and I find, too, that it FULLY deserves the five stars from the other readers! I also like that it's instantly available in digital format while we wait for the hard copy to arrive--what a great deal from Amazon and publisher, and with digestive problems, the sooner we get them remedied, the sooner our family member feels better and can get on with life!
Excellent book if you have IBS or GERD or other Digestive Problems ..........2006-12-27
This book is very thorough. It covers in depth the right foods, the wrong foods, what certain foods, supplements, and drugs do to digestive tract. It covers some history of digestive diseases, food alergies, home treatment, etc. The author makes no promises that this information will solve your particular digestive problem, however, she present the information honestly.
I recommend this book highly!
Covers all symptoms.......2006-12-10
The author seems very knowledgeble on all aspects of digestive problems. Learned a lot. Throws so much at you that it is hard to assimilate it all. Worth reading.

This book has good information and decent menu ideas. Not too much that I didn't already know.
Recommended to GERD sufferers.
Eating for Acid Reflux.......2006-06-26
Good information on acid reflux. Many of the recipes had ingredients that people with acid reflux can't use....like tomato paste with (as tolerated) in the recipe. I found only six recipes for my family.
Excellent!.......2005-10-09
I love this book, it gives you everything you need to know about GERD, and the food in the cookbook is delicious!! I reccomend this book to all GERD suffers out there!!
Disappointing recipe section.......2004-04-20
Excellent background information on the disease. One of the most complete descriptions and reasons why certain foods cause problems. However, I was very disappointed with the recipe section. I was expecting recipes for dishes that did not include foods that can cause heartburn. Instead, there were very common recipes, many containing several ingredients that GERD suffers should avoid, with instructions such as "if you have problems with onions, leave it out..." How helpful is that, really!?

Good Overview and Handy Recipes.......2007-01-18
This book gives a good overview of the problem, with a lot of basic information with a good level of detail, but in not too technical terms.
The diet recommendations are great, and helped me put together the best diet plan for me. I especially appreciated the explanations of why different foods are bad for you, because there are about 4 different ways foods can contribute to the GERD problem. One or two of the meal plan suggestions might be questionable, such as eating strawberries when you have severe pain, but otherwise, it does a great job. The recipes are helpful, too.
A Disapointment.......2007-01-04
I had high hopes for this book but they were not fulfilled. The information section would only be helpful to people who are totally new to the wonderless world of acid reflux it is also somewhat depressing.
The recipes are ok but they aren't that wonderful
This book is definently not the place to start if you need help with this problem
Good Luck to us all
A GERD Sufferer.......2006-11-05
Good book with good information and menu ideas. Not too much that I didn't already know.

"Chronic Heartburn" Is a Sweet Dish.......2006-06-05
In an area filled to the lid with cookbooks of every taste and portion, "Chronic Heartburn: Managing Acid Reflux and GERD Through Understanding, Diet and Lifestyle" is a welcome and well-prepared arrival for gastronomical considerations little served at present. For anyone who suffers heartburn, and thereby tends to view the kitchen with some trepidation, "Chronic Heartburn" is a gateway to culinary freedom and delicious experience. As enjoyable to read as it is written and researched, the book offers everything: causal information of acid reflux (including informative diagrams), treatment options (including herbal ones), lifestyle modifications, guides to foods that hurt and heal, charts for effectively managing heartburn, and over one-hundred recipes, from soups to smoothies to main-course meats and seafood. Among my favorites: grilled halibut with papaya salsa, Russian-style borscht and mango chicken. As one who, like many, does suffer bouts of heartburn, I've come across few books that so effectively take the worry out of dining.
Great recipes!.......2006-05-16
This book is not only informative with easy-to-comprehend details about the digestive system, but also a wonderful cookbook! It has healthy recipes that are good for people who suffer from heartburn, acid reflux, and other digestive ailments. Yet, these recipes are great for dieters, veggie lovers, and those who just want to eat healthy foods. The Smoothies and Juices are fantastic drinks with summer approaching! This is a must-have book for healthy eating.
Book Description
Nearly everyone has experienced heartburn, the sensation of burning discomfort in the chest, often brought on by eating a large meal. In fact, heartburn is the most common gastroesophageal disorder in the United States -- more than seven in ten adult Americans suffer from heartburn each month. Few people, however, realize that heartburn is really just one symptom of the disorder known as acid reflux disease or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a condition in which stomach acid repeatedly washes up into the esophagus, or remains in the esophagus too long.
Most people experience GERD as a cluster of simple symptoms -- belching, chest pain, and indigestion. Others suffer painful or difficult swallowing, asthma, chronic cough, and hoarseness, symptoms that can indicate a more serious disorder or lead to such complications as bleeding, esophageal stricture, and esophageal cancer. Some people, however, experience no symptoms--and they run an especially high risk of developing complications.
Healing Heartburn seeks to educate people about GERD's symptoms and the range of available treatments and also to help people take charge of their lives by doing something about their own acid reflux disease. Authors Dr. Lawrence J. Cheskin and Dr. Brian E. Lacy cover diagnostic tests, a step-by-step approach to treatment, the effectiveness of medications, complications and how to avoid them, and special considerations for pregnant women and for children. Illustrations, questionnaires, patient vignettes, answers to commonly asked questions, and a list of additional resources round out this comprehensive patient guide.

Book Description
This is a brutal story Ð but, from the safety of fifty years distance in time Ð it is an extremely compelling one. It is also an enduring lesson that a military unit, formed under an evil ideology, led by a social outcast and composed of vicious criminals, will sink to its lowest common denominator Ð hate. The Dirlewanger Battalion, also known as "Sonderkommando (special commando) Dirlewanger" was perhaps the least understood, but at the same time the most notorious German SS anti-partisan unit in World War II. German propaganda correspondents and wartime photographers did not follow them in action. And for good reason. Wherever the Dirlewanger unit Ð named for and led by Oskar Dirlewanger Ð operated, corruption and rape formed an every-day part of life and indiscriminate slaughter, beatings and looting were rife. Formed as a battalion of convicted poachers in 1940, the unit operated in Poland until 1942, guarding Jews in forced labor camps and making life miserable for Poles in Lublin and Cracow. From there Dirlewanger spent two years combating partisans in central Russia, giving no quarter and expecting none in return, during vicious fighting against an elusive foe in the midst of inhospitable swamps and dismal forests. In 1944 Dirlewanger savaged Warsaw during the Polish Uprising, before moving to Slovakia to crush another rebellion there. The end of the war saw the unit, which was now a division in size, fighting for its life south of Berlin against the Soviet Army. Medieval in their outlook on war and certainly not indicative of many German military formations, this unit none-the-less remains a reflection of a segment of mankind gone mad in the inferno of World War II on the eastern front. Customer Reviews:
Dull and disapointing.......2007-03-19
As said in previous review, this book is disapointing when you see how boring it is. Pages and pages related to irrelevant judicial sentences, promotions, etc. It's description of the combat and war crimes are bureaucratic, as describing a mechanical administration. From an academic point of view it is usefull, but only if you are interested in the grey facts or are working on this subject.
Factual and dispassionate record.......2006-08-31
MacLean's book on Dirlewanger has some serious weaknesses, but it is for the moment the most complete account we have of Sonderkommando Dirlewanger. For reasons that become increasingly obvious as one reads the book, few good records were kept, this organization was mentioned only very rarely in military dispatches and was never covered in contemporary newspaper or magazine accounts, and of course at the very end whatever documentary evidence might have existed was lost or destroyed. What is left has to be pieced together from general Wehrmacht and SS records.
MacLean goes through what records there are and does more editing than writing. Every character is defined by his Party and SS number, decorations, etc, presumably just pulled directly from archive records. Every letter he could find touching on every promotion or comment regarding Dirlewanger's legal situation is quoted or reproduced in full; in some cases this becomes quite repetitious. It is obvious that there is just not enough available at this time to fill out a full sized book, and the author seems to be struggling to fill up space. There are a couple of maps which must be regarded as completely useless; the photos are a bit better.
On the other hand, one does learn something of the nature of the partisan fight in Russia over the years. The unit was moved around within a relatively small area fighting Russian partisan bands, occasionally taking time out to find Jews to murder, until they found that the front had come to them; it turned out that fighting the very heavily armed Russian army was a little different from hunting down lightly armed peasants. Dirlewanger's story in Warsaw is better known, and the chapter on his murder by French soldiers just after the end of the war is informative.
The very spotty nature of the records and MacLean's writing style detract from the book, but the information that is there is worth having, and is largely unavailable elsewhere.
The Cruel Hunters - Sondercommando Direlwanger.......2006-03-23
In a word...disappointing. MacLean manages to confuse reams of irrelevant information regarding promotions and personal information of anonymous SS men as salient to the story. The translations from German to English are poorly done (they read in many cases as literal translations) and the few worthy anecdotes that a reader truly interested in Oskar Dirlewanger and his role in history will find could easily have been condensed into thirty pages. Pictures are somewhat interesting but nothing unique. Listings of SS personnel having served with Dirlewanger is of some value. Printed in China and looks it. At the price, I'd recommend that you take a pass.
Interesting Subject, but books leaves a lot to be desired........2006-01-03
This book had great promise, but ended up being a packaging of a bunch of German records from the National Archives. In addition to being poorly edited, it is written in a very dry manner - for example, whenever anyone is mentioned throughout the book, there is a standard list of things that is covered for each person, such as the date of birth, their Nazi Party number, their SS number, etc. The maps included are very rudimentary and do not show any unit movements - looking things up on Mapquest would provide the reader with better geographic fidelity. Not recommended.
A collection of foot-notes.........2005-08-27
This was a huge disappointment for me. Like many I'd waited for this to be published and then found that all I had was the footnotes and end-notes for a book that's yet to be written.
There was so much to be tackled - Dirlewanger's life, his unit's formation, his friends in high SS-places, his own 'sex-crimes', the numerous witnesses on German, Polish, Russian, Partisan sides, the excesses, the 'fight-or-die' fanatical courage of his gang under fire, the brutality and debauchery, the 'recruitment' of all sorts including concentration camp prisoners.
There is so much to work with but I guess we'll have to wait for someone else to track down the witnesses, interview the veterans, translate the archives... etc, etc.
